Antioch Speedway Stays The Course So Far In 2016

Antioch, CA...The 2016 season is a bit of a transitional year for Oval Motorsports at Antioch Speedway. As John and Donna Soares entered their 19th season as promoters of the Contra Costa County Fairgrounds based racing facilities, there were still some questions. They also decided to move on from promoting Merced Speedway and Chowchilla Speedway.

There were other factors that led to a slow start for John and Donna this year, and the 2015 awards banquet nearly didn't happen. Had it not been for the efforts of Ron and Lori Brown, there would have been no banquet. Shortly after the banquet, the new All Star Series schedule was released, leading to more questions about the season. Could they pull it off? The results so far would indicate that nobody should have doubted them in the first place.

One of the big questions centered around the IMCA sanctioning being dropped from the A Modifieds and B Modifieds. There were further doubts going into the season when the B Modified division was given a 25 race schedule. However, the show has gone on.

The B Modified division suffered more from too many booked race dates than from the lack of sanctioning. When drivers got a look at the big schedule, many of them said that they wouldn't run for points. In this day and age, it's hard to get any racer to commit to a 25 race schedule in any division, even the most economically minded divisions.

So far, it looks like two drivers have stepped forward to try and run for points in the B Modified division. That would be Al Johnson and Shane DeVolder. Johnson is the current point leader and has finished second in three Main Events so far this year. Though he has yet to win, indications are that that moment may be just around the corner for him. The rookie DeVolder has also had his moments as he has finished as high as second and won a heat race.  He hasn't missed a race, but he is currently third in the standings..

With two feature wins so far this year, Trevor Clymens would seem to be a guy who could win the championship, but he has missed one race to put him behind Johnson. Should Trevor continue to race the rest of the season, it seems likely that he has a good chance of overtaking Johnson. Reigning champion Fred Ryland has opted not to pursue points at Antioch Speedway. He and his wife Patti have both raced at other places. When Fred has come out to Antioch, he is a multi time feature winner. Another multi feature winner is Watsonville competitor Anthony Giuliani.

What has aided this B Modified division so far this year is the fact that there have been new cars debuting. Given the busy nature of the schedule this year, however, it seems likely that car count will dip under ten on occasion and have good moments as well. The championship would seem to be Johnson's to lose unless Clymens decides to take up the chase.

The lack of IMCA sanctioning in the A Modified division has not really affected the class, but what has had a big impact on the track's point race is the new John Prentice Motorsports promoted All Star Modified Series. For whatever reason, Soares and Prentice didn't sit down at the table and negotiate any dates for this group or any of Prentice's Sprint Car classes. Antioch would seem to be a natural fit, but at this moment there are no talks.

When the first race was to be held at Tulare a few weeks ago, Antioch's point race took a major hit. Drivers opting to skip Antioch to run the series included incoming point leader Aaron Crowell, four time champion Troy Foulger, two time Petaluma Champion Nick DeCarlo, past champion Kellen Chadwick, three time champion Bobby Hogge IV and Josh Combs. Like Hogge, Combs is also a feature winner at Antioch this year, but Hogge has done it in Late Models and Modifieds.

When all of those drivers ducked out on the point race, it opened the door for 5 time champion Scott Busby to move into the point lead. Taking up the chase on Busby was 2014 champion Carl Berendsen II, still hungry for his first career win in this division. Busby gave it a valiant effort to win the race two visits ago, but he came up just short to the flying Jeff Decker, the 2015 Late Model champion. When Busby scratched after his heat race last time out, that opened the door for Berendsen to take the point lead going into the break. The winner that night was another Petaluma champion, Oresete Gonella.

Because there are still so many Modifieds out there these days, the class has still maintained a double digit car average for the races this year. The Prentice promoted All Star Series doesn't run every week, so you'll see some of the big names come back to Antioch on occasion. The only remaining question at this point would be will Busby continue to try to pursue the championship after having his bad night?

The Winged Sprint Car division was given a bigger schedule this year of almost twice as many dates from last year. This had many people speculating as to whether or not Soares could pull it off. He struggled to get cars for the division last year with a shorter schedule, and he still goes up against a more established show at Petaluma Speedway. However, John remains firmly committed to having a Winged Sprint Car class.

If the car count from the past two races is any indication, there was no reason to worry. Double digit car counts have filled the pits, and the records will show that feature winners so far this year are current point leader Art McCarthy, second ranked Billy Aton and Koen Shaw. What seems to be happening is drivers are coming to Antioch to get some good laps on a track that is very well suited for Sprint Car racing. 2015 champion Shawn Arriaga has spotted his rival Art McCarthy one race, but he is quickly climbing up the point ladder.

A few more drivers seem to be ready to commit to Antioch Speedway, including Adam McCarthy in father Art's second car, Dan Gonderman, Chris Magoon, the father-son duo of Rick and Ricky Brophy, newcomer Tim Burcher and Sprint Car veteran Burt Foland Jr. If this trend continues, Antioch could end up with a Sprint Car class in the teens before the year is up.

When the Wingless Spec Sprint division filled the pits with 17 Cars two races ago, it seemed obvious. The timing of the Antioch Speedway rule changes last year may not have been very good, but the rules seem to be taking hold this year. The Wingless Spec Sprint division has been strong at Antioch this year, and indications are it will continue to be that way.

It is no surprise at all to find past champion and division all time feature win leader Jim Perry Jr. at the top of the point list. Perry won the most recent Main Event and joins Marcus Smith and two time champion Dan Gonderman as feature winners so far this year. The division continues to be very competitive, and several drivers are in the hunt so far this year.

Among the drivers committing to running for points are division mainstay Rick Panfili, Alan Miranda, 2015 champion Kyle Bakkie and veteran Roy Fisher. There are several new faces in the field this year, including Shannon Newton, past Chowchilla champion Brandon Burd and rookie Adam Teves. The Spec Sprint division is in its 18th year now, and it seems to be doing better this year.

When car count dipped under 10 cars for two races in a row, there had to be concern over the Late Model division. If you know anything about Soares, you know he is a Late Model guy, and that car count wouldn't fly with him. The season opener featured a spirited duel between Bobby Hogge IV and 2014 champion Richard Papenhausen, won by Hogge with a Lap 18 pass. Papenhausen rebounded a race later with a win.

Soares could not have been pleased to see that one of the division's big boosters, Paul Gulielmoni, was supporting the class at Placerville instead of Antioch one night. It is likely that several phone calls were placed leading up to the third race, and the result was a field that included the surprising  Clay Daly, who never seems to show up at Antioch, Hogge and Andy Obertello in the track House Car. Gulielmoni was seen with a couple of his race cars as well.

The result was one of the best Late Model shows the track has had in the last three years, won by Daly over Troy Foulger and Hogge. Foulger and Hogge finished second and third that night in the A Modified Main Event as well. What that show was another indication of is the track's commitment to maintaining a Late Model division. You can count on Soares to do what he can to keep a Late Model division going at Antioch Speedway.

Limited Late Model car count came out of the gate with a whimper this year. Results will show that division veterans Mike Gustafson and Larry Damitz were the first two feature winners. Between these two drivers, there are six championships won in this class, and they are also first and second on the division's all time win list with over 80 Main Event wins between them. Damitz just turned 87 and shows no signs of slowing down.

The big concern is car count, which was very low for the first two races. However, rookie Kimo Oreta came out of the gate pretty strong and is second in the points ahead of Mark Garner. Lori Brown has also had some good results. We've been talking about the potential of Jim Freethy to get a Main Event win, and it finally happened in the third race.

However, something even better happened in the third race, a car count of over 10 cars. We also finally saw the debut of Calvin Lewis, in a car from from the shop of RPM Racing. Joey Ridgeway made his debut in the class, and teammate Chris Long seems to be about ready to make his return to the division as well. If this continues, an increased Limited Late Model car count will make things more interesting. That is certainly the hope, but we'll have to see.

In the wild and crazy Dwarf Car division, racing has been very exciting. 2015 champion David Teves seems to have put his focus on winning the South Bay Dwarf Car title out at Watsonville. This has opened the door for division veteran Mike Corsaro and Kevin Miraglio to battle for the championship. Corsaro won the opener and came from tenth starting to finish a very close second to Teves in the next race. Miraglio has been a consistent top three finisher and is the current point leader just ahead of Corsaro.

Speaking of South Bay, veteran Mark Biscardi came to Antioch and won back to back Main Events before missing the most recent race, won by Thomas Leiby. The recent race was a bit of a brutal affair, which resulted in Wade Humphrey leaving the track with a leg injury after a flip. Car count has taken a hit this year as some drivers have went to run with the Nor Cal group, but it still keeps having double digit count.

The one thing that the shake up in car count has done is allowed other drivers to shine as new stars, and Tim Reeder is among those who have stepped up this year. It seems likely that you will see new feature winners as the season goes on, and Dwarf Car racing continues to be entertaining at Antioch Speedway. Drivers who could step up and surprise you this year include Buddy Kniss, Brian Gray, Robert Coe and Josh Miller.

The statewide trend at the moment, is a very competitive Hobby Stock division. With five races in the books, we have 5 different Main Event winners. On the list so far are Danny Jones, rookie and current point leader Guy Ahlwardt, two time champion Melissa Myers, reigning champion Kimo Oreta and Chris Long.

The story of Hobby Stock racing is a similar story to that of the Wingless Spec Sprint division. Rules were changed just ahead of the 2015 season, and car count took a hit. Considering there were 17 cars in competition at the most recent race, it looks like the Hobby Stock division is rebounding big time. As competitive as this division is, the Main Event winner's list should reach into double digits by the time the season is over.

There are still some very talented racers who have not won a Main Event, and high on that list is Natalie Perry. Natalie is in the midst of her best season yet, ranking in the top three, and it would be unwise to count her out. Drivers such as Jason Jennings, Jordan Swank, Michael Cooper, Cameron Swank and Steven Rogers are among those you should watch this year. Also keep an eye on rookies Lindsay Buirch and Jessica Jones as they continue to improve with each race.

Not quite a regular at the speedway, but still booked five times is the California Hardtop division. The division seems to be in the midst of some big changes, but they have had two races at the speedway so far. Larry Damitz is pretty much classified as a Modified Hardtop, and he crossed the finish line first at the first race. Official feature winners this year are Jason Clifford and Dave Mackey. Mackey was very impressive in making a couple of passes to get his first career feature win last time out.

Mackey and Jason's father Ken Clifford are big boosters for the division in absence of the club's leader. Clifford actually sponsored top three trophies for the recent race and will sponsor top three trophies for the next race at Antioch. Mackey has taken the bull by the horns and arranged for the September 10th event to become the Chet Thomson Memorial race.

A press release is in the works, but the Chet Thomson race was held at Vallejo Speedway from 1967 to the time the track closed. For those who don't know, Chet was a champion at Vallejo Speedway in Hardtops in the 1960s driving for Bob Thomas. You may also know that Chet's son, Tommy Thomson, drives the #39 Hardtop, a car that he actually drove at Vallejo Speedway and won a Chet Thomson Memorial race with.

The California Hardtop movement is almost 10 years old, and Soares was the first promoter to give this group a home track. Drivers like Robby Waldrop, Dennis Armstrong, Rick Ruiz, Dan Williams, John Turner and Damitz make this a very interesting division.

Antioch Speedway is still going strong this year. Though there were some doubts and some questions heading into the year, it seems to be steady as she goes. John's Father, John P. Soares, promoted the track for 20 years, and every indication is that John will attempt to surpass him. As the season goes on, you can expect some more good things to happen at Antioch Speedway as it remains one of the places to be for race fans on Saturday night.

This Saturday night will feature Winged Sprint Cars and Wingless Spec Sprints, along with the A Modifieds,  B Modifieds, Limited Late Models and Hobby Stocks.  For further information, check out www.antiochspeedway.com.

Sprint Cars, Modifieds On Tap For Speedway
On Saturday Night

After two weeks off, Antioch Speedway returns to life on Saturday night with a six division show.  The six division Northern All Stars program will feature Winged 360 Sprint Cars, Wingless Spec Sprints, A Modifieds, B Modifieds, Hobby Stocks and Limited Late Models. The show offers a little something for everybody.

The Winged 360 Sprint Car race is a battle between 2007 champion Art McCarthy and past Wingless Spec Sprint champion Billy Aton.  Both are feature winners this year, and McCarthy holds a slim 148-146 lead after three races.  Dan Gonderman 144, Rick "Doc"  Brophy 104 and Koen Shaw 100 are next in line.  Shaw is coming off of an impressive feature victory last time out.  Amazingly enough, Shawn Arriaga is just 20 points out of third in the standings despite missing the season opener.

If you like your Sprint Cars Wingless, the Spec Sprints may just be for you.  Coming off of his win last time out, Jim Perry Jr. leads Roy Fisher by a 148-136 margin.  Rick Panfili is a close third with 132 points as Alan Miranda, Marcus Smith and James East are tied for fourth with 124 points.  Smith and Dan Gonderman are also feature winners this year, while Miranda and long time racer Panfili are searching for their first wins.

The A Modified division finds 2014 champion Carl Berendsen II leading Ray Lindeman, 208-182 in another close race.  Both drivers are on a quest for their first wins.  Nobody has more wins in this division than five time champion Scott Busby, who has 171 points.  Aaron Crowell 146 and the tied Trent Wentworth and rookie Bobby Montalvo 136 make up the remainder of the Top 5.  Feature winners this season include Crowell, Jeff Decker, Bobby Hogge IV, Josh Combs and Oreste Gonella.

With three second place finishes so far, Al Johnson leads two time winner Trevor Clymens, 314-272 in the B Modified point race.  Rookie Shane DeVolder is a close third with 266 points as Danny Jones 252 and K.C. Keller 184 make up the remainder of the Top 5.  Reigning champion Fred Ryland and Anthony Giuliani are multiple feature winners this season.

When it comes to Limited Late Model wins, four time champion Larry Damitz and two time champion Mike Gustafson combine for over 80 of them.  Both have feature wins this year as the 87 year old Damitz leads rookie Kimo Oreta, 154-144 in the standings.  Mark Garner is a close third with 142 points on the trail of his first win of the season.  Jim Freethy won the most recent race and ranks fourth with 136 points as the steady John Evans is fifth with 126 tallies.  Could it be Evans getting his first win this week?

Rookie Guy Ahlwardt has proven that his beautiful #10 Hobby Stock is as fast as it looks.  The one time winner holds a 244-179 lead over Natalie Perry.  Perry is in the midst of her best season yet and looking for her first win in the division.  The battle is close for second as Cameron Swank 178, Danny Jones 173 and the tied Michael Cooper and rookie Lindsey Buirch 170 complete the Top 5.  There are five winners in five races as Jones, two time champion Melissa Myers, three time champion Kimo Oreta and Chris Long are the other winners.  Will a new winner emerge this week?

Six divisions will make this a must see show on Saturday night.  The racing program will continue at the Contra Costa County Fairgrounds based race track all the way through September.  Ticket Prices: Family Ticket (2 Adults & 2 Children) $40.00 Adult Ticket (13-64) $15.00 Child Ticket (6-12) $10.00 Senior Ticket (65 and over) $12.00 Children 5 and under FREE NOTE: Parking is $5.00 per car charged by the fairgrounds (not the Speedway).   For further information, check www.antiochspeedway.com.

Brown, Lewis Score Merced Fairtime Victories

Merced, CA...June 8...The 125th Annual Merced County Fair brought out many race car drivers looking for a chance to race in front of a good crowd on the fast quarter-mile clay oval.  In the IMCA Modified division, it was Randy Brown getting the win in the 25 lap Main Event, while Ben Lewis II crossed the line first in the 25 lap Hobby Stock race.

A past champion in IMCA Modifieds at his home track in Chowchilla, Randy Brown is making a good case for himself at Merced this season.  Brown notched his second win of the season, but it didn't come easy.  Past Merced and Hanford champion Paul Stone looked high and low for a way by, but Brown made no mistakes enroute to the well earned victory.  P. Stone had to keep his cool as well or his mutli time Merced championship winning cousin Ramie Stone would have slipped past for second.  As it was, R. Stone finished a strong third ahead of the season debut of fourth generation racer Ryan Porter and Jeff Streeter.  Mike Villanueva finished sixth as Mitch Enos, Robert Dias, Derek Nance and Ryan Larimer made up the remainder of the Top 10.

Earlier this season, Ben Lewis II scored what appeared to be his first Hobby Stock victory, only to have it taken away from him in post race tech.  Lewis II was back with a vengeance this week, but it didn't come easy.  He had to deal, with numerous restarts and multi time division champion Raul Rodriguez Sr. shadowing his every move.  Rodriguez attempted a last lap move on the inside in Turn 4, but he ended up getting sideways and making a run through the infield.  Lewis II was a happy winner as Rodriguez settled for second.  Robbie Loquaci was a season best third, and B Main winner Tommy Bostic made a charge from the back of the pack to finish fourth ahead of Ben Lewis.  Dave Bettencourt was sixth ahead of Gary Hildebrand, Kodie Dean, Cody Parker and Kevin Joaquin.

Up next for Merced Speedway is a June 18th program featuring IMCA Sport Modifieds, Hobby Stocks, Mini Stocks and Valley Sportsman.  For further  information, check out www.racemerced.com.

Hardtops Return To Roseville, Antioch In June

The key to any good racing division, even a vintage division, is the infusion of new drivers. Some of the regulars in any division may get busy or just step away. When that happens, you know there is new talent ready to step up. So far this year, the California Hardtop Association has three different feature winners, all of them first timers. They will be looking for more when they head to Roseville and Antioch Speedway .

In the most recent race at Antioch, Dave Mackey grabbed his first ever victory driving his red and white #1 Hardtop in tribute to The Dudley Racing Family. Dave has had some interesting experiences in his short racing career, but he looked like an old pro in the last race. He had the pass two time winner Jason Clifford and last year's most dominant driver in the group, Rob Waldrop, to do it.

Mackey had watched Hardtop racing at Vallejo Speedway some forty years ago, and he'd always wanted to get behind the wheel of a car himself. After building a car with open wheel ace Jim Perry Jr. and putting Perry behind the wheel of it with some success a few years ago, he started driving his own car last year. His win on Saturday would seem to indicate that Dave has gotten the hang of it. Waldrop, who continues to drive the #36 car for Bill McLaughlin, knows he has some competition.

There is further competition being provided by The father-son duo of Ken Clifford and Jason Clifford. After getting his own car, Ken got a car for his son Jason last year. Jason is driving a car that Steve Lemley competed in at Sacramento and Orland and won the first two modern era California races with back in 2002. Not wanting to be shown up by the car's previous owner, Jason has won Main Events at Placerville and Antioch this year. If not for some brake issues on his car, it could have been three at Antioch.

Nicknamed "The Rocket Man" by his fellow competitors for his uncanny ability to start at the front of the pack and end up at the back, Ken Clifford surprised the field when he scored his first win at Chico two races ago. To get that win, he had to battle Joe Hopp and Ron Ruiz, who are both looking for their first wins. Hopp ended up finishing second in what has been his best finish in the group so far.

The new faces at the front of the pack are certainly making things interesting, and Ken Clifford wanted to do something special for the front runners. To that end, Clifford has sponsored top three finishers trophies for the latest Antioch race and the next four races. Clifford did that because he thought it was a nice touch that the drivers would appreciate.

When the group rolls into Roseville, it's hard to say who might show up, but drivers we're looking for include Club President John Philbert, Russ Kraft, Hopp, the Clifford cars and possibly a car from the Armstrong team. Some of the drivers aren't as enthusiastic about racing on the pavement, but the ones who do like to race there have a lot of fun. Roseville is also the site of the big Vintage Classic event that's held every year in October.

At Antioch, word is that veteran Tommy Thomson should be back in his familiar green #39 car. Thompson was one of those competitors that was there when Conrad Cavallaro started this group about 10 years ago. The #39 car has won Main Events at Vallejo Speedway back in the late 1970's and has won several Main Events with this group since it started. In fact, Tommy has even won races with the Okie Bowl Hardtop group at Santa Maria.

Antioch is the track giving the group most of its dates this year. Promoter John M. Soares was the promoter who gave the group their first break. With Thomson and Waldrop likely to be in the field and Larry Damitz's Modified Hardtop, things should be interesting.

The California Hardtop Association has many great competitors in it, including the steady John Turner, hard chargers Dennis Armstrong and his son Jason Armstrong, Dan Whitney, Steve Cloyes and Zack Frasier. Word is that the car of Doug Broderick isn't that far away from debuting.

Hardtop racing will continue throughout the year, and the group will make other appearances at tracks such as Placerville, Calistoga, Petaluma and Chico. These old Hardtops hearken back to the days when the division was in its heyday, but don't let that fool you. These cars still put on a good show out there on the race track. Roseville on June 11th and Antioch on June 25th should be no different.

Racing, Bike Giveaway On Tap For
Orland Raceway On Sunday

Orland, CA...The new promoters of Orland Raceway made good on their plans to open the gates and begin a new season of racing last Saturday night.  A field of roughly two dozen cars and Micro Sprints were there to do battle on the 1/5th mile dirt oval.  The program consisted of Pure Stocks, Mini Stocks, Mini Trucks and 600 and 250 Micro Sprints.

When racing resumes this Sunday afternoon, the same divisions will again be a part of the action packed program.  Not only that, but there will be a bike and helmet giveaway to a lucky young fan, courtesy of Jason and Jerry Richardson of Penner's Auto Service.

In addition to the wheel to wheel racing that was taking place last Saturday night, the current management took it upon themselves to honor most of last year's champions before the races.  With that matter settled, the track is setting its sights on crowning new champions for the 2016 season.  Results for the season opener are pending.

Video footage showed Jackie Whitson Jr. leading Jackie Whitson  Sr. and six others in a Micro Sprint race.  Past Hobby Stock champion Steve Martin led Jeremy Langenderfer and Cody Bundy in a Hobby Stock race.  Defending champion Keith Ross led double division racer "Rollin" Olin Crane and Nate Skaggs in a Mini Truck race. Eric Hammond was back in Mini Stocks after being absent for a couple seasons as he led a race ahead of Tom Davis and Crane.  Again, results for the season opener are pending.

As for the Sunday race, it was just announced that alcohol sales will be a part of the concessions starting Sunday, courtesy of East Coast Foods.  Pit gates will open at 9:00 a.m., the grandstands at 11:00 a.m. and the first race at 12:00 p.m.  General admission tickets are $7.00, children 7-12 are $5.00 and children 6 and under are free.  For further information, check out www.orlandraceway.org.

Round #4 Of Winged 360 Sprint Car Series
Heads to Antioch Speedway

The competition has been close in the Winged 360 Sprint Car division at Antioch Speedway. The competitive division has seen three different winners in three races so far. As word has spread about this division, we have seen some fast competitors take their turns on the fast 3/8 mile banked clay oval.

The May 21st event was a non stop race. Watsonville competitor Koen Shaw emerged with an impressive victory. Shaw made his first visit to the speedway in the previous race and left with a strong third place showing. When he returned last time, he didn't come alone. This time, Logan Seavey was there piloting the #92 car normally driven by Koen's brother Kyler.

There has been plenty of speculation about the Winged 360 Sprint Car division at Antioch Speedway since promoter John M. Soares added the division as part of his lineup of Northern All Star divisions. However, the message is clear. There is a commitment to establishing this division at the track. Gradually, new drivers are coming out and giving it a shot.

While Shaw and Seavey were grabbing the first and second positions, a well known Sacramento area Sprint Car driver was paying a visit. Past Marysville champion Colby Wiesz has been at the track before and done well. As with Seavey, Wiesz also captured his heat race on the evening, and he drove to a third place feature finish.

One driver who has unquestionably supported Sprint Car racing every time the division has been welcomed at the track is Art McCarthy. McCarthy is a past division champion and has finished in the top three in points for the last two seasons. His victory in the season opener showed his intentions. If you want to win the championship, you have to go through him. This season, the McCarthy's are a two car team as Art's son Adam, a past feature winner at Antioch himself, has returned to action.

Billy Aton has emerged to contend with McCarthy for the track championship. The past Wingless Spec Sprint champion is a feature winner this year, and he finished fifth in the Main Event last time out after having to start tenth as the previous winner. Billy figures to be a major factor in this championship battle.

Meanwhile, Shawn Arriaga was a late starter this year having missed the first race. The 2015 track champion has picked up back to back top five finishes with his recent fourth place effort.  He has finished in front of his rival McCarthy both times. Shawn has to make up for that lost race, but if anybody can do it, this third generation racer has the ability.  McCarthy ended up a disappointed sixth last time out.

Finishing seventh was another open wheel veteran, Burt Foland Jr. Foland has raced in both Midgets and Sprint Cars, and it wouldn't be a surprise to see him get a win at some point this season. It was Dan Gonderman, Rick Brophy and son Ricky Brophy who rounded out the top 10 in the most recent race.  Gonderman and the elder Brophy are both currently Top 5 ranked drivers.

Nearly two dozen different cars have competed in the three races so far, and there were 12 cars last time out. It appears as if this division is on the rise and better days are ahead. The Winged Sprint Cars will be joined by the Wingless Spec Sprints on the card at Antioch Speedway on June 11th. Further information can be gathered at www.antiochspeedway.com.

Parker Era Begins With A Bang At Merced Speedway

People were asking for change at Merced Speedway, and what they got was far beyond what they expected.  A new promoter stepped in to bring change to the speedway, and that man is Ed Parker. While engaged in lengthy negotiations with Oval Motorsports, Parker was already putting together his crew. From the moment he thought about becoming the promoter, Parker had a definite game plan in mind.

Three of the first people that he recruited were General Manager Doug Williams and Announcer Dale Falkenburg, who has helped put some promotional things together for the speedway. Parker also enlisted good friend Tim Ragsdale to handle the track preparation. All three of these moves have paid off pretty well for the speedway so far.

In Ragsdale, the racers have been given a smooth racing surface. In Falkenburg the speedway has an enthusiastic promotional guy. This has led to candy giveaways for the kids, concerts underneath the grandstands and other fun stuff. In Williams, the racers have a General Manager that they respect.

There were no big changes when it came to the divisions at the speedway. When Williams was the General Manager a couple years ago, the speedway had solid car counts in the IMCA Sport Modifieds and the IMCA Modified divisions. The expectations were that the car count would come back in both classes, and the Sport Modifieds have delivered big time.

Indications were that car count was improving in both the Hobby Stock and Mini Stock divisions last year under Oval Motorsports. Those trends continued under Parker and Williams. In fact, like the Sport Modified division, the Hobby Stock division has needed B Mains on several occasions this year.

Parker attempted to secure dates from one of the two traveling Dwarf Car associations, but the schedules were already booked. Rather than try to keep the track's Dwarf Car division that Oval Motorsports had instituted last year, Parker decided to wait until next year. While the track continues to try to work to revive the Valley Sportsman effort, The Limited Late Model division has been shelved. Focus has been put on the core four divisions.

The IMCA Modified division has been very competitive this year, and feature wins have been shared among five different drivers.  It was 2014 Champion Paul Stone kicking off the season with a win, and 2012 champion and current point leader Bill Egleston has a win as well. Jeff Streeter and Bakersfield visitor Ethan Dotson are both winners this year, and it was Ramie Stone finally getting his car sorted out in the biggest race of the year, the All Star Modified Tour race.

Though there are a few name drivers missing from last year's roster, that has been more than made up for with new additions to the roster this year. Rookie Bruce "Bubba" Nelson has done quite well this year with multiple top 5 finishes. Late Model veterans Chris Shannon and Derek Nance have been competing this year, and Chris's son D.J. Shannon has also debuted his own ride. Past Antioch Speedway Sport Mod champion Jeremy Hoff recently made his Modified debut as well.

While the Modified division has been very competitive this year and will probably see a few more winners before the season is up, the Sport Modified division has been off the chain. After John Fore Jr. passed away prior to the season, 2014 champion Rick Diaz took John's car number as a tribute to him and is making an effort to win the championship. He is already a two time feature winner this year, but he's found some competition in one time winner Steve Stone and the very consistent Mike Drake. Though Drake is without a win yet, he has two top three finishes driving for George Medeiros and seems poised to get a win soon.

Past IMCA State and Bakersfield champion Nick Spainhoward was a recent Main Event winner on Ted Stoffle Classic night. The competition in this division is intense just to make the Main Event, and there are some drivers without a win who you should be seeing get a win at some point this year. On the list of likely feature winners are Chris Falkenburg, Gary Tucker and defending champion Josh Hensley.

It is rare in this day and age to have divisions that needs B Mains, and Merced Speedway has two of them. There are some pretty darn good racers on the roster of Sport Modifieds, including 2015 point runner up Mark Odgers, Dwayne Short, Alex Odissio, Nick Tucker, Danny Roe and Tim Prothro. Several drivers are just getting into the Sport Modified division, including young guns Gavin Espino, Tanner Thomas and his brother Chase Thomas. The Thomas boys have a good teacher as their father is three time Street Stock champion Darren Thomas.

Speaking of Street Stocks, the Hobby Stock division is the heir apparent to the Street Stocks. Just as the Hobby Stock division was last year, it has been a wide open race this year with multiple feature winners. Raul "Showtime" Rodriguez Sr., a multi time Hobby Stock champion, picked up his second feature win of the season last time out. Rodriguez is joined on the feature winner's list this year by recent Ted Stofle Classic winner Phil Vaughn, point leader Michael Shearer, two time Watsonville champion Terry Campion and Bubba Nelson.

Still looking for wins and likely to get them are current second ranked driver Kristie Shearer, the wife of Michael, and 2015 champion Kevin Joaquin. Joaquin finally grabbed his first top three finish of the year last time out. 2015 third ranked driver Austin Van Hoff should be a winner at some point this year, but as a recent high school graduate, he already is a winner.  Other drivers looking good so far this year are the surprising Dexter Long, Robby Loquaci, Kodie Dean, Garrett Corn and George Silva.

Many times, the Hobby Stock division steals the show. The racing is close and sometimes a little bit too close, but the Hobby Stock division always seems to entertain the fans. It will not be a surprise to see another half a dozen or more new feature winners before the season is done. And, you never know when somebody unexpected will get a win. Keep an eye on Chris Williams, Adam Reed, Cody Parker, Gary Hildebrand, Darren Miguel and John Hensley as drivers who could win at some point this season.

Chris Corder will probably win the Mini Stock division championship. It's not necessarily a knock on his competition, it's just a tribute to the skill level of Corder, who is the 2015 point runner up and 2014 champion. Corder knocked out three Main Event wins in a row before finally being beaten last time out by Jason Lewis.  Corder actually didn't finish that Main Event.

The Corder team brings out three cars and sometimes four to the race track. Chris's second team car has been driven very well by Joy Alger, who has two third place finishes. It was Robert Alger who drove the second Corder car to a feature win last year, and it won't be a surprise to see Joy get one this year. After selling her Hobby Stock, the car she finished second in points with last year, Jennifer Corder has returned to the Mini Stocks. Jennifer chased her brother in the points in 2014 to finish second in the standings. Not to be forgotten in the mix is top five ranked "Rookie Of The Year" hopeful Destiny Carter, who continues to improve with each race in another Corder car.

Mike Germait and James Stockton are two drivers who seem to be in the hunt for a feature win. Others, such as Brian Widdowson, Paul Lauretti, Curtis Thornhill, Steven Johnson and Tony Peffer, are drivers who could pick up a win at any time. They might need a little help from mechanical failure on the number #68 car of Corder.

The renaissance of the Mini Stock division is a good thing for Merced Speedway. You need a division that brings new drivers into the fold, and this division fits the bill. It was another four cylinder division, the Mini Trucks of the 1990's, that brought Merced Speedway some of the best drivers that it's ever had. Two of those drivers, Paul Stone and Ramie Stone, continue to run strong in IMCA Modifieds to this day.  One of those drivers, Ed Parker, is the track's promoter.

Despite its difficult time, Ed Parker and Doug Williams continue to hang in there with the Valley Sportsman division. Right now, there seems to be at least ten cars available, but the highest the division has gotten so far this season is five. The man who has been really boosting the division and trying to get support for it, Kenny Birdsong, finally got his first two feature wins in the last two races. Kenny wheels the #25m car, reminiscent of the car driven by Rod Poor in the 1970's. When he finally won his first race, he dedicated it to Poor.

Two time champion Mike Friesen made his return to the division in a newly painted race car. Mike hasn't been racing so much at Merced Speedway in recent years, and he is a definite welcome addition to the class. Mike loves the nostalgia thing and has competed in Hardtops and Super Modifieds as well. Eric Sealy, Jeff Bristow, Mike Palmberg and Tim Prothro are other drivers who have competed this year.

The Valley Sportsman cars are some of the neatest race cars that you're going to find, and hopefully more cars will be returning to the speedway in the weeks ahead. If they do, they're going to find a promotional team that cares about them. Back in the 1970's, General Manager Doug Williams even drove one of these cars.

The track continues to try different promotional ideas all the time. Ed Parker treats the community at the speedway like they are family, and he is constantly looking for new ways to honor the past. One of the big ways is Legends Night on August 13th, which was reestablished a couple years ago by Williams. Parker has confirmed that there will be a Hall Of Fame in Merced Speedway's future, though he's still figuring all of that out at the moment. First to appear will likely be a collage beneath the grandstands of pictures and past champions through the years.

Still to come on an action packed schedule will be the Timmy Post Memorial Race, complete with Fireworks Show, and the Matt Van Hoecke Fight Against Cancer. On any given Saturday night, as Johnny Sass would say, action is the attraction at Merced Speedway. The season is off to a really good start right now with no signs of letting up.  Next up will be this Wednesday's fair race, featuring IMCA Modifieds and Hobby Stocks. For further information on Merced Speedway and its happenings, check out the official website at www.racemerced.com.

Note:  Not long after the Timmy Post Race was announced, things really started to come together.  The July 2nd event will now have a Fireworks Display and that's not all.  An anonymous sponsor has come forward to offer free admission to the fans.  This was something that past Promoter Chuck Griffin would do for 4th Of July races in the past, even though this is typically one of the biggest attended races of the year.  Timmy's Race has always been very special to the competitors, and this is a race that you won't want to miss.

Another of the big races happens tomorrow (June 8th).  The Annual Merced County Fair Race is one the racers like to attend because of the increased fan attendance.  The Hobby Stocks are already a packed show that could need a B Main this week, but word on the Modifieds is that several drivers are making returns.  This includes the return of Troy Stone, a past top 5 driver and multi time feature winner in IMCA Modifieds, three time 2015 feature winner and past Hobby Stock champion Ryan Porter, past Sport Mod champion Ryan Larimer and Karl Rose, who also had a win last season.

Orland Raceway Is Back
New Promoters Set To Reopen The Track Saturday Night

It's not likely that Rich Hood and Nate Skaggs were planning on being racing promoters this year.  You probably would have seen the familiar blue #12 Hobby Stock of Hood and the #49 Mini Truck of Skaggs in competition at Orland Raceway this season.  However, there was no race season scheduled at the Glenn County Fairgrounds racing facility as of February of this year.

Not long after releasing what would have been his second schedule for the renamed Sacramento Valley Speedway, Adam Zachary of High Octane Entertainment was forced to pull the plug on the season.  A concern of his was the new soccer field that had been built at the facility not too far from Turns 3 and 4.  Racing looked to be over at that point.

The past decade has seen a revolving door of promoters with varying degrees of success.  Promoter Mike McCann managed to stage some big open wheel events in his two year run before he too was forced to walk away.  The fact that the track was closed for one year led to some racers getting Mini Stock and Hobby Stock racing established at a Chico Silver Dollar Speedway.  This made it a challenge for new promoters to bring some stability to the raceway.

Other than 2008, the track has managed to have at least some racing every year since 1998.  The concern was that if somebody couldn't get the gates open this year, it might not open again.  This left several racers scrambling to put a proposal together.  Hood made his presentation to the Fair Board in May and was awarded the contract for this season.  There will be ten races with an option for more.

Orland racing history actually goes back into the 1970's.  The current track opened in the late 1980's with Doc Bogart and a few others taking a stab at the promotional side of things.  It wasn't until Paul & Carol Turner took over in 1998 that stability was achieved.  One might call it the "Golden Age" of the speedway.

Throughout the Turner run as promoter, the track featured Hobby Stocks, Mini Trucks and Mini Stocks.  They added Wingless Sprints and Super 4 Modifieds to the mix and put some big races on through the years.  The sluggish economy forced a hard decision for the Turner's to walk away at the end of the 2007 season, and the track sat dormant for a year.

The news of the June 4th opener will be welcome amongst the racers and the fans.  Hood and Skaggs made the determination that the track should go back to it's most popular name, Orland Raceway.  They also intend to run most of the divisions from last year, including Hobby Stocks, 4 Cylinder Trucks and Mini Stocks, 250 Micro Sprints and 600 Micro Sprints.

Other divisions, such as Wingless Sprints, Street Stocks and even Sport Modifieds, could happen in the future, but the goal is to get cars on the track now.  Hood and Skaggs both agree that starting with the local car base is the key to getting it up and running again.

If you've been at the speedway through the years, you've seen some talented racers compete on the one-fifth mile dirt oval.  Racers liked Mario Romano, Ken Lewis, Josh Jacobo, Brad Ray, John Embrey, B.J. Martin, Doug Butterfield, Wes Dinsmore and Steve Martin are among those who have thrilled the crowds in their championship seasons.

The opening of the gates on June 4th signals the next opportunity for a group of new champions to emerge.  Records will show that 2015 championships were earned by Paul Stevens (Hobby Stocks), Nick Vidovich (Mini Stocks), Keith Ross (Mini Trucks), Jeromie Crismon (600 Micro Sprints), Jess Garland (250 Micro Sprints) and Bill Hopper (Wingless Sprints).

Preparations are well underway to get the race track in shape.  They have been adding new clay to the racing surface, making improvements to the facility and making sure the concessions stands are fully stocked for race night.  The track will be ready to go this Saturday night.

The grandstands will open June 4th at 5:00 p.m. with the first race starting at 7:00 p.m.  The admission prices are geared towards families on a budget.  Adult tickets are $7.00, Juniors and Seniors $5.00 and children 6 and under free.  It will be a nice opportunity to see some great racing at Orland Raceway.  For further information, go to www.orlandraceway.org.

Peters, Westlake Latest New Winners At Rocky Hill Speedway

Porterville, CA...May 28..Rocky Hill Speedway wrapped up a busy month of May with a Saturday night show on Memorial Day Weekend.  A good turnout of Hobby Stocks and Mini Stocks made for an entertaining four division program.  When the checkered flag flew on the Main Events, it was Jake Peters (Hobby Stock), Zack Westlake (Mini Stock), Dakota Brown (American Stock) and Roy Atchison (Super 4) getting the victories.

The Hobby Stocks at Rocky Hill Speedway have been very competitive with four different winners heading into the most recent race.  One time winner and defending champion Raymond Noland Jr. came into the night as the point leader ahead of Jake Peters, but his effort took a blow when he DNF'ed the race in ninth.  Peters was there to take full advantage of the situation as he drove to his first win of the season.  Colby Quinton might be the point leader if not for the fact that he has missed one race.  He didn't hurt his hopes in the least as he battled Peters for the lead before settling for second.  It was the fourth runner up finish of the year for Quinton.  2015 Bakersfield Speedway champion Kevin Collier came back for more and left with another podium finish in third.  Karl Noland Jr. finished fourth ahead of 2015 Mini Stock champion Jared Plumlee.  Gene Glover finished sixth ahead of Merced visitor George Silva, Robert Jackson, R. Noland and Merced point leader Michael Shearer.  Dave Bettencourt made his second appearance of the season, but he didn't do any beter as he scratched from the Main Event.

In another competitive Mini Stock field, there were 14 entrants.  After back to back Top 5 finishes, Zack Westlake took a week off, but he came back big with a Main Event victory.  One time feature winner Clinton Massey is trying to make up for missing a week, and his second place finish will certainly aid those efforts.  Josh Nichols matched his best effort from the season opener with another third place finish ahead of a season best fourth place finish for Paul Lauretti.  Wade Moore had his season best finish in fifth as Lance Gonzales, Candy Noland-Soares, Steve Scott and Chris Rutledge followed in order.  Point leader Jason Cook opened the season with back to back wins, but he suffered his second straight disappointing effort in tenth.

Bakersfield Speedway point leader Dakota Brown came to compete with the Rocky Hill Speedway American Stock class and won for the third time.  Cale Hosfeldt's had a season best second place finish ahead of point leader Bob Ellis, Monte Ince and defending champion Jeff Lloyd.  Super 4 Point leader Roy Atchison's undefeated streak continued as he won the Main Event for the fifth time ahead of Lance Gonzales and William Hughes.
