Late Models, Spec Sprints Headline Antioch Speedway Show

Antioch, CA...The action is heating up with the July weather at Antioch Speedway.  A wide open All Star Series Wingless Spec Sprint battle has four winners in four races.  They are back to see if they can make it five this week.  The high powered DIRTcar Late Models also take their turn along with B Modifieds, Hobby Stocks and Dwarf Cars.  It's going to be a great night of racing on the fast three-eight mile clay oval.

The 19th All Star Series Wingless Spec Sprint championship battle is still very much up in the air as the division is in the midst of a busy four race month.  After four races, 2014 Watsonville champion Bryan Grier, past Antioch and Chico champion Bob Newberry, past Chowchilla champion Brandon Burd and rookie Robert Floyd are the Main Event winners.  Alan Miranda is the point leader.  He's finished second in the last two races, but he's still in search of his first win.  Two of the drivers he was battling in points, Burd and Roy Fisher, skipped the most recent race to further shake up the standings.

Ten points out of the lead is a man who has been supporting Spec Sprint racing since it started at Antioch in 1999, Rick Panfili.  Rick is also in search of his first win.  His fourth place finish last week has kept him within striking distance of the lead.  Floyd is the driver who has everybody talking.  Driving the old Jimmy Lavell car, Robert was running second last week when he made a late move and snatched the victory away from Miranda.  Coupled with his heat race victory. Floyd earned enough points to move to within eight of Panfili and 18 of Miranda.

Because there is so much racing left to do, Grier, Burd and Shannon Newton can not be counted out of the championship battle.  After finishing third last week, Grier is only 22 points behind Floyd.  Just 24 points out of third is Burd, while Newton, who has a pair of third place finishes, is 28 points out.  The other thing about the Spec Sprints is there is no clear favorite to win.   Most of the drivers out there have a legitimate shot at winning, and other drivers to keep an eye on this week include Jeremy Newberry, James East, Jeff Lee and rookie Abigail Gonderman.

The DIRTcar Late Model point battle finds the familiar sight of Jeff Decker battling Richard Papenhausen for the lead.  Decker won his second Main Event last time out to stretch his advantage to six points ahead of Papenhausen.  Papenhausen got a bit of a surprise last time when Kimo Oreta held him off for a career best second place finish.  Oreta is racing for "Rookie Of The Year" honors this season, and he won his first heat race in this division last time as well.  A Top 5 point season in the Sun Drop Racing #03 car isn't out of the question for the three time Hobby Stock champion.

He trails Chester Kniss by 25 points in that battle for fifth, and he's poised to make his move this week as Kniss will not be racing.  However, Oreta isn't alone in the battle to take fifth from Kniss.  Ten points behind Kniss is Marysville competitor Joey Olschowka and 20 points back is 2016 "Rookie Of The Year" Mike Hynes.  Hynes had a fifth place finish in the opener, but his luck since then hasn't been good.  The Olschowka family has been burning up the racing scene in Northern California for years, and Joey is enjoying the Late Model competition in Antioch.  He'll be hoping to get a Top 5 finish next time out.

Actually, Kniss is in a battle with David Newquist and Shawn DeForest for third in the standings.  These three are the top candidates in the "who other than Decker and Papenhausen might win a feature" category.  DeForest has a second place finish this season, while Newquist has a third and a fourth.  Kniss leads the three with three Top 5's in four starts with a season best third.  The way the points stack up, Newquist holds just a six point advantage over DeForest and an eight point lead over Kniss.   Other drivers to watch for this week include Dennis Souza and Rob Norris.

The last time the B Modifieds raced, K.C. Keller was earning his sixth straight podium finish in third.  With a win, three seconds and a third, Keller maintains a 16 point advantage over reigning champion Trevor Clymens.  Clymens has three wins so far, but he's flirting with a move up to the A Modified division.  Though he's in a B Modified, Trevor has been earning respectable finishes with the faster division.  The championship battle appears to be between these two at the moment, but Chuck Golden still lurks within 34 points of the lead.  Golden was fourth last time out as he has one second among his five Top 5 finishes so far this season.  Golden is on the verge of his first win.

Golden can't get too comfortable in third.  Following his fifth place finish last time, Mark Garner is only 16 points behind him.  Randy Brown is 28 points back in fifth and hoping to improve on his season best fourth place finish.  Randy is also a multi time heat race winner this year.  Last time out, it was past Street Stock champion Todd Gomez winning his second Main Event of the season.  Gomez has raced Hobby Stocks, Street Stocks and Limited Late Models at the track, but he's in his rookie season in the B Modified division.  Since he's raced elsewhere, Todd is not in the point battle at Antioch, but he's certainly a threat to win when he's there.  Doff Cooksey may be back to see if he can improve on his second place finish from last time, and other racers to watch for include, Kevin Brown, Megan Ponciano and Mike Mates.

Last week, Hobby Stock point leader Chris Long came back to earth just a little bit as he DNF'ed the Main Event.  The good news for the driver with three wins and eight Top 3 finishes was that attrition was such that he still ended up ninth at the finish.  The bad news is that two time winner Brent Curran used a second place finish that night to move to within 24 points of the lead.  Curran is already leading the rookie battle by a good margin, but he's also very much in the championship hunt.  He hasn't won since the third point event of the season, and the talented second generation racer is looking to change that this week.

A win is very much on the radar of rookie Chris Bennett.  While some of the drivers near the top of the points are having their ups and downs, Bennett has been getting the Bob Hansen Tribute Car to the finish line consistently.  His fourth place finish last week was his best finish yet, and it keeps him 19 points ahead of Cameron Swank in the battle for third.  Bennett might need some breaks to go his way to catch Curran, who is 62 points ahead of him, but you never know what can happen between now and the end of the season.  Swank, meanwhile, has finished as high as second and is also a threat to get his first win.  Following more transmission woes last week, two time feature winner and 2010 champion Chris Sorensen is 16 points behind Swank in the race for fifth.

The Hobby Stocks have been bringing the car count, and they could see some B Mains this season if this trend continues.  Last time out, Robert Niven had his orange #69 car up near the front of the pack with an impressive third place finish.  This follows the second place effort he had at the previous race.  When you speak of who could win a Main Event next, you have to include Niven.  In the history of the Hobby Stock division, the husband and wife team of Brad and Melissa Myers has combined for over two dozen wins.  Melissa returned last week and added another win to her totals.  She is a two time Hobby Stock and one time Street Stock champion with 18 wins in the various classes in which she has competed through the years.  Whenever she races, you know she's a threat to win.  Other drivers to watch for this week include Jordan Swank, Frank Furtado, Lindsey Buirch, Russell Shearer, Billy Garner and two time Super Hobby Stock champion Gene Haney.

Dwarf Car racing is generally pretty exciting and is anything but boring.  Last week, there were two rollovers in one heat.  The controversial heat saw the end of the night for incoming point leader Mike Corsaro and Chris Becker and a black flag for eventual Main Event winner Danny Wagner.  It was a big hit to the point lead of Corsaro, who has one win, three seconds and a third this season.  With only five show up points added to Corsaro's totals, his lead shrank to just 17 points over his teammate and longtime Dwarf Car competitor Charlie Correia.  It's been a while since Charlie has won a Main Event, but he will need a win to improve on his championship chances.

David Michael Rosa is knocking on the door to that victory.  After his second runnerup finish in a row last week, Rosa is just four points behind Correia and 21 behind Corsaro.  Devan Kammermann is also in the hunt as the rookie trails Corsaro by 31 points.  This year is definitely a wide open battle in the Dwarf Car division, and other drivers to watch in the battle for wins are two time Street Stock champion David Rosa, Brandon Anderson, Chuck Conover and Brian Gray.  Anderson is coming off of back to back third place finishes, and Conover has three Top 3 finishes so far.

Saturday night's five division show at Antioch Speedway should provide plenty of excitement for the fans.  For further information, go to www.antiochspeedway.com.

IMCA Sport Modifieds, Hobby Stocks Back in Action
At Merced Speedway

Merced, CA...The IMCA Sport Modifieds are in the middle of another great season of racing at Merced Speedway.  Saturday night marks their ninth race of the season.  Joining them this week will be the Hobby Stocks, California Sharp Mini Late Models and the Valley Sportsman division.

Five drivers have won IMCA Sport Modified Main Events so far this year, but there are some good drivers knocking on the door to their first wins.  Third ranked Jeremy Hoff has won at the speedway in previous seasons, and he was fifth in the big Timmy Post Memorial Race.  Hoff is still within 14 points of second place Rick Diaz, who has won the lion's share of the races so far.  Diaz has four wins.  The only repeat winner so far this year trails the consistent one time winner Fred Ryland by 35 points as he has missed a race this season.

Another driver looking for his first win of the season is Tim Elias.  Tim is only six points behind Hoff, and he's also had some Top 5 success this year.  The Thomas brothers, Chase and Tanner, are fifth and sixth, respectively, in points.  Earlier this year, Tanner had an impressive run in third and looked like he might win that race.  Brother Chase was a feature winner last year, and either one of them could win soon, perhaps even this Saturday night.  Getting a win at Merced Speedway is certainly an achievement this year as the track has one of the most competitive Sport Mod shows anywhere in the state.  Other drivers to watch for this week include Chuck Weir, Paul Espino, Cody Parker and T.J. Etchison.  Etchison, Weir and State point leader Shane DeVolder are also Main Event winners this year.

Hobby Stock racing at Merced Speedway has a similar storyline as they enter their ninth race of the season.  Several fast racers are looking to visit the winner's circle this year.  It's actually a bit surprising that past Chowchilla Mini Stock champion Robbie Loquaci hasn't won yet this year.  He's been fast, and one night earlier this season saw him running in contention when his engine caught fire.   Despite a bit of bad luck, Loquaci is three points behind three time winner Garrett Corn in the race for second.  Robbie is also 40 points out of the lead, which is currently held by three time winner Kodie Dean.

Austin Van Hoff has won Main Events at Merced in the past, but he's been shut out so far this year.  As with Loquaci, who he trails by 14 points, Van Hoff could be a winner on any given week.  Saturday could be the night for past point runnerup Kristie Shearer.  Kristie was a three time winner in 2015, but that win has eluded her so far this season.  Shearer's teammate, Shannon Nelson, one time winner and 2015 champion Kevin Joaquin, James Stockton, Mike Stockton, Darren Miguel and Tony Peffer are other drivers to watch for this week.  Last time out, two time champion Bruce "Bubba" Nelson won the Main Event, and he would certainly be a threat to win again if he races this week.

The Valley Sportsman division has been hurting just a bit for cars this year.  Last time out, we saw a pair of legends in the field as Watsonville Hall Of Famer Jerry Cecil and Johnny Brazil competed.  Jeff Bristow won the Main Event that night.  It's unknown who might be racing, but others who may be there include somebody in Kenny Birdsong's car, Eric Sealy, Shannon Fry and two time champion Mike Friesen.  This is the final tuneup race for this division before Legend's Night on August 12th.

The California Sharp Mini Late Models are getting their break in the state at Merced Speedway.  Michael Shearer is the car dealer, and he's fielding the first cars in this division.  Last week featured a good battle between eventual winner Tommy Bostic and Raul Rodriguez Jr., won by Bostic.  Tim Vaught and Riley Jeppesen are feature winners this year, and both are anticipated along with Tim Crews and Ian Shearer.  Ian got a chance to race against his father, Michael, and he held him off for a third place finish last week.  These cars get around the track petty well, and there is lots of potential for this division as car count grows.

With IMCA Sport Modifieds and Hobby Stocks back in action, this should be a great night of racing.  For further information, go to www.racemerced.com.

Pit Stops

The idea of Bay Area Hardtops at Antioch Speedway was an easy one.  This is the track that gave the modern era of the Northern California Hardtop effort their first Bay Area dates about a decade ago.  The movement itself was launched back in 2002 when Mike McCann, Chuck Prather and their group from Banks, Oregon made a weekend visit in September to Orland and Sacramento Raceway.  Interestingly enough, Steve Lemley won both races in a black #4 car that is now part of the Clifford Racing Team.  That particular car helped launch OTRO in Roseburg back in 1988.  Prather began running Sacramento and Roseville races for a couple of years before bringing his Hardtops to Coos Bay when be bought that track, but the Hardtop fire in California was ignited.

John M. Soares ran an occasional Hardtop race in the 1960s, and his father was a two time BCRA Hardtop champion and BCRA Hall Of Famer.  When he was approached by a few racers wanting dates, he opened his gates to them.  That early roster included Conrad Cavallero, twin brother Carmen Cavallero, Mike McClure, Tommy Thomson and Dan Williams.  The Cavallero brothers raced Stock Cars and Sportsman cars for years, and there was also a Vallejo Speedway connection early on.  Conrad fielded a replica car of the great Johnny Franklin, while McClure's car was a replica of Leroy Geving.

It gets even better.  Tommy Thomson was fielding the car that he actually ran at Vallejo Speedway and won races with in the 1970's.  He and another past Vallejo Speedway Hardtop racer, Terry DeCarlo Sr., shared the driving duties.  Dan Williams, a star of Mini Stock and Dwarf Car racing, like Tommy, is still a part of the Bay Area movement.  The California Hardtop Association has had it's changes through the years.  It's developed more of a Roseville-Placerville flavor to it as more drivers hail from that area, and it's still going strong.  As time has passed by, the drivers in the group have had a preference for racing up north with occasional visits to the Bay Area.

However, the Bay Area drivers want more dates locally, and Soares has been willing to give them those dates.  Dave Mackey is a Hardtop fanatic.  He fondly recalls watching the division compete at Vallejo Speedway and watching his heroes, such as Larry Damitz, Phil Pedlar and Gene Dudley.  Mackey's car is a replica of one of the Dudley cars.  He's gone so far as to buy a hauler and paint it the same colors as the Hardtop.  He enlisted Sprint Car ace Sparky Howard for that.  In fact, word is that Sparky may join the ranks of the Hardtop division in the next year or so.  Howard just recently won a Wingless Spec Sprint race at Petaluma.

Mackey was hearing from other racers who wanted to have more races in Antioch, so he began communicating with Soares on the matter.  He got five dates, but there was a problem.  The cars weren't ready.  Dave's #1 car was ready, and the #100 car driven by Larry Damitz in the past was also ready with Kimo Oreta now driving.  Thomson had heart surgery before the season.  Thankfully, he's on the road to recovery and slowly getting the #39 ready to go.  Doug Braudrick is still putting the finishing touches on a car that is a tribute to one of the cars owned by his father.  Ken Retzloff continues work on his #17 car, and Gene Haney is still putting a motor in the #37 car that he purchased from Bill McLaughlin prior to the season.  But, there is a Bay Area contingent of Hardtops and this includes cars owned by Williams, Steve Cloyes and Spenser Nice.

Really, the Bay Area Hardtop group is about strengthening the car base in the Bay Area in a way that the California Hardtop Association has done in the Sacramento-Placerville area with so many good racers like Jason Armstrong, Dennis Armstrong, Ken Clifford, Jason Clifford, Joe Shenefield, Joe Hopp, Russ Kraft, Ron Ruiz, Dan Whitney and John Turner.  It's encouraging drivers to come out and compete.  There are certainly discussions that will be had in the future, such as what should be considered a Hardtop, but keeping this movement going is what is really important.

There are some key dates coming up.  The California Hardtop group loves racing at Placerville Speedway, and there's a big date coming on July 22nd.  They also have the annual trek to Calistoga on Labor Day weekend.  The next date at Antioch is August 19th, but the big date is the Chet Thomson Memorial on September 9th.  This was a race that had its beginnings at Vallejo Speedway and honored the late Chet Thomson.  The past Hardtop champion is the father of Tommy Thomson.  Mackey and T. Thomson decided to bring this race back, and a 14 car field supported the first one last year.

It's all about preserving the heritage of a style of racing that was prevalent in the 1950's through the 1960's.  They ran these cars at Vallejo all the way to 1978.  The racers take a lot of pride in their cars and they way they are presented.  Mackey is very proud of his #1 car and he should be.  It's a show piece car.  The Braudrick car will be the same, and we hope to see it soon.  Seeing Thomson wheel the #39 car that he raced at Vallejo is a real treat.  Bay Area Hardtops live on.  Antioch Speedway has been a proud supporter of this revival since day one, and there are other division boosters.

Mikey Slaney, whose family goes back to the old Vallejo Speedway, stepped up to help support Hardtop racing at the most recent Antioch Speedway event.  Everybody who ran a sticker for his business, Extreme Scaffolding & Swing Stage Inc., received a $25 bonus to start.  Mikey didn't even make a big deal out of it.  He just casually announced it in a Bay Area Hardtops Facebook thread because he wanted to support the group.  Mackey won the most recent race, but that really wasn't what Dave was focused on.  He was happy that the six racers were there, and he was greatly appreciative of the support of the Armstrong team and Ron Ruiz for showing up.  J. Armstrong declined a ride in a Pure Stock at his home track in Placerville just because he committed to Antioch after the Petaluma race, which he won.

An era of cooperation when possible between both groups will be a good thing to the overall health of both groups.  Most of the competitors bring a good attitude to the race track, such as Ken Clifford.  Ken is constantly sharing videos of the races with everybody on Facebook and keeping the buzz going.  It's about having fun and giving the fans a show.  Having California Hardtops and Bay Area Hardtops is a good thing as it promotes one of the neatest types of race cars ever.  Here's to bigger and better things for Hardtops in the future.

We never did get confirmation as to what the purse was for Antioch Speedway's Jerry Hetrick Memorial A Modified race.  There was a rumor floating around a few days prior that the pay was $2,000 to win, and the fact that Bobby Hogge IV showed up to support the race would seem to confirm the purse was good.  Antioch had a DIRTcar Late Model race scheduled initially, but Promoter John M. Soares called his racers during the week to cancel.  It might not have been a bad idea to give the guys that extra week to regroup, but there was also a possibility that Hogge might have brought his Late Model to put on a show for the fans.  The good thing is that Antioch even has a Late Model show as this form of racing has seen its better days.

Hogge reached a milestone.  We couldn't tell you how many wins the third generation leadfoot has racked up through the years.  Championships aren't even on his radar these days.  Hogge is a bounty hunter, out to win the big purse money, and the competition knows they are in for a battle anytime that #2 car is there.  We do know that Bobby has won 70 Main Events between Late Models and A Modifieds at Antioch, and he's a three time Antioch champion.  The Hogge team may not even think about the impact they have at these race tracks or where their win totals at each race track rank among the others.  Bobby reached his 70th win at Antioch last week.  To put it into perspective, only three drivers have won at least 70.  The other two, J.D. Willis and Scott Busby, are tied at 72.  It seems likely that Hogge will eventually pass the other two, and the time frame in which this might happen is dependent upon when he chooses to come back.

The Hogge family is at the top of the list of families with Main Event wins at Antioch Speedway.  It's easy to forget just how good his father was when you watch Bobby race.  Bobby Hogge III could have continued to add to his win totals, but when Bobby IV turned 16, the elder Hogge stepped aside and became a crew chief.  To have the talent the younger Hogge has and the words of wisdom and expertise offered by his father and grandfather, he was starting out ahead of most rookies.  Big Bobby won 40 Late Model Main Events at Antioch alone along with two track championships there and a hard fought NASCAR Regional crown.  To watch Bobby III thread the needle on his way to the front, you knew you were in the presence of greatness.

The Main Event win lists in each regular division this year at Antioch have no less than three different names.  The Late Models and B Modifieds are both at three.  The other six classes have at least four different winners.  This means that as we are just past the halfway point of the season, there are over 30 different feature winners in the regular classes.  All of the divisions are pretty competitive, and that means you never know who might win from week to week.  The Late Model class might be the most difficult division for the regulars to get a win in, because it's usually two time champions Jeff Decker and Richard Papenhausen or somebody coming in for a visit.  Any regular who can beat these two will know that they earned it.

A Modifieds had a double digit win list last season, and they check in with five winners so far this year.  It's not surprising to see the names of Hogge, Busby (two), Nick DeCarlo (two) and Kellen Chadwick (two) on that list.  Chester Kniss is also a winner this year.  Hobby Stocks have two time winners in Chris Sorensen and Brent Curran as well as three time winner Chris Long.  Add Michael Cooper and two time champion Melissa Myers and you have five winners.  With 16-18 cars showing up each race, you have some good drivers still looking for their first win.  B Modifieds have three winners in point leader K.C. Keller, reigning champion Trevor Clymens (three) and Todd Gomez (two).  It will be interesting to see who might join them.  Mark Garner will be hoping he's next.  He's already on the Limited Late Model winner's list along with two time champion Mike Gustafson and reigning Petaluma champion Matt While.  Only two time winner Kimo Oreta is a multi time winner so far, while title hopeful Jim Freethy searches for his first.

The lure of a $1,200 payday has four different Winged 360 Sprint Car winners in five races.  There's two time winner Kyle Offill along with Dustin Golobic, Tyler Seavey and multi time Marysville champion Colby Wiesz.  Dwarf Cars now have five winners.  Two time champion Danny Wagner and Adam Teves check in with two each.  Reigning champion Kevin Miraglio, 2015 champion David Teves and point leader Mike Corsaro each have one.  There is a group of eager drivers closing in on their first win in this exciting class.

We remain very pleased to see Wingless Spec Sprints still hanging tough at Antioch Speedway in their 19th season.  This is the track at which it started, and there's been an effort in recent years to keep the costs down in order to encourage more support.  The division is in the midst of a four race month, and the four races so far have been won by Bryan Grier, Brandon Burd, Bob Newberry and rookie Robert Floyd.  The competition has been close this year, and there are some drivers hot on the trail of their first wins.  You have to watch out for division original Rick Panfili, Alan Miranda and Shannon Newton.  Their time in the winner's circle could come soon.

At Merced Speedway, there are a pair of races to go in July before the track comes up on a two week summer break.  IMCA Sport Modifieds and Hobby Stocks are racing this week along with California Sharp Mini Late Models and the Sportsman class.  The Sport Mods and Hobbys are back a week later along with IMCA Modifieds and a big double point Mini Stock race.  Merced can get pretty hot, and promoter Ed Parker had already picked out the last week of July to take a break.  He had a race on the first week of August of 2016, but he was asked by racers if he could cancel so that they could support the Mike Cecil Memorial race in Watsonville.  Watsonville is normally a Friday night venue, but they run this big race on Saturday.  Rather than compete with the other track, Parker went dark last year and will do so again this year.  He's also going dark later this year to allow racers to support the Pat Pettit Memorial Shoot Out in Watsonville.

It's been 20 years since we lost Mike Cecil.  Cecil was the son of Watsonville Speedway Hall Of Fame member (yes, they have one) Jerry Cecil.  Mike was one of the top Street Stock racers and a winner of the big 100 lap race.  He loved running the big long distance race, so when he died, this race was dedicated to him.  It ran as a 100 lapper for over a decade.  The Cecil family has worked to make this a big night at the track, and American Stocks are featured as this is the closest class to what Mike raced.  IMCA Modifieds and Sport Modifieds are also on the card, and they all run for more money.  The IMCA Modified race is also a big All Star Series race.  The Cecil's are working on bringing in fan giveaways, contingency prizes for the racers and all of that.  Ryland Racing is raffling off a chassis, and proceeds go to the race.  The Mike Cecil Memorial happens at Watsonville on August 5th.  This one will be the biggest one yet.

While we're on the subject of special big races, there's also the Sixth Annual Johnny Soares Classic at Petaluma Speedway on August 12th.  The featured division is the Wingless Spec Sprints, and it happens to be the third race of the PitStopUSA.com Shoot Out Series and a C&H Hunt Series race as well.  Winning the race named after the legendary long time Petaluma promoter will be a career highlight.  As if that's not enough, an All Star Series IMCA Modified race is also on the schedule along with Lumberjacks Restaurant Super Stocks and Jake's Performance Hobbies Mini Stocks.

When Merced comes back on August 12th, it will be Legend's Night.  Since Doug Williams brought this event to the schedule in 2014, it's been very important.  It's gotten bigger each year.  Last year saw the inclusion of a Legend's Breakfast the Friday morning before race day.  All accounts were that this was a big success, and hints were given that a Hall Of Fame might begin in the future.  No official announcement has been made in that regard.  Last year they honored Jerry Holzer as the legend that he is, and it was hinted at that we could refer to people like Dennis Moomjean, Vern Willhoite, Ted Stofle and George Steitz as future Hall Of Famers.  It's this writer's hope that the future is this year for these four deserving racers, and you can add he voice of Merced Speedway, Johnny Sass, while you're at it.

The Sportsman division becomes a featured class on Legend's Night.  Car count has struggled for the class that was brought back by long time Merced Promoter and future Hall Of Famer Chuck Griffin.  The year was 1999, and the class has held at least one race at the track each year since.  Jeff Bristow and Kenny Birdsong have had their cars at the track this year.  It's been a difficult year for reigning champion Birdsong with what he's going through with his health, but we all send our thoughts and prayers to him.  Kenny is still sending his Rod Poor Tribute Car to the track, and we expect that will probably be the case again for this race.  We anticipate a big turnout for the class as past champions Mike Friesen and Mark Odgers, Shannon Fry, Jeff West and Eric Sealy should be among the other drivers there.  Traditionally, legends get behind the wheel of these cars and drive a couple of laps before parking on the front stretch to be interviewed by the announcer.

Legend's Night is just one of the special night's still planned for Merced Speedway this year.  Also on the schedule on September 23rd is a race that long time Merced competitors will not want to miss.  It's the Matt Von Hoecke Race For A Cure Fundraiser.  Matt's business, Matt & Glass, was where the racers went to get their parts, their fuel and their race car bodies.  He was a long time supporter of the race track.  As a side note, he's the one who made it possible for this writer to start announcing at Merced Speedway with Johnny Sass.  When he died, the community mourned.  Racers still proudly run a Matt & Glass sticker on their cars to this day.  IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sport Modifieds and a double point race for Hobby Stocks are all on the schedule that night.

Merced Speedway will close the season on October 7th with one of the biggest Sport Modified races anywhere on the West Coast, the Second Annual John Fore Jr. Memorial Race.  Bob Smith Truck Repair is sponsoring the night.  Smith sponsored some amazing trophies for the Timmy Post Memorial Race on July 1st this year as he had done last year.  In addition to the Sport Mods, this race will also feature Hobby Stocks and draw a curtain on what has been a great 68th season of racing at Merced Speedway.

It's a whole crew of people who make racing so special at Merced Speedway, but at the top is Promoter Ed Parker.  Parker has continued the push started by Doug Williams, who is still Race Director, to honor the great tradition and heritage of this race track.  These special nights of racing make the Merced County Fairgrounds racing facility a destination place for fans and drivers, and Parker is constantly looking at ways to make things better and keep it going strong.

In a final note, the Alameda County Fairgrounds Rodeo Arena roared with the sound of car motors last week.  This included six four cylinder motors as Mini Stock racers towed all the way from Porterville to run the small track Figure 8 races there for three nights in a row.  Racers like the Schwartzenberger brothers, Andy Boydstun, Kit Murphy, Steven Scott and Chris Rutledge supported this event.  Races like this one and the big Agri-Race in the Salinas Rodeo Arena might make people wonder about the feasibility of a Rodeo Arena Figure 8 or Agri-Race (depending on arena size) tour of the various venues.  The fans received this third annual event pretty well, and there are several fairs, such as Los Banos, Sonora, Turlock, Mariposa, Woodland, Calaveras and others that could host similar events.

An enterprising promoter might start negotiating with fair managers about doing similar events.  Because of the size of the area, more than six cars becomes a bit crowded, meaning you have the beginnings of a show at six cars.  A group of 12 or so willing competitors could headline an event, and if you had drivers who came to race in the spirit of what this is, it could become a regular added attraction for the fair.  There's always money budgeted for such entertainment.  The trick is negotiating and finding out what you can get from fair management to make it happen.  It's an interesting idea.  All it will take is the right person to come along and see what they can do.  There are racers willing to support such a show, and the Hornet/Mini Stock is the least expensive type of Stock Car to prepare.

Hogge Wins Hetrick Memorial, First Career Win For Floyd
At Antioch Speedway

Antioch, CA...July 8...Bobby Hogge IV scored the victory in the 25 lap Jerry Hetrick Memorial for the All Star Series A Modified division Saturday night at Antioch Speedway.  Bobby joined elite company as this was his 70th career win at Antioch.  Only J.D. Willis and Scott Busby have more Antioch wins as both have 72.  Hogge won his heat race earlier in the evening and shared the second row with previous winner Nick DeCarlo for the special race.  Incoming point leader Bobby Motts Jr. had mechanical problems early in the race and finished last in the 19 car field.  Later, Eric Berendsen rolled his car.  DeCarlo offered Hogge his biggest challenge, but not even he could stop Hogge by the time the checkered flag flew.  Multi time Petaluma Speedway champion Michael Paul Jr. finished third ahead of Busby and Trent Wentworth.

Rookie Robert Floyd scored a thrilling victory in the 20 lap Wingless Spec Sprint Main Event.  Floyd also won his heat race.  Bryan Grier led eight laps before spinning from the lead.  Alan Miranda had the lead from there in search of his first career victory.  Floyd began pressuring Miranda during the final few laps before charging by on the back stretch on lap 19 to take the lead.  Floyd scored the popular win in the car of the late Jimmy Lavell.  Miranda settled for second.  Grier charged back through the pack and made a late pass on Rick Panfili to finish third.  Heat race winner James East finished fifth.

Matt While grabbed the victory in the 20 lap Limited Late Model Main Event.  While is the reigning champion at Petaluma Speedway, and this was his first visit to Antioch.  While outran new point leader Kimo Oreta for his win.  Jim Freethy continued his streak of all Top 3 finishes so far this season as he held off Mark Garner and heat race winner Mike Gustafson for a third place finish.

Melissa Myers won the 20 lap Hobby Stock Main Event.  The two time division champion was making her first appearance of the season, and she battled Brent Curran for the impressive win.  Curran gained some ground on point leader Chris Long in the championship battle.  Long was black flagged for his bumper.  After getting that fixed, Long returned and lost a driveline on the track.  He was still scored ninth.  Robert Niven finished third in the 18 car field.  Chris Bennett came back from an early spin to beat Randy Metzler for fourth.

Danny Wagner picked up the win in the 20 lap Dwarf Car feature.  The two time champion managed to hold off David Michael Rosa, who settled for second for the second straight week.  Wagner's heat race produced two of the rollovers the track had for the night.  Point leader Mike Corsaro was the first victim, and Chris Becker rolled at the end of the race.  Both drivers were done for the night, which will impact the championship battle.  Brandon Anderson finished third, followed by Toby Brown and two time Street Stock champion David Rosa.

Dave Mackey won the 12 lap Bay Area Hardtop Main Event.  Mackey won the battle with heat race winner Kimo Oreta for the victory.  Ron Ruiz held off recent Chico winner Jason Armstrong to finish third.

All Star Series racing continues next Saturday as Wingless Spec Sprints return along with DIRTcar Late Models, B Modifieds, Hobby Stocks and Dwarf Cars.  For further information, go to www.antiochspeedway.com.

Combs, Boul, Corder Win Merced Speedway Features

Merced, CA...July 8...Josh Combs won the 25 lap IMCA Modified Main Event Saturday night at Merced Speedway.  Combs was making his second appearance of the season, and he won his eight lap heat race to get the night started.  Combs had a front row starting spot and bolted out to the lead ahead of Justin Villanueva and heat winner John MacDougall.  Combs pulled away from J. Villanueva as MacDougall was being challenged initially by Troy Stone.  Around lap 10, J. Villanueva spun in Turn 4 and kept going without a yellow flag.  Heat race winner Bill Egleston moved in to challenge MacDougall for second as Combs had built a huge lead.  A lap 16 caution flag changed the battle up front.  As Combs maintained his command, Egleston moved underneath MacDougall and drifted up exiting Turn 2.  This sent MacDougall spinning as several cars piled in.  MacDougall's impressive run up front ended as T. Stone restarted in the back.  Combs continued to lead Egleston on the next restart as Ryan Porter settled into third.  Egleston pushed high in Turns 1 and 2 on lap 21, allowing Porter and four time champion Ramie Stone to settle into second and third.  Nobody was going to beat Combs as he brought it home to a dominant victory.  Porter finished second ahead of R. Stone.  Mike Villanueva was fourth, but he gained little ground on point leader Randy Brown, who ended what was an eventful race for him in fifth.  D.J. Shannon, Bruce "Bubba" Nelson, Egleston, Jarod Fast and T. Stone rounded out the Top 10.

Tanner Boul won the 25 lap IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Main Event.  Boul started on the pole as Monty Ferriera made a charge from tenth starting.  Ferreira had won the previous three Main Events, and he was on the move to the front of the pack.  However, Boul ended Ferreira's bid for a fourth straight win as he held him off for his second win of the season.  Grant Duinkerken was a solid third ahead of Scott Meisner, heat race winner Chris Ennis, Doug Gandy, George Tristao, heat winner Vaughn Schott and final lead lap finisher Kyle Rasmussen.  Mauro Simone finished tenth.  Tristao was the incoming point leader, but Ferreira should have the lead when the next point list is released.

Jennifer Corder won her first 15 lap Mini Stock Main Event of the season.  Jennifer gained several points on her point leading brother Chris Corder, who fell out after the opening lap.  Heat race winners Jason Womack and Shawn DePriest settled into the first two positions at the start with J. Corder third.  The lead two actually had a good lead on J. Corder, and DePriest went underneath Womack in Turn 2 to grab the lead on lap four.  A lap later, both drivers pushed high in Turn 2 in traffic, allowing J. Corder to catch them both.  J. Corder beat Womack back to the line to take second.  When DePriest again went high in Turn 2 on lap six, J. Corder raced by for the lead.  Lucy Falkenberg moved up to battle Womack and DePriest for second as the trio went three wide on the back stretch on lap seven.  DePriest and Falkenberg both got by Womack.  A lap 11 caution flag would not slow J. Corder down as she scored the impressive win.  DePriest was a season best second ahead of Falkenberg, Womack, Jeremy Perry, Karina Peffer, Devin Bolton, Kristina Cole, Troy Tatum and C. Corder.

Tommy Bostic won the 15 lap California Sharp Mini Late Model Main Event.  Bostic has been competing at Merced for years in several classes.  Raul Rodriguez Jr. led three laps of the Main Event before Bostic raced by on the inside in Turn 4 to take the lead.  The lead two cars ran closely from then to the checkered flag with Bostic winning ahead of Rodriguez.  Young Ian Shearer held off his father, Michael Shearer, for the third place finish as heat race winner Tim Crews rounded out the finishing order.

The IMCA Sport Modifieds and Hobby Stocks return next Saturday night to headline the show along with the Valley Sportsman and Mini Late Model divisions.  For further information, go to www.racemerced.com.

Eliason, Daly Win Ocean Speedway Main Events

Watsonville, CA...July 7...Cory Eliason won the 30 lap Taco Bravo Sprint Car Main Event Friday night at Ocean Speedway.  Eliason isn't chasing points, but this was his third win in four starts and a nice tune up for next Friday night's Howard Kaeding Classic.  Eliason won the pole for the Main Event by holding off Cole Macedo to win the six lap Trophy Dash.  Tommy Tarlton Jr., Brad Furr and Kurt Nelson each won eight lap heat races as 20 cars were in action.  Eliason's feature win came ahead of fast timer (11.700) Michael "Buddy" Kofoid.   Tarlton finished a solid third followed by Mathew Moles, Macedo, Geoff Ensign, Furr, Kaleb Montgomery, Jason Chisum and Koen Shaw.

Late Model ace Clay Daly won the 25 lap IMCA Modified Main Event.  The class ran two eight lap heat races, and Todd Hermosillo barely held off Alex Wilson at the line to win the first heat race.  Past track Modified champion Jim Pettit II won his heat race ahead of title contender Nick DeCarlo.  A. Wilson, Cody Burke and DeCarlo are having a close championship battle this year, and that remained the case after Friday's race as Wilson's lead is just four points over the other two.  Daly had his hands full down the stretch with DeCarlo running with him, but he prevailed at the checkered flag.  Austin Burke held off Robert Marsh for third as Raymond Keldsen Jr. was a season best fifth.  C. Burke, Danny Wagner, Hermosillo, A. Wilson and Eli Zucker rounded out the Top 10.

Matt Hagio won the 20 lap IMCA Sport Modified Main Event.  It was the fifth win of the season for the 2015 champion, but he's playing catch up with point leader Mark Hartman after missing a race.  There were 16 competitors, but after holding off Hagio to win his eight lap heat race, State point leader Shane DeVolder was a Main Event scratch.  Hartman outran Andrew Peckham to win his heat race.  Hagio started back in sixth in the feature, but he found his way to the front and beat pavement racer Doff Cooksey for his latest victory.  Cooksey was coming off of a second place finish in his previous race at Antioch Speedway.  Sprint Car ace Geoff Ensign drove the Marty Burdine #79 car to a third place finish ahead of Merced Speedway star Tanner Thomas.  Recent Antioch Speedway winner Todd Gomez finished fifth, followed by Hartman, Justin McPherson, Billy Robertson, Duane Beiser and John Ferro.

Point leader Rob Gallaher won the 20 lap American Stock Main Event.  In the process, the reigning champion became the division's first repeat winner of the season.  Nick Silva opened the night by holding off J.C. Elrod to win his eight lap heat race, while Tony Oliveira outran past champion Wally Kennedy to win a heat race.  Gallaher started back in the the third row of the Main Event and moved up to battle Devon Sanders before racing to the victory.  Sanders was a close second, and Chris McCabe grabbed his first career podium finish in third.  Katie Briggs used a fourth place finish to move into second in the standings as Elise Gallaher, Oliveira, Kennedy, D.J. Keldsen, N. Silva and Vernon Silva completed the Top 10.

Logan Doglione won the 15 lap Mini Stock Main Event.  Doglione is part of the new Mini Stock movement at Lemore Raceway, and he was impressive all night.  It started when Dolglione beat Justin Richards in a photo finish for his eight lap heat race victory.  Doglione started mid pack in the feature and worked his way into the lead.  Once he got there, he beat fourth row starter Ryan Muller for the impressive victory.  Richards settled for third, followed by Kate Beardsley, Bill Beardsley, point leader Dakota Keldsen, Nicole Beardsley and Joey Burress.

This Friday and Saturday, it's the Howard Kaeding Classic, which pays tribute to the Super Modified legend of San Jose Speedway and the patriarch of the famous Kaeding racing family.  For further information, go to www.racepmg.com.

Racing Returns Saturday As Orland Raceway
Hits Mid Season Mark

Orland, CA...Saturday night marks the sixth event of the 12 race championship season at Orland Raceway, and the fans have been treated to some close battles all season long.  Last week featured double points for the Pure Stocks, Mini Stocks, Mini Trucks, Micro Sprints and Wingless Gas Sprints.  There were no changes at the top.  This week will feature all of the regular classes on the one-fifth mile dirt oval.  Things are looking up at the track this year as Promoter Rich Hood and his crew continue to improve on things from last season.  It's a work in progress, but things are certainly improving.

Pure Stock point leader Jeremy Langenderfer had the most to lose last time out.  With 12 cars on the track, Jeremy could certainly lose the point lead to Keith Ross, and Langenderfer's night was in doubt when spun from the lead on lap eight.  However, he steadily worked his way back to the front and had the lead before race race was over.  It was Ross who failed to finish, but reigning champion Steve Martin didn't do much better.  By the end of the night, Langenderfer's lead over Ross increased to 31 points as Martin was still holding third, 32 points behind Ross.  Brad Ray brought it home to a second place finish that night with Chris Barnett in third.  All of these hard chargers should be there this week along with fourth ranked Shannon Collins, Amanda Koop, John Camper and Cody Bundy.

Though his Pure Stock effort didn't go so well, Keith Ross is on fire in the Mini Truck division.  He won the double point race last time, but reigning champion Dan Webster kept the damage to a minimum with a strong second place finish.  Ross leads Webster by 24 points.  Ross has been so fast this year that he went to Hayfork Speedway last week and won the Main Event there.  Actually, if not for a yellow flag late in the recent double point race, "Rollin" Olin Crane surely would have won.  Crane led the race for 17 laps before a crash forced a yellow flag.  Ross took the lead on the restart, and Crane spun in the final turn trying to regain the lead.  These three should be there this week along with 2013 champion Ross Vige, William Fogle and Zachary Baker.  Fogle is still only 20 points behind Webster in the battle for second.

Tom Davis has been one of the fastest Mini Stock drivers in Northern California.  He has three wins in Orland and three in Susanville so far this year.  Though he didn't win on double point night, the fact that rival Sean Perry didn't finish allowed him to increase his lead to 15 points in the championship standings.  Donovan Chilton returned that night and led the final 15 laps to beat Davis for the victory.  Shasta Speedway racer Dustin Hills was back and finished third.  Perry is still second in the standings, just 12 points ahead of reigning champion John Kirkpatrick.  Most of these competitors should be there this week, along with Barbara Crane, Steven Speers and Seth Libbee.

Jackie Whitson Jr. won the double point race and is in command of the 250 Micro point lead as the only feature winner in five races.  Multi time NCMA Sprint Car champion Scott Holloway returned last time and made a late move around James Barnes for second.  This was Holloway's second visit to a track at which he won NCMA races at years ago, and he will be a threat to win if he keeps coming back.  Whitson remains the driver to beat, but past champion Jess Garland, Ronnie Heyer, Dave McKinnon Jr. and Russell Hensley are some of the drivers to watch in the battle to evict Whitson from the winner's circle.

The 600 Micro class has been struggling just a bit this year, but previous winner Tyler Rockwell, Colby Gregg, Maril Michelet, Kyra Michelet, Tony Alosi and Steve Harvey are a few drivers to look for this week.  Multi time Wingless Gas Sprint champion Josh Jacobo has been the star of the field in that division as he races with newer drivers.  John Irwin, Gregory Gotleib and Audrey Webb are other drivers to watch for as the track attempts to reestablish this form of Sprint Car racing on the program.

Saturday night will be a great night of racing in Orland.  Gates open at 5:00 PM with the first race at 7:00 PM.  General Admission is $8.00 with Seniors and Juniors (7-12) $5.00 and children 6 and under free.  For further information, look up Orland Raceway on Facebook of go to www.orlandraceway.org.

Jerry Hetrick Memorial Race
At Antioch Speedway Saturday Night

EDITOR'S NOTE:  As of Now, 12:30 PM Friday, the DIRTcar Late Models have been removed from the schedule for Saturday night.  This story was written based on the schedule originally posted.  Please disregard the Late Models on this date.  The next race date for DIRTcar Late Models at Antioch is listed as July 15.

Antioch, CA...The All Star Series A Modifieds are headlining the Jerry Hetrick Memorial Race this Saturday night.  The loaded seven division event, which is sponsored by Sizemore Construction, also includes Wingless Spec Sprints, Limited Late Models, Hobby Stocks, Dwarf Cars and Bay Area Hardtops.

Throughout the 1970's, Jerry Hetrick was one of the regulars in the old Sportsman division.  He was a consistent Top 20 point runner who had multiple Top 10 seasons and was fourth in 1975 and fifth in 1980.  At one time, he held the track qualifying record.  He did it all on a shoe strong budget.  Jerry was a true sportsman of the speedway, and when he won races, his fellow competitors were happy for him.  When he passed away, Promoter John M. Soares added this special race to the schedule last year.

Details on the purse were not made available at press time.  The A Modifieds are the closest division resembling the old winged Sportsman class in which Jerry competed, so they are the night's headliners.  It might seem easy to forget about Bobby Motts Jr. despite the fact that he is the point leader.  A past Street Stock champion at the track with over 20 wins in that division, Bobby ranked second in A Modified points in 2015.  On the strength of two seconds and two thirds, Motts carries a 41 point advantage over Mike Salazar into this race.  Since his motor problems on the last lap of the season opener cost him a sure victory, Salazar has had more mechanical problems, but his third and two fifths keeps him just three points ahead of second generation racer Sean O'Gara in the battle for second.

The son of former Vallejo Speedway Stock Car star John O'Gara, Sean has also had his ups and downs, but he has finished second and third once each this year.  Like Motts and Salazar, he's due to win.  Eric Berendsen was rebounding from motor problems of his own last week, but his fourth place finish last week kept him within 29 points of O'Gara for third.  Two time winner Scott Busby has managed to climb back into fifth in points after missing a race.  Busby finished a close second to Nick DeCarlo last week.  The two time Petaluma champion DeCarlo has won twice this year at Antioch, and he could be there with a few other Petaluma competitors as that track is dark to this division this week.  Other drivers to watch for this week include Anthony Slaney, Justin Yaeger, Trent Wentworth, Gary Hetrick and possibly two time champion Carl Berendsen II

We haven't seen the Wingless Spec Sprint division since the Contra Costa County Fair race in May, but we have three different winners.  2014 Watsonville champion Bryan Grier, past Antioch and Chico champion Bob Newberry and past Chowchilla champion Brandon Burd are the three winners.  Burd won the most recent race and denied Alan Miranda his first win in the process.  Miranda nearly won the opener before having to pit late.  Burd and Miranda are tied for the point lead, while Rick Panfili is just four points back in third.  Panfili has been racing in this class since it started in 1999, and he's in the hunt for his first career feature win.  He has a fourth and a fifth so far this season and won his heat race last time.

Ageless veteran Roy Fisher has won his share of races and is as tough as they come.  Fisher has finished as high as third this season to be just eight points out of the lead.  Fisher will certainly be a threat to win this week, as will Shannon Newton, who has a pair of third place finishes.  Rookie Robert Floyd has done a good job of staying out of trouble and getting to the checkered flag.  He finished fifth last time out and is still within 22 points of Burd for the lead.  These stars and others, such as Jeremy Newberry, Abigail Gonderman, James East and Jeff Lee should, make this an interesting show this week.

There is a good battle and the beginnings of a rivalry between Mark Garner and Kimo Oreta in the Limited Late Model division.  This goes back to last season when Garner lost second with mechanical problems in the finale, while Oreta won that race to clinch "Rookie Of The Year" honors and second in points.  Oreta was being mentored by five time division champion Larry Damitz, and he was chosen as the driver of Larry's Sun Drop Racing #15 car this season.  Oreta has certainly made Damitz proud with two wins and a second so far.  With a win, two seconds and a third, however, Garner holds a two point lead over Oreta.  Mark is determined to give his family their first Antioch Speedway championship, but if he gets it, Oreta is going to make him earn it.

While we talk about these two, however, you can't forget the only driver to force Damitz to settle for second in points in his last six years at the speedway, Jim Freethy.  Freethy has yet to get a win this year, but he's been consistent with one second and three thirds in his four starts.  Freethy is just 12 points out of the lead, and that win could come this week.  The division's all time win leader, Mike Gustafson, won the season opener, but he's struggled of late to fall 24 points out of the lead.  Others drivers anticipated this week include the steady John Evans, rookie Buddy Kniss, Jeff Kendrick, past champion Lori Brown and Chad Hammer.  Kendrick has three Top 5 finishes in his three starts.

After his win in the non point New Years Bash, Chris Long began making plans to make a run at his Hobby Stock first championship.  Through the years, he's pretty much been out there having fun on a shoe string budget.  Something has clicked for Long in the black #99 car this season.  Maybe it's the fact that he's riding with Uncle Bob every time he gets behind the wheel of the former Bob Ackerman car, but Chris has three wins and has yet to finish outside the Top 3 in his eight starts this year.  This has Long slowly pulling ahead of top rookie Brent Curran in points.  The two time winner Curran is coming off of back to back third place finishes, but he's trying to make up for his bad Week 5 effort.  There's sill another half of racing season to go.

After breaking his second transmission last week, two time winner Chris Sorensen fell 48 points behind Curran in the standings.  In fact, 2010 champion Sorensen finds himself in a battle to hold onto third as rookie Chris Bennett is eight points behind him and Cameron Swank is nine points back.  With two seconds and a third so far, C. Swank seems poised to get his first feature victory.  Cousin Jordan Swank has been gathering momentum as he comes off of back to back Top 5 finishes.  It was Robert Niven who had everybody talking last week after he won his heat race and followed that up with a career best second place feature finish in the 17 car field.  Could he get his first win this week?  He will be giving it a good effort, but with Billy Garner, Gene Haney, Frank Furtado, Ricky Foster, Michael Cooper and Anthony Vigna in the field, you have to battle to earn every position.

It's way too early to talk championship for Mike Corsaro in the Dwarf Car division, but he has certainly hit his stride.  The popular driver of the #00 car won his first race of the season last week to go with three seconds and a third.  Corsaro now has a 54 point lead over his teammate, Charlie "The Hammer" Correia.  Stalking Correia just six points behind is rookie Devan Kammermann.  Kammermann's fifth place finish last week was his third Top 5 of the season.  With Chris Becker and David Michael Rosa just ten points behind him, Kammermann knows he'll have to keep up the momentum to hold onto that podium position.

Chuck Conover added a fourth place finish and heat win last week to his three Top 3 finishes.  It's probably due to his absence from the third event of the season that Conover isn't in the championship hunt, but the long time Dwarf Car competitor is due to grab a feature victory.  The fact is there are several drivers capable of getting a win, and others to watch include two time Street Stock champion David Rosa, Brandon Anderson, reigning champion Kevin Miraglio and Roberto Monroy.  The Teves team could certainly factor in that battle as young Adam Teves has two victories and his 2015 championship winning father David has one win.

The Bay Area Hardtops are back in action this week, but who might be competing this week is still something we don't know.  Unlike the first race, there is no other event competing for the driver's time.  Dave Mackey and Kimo Oreta are anticipated, and it's been rumored that we may see three time Hardtop winner Jason Armstrong and Ron Ruiz.  These two drivers are California Hardtop regulars.  Other drivers who could show up include Dan Williams, Steve Cloyes and the possible debut of Doug Brauderick.  We'll have to wait and see who is willing to come support the show as the known Hardtop roster in Northern California reaches into the 20's.

This seven division program offers something for everybody, and the Jerry Hetrick Memorial A Modified race will be special to all who compete.  For further information, go to www.antiochspeedway.com.

RaceSaver Sprints, IMCA Modifieds Headline
Merced Speedway Show

Merced, CA...On the heels of last week's highly successful Timmy Post Memorial race, Merced Speedway has another action packed program lined up for Saturday night.  Back for their second appearance of the season will be the IMCA RaceSaver 305 Sprint Cars along with the IMCA Modifieds, Mini Stocks and California Sharp Mini Late Models.

The last time the RaceSaver Sprints were in town, it was Jesse Mack holding off Blake Robertson and Tanner Boul for the win as 17 drivers competed.  The championship battle has gotten must closer following the group's last three races at Tulare Thunder Bowl, Keller Auto Speedway and Santa Maria Raceway.  While George Tristao leads the battle on the strength of three Top 3 finishes, Monty Ferreira has won the last three events.  Ferreira has trimmed 25 points off of Tristao's lead and now trails by just four points.  Chris Ennis won the season opener and is just ten points out of the lead in a close championship battle.

We are 11 races into the RaceSaver Sprint season, and Grant Duinkerken is also in the hunt, 11 points out of the lead.  Like Tristao, Duinkerken is still looking for his first win of the season.  Other winners so far this year include two time winner Zane Blanchard, Cole Danell, Jared Faria and Boul.  The rules set is such that it keeps this division very competitive.  There are several drivers capable of winning on any given week.  Other drivers to watch for this week include fifth ranked Albert Pombo, Mauro Simone, Scott Meisner, Tony Pombo, Blaine Fagundes and Vaughn Schott.

Randy Brown was leading the way in IMCA Modified points through consistency.  The reigning champion had four Top 3 finishes going into the Timmy Post Memorial last week.  After spending a week in the Pacific Northwest on the Speedweek Tour, he made a long drive back to Merced from Lebanon, Oregon Friday night and early Saturday morning.  The long trip was worth it as Brown pocketed $2,000 for his win and a nice trophy.  Multi time champion Paul Stone was chasing Brown across the line in a second place finish.  The two time winner is fifth in points.  Mike Villanueva had a good run in third last week, which keeps the past Hanford champion 23 points out of the lead in second.

Last year's "Rookie Of The Year" Bruce "Bubba" Nelson had a big night last week as he won the Hobby Stock race and finished in the Top 5 in the Modified feature.  This kept Nelson tied with Darrell Hughes II for third in points and 16 points behind second ranked Villanueva.  However, Bubba is looking for more than points.  He's hungry for his first IMCA sanctioned Modified win after winning a non sanctioned race in Chowchilla.  Four time champion Ramie Stone was back and finishing tenth in the Main Event last week, which is good when you consider the 2016 point runnerup has blown two motors this year.  His brother Troy grabbed a heat win that night.  Ryan Larimer held off multi time Southwest Tour champion Jim Pettit II to finish sixth last week, while recent Medford winner Derek Nance had to win the B Main Event just to get into the feature.  This is how competitive this field is.  Other drivers to watch for this week include 2012 champion Bill Egleston, fourth generation racer Ryan Porter, Jarod Fast and Harley Turner.

With so much off time since the last time the class raced at Merced, point leader and reigning Mini Stock champion Chris Corder decided to go back to Stockton, where he raced Mini Stocks before coming to Merced Speedway.  This time, however, it was the Stockton Dirt Track.  As usual, the driver of the #68c car left town with the winner's trophy.  He has his eyes on the championship trophy at Merced Speedway, but there's a bit of a problem this time.  His sister, Jennifer Corder, is eying the same prize.  Jennifer, who has ranked second in both this division and Hobby Stocks in the past, has been the model of consistency.  Despite Chris winning three times, his lead is only 13 points over Jennifer.  Jennifer does have a win this season at Chowchilla.

When you talk about ladies who are due to win a Main Event at Merced this year, you have to include third ranked Lucy Falkenberg.  Lucy now has a pair of heat race wins and seconds in the Main Event.  This second generation racer has shown much improvement and seems poised to win at any time.  Destiny Carter is lurking back in fifth, just ahead of Jason Womack.  With a start this week, Destiny should take over fourth in points.  There are some new racers in the field this year, and other drivers to watch for this week include Shawn DePriest, Tyler Jackson and David Richards.

Michael Shearer took one look at the California Sharp Mini Late Models and decided it would be a great division to get a new generation of racers onto Merced's quarter-mile clay oval.  Promoter Ed Parker agreed, and this division was added to the schedule.  Tim Vaught, young Riley Jeppesen and Troy Foulger are the winners so far this year.  Foulger won last time out as the Shearer Team fielded an additional two cars to get the count up to six.  Shearer is also the official California Sharp Mini Late Model dealer, and he's hoping to grow the class at Merced with occasional visits to Dixon.  In addition to Vaught and Jeppesen, Ian Shearer and Tim Crews have been racing this class this year.  The other two cars should be there this week, though we don't know who will drive them this time.  Foulger and Tommy Bostic drove them last time.  As this class gains more cars, it's going to become much more exciting to watch.

The four division program with Sprint Cars at the top of the card should be a good one.  For further information, go to www.racemerced.com.

DeCarlo, Decker, Gomez Win Antioch Speedway Main Events

Antioch, CA...July 1...Nick DeCarlo scored the victory in the 25 lap All Star Series A Modified Main Event at Antioch Speedway.  The two time Petaluma Speedway champion was also the winner of the New Year's Bash this year, and his win  on Saturday night paid $1,000.  DeCarlo started on the sixth row outside, right behind Scott Busby.  Championship contender Mike Salazar had his motor problems worked out and led the early laps.  On his way to the front, Busby got caught up in a Raymond Lindeman spin and had to pit with a flat tire.  DeCarlo made his way to the front, and Busby wasn't far behind him.  DeCarlo and Busby had a good battle with DeCarlo coming out ahead.  Busby settled for second.  Salazar was a solid third as Eric Berendsen and Trevor Clymens rounded out the Top 5.

Jeff Decker won the 20 lap DIRTcar Late Model Main Event.  The incoming point leader had a front row start for the race and was impressive in victory.  As Decker was driving to his second win of the season, reigning champion Richard Papenhausen was making a late charge to the front.  Rookie Kimo Oreta won his first heat race earlier in the evening and managed to beat Papenhausen back to the line in a good race for second.  David Newquist and Chester Kniss rounded out the Top 5.

Todd Gomez returned and won his second 20 lap B Modified Main Event.  Gomez is a past Street Stock champion at the track, and this was his second win of the season.  Gomez had a front row start and at one time had a straightaway advantage wiped out by a yellow flag for a Doff Cooksey spin.  Gomez continued to lead the way and would score an impressive victory.  Cooksey battled back to beat heat winner K.C. Keller to the line for second.  Chuck Golden and Mark Garner completed the Top 5.

Point leader Chris Long won an eventful 20 lap Hobby Stock Main Event.  It was the third win of the season for Long.  The race started out with heat race winner Frank Furtado building a straightaway advantage before a yellow flag bunched the field.  Anthony Vigna gained the lead on the restart, but his hopes of winning ended with a blown motor.  Furtado got caught up in that, and Long had the lead over Dave Lincoln.  Contact sent Lincoln spinning, and Long was starting to smoke late in the race.  Heat race winner Robert Niven gave Long all the pressure he could handle, but Long prevailed at the checkered flag.  Niven was a career best second, followed by Brent Curran, Gene Haney and Jordan Swank.

Point leader Mike Corsaro won his first 20 lap Dwarf Car Main Event of the season.  Corsaro spun early on and had to restart in the back.  Devan Kammermann made a pit stop with a flat tire, and David Michael Rosa led Brandon Anderson early on.  Corsaro made a charge through the pack and was quickly up to second.  The leaders hit lapped traffic, allowing Corsaro to take the lead.  Charlie Correia brought out a yellow flag with five laps remaining.  Corsaro had pressure from Rosa, but he would not be denied the impressive victory.  Anderson finished a season best third, followed by Chuck Connover and Kammermann.

Racing Resumes next week with the Jerry Hetrick Memorial A Modified race.  Also on the card will be the Wingless Spec Sprints, DIRTcar Late Models, Limited Late Models, Hobby Stocks, Dwarf Cars and Bay Area Hardtops.  For further information, go to www.antiochspeedway.com.

Brown, Diaz, Nelson Score Timmy Post Memorial Wins
At Merced Speedway

Merced, CA...Randy Brown pocketed $2,000 for his win in the 30 lap Timmy Post Memorial Race for IMCA Modifieds Saturday night at Merced Speedway.  The night's racing action featured increased purses for all three divisions.  In addition to that, there was a live concert under the grandstands before the races and a fireworks display after the IMCA Modifieds ran their race.  The entire show was free to the spectators.  It was a fitting memorial event for Timmy Post, who was a young man who died in an automobile accident on graduation night in 1999.  Timmy grew up at the speedway and was a beloved member of the racing community.  The free admission for such a big night was exactly the kind of thing Timmy would have loved to see happen at the track.

Randy Brown is the reigning IMCA Modified champion and current point leader, and he had a ten hour drive from Willamette Speedway in Oregon, where he had been competing the night before.  Brown started third and wasted little time battling Joe Antonetti and Ryan Larimer for the lead.  Two time winner and multi time champion Paul Stone started back in ninth and worked his way to the front.  However, the flying Brown forced Stone to settle for second this time.  Championship contender Mike Villanueva was a strong third as Bruce "Bubba" Nelson, Antonetti, Larimer, multi time Southwest Tour champion Jim Pettit II, Darrell Hughes II, Bret Bennett and four time Merced champion Ramie Stone rounded out the Top 10.  Brown, P. Stone, Larimer and Troy Stone were eight lap heat race winners.  Derek Nance won the 12 lap B Main ahead of Harley Turner and past Street Stock champion Randy Brewer.

Two time reigning IMCA Sport Modified champion Rick Diaz won his fourth 30 lap Main Event.  Diaz started back in eighth and quickly charged up to third as Dylan Schriner took the lead from Tim Ragsdale.  Diaz grabbed second from Ragsdale by lap 10 and went to work on Schriner.   A high move in Turn 2 of the 12th lap gained Diaz the lead.  Diaz maintained his hold on the lead from there and brought it home to an impressive victory.  Schriner had pressure from State point leader Shane DeVolder and 21st starter Lee Jensen.  A lap 23 restart provided DeVolder with his opportunity to move into second, and Jenson grabbed third from Schriner two laps later.  At the checkered flag, it was Diaz winning, followed by DeVolder, Jensen, Schriner, Jeremy Hoff, Paul Espino, T.J. Etchison, Danny Roe, Shawn Bryant and Tanner Thomas.  DeVolder, Diaz, Schriner and Jack Aguiar were eight lap heat race winners.  Jensen had to win the 12 lap B Main ahead of Dave Smart and Andrew Odgers to get into the feature.

Two time Hobby Stock champion Bruce Nelson won the 30 lap Hobby Stock Main Event.  Nelson took the wheel of reigning champion Michael Shearer's #67j car and made a charge from 10th starting to score his first win of the season.  Kodie Dean and championship rival Garrett Corn, both three time winners this year, raced into the first two positions early on.  Nelson made an inside pass on the back stretch on lap six to take third from Robbie Loquaci.  After a lap nine yellow flag, an intense three car battle began between Corn, Nelson and Dean.  An inside move on the front stretch of the 15th lap gained Corn the lead from Dean with Nelson moving by for second.  Corn and Nelson ran side by side for two laps before Nelson moved ahead.  Multi time Watsonville champion Billy Nelson moved up to battle Dean for third.  There was no stopping Bruce Nelson as he won with Corn settling for second.  Billy Nelson out dueled Dean for third as Kyle Wood, Austin Van Hoff, Shannon Nelson, James Stockton, Loquaci and Kristie Shearer completed the Top 10.  Billy Nelson, Bruce Nelson and Dean won eight lap heat races.

Next Saturday night's races are presented by Blue Line Rentals.  IMCA RaceSaver Sprints make their second appearance at the speedway along with IMCA Modifieds, Mini Stocks and Mini Late Models.  For further information, go to www.racemerced.com.

Becker Battles Majdic For Silver Dollar Speedway Win

Chico, CA...June 30...Reigning 410 Sprint Car champion Sean Becker returned to Chico Silver Dollar Speedway and won the 25 lap Main Event Friday night.  Becker drives the Dan Menne owned car, and he started his night off with an eight lap heat race win.  Fellow heat race winner Chase Majdic won the other heat race.  The 2016-17 Red Bluff 500 Open Kart champion Majdic sprinted out to the early Main Event lead ahead of reigning Placerville champion Mason Moore and current point leader and fast timer (11.524) Andy Forsberg.  A lap three caution flag flew for Brent Bjork in Turn 4.  Becker settled into third behind Majdic and Moore on the restart.  Becker took second from Moore on lap eight, just before the final caution flag waved for Kalib Henry in Turn 1.  Madjic led Becker on the restart as Forsberg and Michael Ing dropped Moore back to fifth.  Becker began pressuring Majdic for the lead before racing by on lap 19.  Once in front, Becker brought it home to a well earned victory.  Forsberg took second from Majdic at the white flag and held him off to finish there.  Ing was a solid fourth, followed by Justyn Cox, Moore, Brad Bumgarner, Henry, Brain Boswell and Bjork.

Point leader Phil Marino won the 20 lap Street Stock Main Event.  After settling for second to Richard Workman in the eight lap heat race, Marino raced into the Main Event lead from the start.  Brent Lawrence was an early second, followed closely by Cory Hall.  A lap eight caution flag flew for Fritz Zanker in Turn 4.  Lawrence headed pitside, and Marino led Hall and Workman on the restart.  Hall briefly took the lead from Marino on lap ten, only to watch Marino race by a lap later.  Last row starter Gary Newman was up to fourth, and a lap 16 caution flag flew for Mike Slingtom in Turn 4.  Newman grabbed third on the restart as Marino continued to lead Hall.  Marino led the remaining laps to score the victory ahead of Hall, Newman, Danny Dozier, Workman, Slingtom, Zanker and Lawrence.

Craig Swim stayed in the Wingless Spec Sprint championship hunt with his first 20 lap Main Event victory.  After an eight lap heat race win for point leader Tony Richards ahead of Swim, Swim raced into the Main Event lead at the start.  Richards settled into second ahead of Gary Paulson and Casey McClain.  A winner on the Hunt Wingless Spec Sprint Tour this year, McClain slipped past Paulson for third on lap four.  Richards closed in a bit on Swim down the stretch in the non stop event.  However, Swim prevailed at the checkered flag as Richards settled for second and McClain was third.  Jeremy Wilson made a late pass on Paulson to finish fourth as Josh Tucker and Barry Pries Jr. completed the finishing order.

IMCA Sport Modified point leader Phillip Shelby won his third 20 lap Main Event.  Yreka point leader Justin Foux darted out to the early Main Event lead ahead of Jeremy Phillips and Shelby.  Shelby slipped past Phillips for second on lap three and took up pursuit of Foux in the non stop event.  Foux and Shelby began a thrilling side by side battle for the lead on lap eight, and Shelby finally grabbed the lead on lap 14.  Phillips raced by Foux for second on lap 15.  Shelby sped home to the impressive victory.  Phillips lost his second place finish as he didn't report to tech after the races, giving the position to Foux, followed by State point leader Shane DeVolder, heat race winner Tyler Rodgers, Sean Halterman, Jeff Fear and Raymond Benkowski.

Jason Armstrong captured his third ten lap California Hardtop Main Event victory.  The California Hardtops brought six old time race cars, but Dave Reed crashed early in preliminaries to end his evening.  The eight lap heat race was won impressively by Ron Ruiz ahead of Armstrong.  Armstrong grabbed the lead in the Main Event and steadily pulled away.  The man with the perfect attendance record this year, "The Rocket Man" Ken Clifford, retired before the checkered flag with steering issues.  Son Jason Clifford was battling over heating issues.  There were no issues for Armstrong until the final lap.  With a big lead over Ruiz and Dan Whitney, Armstrong spun in the final turn.  He had the presence of mind to gather it back up and still finish first, followed by a season best second for Ruiz, Whitney, J. Clifford and K. Clifford.

Langenderfer Comes Back From Spin To Win
At Orland Raceway

Orland, CA...July 1...Point leader Jeremy Langenderfer rebounded from a spin to win his fourth 20 lap Pure Stock Main Event Saturday night at Orland Raceway.  The double point event was part of Girl Scout Night at the races.  Langenderfer set the early pace ahead of Cody Bundy.  Langenderfer spun on lap seven, giving the lead to Bundy.  However, Keith Ross took the lead from Bundy on the restart.  Bundy came back to grab the lead from Ross on lap ten as Langenderfer was back up to third.  Langenderfer was second on lap 13, and Bundy's brush with the front wall enabled Langenderfer to regain  the lead.  Contact saw Bundy spin from second on lap 18 as Ross's run up front ended.  Langenderfer went on to win the eventful race ahead of Brad Ray, Chris Barnett, Shannon Collins and Amanda Koop.

Donovan Chilton snapped point leader Tom Davis' Mini Stock Main Event win streak at three with his impressive 20 lap victory.  Dustin Hills led the opening lap before Davis went by on the backstretch to lead the second lap.  Chilton was third, and he made an outside pass on the back stretch of the fourth lap to gain second from Hills.  Seth Libbee spun exiting Turn 4 for a lap six caution flag.  Chilton raced by Davis for the lead on the restart as championship contender Sean Perry settled into third.  The lead three cars ran closely for several laps, but Perry slowed and pitted in the infield on lap 18.  Chilton brought it home to victory ahead of Davis, Hills, reigning champion John Kirkpatrick and Perry.

Point leader Keith Ross had luck on his side in winning the 20 lap Mini Truck Main Event.  "Rollin" Olin Crain raced into the lead at the start of the race ahead of 2013 champion Ross Vige.  Ross made an outside pass in Turn 2 of the second lap to take second from Vige, and reigning champion Dan Webster made a similar move to take over third on lap three.  A crash in Turn 2 forced a lap 16 caution flag, which proved to be Crain's undoing.  Ross raced into the lead on the restart, but Crain was working hard on the outside groove in his effort to regain the lead.  Crain spun exiting the final turn as Ross went on to victory.  Webster finished second ahead of Vige, Crain and William Fogle.

Josh Jacobo went flag to flag in winning the four car, 20 lap Wingless Gas Sprint Main Event.  On July 15th, Pure Stocks, Mini Stocks, Mini Trucks, Micro Sprints and Wingless Gas Sprints are all back in action again.  Gates open at 5:00 PM with the first race at 7:00 PM.  General Admission is $8.00, Juniors (7-12) and Seniors are $5.00 and children 6 and under are free.  For further information, go to www.orlandraceway.org.
