15 Cars For Hardtop Race At Stockton

The NorCal Vintage Hardtops were part of the World of Outlaw race at Stockton 99 Dirt Speedway two weeks ago.  Kyle Larson won that Outlaw race, but there wasn't as much hype about the Hardtops.  The Vallejo Hardtops Page did have an update on who won the race, thanks to John Philbert.

There were 15 cars in action for this race, which gave the growing Hardtop revival a two heat race program.  I managed to grab a few photos from video out there.  Former Merced Sportsman champion (and I want to say a former Cal Mod champ as well) Mike Friesen is no stranger to winning Hardtop races on the pavement track in Stockton.  However, he did it on the dirt this time with a Main Event win ahead of veteran Terry DeCarlo, a feature winner in the final Hardtop season at Vallejo Speedway in 1978.  Dan Green came home third.

John Philbert grabbed himself a win in the second heat race ahead of Mike McClure and John Fuller.  I'm not sure how many Hardtop wins John has had over the past few seasons, so it was nice to see him grab a checkered flag in this race.

Dan Green and Tommy Thomson battled for position all night long.  Thomson, who won the final hardtop race at Vallejo in the very car he's driving now, has won several races in his familiar green and black #39 car.  He had to settle for fourth behind Green in the main and also chased the impressive winner Green for a second in his heat race as Jeff Ball was third.  Thomson turned the tables on Green by winning the Trophy Dash as John Fuller was third.

According to the schedule, the Hardtops will be at Petaluma on April 13.
