Collier, Massey, Brown Grab Rocky Hill Victories

Porterville, CA...The good start to the 2016 season continued Saturday night at Rocky Hill Speedway.  The four division program featured nice car counts for the Hobby Stocks and Mini Stocks.  Drivers grabbing the wins on the night included Kevin Collier (Hobby Stocks), Clinton Massey (Mini Stocks), Dakota Brown (American Stocks) and Roy Atchison (Super 4's).

Going back to the San Joaquin Valley Series of the 1990's, Kevin Collier has been a force between the tracks in Portervile and Bakersfield.  Back then, it was Street Stocks, but these days it's Hobby Stocks.  The 2015 Bakersfield champion Collier lives in Porterville.  He returned to his home track and collected the victory ahead of Colby Quinton.  He became the third different winner in the competitive field.  Quinton settled for to his second consecutive runner up finish, while defending champion Raymond Noland Jr. completed the podium finish.  2015 Mini Stock champion Jared Plumlee managed a fourth place finish ahead of veteran Karl Noland.  Gene Glover finished sixth ahead of 2014 Mini Stock champion Joe Robinson.  Robert Jackson made his Hobby Stock debut in the former Jennifer Corder car with an eighth place finish as James Cornelius and Don Mead completed the Top 10 in the 15 car field.

Clinton Massey has a Hobby Stock and a Mini Stock, but he brought his Mini Stock on Saturday night to compete in the 13 car field.  Jason Cook has been on a roll with two feature wins.  After his third place finish last time out, Massey was hoping to end Cook's streak.  The third ranked driver in 2015, Massey accomplished that goal.  Chris Rutledge made his first visit since June of last season and had a strong second place finish ahead of rookie Steven Scott.  Point leader Cook settled for fourth ahead of Zack Westlake, Josh Nichols, Wade Moore, Lance Gonzales, Jose Rosales and Candy Soares.

The American Stocks were able to have their own race again as six cars competed.   Bakersfield point leader Dakota Brown collected the win ahead of former Mini Stock racer Bob Ellis and another Bakersfield competitor, Tyler Johnson.  2015 champion Jeff Lloyd, rookie Monte Ince and Clay Walters completed the finishing order.

In Super 4's competition, defending champion  Roy Atchison's reign of domination continued as he won the Main Event once again.  Russell Silvas and double division racer Kit Murphy made up the remainder of the field.  J.J. Hughes and Larry Ramirez were Main Event scratches.

The busy month of May continues as these same four divisions will race this Friday night and come back on May 28th for another race.

Decker, Perry, Clymens Share Antioch Winner's Circle

Antioch, CA...Saturday night at Antioch Speedway featured another action packed event that entertained the crowd and concluded at a reasonable time.  When the checkered flag flew on the five Main Events, it was Jeff Decker (A Modifieds), Jim Perry Jr. (Wingless Spec Sprints), Trevor Clymens (B Modifieds), Mark Biscardi (Dwarf Cars) and Melissa Hansen (Hobby Stocks), collecting the victories.

All last season, while he was winning the Late Model championship, Jeff Decker was working on his A Modified.  It's ready now, and he has begun racing in this division as well.  With a few of the name drivers not at the track tonight, defending champion Scott Busby was hoping he might add to his all time division leading win total.  Unfortunately, he ran into to an obstacle in Decker's #84 car.  Decker drove a good race and chased down the flying Busby.  Busby led most of the way until Decker made a nice pass for the lead on lap 17, forcing Busby to settle for second.  Trent Wentworth enjoyed one of his best efforts in a while as he won his heat race and finished third in the feature.  The other heat race winner, 2014 champion Carl Berendsen II, was fourth as Norm Boeck rounded out the Top 5.

After back to back third place finishes in Wingless Spec Sprint competition, Jim Perry Jr. decided he had enough of that.  The all time winner in Spec Sprint racing with over 40 feature triumphs, Perry Jr. grabbed the lead and set sail for his first win of the season.  Only one early yellow slowed the pace, and Perry Jr. would leave the pack behind from there.  He was chased across the line by his son, Jimmy Perry III.  The father and son are both past division champions.  After winning his heat race, Roy Fisher collected a respectable third ahead of defending champion Kyle Bakkie and heat winner James East.

Last time the Dwarf Cars were in action, Bay Area Dwarf Car competitor Mark Biscardi paid the track a visit and brought home the victory.  He liked it so much that he returned and impressed with another feature win.  Biscardi's win came ahead of title contender Kevin Miraglio, who is still searching for his first win.  This second place finish was Miraglio's third Top 3 finish of the season.  Miraglio was also a heat race winner.  Tim Reeder enjoyed his best career finish in third, while heat race winner Chuck Weir was fourth.  Teammates Mike Corsaro and Charlie Correia were fifth and sixth, respectively.  Corsaro came into the night as the point leader ahead of Miraglio.

The Hobby Stocks produced a solid 17 car field, and point leader Guy Ahlwardt was a heat winner along with Danny Jones and two time division champion Melissa Myers.  The Main Event was a fast paced, non stop affair that saw Myers grab the lead.  Once she had it, she would not relinquish it as she became the fifth different feature winner in five races.  Ahlwardt gave a it a good effort before settling for second.  After rolling his daughter's car in his season debut last time out, past Street Stock champion Rob Waldrop was just happy to keep his car on four wheels.  He did better than that as he grabbed the final podium position in third.  Cameron Swank continues to compete with fifth ranked Natalie Perry for a Top 5 point ranking, and that won't change after he finish fourth ahead of the hard charging Perry in this race.

Trevor Clyemens is on a roll in B Modifieds and will creep back up the point leader if this continues.  The second generation leadfoot collected his second straight Main Event victory.  If not for missing a race, Clymens might very well be leading the standings now.  Clymens had to work for this one after starting back in the fifth row.  He steadily worked his way to the front to battle with Brian Pearce for the lead as they hit lapped traffic down the stretch.  Clymens would use traffic to get the win.  Pearce wasn't as lucky as contact with one of the slower cars sent him into the front wall.  Meanwhile, rookie Shane DeVolder would grab his second runner up finish of the season.  DeVolder came into the night second in points and will gain a little on incoming point leader Al Johnson, who missed the top five this time.  Heat winner Lloyd Cline grabbed a season best third ahead of K.C. Keller and double division racer Danny Jones.  Paul Mulder was the other heat race winner.

Racing resumes next Saturday night at Antioch Speedway with a six division program that features Winged 360 Sprint Cars, A Modifieds, Limited Late Models, B Modifieds, Dwarf Cars and California Hardtops.  For further information, check out the official website at www.antiochspeedway.com.

Diaz, Nelson Merced Speedway Winners

Saturday night at Merced Speedway offered a little something for everybody last week.  There was the pre race Sweet 16 Birthday celebration for Destiny Carter and Zoe Sandoval.  There was a candy toss at intermission for the kids.  Then, there was plenty of great racing on the quarter-mile dirt oval.  When respected flag man Doug Laidlaw waved the checkered flag on the Main Events, it was Rick Diaz grabbing the victory in IMCA Sport Modifieds, Bruce "Bubba" Nelson getting the win in Hobby Stocks, Jason Lewis emerging victorious in Mini Stocks and Kenny Birdsong getting his first win in the Valley Sportsman class.

With two wins already this year and a front row start, 2014 IMCA Sport Modified champion Rick Diaz seemed like the likely winner of that division's feature.  However, Watsonville Friday night winner Anthony Giuliani was lined up on the outside to make things interesting.  Giuliani already has wins at three different tracks and was looking for his fourth track.  However, Diaz was not to be denied as he prevailed for the third time this year to keep the point battle close.  Giuliani settled for second with veteran Gary Tucker third.  Tim Elias was forth and Chris Falekenerg rounded out the Top 5.  Dave Gibson finished sixth ahead of incoming point leader Steve Stone, 2015 point runner up Mark Odgers, Mike Drake and defending champion Josh Hensley.

In the midst of his potential "Rookie Of The Year" season in IMCA Modifieds, Bruce Nelson got the chance to drive one of the Shearer Racing Team Hobby Stocks.  The two time Hobby Stock champion would get a front row start and used it for the Main Event win.  However, Dexter Long has been knocking on the door to his first career win.  The second year racer briefly took the lead from Nelson, but he couldn't quite pull it off.  Nelson won with Long settling for an apparent third straight second place finish.  Ben Lewis crossed the line third ahead of recent Ted Stofle Classic winner Phil Vaughn, Ben Lewis II, Kodie Dean and Garrett Corn.  Post race tech shuffled the order with Nelson still winning and Vaughn the new second place finisher ahead of Ben Lewis, Dean and Corn.  The B Main was a battle between 2015 champion Kevin Joaquin and George Silva.

The Mini Stock race would not go to point leader Chris Corder this time as he failed to finish.  It was Jason Lewis and James Stockton up at the front, and Lewis notched his first career victory.  Stockton was a season best second ahead of a second straight third place finishing position for Joy Alger.  Lucy Falenkeberg was fourth ahead of rookie Destiny Carter, Jennifer Corder, Mike Germait, Brian Widdowson and Chris Corder.

One of the biggest boosters out there trying to drum up support for the Sportsman division is Kenny Birdsong.  On Saturday night, it was Kenny's time to shine.  He drove a good race in the Rod Poor tribute car and would win his first Main Event.  Eric Seely was second ahead of the season debut of two time champion Mike Freisen's newly painted car.  Mike Palmberg and Jeff Bristow rounded out the Top 5.

Racing continues next Saturday night with the track hosting the second round of the All Star IMCA Modified series.  Hobby Stocks, Honda HPD Midgets and Valley Sportsman cars are also a part of the program.  For further information, check out www.racemerced.com.

Johnson, Schank Win PitStopUSA.com
Six Shooter Series Races At Petaluma Speedway

It was the second round of the four race PitStopUSA.com Six Shooter Series for Winged 360 Sprint Cars and Wingless Spec Sprints on the fast, 3/8th mile Petaluma Speedway adobe oval.  When the checkers fell on the Sprint Car races, it was Chase Johnson (Winged 360 Sprints) and Terry Schank Jr. (Wingless Spec Sprints) grabbing the wins.  Other wins were collected by Oreste Gonella (IMCA Modifieds), Matt Hagerman (Dwarf Cars) and Darien Balestrini (Mini Stocks).

A strong showing of PitStopUSA.com Winged 360 Sprint Cars saw Seth Nunes win a heat race ahead of D.J. Freitas.  Kurt Nelson won his heat ahead of Roberto Kirby, while Riley Matson won his heat over Geoff Ensign.  Nelson had a front row start for the Main Event and was an early leader ahead of division veteran Andy Forsberg and Nunes.  Johnson settled into an early fourth.  Nelson fell out on Lap eight as Forsberg took command ahead of Nunes and Johnson.  Johnson slipped past Nunes for third on lap ten and would eventually overtake Forsberg by lap 20.  Once he got the lead, Johnson stayed smooth and brought it home to a well earned victory.  Forsberg settled for second ahead of Ensign, Kenny Drew, Klint Simpson, Kirby, Bradley Terrell, John Clarke, Anthony Restad and Aaron Miller.

The PitStopUSA.com Wingless Spec Sprint feature had all the makings of another Klint Simpson flag to flag romp to victory.  The 2015 champion grabbed the lead early on and seemed like a good bet to win. However, many time Spec Sprint champion Terry Schank Jr. had other ideas.  A heat winner earlier in the evening, Schank grabbed third from Barry Pries Jr. on lap three and took second from rookie Matthew Haulot not long after that.  Simpson led the way for several laps, but Schank wasn't far behind.  On lap 21, Schank finally made his winning move around Simpson.  Schank went on to victory.  Problems on the last lap dropped Simpson back several positions.  Recent winner Shayna Sylvia crossed the line second ahead of Haulot, Troy DeGaton and a disappointed Simpson.  Brian Grier was sixth ahead of Bruno Bianchi, Ryon Siverling, Keith Covino and Rick Holbrook.  Pries won a heat over Simpson, while Schank held off DeGaton to win his heat.

Defending General Hydroponics Dwarf Car Champion Dave Mosier is already off to a great start this year, but a rare non Top 10 finish left the door open for others to make a big gain.  Second and third ranked John Peters and Carroll Mendenhall were up to the challenge.  Mendenhall won his heat race ahead of Miranda Chappa, while Peters grabbed a heat win in front of Scooter Gomes.  Gomes was the early Main Event leader while Matt Hagermann worked his way past Mendenhall for second.  Just past the midway point of the race, Gomes saw his great run up front come to an end.  Hagermann took over at that point and would lead the rest of the way in victory.  Peters was a strong second while Chappa was a career best third.  Mendenhall settled for fourth ahead of Tommy King, Chad Mathias, Zack Albers, Zack Atcheson, Danny Naron and Brandon Gentry, all on the lead lap.

Past champion and second generation racer Oreste Gonella came into the night tied with six time champion Michael Paul Jr. for the McLea's Tires IMCA Modified point lead.  After winning his heat race ahead of Mitch Machado, Gonella grabbed the Main Event lead early on and was never really threatened as he scored the impressive victory.  Paul Jr. had a good battle with Machado for second that saw them change positions a few times before Paul Jr. made it stick on lap ten.  Machado settled for third ahead of Nick Viscusi III, veteran Mike Karinen, Joel Myers and Michael Paul Sr.

Only eight points separated William Fatu, defending champion Eden McCormick and Darien Balestrini in a close Jake's Performance Hobbies Mini Stock point race.  Balestrini was hoping to make a big gain after holding off rookie Austin Ohlinger to win his heat race.  Balestrini followed that up with an impressive flag to flag run in his Main Event victory.  Fatu won his heat race ahead of Kelly Campanile and seemed on his way to second in the Main Event before Campanile made a move down the stretch to grab the position.  Fatu settled for third ahead of Ohlinger.  Sid Hess and Snazzy Duckworth rounded out the lead lap finishers.  Mike Curley and Justin Whisman rounded out the Top 8.

Watsonville, Hanford, Chico Friday Night Review

Friday night was a busy night in California with three tracks in action.  There was plenty of open wheel racing with those three tracks all hosting Sprint Cars and having at least one form of Modifieds.   Of note was an exciting finish in IMCA Modifieds at Ocean Speedway in Watsonville, won by defending track champion Bobby Hogge IV over the returning Alex Wilson.  Justin Sanders continued to roll in Taco Bravo Sprint Cars at Watsonville, while Johnathon Allard forced Sean Becker to again settle for second in 410 Sprint Cars at Chico Silver Dollar Speedway.  Phillip Shelby (IMCA Sport Modifieds) and Tony Richards (Wingless Spec Sprints) were other Chico winners.  At  Hanford, Kellen Chadwick battled Cody Laney to win the IMCA Modified Main Event, while Cory  Eliason snatched a Sprint Car win away from young Giovanni Scelzi.

Alex Wilson has been missing from the roster in IMCA Modifieds this season, but the 2015 IMCA Modified State champion returned and led the Main Event at Watsonville for 19 laps.  Bobby Hogge IV ran a patient race and gained second with about a half dozen laps left.   With three seconds to make up, the flying Hogge moved to Wilson's rear bumper down the stretch and collected a last lap win.  Wilson settled for second ahead of the Burke brothers, Cody and Austin, and many time champion Kenny Nott.  Austin Burke bested Wilson in the heat race.

Kate Beardsley finished second to Kelly Campanile in the Mini Stock heat race at Watsonville, but she turned the tables on her in the Main Event with a win. Campanile finished second ahead of Bill Beardsley, Amanda Daly and Dennis Keldsen Jr.  The Hobby Stock win went to Nick Triolo in an impressive performance.  Bobby Huckaby was second ahead of two time champion Terry Campion, past champion Wally Kennedy and George Fernandez.  Robert Gallahar won a heat race ahead of Kennedy, while Ron Bonnema won his heat race ahead of Triolo.

Defending champion Justin Sanders bested the 23 car Taco Bravo Sprint Car field in their Main Event.  Past champion Shane Golobic made an early pass on Kurt Nelson and would hold on to second from there ahead of another past champion, Tommy Tarlton, Buddy Kofoid and Brad Furr.  Sanders won his heat race ahead of Jeremy Chisum, but he settled for second in the Trophy Dash behind Nelson.  Kofoid won his heat race ahead of Jason Chisum, while veteran Jerry Bonnema won his heat race ahead of Shane Golobic.

IMCA Sport Modified point lead Anthony Giuliani grabbed another Main Event win as car count reached into double digits.  Igor Gradzuk had his best finish yet in second ahead of Dave Gibson, Dennis Gates and heat winner Justin McPherson.  Giuliani also held off Gradzuk for his heat race win.

The 410 Sprint Cars at Chico saw Johnathon Allard take off to the lead from the start.  Sean Becker drove Dan Menne's car around Chase Madjik for second early on and would go on to get the second place finish ahead of Andy Forsberg, Kyle Hirst and Seth Nunes in the Jim Van Lare car.  Keith Bloom won his heat race ahead of Forsberg, while Allard won his heat ahead of Becker.

Tony Richards went flag to flag in capturing the Wingless Spec Sprint feature at Chico.  He was chased across the line by point leader Terry Schank Jr.  Barry Pries Jr. had another third place finish as Orland veteran Don Emery and Angelique Bell completed the Top 5.  Chris Story won the Winged Encony Sprint feature ahead of Mike Ficklin.  Heat winner Wyatt Brown won a spirited duel with Bob Johnson for third and Mike Sayre rounded out the Top 5.

Marysville Stock Car veteran Phillip Shelby led the distance to win Chico's IMCA Sport Modified Main Event.  There were 18 cars in action, and the Coopers were well accounted for once again as Brian Cooper was second and Todd Cooper was third.  Damion Merritt and Modified veteran Mark Abouzeid rounded out the Top 5.  2015 Marysville champion Howard Law, Kyle Cheney and Shelby won heat races.

At Hanford, Giovanni Scelzi was doing a good job in leading most of the Winged 360 Sprint Car feature.  However, he was passed by Cory Eliason late as Eliason grabbed the win.  Scelzi faded and Colby Copeland was second ahead of Criag Stidham, Mitchell Faccinto and D.J. Netto.  Heath Duinkerken won a heat race ahead of D.J. Netto.  Cole Macedo won his heat over Copeland, while Steven Tiner was the final heat race winner ahead of Stidham.  Scelzi did win the Trophy Dash ahead of Faccinto.

Kellen Chadwick visited Hanford and had a nice tuneup for the All Star Modified race Saturday night in Tulare.  The past Antioch champion chased Cody Laney in second for most of the race before passing him with about five laps to go.  Chadwick would win with Ethan Dotson making a late pass on Laney for second.  Paul Stone and Jeff Streeter rounded out the Top 5.  Chadwick won a heat race ahead of Stone and Dotson won his heat ahead of Laney.

Austin Fry held off a past IMCA Sport Modified champion Nick Spainhoward to win that division's Main Event.  Brenden Fry was third ahead of Kelly Wilkinson.

Ken Clifford Grabs First Hardtop Win At Chico

The 2016 season has produced some fresh new faces in the winner's circle for the CHA Hardtops.  The group hit Chico for their third race of the season, and the checkered flag in the ten lap event waved on another first time winner.  In this case, it was "The Rocket Man" Ken Clifford piloting his #27 car to victory.  An interesting fact about that car is that his motor came from a pickup truck that belonged to country music legend Merle Haggard.

The first two races of the season have been wins for Ken's son, Jason Clifford.  In an effort to show the group where Jason gets it from, Ken made a charge from the third row and took the lead from Ron Ruiz on the last lap with Ruiz spinning  Joe Hopp grabbed the runner up finish.  Russ Kraft suffered mechanical issues to end his night early, and veteran Dennis Armstrong was done before the Main Event.  In the Main Event, K. Clifford raced out to the lead ahead of Ruiz and Joe Hopp.  Ruiz was in contention until being passed by Hopp for second on lap six.  At that point, it didn't matter as K. Clifford brought it home to victory.  Hopp had his best finish yet in second ahead of the steady John Turner.  Ruiz ended up fourth.  Next up for the Hardtops is Antioch Speedway on May 21.

Antioch Speedway Returns From Rainout

It's been an interesting year. For the second time this season, rain just wouldn't let races happen at Antioch Speedway. Though it's doing wonders for the drought, it's not making the races wanting to put their cars on the race track feel better . This week, there is a five division show set to take place at Antioch Speedway, headlined by the Wingless Spec Sprints, A Modifieds, B Modifieds, Dwarf Cars and Hobby Stocks.

After a tumultuous season in which the rules were adjusted and car count dropped to as low as 5 race cars one night, the Spec Sprints seem to be doing better this year. A field of 16 cars competed last time, and it was Marcus Smith grabbing the victory.
Coming off of his "Rookie Of The Year" performance last season, Marcus was set to take it up a notch this year. While preparing a new car for the season, Marcus was offered the ride in the Richard Baden #20 car. Marcus was excited about the opportunity, but his first outing at Marysville resulted in a flip. It didn't get much better when he blew a motor the next time out.

However, the team knew what they had, and they came back strong last time out to show that the teaming of Smith and Basden is a winning combination. Marcus grabbed the victory, and he is not that far out of the point lead.  Plus, it's still early in the game. What is interesting is that the car that Marcus was preparing for this year has won too with Dan Gonderman behind the wheel.

Gonderman finds himself third in the point standings, behind two other division originals. With a pair of third place finishes, the division's all time Main Event win leader and past champion Jim Perry Jr. is the point leader by two points ahead of Rick Panfili. Panfili has already enjoyed a career best night with a second place finish at the opener, and he's hungry for his first career feature win.

The Wingless Spec Sprint roster is stacked with talent, including past champion Jimmy Perry III, NFL alumni Jeremy Newberry, James East, defending champion Kyle Bakkie, rookie Adam Teves and Alan Miranda, who is coming off of a second place finish last time out.

Some of the best A Modified drivers in the state have competed in Antioch's A Modified division this year and are running high in the standings. The man who won the season opener, Aaron Crowell, is your point later, but he has some fast company behind him. Running second as he comes off of runner up performances in both A Modifieds and Late Models last time out is Troy Foulger. Teaming with car owner Billy Bowers, Foulger is a four time division champion with over two dozen career wins at Antioch Speedway alone.

Bobby Hogge IV has made multiple appearances, and not surprisingly he is a Main Event winner this year as well. In fact, Hogge has won Main Events in the A Modifieds and Late Models this year. However, the division has a new feature winner this season as Josh Combs won the Main Event last time out. The former pavement Late Model racer won that race with four past champions running right behind him.

Defending champion and 5 time IMCA Modified titlest Scott Busby has had nothing but bad luck so far this year, but he's anticipated this week along with 2014 Champion Carl Berendsen II, Shawn O'Gara, Chester Kniss and two time Petaluma champion Nick DeCarlo.

At the moment, it is Al Johnson who has stepped up to make a run at the B Modified championship. Johnson is one of the more dedicated racers at the speedway, and he's coming off of a runner up ranking last season. His goal this year is to finally grab a Main Event victory, and he has two second place finishes so far. If Johnson remains dedicated, he'll likely be the driver to win the championship this year.

Trevor Clymens finally got himself a Main Event win this season. The son of Antioch Speedway legend Debbie Clemens, Trevor won the last time out. Word out of Brentwood is that "Fast" Freddy Ryland, the 2015 champion, will be out there this week along with his 2015 "Rookie Of The Year" winning wife Patti Ryland. Fred is a two time Main Event winner as is recent Santa Maria winner Anthony Giuliani. Second ranked Shane DeVolder, a rookie this season, is anticipated along with Danny Jones, Ron Brown and Randy Brown.

In the Dwarf Car division, it appears as if Mike Corsaro and Kevin Miraglio are staking a claim on the championship this year. Corsaro shot out of the gate like a cannonball with the season opening feature victory, followed by a charge from tenth starting to second in the next Main Event. Miraglio has all top 5 finishes so far this year, and he's hot on the trail of his first feature win.

2015 Champion David Teves isn't seriously chasing the championship this year, but he could show up this week and try for a second feature win. Young Buddy Kniss is one of our top five contenders this year and will be there this week along with another top 5 driver, Brian Gray, Miranda Chappa, Tim Reeder and Josh Miller.

In the Hobby Stock division, there have been four different winners in four races. Rookie Guy Ahlwardt has three top three finishes in four starts, including one Main Event win. He leads the point standings ahead of another rookie, Lindsey Buirch. Lindsey is a bit of a surprise, but she's been doing a good job out there of making her laps. Not far behind Lindsey in third is another feature winner, Danny Jones. As it was last year, when Jones isn't running up at the front, he's usually on the sidelines.

2010 Champion Chris Sorensen is off to a good start this year with a Main Event win. He is anticipated this week along with fellow top five point runner Natalie Perry, newcomer Kevin Taylor, Calvin Lewis Jr., Russell Shearer and Jeremy Jennings. Word is that past champion Dan McCown will be there as well.

This week, it's five divisions of racing excitement at Antioch Speedway, headlined by Wingless Spec Sprints, A Modifieds, B Modifieds, Dwarf Cars and Hobby Stocks. It is sure to be a race you won't want to miss. For further information, check out the official website at www.antiochspeedway.com.

Hot IMCA Sport Mod Battle To Dry Off Merced Speedway

Rain has been a major nuisance for Merced Speedway this year, claiming three races so far. Ed Parker and the crew will have the track ready to go this week with a four division show, headlined by IMCA Sport Modifieds, Hobby Stocks, Mini Stocks and Valley Sportsman.

In the IMCA Sport Modified division, there are three drivers battling at the top of the point ladder. Not surprisingly, 2014 Champion Rick Diaz, driving the John Fore Jr. tribute car, is a two time feature winner. Also not a bit of a surprise is the point leader, 2000 Chowchilla Speedway Street Stock champion Steve Stone. Stone is also a feature winner.

You might be surprised by the third driver in the mix, 2015 Dwarf Car champion Mike Drake. On the heels of his impressive performance in Dwarf Cars last season, Drake landed the ride in the George Medeiros owned #07 car. Earlier this season, Drake came from the B Main to a second place feature finish, and he finished third last time out. It seems a good bet that he'll be a Main Event winner this year as well.

Car count has been so good in this division that B Main Events have been needed. The division welcomes newcomers such as Gavin Espino and Tanner Thomas. And, some hard charging veterans such as past Chowchilla Speedway Hobby Stock champion Chris Falkenburg, long time Merced racer Gary Tucker, Dwayne Short, 2015 champion Josh Hensley, Alex Odishoo and Tim Elias are anticipated this week.

When people were talking about who might win the Hobby Stock portion of the Ted Stofle Classic two weeks ago, it's not likely that Phil Vaughn or Dexter Long had their names appear on the top of the list. Long was coming off a career best second place finish in the race a week prior, but Vaughn's best Merced effort was a third place feature finish in 2015. However, these two drivers were a match for the race's 2015 champion and current point leader Michael Shearer.

Vaughn drove a patient race and made the move around Long to get the victory. Long once again settled for a second place finish, but it seems just a matter of time before the #911 car grabs a victory. Last season, there were a multitude of feature winners in this class, and we have four different winners in four races so far. Michael Shearer and two time Watsonville champion Terry Campion are also feature winners this year. Four time champion Raul Rodriguez Sr. is a feature winner as well.

Austin Van Hoff has had a rough start this year, but the 2015 Chowchilla Speedway point runner up is getting things dialed in quickly. Van Hoff should be there this week along with fellow Chowchilla resident Kodie Dean, hard charger Kristie Shearer, Cody Parker, Robbie Loquaci and George Silva.

Chris Corder has won all of the Mini Stock division races this season, and he's done it in two different cars. Corder seems to have a good hold on the Winner's Circle, and that makes him the driver everybody is gunning for this week. The 2014 Merced Speedway champion and 2015 Chowchilla Speedway champion is up to the challenge.

When her own ride wasn't ready, Joy Alger jumped behind the wheel of one of the Corder cars and finished a strong third last time out. Joy could be a driver to watch in the battle for victory this week. Two of the drivers who we thought could be contenders this year, Kevin Lockerby and Dennis Copus, are both out. Copus totaled his car in a crash the last time, and Lockerby has sold his car.

We're looking at two of the drivers that we tabbed to be contenders this year, teammates Mike Germait and James Stockton, to be threats to win in the weeks ahead. Paul Lauretti has a top three finish this year and could be another one to watch. Corder's sister and past runner up in this class, Jennifer Corder, has a car for a return to this division. "Rookie Of The Year" contender Destiny Carter should be there as well.

When we talk about the Sportsman division, the real question right now is who is going to come out and race? It was anticipated that a half a dozen cars would be there for the opener, but only three drivers bothered to show up. One of them, the #23 car driven by Tim Prothero, broke a clutch in the heat race. Division booster Kenny Birdsong and Jeff Bristow, who won the Main Event that night, should be there this week. But, who will be there to race with them?

It seems likely that the drivers on that list could include 2015 champion Marcus Lung, 2015 feature winner Eric Seeley and Mike Palmberg. Late word is that the gorgeous race car of two time Sportsman champion Mike Friesen may be there. We can only hope that the drivers will get behind this class and keep it going. It will be interesting to see who arrives this week.

In the meantime, the IMCA Sport Modifieds will headline the show along with Hobby Stocks, Mini Stocks and the Sportsman division. For further information, check out the track's official website at www.racemerced.com.

Hardtops Set For Chico Silver Dollar Speedway Race

The California Hardtop Association is set for their third dirt track appearance of the season, and it will happen Friday night at Chico Silver Dollar Speedway.  What is interesting is that the star of the moment is second year racer Jason Clifford.  Clifford is piloting the black #4 car that Steve Lemley competed in at Sunset Speedway previously, and he's doing a great job so far.

In a somewhat brutal visit to Placerville, Jason kept out of trouble and held off Placerville veteran Dennis Armstrong to grab the victory.  He was put to the test at Antioch at the end of April.  Despite starting back in the fifth row, Jason worked his way to the front, took the lead from Armstrong and set sail for his second victory.

It's not unrealistic to say that Clifford is the driver to beat this week, and he has a group of drivers hoping that they will be the ones to do it.  Leading the charge will be D. Armstrong, who now has back to back runner up finishes.  There is also the winner of last year's Chico appearance, Rob Waldrop.  Waldrop had a rather forgettable showng at Placerville.

There's also the steady John Philbert, who is coming off of a Top 5 run at Antioch.  Ron Ruiz also had a good effort at Antioch, winning his heat race in addition to a Top 5 finish.  Any one of these drivers could be the one to get the win this week.  There's also Jason's proud father, Ken "The Ice Man" Clifford.

The roster of Hardtops at this point actually reaches into the 20's, and among the drivers who could show on Friday night is Dave Mackey, Joe Hopp, Russ Kraft, John Turner and the always fast Tommy Thomson and Jason Armstrong.  The Hardtops will run this race and end the month with another dirt track race at Antioch Speedway on May 28.  Watching these race cars gives the fans a glimpse at what the cars were like at now closed race tracks such as Vallejo Speedway and Contra Costa Speedway.

Sprint Cars Highlight Five Division Program
At Antioch Speedway
The the 2016 season is in high gear at Antioch Speedway. The racing community is on a high  following last week's six division event. People are saying that was the best race yet this season, and they follow it up with a program that will be headlined by the Sprint Cars this week. In addition to the Winged 360 Sprint Cars and Wingless Spec Sprints, divisions featured on Saturday night will include the B Modifieds, Limited Late Models and Hobby Stocks.

Bragging rights in the Winged Sprint Cars have been earned by Art McCarthy and Billy Aton. Aton followed up on his third place finish in the season opener with an impressive feature win last time out. As the track continues to establish this division, surprise entrants show up just about every week. The most recent race was no exception as young guns, Giovanni's Scelzi and Koen Shaw finished second and third, respectively.

Aton has been absent from the speedway for the past few years, but the past Wingless Spec Sprint champion was a Main Event winner back in 2011 in the winged class. Aton's return means that he could be the driver to seriously challenge the veteran McCarthy for this season's championship.

McCarthy and 2015 champion Shawn Arriaga were heat race winners in the most recent event, and they battled for fourth in that Main Event with Arriaga edging McCarthy. Coming off of back to back Top 3 point seasons, the past Antioch Speedway Winged Sprint Car champion McCarthy is hoping to get his second track championship at the speedway this year.

2014 Titlist Chris Magoon made many young fans happy in the most recent race as he handed out autographed photos and candy in front the grandstands during intermission. It's been nearly two years since he won a Main Event, and he'd like to get one this week. Fellow Top 5 ranked ranked racer Dan Gonderman, Rick Brophy, Ricky Brophy, Adam McCarthy and Fred Arriaga are among the other drivers we're anticipating this week.

When the Wingless Spec Sprint division was established at Antioch Speedway in 1999, Rick Panfili was among those on the roster. Panfili has never won a Main Event in this division and has ranked third in the points these past two seasons. Following his second and fourth place finishes, Panfili finds himself ranked second in the point standings, just two points behind Jim Perry Jr. and in front of season opening feature winner Dan Gonderman. Panfili is hungry for victory, and he seems poised to get one on any given week.

After winning "Rookie Of The Year" honors and ranking second in the standings last year, Marcus Smith landed the ride driving for Richard Basden this season. His first start at Marysville earlier this year resulted in him flipping the car.  That was followed by a blown motor. However, Marcus has continued to come back, and his perseverance was rewarded last week with an impressive Main Event win. Interesting enough, the car that Marcus was building to run this year, driven by Dan Gonderman, won the season opening Main Event. Smith is trying to make up for lost time and is climbing the point ladder quickly.

While Smith picked up his first win in the division last week, Alan Miranda was hoping to do it and ended up with a career best second. The protégé of past Spec Sprint champion Gary Nelson Jr. seems poised to win one at any time. A field in the mid teens competed last time out, and it's anticipated that it will be pretty much the same this week with rookie Adam Teves, James East, father-son champions Jim Perry Jr. and Jimmy Perry III, Roy Fisher and defending champion Kyle Bakkie among the others we're looking for this week.

The B Modified division continues to be a wide open race. In the most recent event, Trevor Clemens finally grabbed his first win of the season. Because the division is booked just about every week this season, car count has been a bit strained. However, Al Johnson has persevered and is at the top of the point list. Being a leader isn't enough for Johnson, who is hoping for his first career feature win. Johnson matched his career best effort with another second second place finish last week. Could this be the week he finally wins?

Another driver making great strides this season is Shane DeVolder. DeVolder earned a career best second place feature finish recently, and was 4th last week after winning his first career heat race. His father, Dean DeVolder, is a Street Stock champion at Petaluma.

Speaking of family racers, Randy Brown has joined the ranks of the B Mod racers this year. The brother of veteran Ron Brown, Randy began racing at Antioch Speedway in the late 1970's in a Street Stock. He also did some Late Model racing in the early 1980's. Brown is working out the bugs in his new car and made his second start last week. Meanwhile, brother Ron had a solid third place finish ahead of Danny Jones last week.

You really never know who will show up on any given week for B Mod racing at Antioch, but drivers who could be there include 2015 Champion Fred Ryland, Patty Ryland, K.C. Keller, Chuck Golden and Tim Hammett.

Larry Damitz keeps right on going at Antioch Speedway. With the Limited Late Models off last week, Larry ran his Modified Hardtop to a feature win. The winner of the season opening Main Events sits atop the point ladder ahead of "Rookie Of The Year" hopeful Kimo Oreta.

When last we saw the Limited Late Model division, the division's All Time Main Event win leader and two time champion Mike Gustafson picked up the featured victory. Lori Brown was working on another top three finish when mechanical issues hit. Another driver who has had his share of troubles this year is Mark Garner. Garner will be out to try and turn things around this week.

White Damitz, Oreta and Garner are in the championship battle, Jim Freethy is another one trying to shake off the mechanical gremlins. The last time out, his car caught fire. It seems likely that if Freethy can keep things together, he'll get a Main Event win this year. Other drivers we'll be watching for include John Keith, John Evans and Eric Berendsen. Evans is hoping for good things after purchasing the car of 2014-2015 point runner up Mike Hynes. The cars of Calvin Lewis, Chris Long and Jim Robbins are among the ones we could be seeing at some point this year.

The Hobby Stock division has remained a wide open affair. After four races, we have four different Main Event winners. Last time out, Kimo Oreta took advantage of an off night for the Limited Late models to bring his Hobby Stock out to the track. He was rewarded with the Main Event victory. Rookie Guy Ahlwardt is one of the feature winners this year, and he finished a strong second last time out. Ahlwardt's success so far this year has him leading the point standings ahead of surprising fellow rookie Lindsey Buirch.

Cameron Swank has a pretty fast car and has heat race success this year. However, his best effort in the Main Event last week, a third, gives him hope that a Main Event win could be just around the corner. He held off another of this season's feature winners, Chris Sorensen, for that finish. Natalie Perry maintained her Top 5 point effort with a fifth place finish.  Back in seventh was the season debut of the #88 car of Kevin Taylor. We hadn't heard confirmation, but we believe he could be related to past Street Stock driver and feature winner in that class, Chuck Taylor.

There are several competitive cars in this class, and we believe there will be more new feature winners to come. Some of the drivers we're looking for this week include Calvin Louis Jr., Steven Rogers, past champion Dan McCown, Jordan Swank and Michael Cooper.

To recap, Winged Sprint Cars, Wingless Spec Sprints, B Modifieds, Limited Late Models and Hobby Stocks will make this a five division show that you will want to see. For further information, go to the track's official website at www.antiochspeedway.com.

Merced Speedway Heads Into May With A Five Division Show

One of the best shows in the state of California right now is happening at Merced Speedway every Saturday night. The track had big success with the annual Ted Stofle classic last week. The show hits the month of May with an exciting four division program featuring IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sport Modifieds, Hobby Stocks and Mini Stocks.

Records will show that after four events in the IMCA Modifieds, there are four different feature winners. The hot driver at the moment is Bill Egleston. The 2012 Champion is coming off of a second place finish in the Ted Stofle Classic, which is his second runner up finish this season. He is also a Main Event winner and sits atop the point leader board at the moment.

It's likely that there will be other feature winners this year, and one who seems poised to be the next one is rookie Bruce "Bubba" Nelson. Nelson drove a solid race last time out and was rewarded with a strong third place finish. Considering he is a two time Hobby Stock champion and won features in that division and the IMCA Sport Modifieds last year, it's not a question of if but when he wins in the IMCA Modified division

Late Model veteran Derek Nance finally made his debut in the division last week with a fourth place finish. The more he races, the more likely it will be that he gets a win. Another driver you should be watching in the battle for victory is Ramie Stone. Though the multi time IMCA Modified champion has struggled a bit this year, it's only a matter of time before he gets it dialed in and scores a victory.

Other drivers that we'll be watching for this week include three time Street Stock champion Ricky Thatcher, Harley Turner, Tim Etchison III, season opening feature winner Paul Stone, feature winner Jeff Streeter and Randy Brown.

In the IMCA Sport Modifieds, there have been three different feature winners. Two of those winners, Rick Diaz and Steve Stone, are locked in a close battle for the point lead. Last time out, neither of these drivers grabbed a podium finish.  It was Bakersfield racer Nick Spainhoward collecting the big trophy and the $600 prize in the Ted Stofle Classic. Third place was the guy behind the wheel of the George Medeiros owned blue #07 car, Mike Drake. It was Drake's second top three finish of the year. He seems likely to be a Main Event winner at some point this year.

Chowchilla resident Tim Elias made his best showing of the year last week as he grabbed a fifth place finish ahead of a season best sixth for Danny Roe. Another driver with multiple top five finishes, Gary Tucker, is one we suspect will most likely be getting a win this year.

The IMCA Sport Modified division is stacked with talent, and other drivers we're watching for this week include Chris Falkenberg, 2015 champion Josh Hensley, Dwayne Short, Nick Tucker, Chase Thomas and Andy Welch.

Perhaps the surprise of the night in the Ted Stofle Classic was the winner of the Hobby Stock portion of the event. The two drivers battling for the win at the end were Phil Vaughn and Dexter Long. Long was coming off a best career finish in second the week before, and he was racing hard to get his first career win. However, that honor fell to past top ten Chowchilla point runner Vaughn. Vaughn's previous best feature finish at Merced was a third place last year, and he was ecstatic that his first win came in one of the biggest events of the year.

Though season opening feature winner Michael Shearer had to settle for third, it was enough to keep him in charge of the point standings after four events. Michael and his wife Kristie Shearer remain front runners in this division this year with Long a surprise second in front of Kristie. Another driver who has not failed to get a top five finish in his three starts was last week's fourth place finisher Andrew Krumm. The two time division champion could strike for victory at any time.

The Hobby Stock division is filled with talent from front to back, and other drivers we're looking for in the battle for victory include Austin Van Hoff, Kodie Dean, Garrett Corn, John Hensley, Darren Miguel and Cody Parker.

At this point, Mini Stock point leader Chris Corder doesn't seem like he wants to share in the victory experience. The 2014 champion has been the dominant force in the division so far. He enters this week as the man to beat, but there are some drivers poised to knock him off of his perch.

Among the drivers to watch for this week include teammates Mike Germait and James Stockton. Germait has had top three Main Event success this year and is poised to get his first career win. Two of the biggest contenders for victory are both out of the action. Past Mini Truck champion Kevin Lockerby sold his car recently, and Dennis Copus saw his new car get totaled in a crash last time out.

On the heels of her strong third place finish last time out, Joy Alger is hoping to grab her first Main Event win. Robert Jackson could have been another driver to watch as well as Steven Johnson and Paul Lauretti.  However, we just got word that the Jackson car has been purchased by 2014 point runner up Jennifer Corder. There is also rookie Destiny Carter, who is hoping to cross another milestone off of her list and grab a top five feature finish or a heat race win.

As legendary announcer Johnny Sass would say, action will be the attraction at Merced Speedway this Saturday night with IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sport Modifieds, Hobby Stocks and Mini Stocks. For further information, check out the track's official website at www.racemerced.com.

Jason Clifford Collects CHA Hardtop Victory At Antioch,
Next Stop All American Speedway

The California Hardtop Association made their inaugural visit to Antioch Speedway Saturday night and brought a nice field of ten cars for the show.  On the heels of his first ever victory in Placerville a  few weeks ago, Jason Clifford made a charge through the pack to collect his second straight win.

J. Clifford was stuck back in last starting for the feature, and he began his charge through the pack.  Clifford made a move around the outside of Dennis Armstrong for the lead and went to to victory from there.  Clifford is running the car once driven by Oregon hard charger Steve Lemley.  Lemley actually won the first two Hardtop races of the "Modern Era" st Sacramento and Orland in 2002.  Clifford only began his racing career in Hardtops last year and has become the breakout star of the group so far this season.   Armstrong brought it home to his second straight second place finish ahead of the six cylinder Hardtop of Dan Williams.  John Philbert and Rick Ruiz rounded out the Top 5.

The Clifford's had a 1-2 finish in their heat race with Jason leading his father Ken. Rick Ruiz won the second heat race ahead of Armstrong.   Dave Mackey, John Turner, Russ Kraft and Ken Clifford completed the Main Event finishing order. The Modified Hardtop of Larry Damitz was the only car of that particular classification.  Joe Hopp ran his heat race, but a battery problem sidelined him for the Main Event.  All in all, it was a nice turnout, and the Hardtops return to Antioch on May 21.

The next dirt race is set for Friday, May 13 at Chico Silver Dollar Speedway.  This Saturday, it's a return to the pavement at All American Speedway in Roseville.  Among the drivers planning to be in  Roseville are Ken and Jason Clifford, John Philbert and Joe Hopp as there could be at least four to eight cars for that race.

Aton, McCarthy Lead Winged Sprint Cars
To Antioch Speedway

Antioch , CA...May 2...The Winged 360 Sprint Car division returns to Antioch Speedway on Saturday night for some more exciting action. This popular division is making its third of fifteen scheduled appearances on the fast 3/8's mile clay oval, prepared by John M. Soares.

The last time out on April 23rd, it was past Antioch Wingless Spec Sprint champion Billy Aton picking up an impressive Main Event win. Aton was challenged by young gun Giovanni Scelzi.  It was only Giovanni's first start at the speedway.

The fact is, the growing Sprint Car show at Antioch Speedway is the perfect opportunity for the younger drivers to get some valuable seat time in racing conditions. Finishing third was Koen Shaw, another past Outlaw Kart star. Shaw is also a front runner in Sprint Car racing at Ocean Speedway.

The win was a perfect opportunity for Aton to show that he is indeed a championship contender this year. Aton grabbed his first Main Event win in the Winged Sprint Car class at Antioch back in 2011. Art McCarthy, who is coming off of back to back Top 3 rankings in the division, is the current point leader.

McCarthy battled defending champion Shawn Arriaga before trailing him for a fifth place finish. The fact is, McCarthy has more seat time in the Sprint Car division than anybody else currently competing at Antioch Speedway. He is a past Antioch and Petaluma Speedway champion that has been running up in the front of the pack for decades. Last time out, Art was joined by his son Adam McCarthy in the division. Though Adam had his problems, he is a past Main Event winner and should not be counted out in future races.

2014 champion Chris Magoon had a Top 5 finish in the opener, but he struggled just a bit in the most recent race. The past Marysville Wingless Spec Sprint champion did what he did last year before the Main Event and handed out autographed photos and candy to the kids in front of the grandstands.

Open wheel veteran Burt Foland Jr. was also in the field last time out. Foland has logged many laps behind the wheel of a BCRA Midget and a Sprint Car. Seat time is something that 2015 "Rookie Of The Year"  Ricky Brophy would like to have. Brophy joined his father Rick Brophy in the field last time out, but he struggled with mechanical issues all night long.

Likewise, Dan Gonderman had issues early on and had to scratch from his heat race. Dan showed marked improvement in his Winged Sprint Car last season as the fourth ranked competitor, but the two time Wingless Spec Sprint champion knows that he has a win within him.

Optimism is high that the Winged Sprint Car division will continue to grow at Antioch Speedway in the most ambitious schedule this division has ever had at the racetrack. Promoter John M. Soares remains committed to building this class. For further information on the Winged Sprint Cars, go to the official website at www.antiochspeedway.com.
