Pit Stops From Antioch, Merced and Chowchilla Speedways

Antioch Speedway had another five division show last week with IMCA Modifieds headlining the show that also included the Northern All Stars Limited Late Models, Hobby Stocks, Dwarf Cars and Wingless Spec Sprints.  Car count dipped a bit, but there was still some good racing to be seen.  A few point races went in a new direction as a result of the evening's action.

In the Hobby Stock division came news of a midweek decision to disqualify Brian Zachary from an apparent victory due to failing tech.  The controversy of the previous weekend led to the hiring of a new head tech official, Jeff Yoakem.  Yoakem has an impressive resume as an engine man at Rebello Racing and was a tech official at the track back in the 1990's.

Track management had decided to have a tech inspection of the previous week's Top 5 finishers, but only two of them were on hand for this race.  Jeremy Jennings was off on his boat, which unfortunately had motor problems.  Zachary didn't return with the Jim Freethy car, and Nick Baldwin went to Placerville, where he surprised with a fifth place finish in a 22 car field.  His absence pretty much handed the 2015 championship to Kimo Oreta unless Oreta decides to walk away.

Jason Jennings had led much of the previous week's feature, only to lose the lead to Zachary late.  Jennings' car was smoking late in that race, and he had an electrical fire after the checkered flag flew.  He took his motor apart during the week and was not planning to return on Saturday.  However, his father sponsored the gaskets to help him get the car back together, and he fired it up again on Friday night.  The 2004 Four Banger champion passed the pre race tech and was awarded the previous week's victory.

Meanwhile, Kimo Oreta finally won his first feature of the season three weeks ago, which meant that he had to start back in tenth a week later.  He didn't really worry about that or the fact that the race never had a yellow flag.  Kimo commented prior to the most recent race that he was the new driver once, and he's not against having to come from the back of the pack to try to win.  He only managed a sixth that night, and he was hoping for better at this race.

Making that a challenge was two time champion Melissa Myers, who was back after taking a week off.  Melissa won the Main Event with Oreta right behind her.  The win put her back into second in the standings.  Despite a solid third place finish, Jennings still hasn't moved into the Top 10 in points.  The driver in fourth, Michael Cooper, was coming off of back to back terrible finishes, and he won a three car battle for the much needed fourth place finish.

Attrition hit the division hard in preliminaries.  After winning his heat race, Danny Jones had mechanical woes to end his night.  Rookie Jordan Swank couldn't even get the #73 car back to his pit area after his heat race.  This duo was tied for fifth going into the night, and the heat win by Jones actually broke that tie in favor of Jones.  Swank is only three points ahead of Calvin Louis Jr. after Louis finished fifth in the most recent race.  Louis was nursing his smoking car across the finish line.

Natalie Perry was back in action after a not so satisfying finish last time out.  Motor problems had kept the 2011 Super Hobby Stock point runner up out of the action after the opener. The last time out, she did grab a checkered flag, but she had her foot to the floor and just didn't seem to have any power.  After another week off, crew chief Steve Perry had that purple #40 car back and ready for another race.

Natalie approaches the races with a fun attitude, but she's not anybody's doormat out there.  It was interesting hearing her relate a story from her Super Hobby Stock days where she had to let another driver know on the track that she wouldn't just let him use her as a wall.  Unfortunately, she was penalized for her actions that night, but her point was made.  This time out, Natalie had fourth for several laps and dropped back to last, only to make a late pass on Frank Furtado to at least move up a spot.

Natalie was putting fliers up in the pits to let people know about the Relay For Life of Antioch Celebration.  The event will take place in the Deer Valley High School front parking lot on Saturday, April 25 from 10:00 AM-2:00 PM.  It is a celebration of Cancer survivors.  She was hoping to get some of the racers to bring their cars for the Day In The Park.  More information can be found at http://www.relayforlife.org/antiochca.

The Wingless Spec Sprints came up a bit light on car count this week.  Roy Fisher made good on his declaration of a week ago that he would not be racing for points.  Despite being a close second to Kyle Bakkie after his second win a week earlier, Roy skipped the race and watched from the grandstands.  This effectively makes it a three car championship battle with Kyle Bakkie having an apparent advantage after his second win of the season in the most recent race.  Bakkie also won his heat race to stretch his point lead over Rick Panfili.

Panfili was in an early race tangle at the previous race in which Alan Miranda, James East and Bakkie were also involved.  East was a no show for this race, and Miranda was unable to get his car back together after his back stretch flip.  Likewise, Jimmy Perry III was a no show after blowing a motor while running third the last time out.  Panfili was flirting with a black flag himself with damage to his car, but he managed to get it to the checkered flag in fifth.  His fifth again in the most recent race still meant last.  Panfili is now 24 points out of the lead, but he will likely need to get at least one feature win to have a chance.  That would be his first career win if he can pull it off.

Marcus Smith is in his first season in Wingless Spec Sprints after he ran some BCRA Midget Lites races last season.  Marcus is the son of former Altamont Street Stock racer Mark Smith, who is a long time friend of Dan Gonderman.  Dan and his father Ken Gonderman were again in the pits with the Smith team as Marcus is running a Gonderman motor in his #28 car.  Marcus made a move past Ryon Siverling during the race to collect his second third place finish, which keeps him 40 points out of the lead in third.

At this point, a championship seems unlikely for Ryon Siverling, the grandson of NCMA Hall Of Famer Burt Siverling.  Ryon made his first starts in this division last year and suffered a myriad of mechanical failures in the process.  Ryon actually got a taste for these cars when Burt let him hot lap his car prior to one of the NCMA pavement races a few years ago.  He found that he liked it, so he began putting a car together, sporting the elder Siverling's orange paint job and #77.

Ryon had a second place run going in a race earlier this year before more mechanical issues stopped him.  A few races ago, he managed a fifth place finish with Fisher and past champion Perry behind him, and he took it up a notch a race later with his second place finish.  Ryon has moved into fifth in the standings, just 14 points behind Fisher after his most recent fourth place finish.  It's not just about the racing.  Working on the car is something he and his grandfather do together.  If he keeps running this strong, he may be taking a Main Event winner's trophy home with him.

The attrition bug has already bitten a couple of racers in the Limited Late Model ranks.  Peggy Sue Jarred is still struggling to get a motor together for her #313 car after suffering a blown motor at Merced.  John Keith lost a motor the last time he was at Antioch to knock him out of the action as well.  With a few others still not ready, that left eight cars for Saturday's race, including the four major point players.

Mike Hynes has been racing on and off since the 1980's, mostly at Petaluma Speedway.  He's also crewed for racers, including Mike Gustafson, through the years.  His runner up season of 2014 was his best season to date, and he was second coming into this race.  He also got to make his first Late Model feature start in David Newquist's second car and took a checkered flag in sixth a week earlier.  Mike actually has a Late Model at home that isn't quite ready.

While Hynes is chasing the point lead, Mark Garner at least knows that all of the Merced races have counted in points and that he has a commanding lead over Buddy Thatcher after three feature wins.  He was hoping to gain some ground on Larry Damitz at Antioch and won his heat race in impressive fashion.  Hynes won his heat race, but the two drivers crossed paths in an unpleasant way for Garner.  Contact sent Garner hard into the Turn 2 wall in the Main Event.  Garner suffered heavy front end damage and has brought his car to the shop of Chester Kniss for repairs.  With Garner out of the race, track officials black flagged Hynes to end his race.

Meanwhile, Jim Freethy was hoping to forget about the previews race.  It wasn't one of the better moments for the 2013 track champion.  In fact, it ended with him reviving a black flag after spinning twice in Turn 4. Jim admitted he just missed the setup that night and was off of his game.  This time around, things were looking a little better, and he took a checkered flag in fourth behind Lori Brown.

For Brown, it was her second straight third place finish, and she hopes she is on her way to contending for another Main Event victory.  She's picked up a few in her career as a past division champion, and it just may be that the next one is just around the corner for her.  Lori and husband Ron have found a good graphics guy this year, and the two cars they have fielded this season are two of the nicest looking cars at the track.

In the IMCA Modified division, Nick DeCarlo made a decision that really came as no surprise to this writer.  He decided to return to Petaluma for the season opener, abandoning the Antioch point lead in the process.  He is the 2014 Petaluma champion, and he won a nice battle with Michael Paul Jr. and Oresete Gonella in winning the season opening Main Event.  Actually, Nick's father Terry DeCarlo has revealed that Nick would probably abandon any point race if the right money race came along.  Last season, it just lined up where he was able to make all of the Petaluma races, and he was able to give the DeCarlo family their first championship on a big track.

Bobby Motts Jr. wanted it known that he is going for the championship, and he is a past Street Stock champion with over 20 feature wins at the track in his career.  Bobby is driving the car Nick Caughman Jr. drove to the Petaluma championship not too many years ago, and he drove it well on Saturday night at Antioch.  Bobby won the Main Event, and he passed Scott Busby to become the new point leader.

Busby may not have been a happy camper after gaining the lead with a Carl Berendsen II spin about midway through Saturday's Main Event.  Track officials assigned the blame to Busby for the spin and sent him to the back of the pack.  A few laps later, his race was over.  Scott had remarked before the races started that he would probably make most of the races, but he remained non committal as far as whether or not he was pursuing a fifth Antioch Dirt Modified championship.  He left rather abruptly after the races, so there's no word on what that could mean going forward.

Editor's Note:  Having seen the Racing Edge Video highlights, it was definitely very close.  I won't disagree with the official's call on this one.  Busby is right behind Berendsen and he spins.  It was just close racing, but you'll get a call on this more times than not.  Hopefully, we continue to see these two drivers battling the rest of the season at Antioch.

For Berendsen's part, he is wanting to contend for some feature wins this year.  The 2014 champion missed the January races, so he has no expectations of contending for the championship.  With a former Aaron Crowell car, however, Carl certainly feels he can win a race or two, and he did a nice job of leading several laps of the Main Event.  That was a marked improvement over the previous race, where suspension damage after an early tangle left him with an ill handing car that he somehow managed to get to a lead lap finish.  After the spin, Carl charged back to third, putting him into the Top 5 in the standings.

Sean O'Gara was definitely looking good in his #82 car as he ran second until very late in the race.  Unfortunately, his car was smoking, and it finally gave up on him.  That enabled the returning Mike Salazar to make a nice season debut with a second place finish to go with his heat race win.  O'Gara has had some Top 5 point success at Antioch, ranking second in 2011.  He is a second generation racer and the son of Vallejo Stock Car driver John O'Gara.  It took him a few years to finally follow his father's footsteps, but he has certainly proven to be a tough competitor like his father.  John was actually in the pits working with his son.

Back in the 1980's, Dan Dozier was racing Street Stocks at Antioch.  He had to pay his dues in the C and B Mains, but he got faster.  Just when it looked like he was getting some place, he stepped aside.  During the past decade or so, Dan returned with a Modified, and he has since put his son Danny behind the wheel.  Danny was coming off of a Top 5 finish at Chico a night earlier.  He returned to Antioch Saturday, a track in which has has won a Main Event.  Unfortunately, he had a DNF this time around, but there's always next time.

After spinning out of the lead in the Dwarf Car feature last time, David Teves returned with a new car.  This was the shake down run for the car, and he chased his son Adam to a second place finish in his heat race.  The car seemed to be running pretty well, and the team had the car up on jacks making last minute changes right up until hot laps that night.  In the Main Event, David managed to pass race long leader Danny Wagner briefly on a couple occasions, but Wagner was too much to handle.  Teves fell to third as point leader Wagner won for the third time.

Charlie Correia hauled three of his Dwarf Cars to the track Saturday night as Randy Jahoda joined Charlie and teammate Mike Corsaro this time around.  Jahoda actually has a car that he's working on, but he took advantage of the opportunity to drive for Charlie again.  He managed a lead lap seventh, while Correia had one of his better finishes of the season in fifth.  Corsaro, meanwhile, grabbed a second place finish, which will move him into third in the standings behind Wagner and D. Teves.

Brian Gray has been at this racing thing for a while.  He was one of the first Baylands Raceway 360 Sprint Car drivers and a feature winner in 1986.  He was also an original Spec Sprint racer at Antioch in 1999 and went on to be a feature winner there.  When he had the opportunity to purchase the former Ray Etherton Dwarf Car, he didn't pass it up.  The Dwarf Car is a bit easier for Brian to maintain as he often finds himself with no pit crew.  Brian keeps himself busy in many ways these days.  He and his wife own a professional bucking bull that they have brought to some of the top rodeos in the state.  On this night, it was about racing the Dwarf Car, and Brian took a checkered flag in eighth place.

If the name Jerry Doty sounds familiar to Stock Car fans of the 1980's, there's a reason.  Back in the 1984-85 time frame, Jerry raced Stock Cars at Baylands.  He ended up losing that car, but when he got the chance to race Dwarf Cars within the last decade, he went for it.  He won a hotly contested 2010 championship, beating a division legend, Ricardo Rivera, in the process.  He debuted his new car with a few starts last year, and he's back making a Top 5 point run this season. His fourth place finish and heat race win last week enabled him to maintain fifth in the standings ahead of Jack Haverty.

Haverty was a bit disappointed when he was called part of the yellow flag after spinning to avoid an already spun D. Teves in the Main Event a week earlier.  He wouldn't be much happier last week after his beautiful #2j car received some front end damage in a Turn 4 crash with past Pure Stock champion Robert Coe, eliminating both from the action.  Speaking of nice looking cars, the rapidly improving Miranda Chappa drove to a lead lap sixth place feature finish in the most recent race.  Could a Top 5 finish be just around the corner for her?

The valley side of Oval Motorsports had a busy weekend as Merced Speedway was running on Saturday night and Chowchilla was Sunday afternoon.  One bit of good news came when 2014 Merced IMCA Sport Mod champion Rick Diaz decided to bring his car out for both events.  Diaz showed why he was the champion at Merced when he came from the back of the pack to win on Saturday night, then he returned to Chowchilla for a second place finish.  Though he isn't running for points at Merced, he's just eight points behind Fred Ryland for the lead at Chowchilla.

Ryland had a very busy weekend as he went to Watsonville and won on Friday night before heading to The Valley. "Fast Freddy" was unable to make a winning pass around Diaz and settled for second.  At Chowchila, Diaz kept Ryland at bay again and forced him to settle for third.  Ryland has ten wins this season, but he knows his IMCA National point effort needs more wins.  Making matters worse, if Diaz sticks around at Chowchilla, it may result in a tight championship battle.  Of course, that would be good news for the fans.

Keith Brown Jr. was the victim of a busy late week work schedule that left him so poorly rested that he needed to cancel his Watsonville plans.  At Merced, he managed a Top 5 feature finish, but he saved the best for last.  Jr. raced into the lead and kept Diaz and Ryland behind him for what would be his first feature win of the season.  He's had several near misses, but this win had to be gratifying for the third generation racer.  Keith still ranks second in the IMCA State point race.

Any time Jeremy Hoff and Bruce Nelson make the show at Merced, the racing seems to be more competitive.  Saturday was no exception as Hoff won his heat race and led several Main Event laps before finishing third.  Nelson, meanwhile, finished fourth and decided to head to Chowchilla.  His results there were a bit disappointing as he finished outside of the Top 10.  All things considered, the double digit car count at both tracks for this division was one of the positives to take away from the weekend.

Merced point leader Josh Hensley was hoping to have a positive outcome as well. The Sport Mod rookie is hoping to take things up a notch as he maintains a healthy point lead, but his seventh place finish at Merced continued his streak of finishing no better than seventh in his previous four races.  At Chowchilla, he fared a bit better in sixth.  A lead lap sixth is exactly what Dwayne Short had at Merced as he tries to stay in the lead in the battle for second.  He'll be third in points at the moment, but second ranked Ryland isn't expected to be at Merced this week.

Northern All Stars Hobby Stocks also had a good turn out at both tracks as they too produced double digit car counts in both places.  The man of the weekend was again Kevin Joaquin.  Kevin wasn't able to collect his third feature win at Merced as Marc Key proved too difficult to pass.  The long time Speedway competitor Key became the seventh different winner of the season.  The last time Hobby Stocks were at Chowchilla, Joaquin was beating a four car field for victory.  This time around, he held off last week's Merced winner Gary Hildebrand to win in a 12 car field.  Kevin paces the points list at both tracks.

What's interesting was only three others followed Kevin from Merced to Chowchilla, and that would be Dexter Long, Shannon Nelson and Kristie Shearer.  Kristie did okay for herself with a fifth place finish at Chowchilla.  She had a third place finish at Merced to make it a good weekend overall.  Nick Lawrence made a shake down run at Merced a week earlier, but the problems he found nearly kept him home for the weekend.  Late repairs enabled Nick to get his car together in time to be in Chowchilla for the Main Event.  He managed to go from 12th starting to sixth and was encouraged by the results.

Two big names in recent seasons, Andrew Krumm and Marshall Weaver, were fourth and fifth at Merced Saturday night.  Both were making their first starts of the year.  Krumm is a two time Hobby Stock champion at Merced, and past IMCA Modified champion Weaver was handling the driving duties in Josh Hesley's #86 car.  Darren Miguel drove that car at Chowchilla, but his results were disappointing.  Speaking of Chowchilla, it looks like last year's third ranked driver, Austin Van Hoff, may be Joaquin's closest rival in the point battle there.  Van Hoff ended up eighth, but he sits 20 points behind Joaquin in the point battle

Robbie Loquaci, a past Chowchilla Mini Stock champion, would grab the final podium spot in third on Sunday ahead of 2014 point runner up Kode Dean.  What was nice is it seemed like Chowchilla Speedway had some good local support for the Sunday afternoon event, but the drivers were braving some dry and dusty conditions.

IMCA Modified action was even red flagged at one point after Randy Brown crashed and rolled his car.  The past track champion's night didn't get any better as he did serious damage to his car hauler and the fence on the way out.  There are just some days when you wish maybe you had stayed home.  Sunday was probably one of them for Randy.  Hopefully, the damage isn't too serious for the car or trailer.

Josh Vogt is the 2014 IMCA Modified champion at Chowchilla and Ventura, and he again showed why when he drove to victories in both the heat race and the Main Event on Sunday at     Chowchilla.  Unfortunately, Vogt's second straight win didn't put him into the point lead as Bakersfield area racer Billy Wilker finished seventh.  Billy has been racing for a number of years at Bakersfield and other tracks in both Street Stocks and IMCA Modifieds.

Vogt didn't have to drive too hard to get his win as he started on the front row.  However, Karl Rose started last on the grid, making his second place finish all the more impressive.  Harley Turner was the final podium finisher in third as Chowchilla area racers, Michael Shearer and (past Modified Mini Stock champion) Daniel Luukkenon were fourth and fifth, respectively.

The Mini Stocks had a busy weekend at both tracks and car count wasn't as strong as hoped for at either place.  There were two different winners making season debuts.  Robert Alger won the Merced race, while 2014 Antioch champion Brent Curran collected the winner's plaque at Chowchilla. Past Merced Mini Stock champion Alex Odishoo led the Chowchilla race for several laps before being passed by Curran and Jadon Harrington to finish third.  Odishoo is second in Chowchilla points, but it is a distant second.

The man leading Mini Stocks at both tracks at the moment is 2014 Merced champion Chris Corder.  Corder managed a third place finish at Merced and settled for fifth at Chowchilla.  When Darren Miguel had a DNF at Merced, Corder managed to add a few points to his point lead there.  Miguel wasn't the only point contender having mechanical issues.  A blown clutch took Kevin Lockerby out of the running in his heat race as he fell back to fifth in the standings.  Joy Alger and Dennis Copus are now fourth and fifth in the standings at Merced.  Neither of them did particularly well in their non Top 5 finishes, but Lockerby didn't get any points at all.

Alicia Caldwell made a nice season debut with a fifth at Merced before collecting a third place finish at Chowchilla.  She chased Mike Germait across the line at Merced.  Germait was also just getting his season started.  Past Watsonville champion Dan McCabe won the last time he was in Merced a few weeks ago, but Robert Alger forced him to settle for second this time out.  The competition level in the Mini Stocks in The Valley is pretty high, and you definitely have to earn the victories.  Corder, Miguel, R. Alger and McCabe are four who have won at Merced so far.

The Merced newspaper spoke of the Sportsman division and the drivers who love the class.  Car count has been hurting so far this year.  For the second time this season, a five car field was on hand for the popular nostalgic division.  This included the season debut of Mike Palmberg, a past cal Mod competitor.  There were two different winners as Marcus Lung won his heat race and Eric Seale crossed the line first in the feature.  However, Seale ended up disqualified, handing the win to Jeff Bristow ahead of the point leader Lung.

Saturday night racing continues at Antioch and Merced this week.  Antioch will feature Winged 360 Sprint Cars, DIRTcar Late Models, Dwarf Cars, IMCA Sport Mods and Wingless Spec Sprints. Merced is having Little League Appreciation Night where every little league player who shows up in uniform will receive a free admission if accompanied by one paying adult.  IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sport Mods, Hobby Stocks and Mini Stocks will be part of the card.  Chowchilla returns on May 3 with the same four divisions that are racing this week at Merced.  For more information, check the official Oval Motorsports Website.

Winged 360 Sprint Cars Return To Antioch Speedway

When Ricky Brophy sat behind the wheel of his #3 Sprint Car last week at Antioch Speedway, he was hoping to have more of the bugs worked out of his car.  A few weeks earlier, he was at Petaluma struggling to make laps.  Before that, he and friend and fellow competitor Shawn Arriaga were sorting through a myriad of problems.  To say the least, its been a struggle.

Ricky is the son of respected chiropractor and long time racer Rick "Doc" Brophy.  Not surprisingly, the older Brophy has a car of his own that he'll debut at some point this season.  Rick has raced dragsters and was a Sportsman competitor at Antioch Speedway in 1979-80.  When Wingless Spec Sprints started at Antioch in 1999, he built a car and shared the driving duties with his son.  Rick won two Main Events that season.

For all intents and purposes, this is the younger Brophy's rookie season in the faster Winged Sprint Cars, and he wants it to go just right.  It's been a struggle making sure everything is situated, but he hopes that when the division runs their second of eight scheduled races this Saturday night, everything will be ready.  He is eager show what he can do against the competition.

Meanwhile, Dan Gonderman was in the pits working with young Marcus Smith, the son of his longtime friend Mark Smith.  Marcus has a Spec Sprint with a Gonderman motor in it.  Gonderman is a two time champion in that division, but he wanted to bring his Winged 360 Sprinter for some hot laps last week.  Regardless, the orange #8 car will be on hand Saturday night as he resumes his quest to win a Main Event.

What's interesting is that in addition to Gonderman and the Brophy's, the division has three other Spec Sprint graduates in Chris Magoon, Zack Lynsky and Roy Fisher.  Fisher was Top 5 in 360 Sprint points last year and hopes to make his season debut soon, possibly this week.  Antioch has had the wingless class since 1999, but promoter John Soares Jr. also wants something a little faster.

Over the past decade, Soares has been working to establish his own Winged 360 Sprint Car division.  There have been locally based racers urging him to do this through the years, and the expansion of the track back in 2009 was made with Sprint Cars and more Late Model races in mind.  From that time, there have been 15 races, and the last ten have not had a repeat winner.

This year, Soares booked a more ambitious eight race schedule and saw nine cars make the opener. There are more cars on the way, such as Brophy and Fisher, but it's a nice start.  At the head of the pack so far are two champions.  It was 2007 champion Art McCarthy winning the season opener in March ahead of defending champion Chris Magoon.

McCarthy is no stranger to winning races.  He was a front runner at Petaluma Speedway back in the late 1980's and early 1990's and raced at Baylands before that.  He won the 1996 and 2002 Petaluma championships.  He figures to be a contender again this year.  Magoon, meanwhile, is a past Marysville Wingless Spec Sprint champion before leading the pack in 360 Sprint Cars at Antioch last season.

Anthony Espinoza, Shawn Arriaga and Brandon Powell were also in the mix last time out.  Arriaga is a third generation racer and one of the drivers who has won a feature at Antioch in the last ten races.  Shawn has also had much success at Petaluma, including a 2007 championship.  His father Fred raced Super Modifieds at San Jose, and his mother Sheri raced Supers and Sprint Cars, winning a Main Event at Antioch in the 1990's.  Grandfather Gil Richardson was a Hardtop star at Vallejo Speedway in the 1960's and 1970's.

For Saturday night, Soares is hoping to see a slight bump in car count as a few more cars debut.  In the long haul, he's hoping to establish Antioch Speedway as a track with it's own, very competitive Winged 360 Sprint Car program.  This weekend's race marks the next step in the process. Nearly 25 Years Later, Dwarf Cars Are Still Going Strong

It was back in 1991 when Dale Pyatt added a new division to his one eight-mile dirt oval in Stockton, known as Delta Speedway.  He already had a nice Mini Sprint division and a competitive and exciting Mini Stock class.  For good measure, he added what he called Outlaw Hardtops.  They called them Dwarf Cars in Arizona, where he got the idea to add the division.

The class caught on rather quickly as he crowned Scotty Hoff the first champion.  The division caught the eye of a past NASCAR Regional champion, Doug Williams, who was racing Mini Sprints at Delta at the time.  Doug Philpott of the famous Philpott family also took note, and both ended up with cars.

In fact, it was Philpott who joined a bunch of Arizona drivers along with John Soares Jr., Jim Soares and Ray Ehterton to race Dwarf Cars at Petaluma as part of the Maseli & Son's Late Model program at the end of 1992.  The race was a thriller, and promoter John Soares Sr. immediately added Dwarf Cars to the 1993 schedule, making it the first big track in California to run Dwarf Cars.  Jim Soares was the first champion.

At Delta, Philpott was the next champion, and Williams won the next two.  However, the "club mentality" had sort of taken over.  Delta's Mini Sprint guys formed a group called the Northern Stars and ran a highly successful tour for several years before giving way to BCRA's Midget Lites.  The Kyle family (Quinn, Dub and Jeff) along with Dale "Hogey" Hogan, formed the Nor Cal Dwarf Car Association in 1993.  One of the first big tracks to run them was Merced Speedway, which actually kept a point race for them.

Another longtime racer and front runner at tracks like Altamont, "The Flyng Roofer" Frank Monroe, built a car and joined Nor Cal, competing at Delta as well.  Frank dreamed big.  He had a knack for building cars and set up the successful M & M Chassis business.  He was also elected president of Nor Cal and would guide that club to heights even the bigger traveling groups had never seen.  Along the way, he was a champion in the club, and others have won championships and many races in his cars.

Meanwhile, Jim Soares, Ray Etherton, Jim Barton and the guys elected to strike out on their own after two seasons at Petaluma.  They formed the Pacific Coast Dwarf Car Association with drivers like Billy Wright, Rick Rogers and Jim Saitone among the leaders.  The group actually caught the eye of a Sprint Car lead foot named Mark Chaves and another fast competitor, Howard Fergerson.  Suddenly, the Northern California area had two Dwarf Car clubs.

The PCDCA preferred to stay in the Bay Area at tracks like Watsonville, San Jose, Antioch and Petaluma.  Monroe and NCDCA attempted to get in the door at Antioch, and the result was some of the best Dwarf Car races ever seen at the track in the mid 1990's.  Among the Nor Cal crowd was a future Sprint Car champion and Chili Bowl winner, Damion Gardner.   Whereas the PCDCA group was content to have their little circuit, the NCDCA drivers wanted to race against the best of the best that Dwarf Car racing had to offer.

The WSDCA was formed, and Monroe became president.  This group was created to unite all of the various groups on the West Coast to promote big blowout Dwarf Car races.  The result was some fields in excess of 100 cars for certain events, and a fun atmosphere in the pits, almost like a big family reunion-barbecue.  WSDCA was about promoting big events and showing off the talented drivers of this division.

As the 1990's neared an end, Eltheron, Barton and Soares stepped away from PCDCA and joined the All Pro Series for dates at Antioch and Petaluma.  Antioch has featured Dwarf Cars every year since, and Petaluma added the class permanently during Jim Soares' run as promoter.  Dwarf Car racing has become common in California with sometimes a half dozen or more tracks running the class on any given weekend.

When Pacific Coast was disbanded, the Bay Area Dwarf Cars became the new group with Watsonville as a home track.  It still exists as the South Bay Dwarf Cars today.  The Nor Cal group is the longest running group in California at over 20 years old, and they call tracks in Marysville, Chico and Placerville their home tracks.  There's no sign of that ending any time soon either.

As Dwarf Car racing has been going on in California for so many years now, you can actually have an entertaining discussion over who is the greatest Dwarf Car driver ever.  Even the Southern California group can make a case with drivers such as the talented Angel Figeroa.  You're not gonna have the debate for too long before Frank Monroe's name comes up, or even Howie Ross.  PCDCA's Billy Wright and Rick Rogers are in the argument, Jim Saitone as well.

Then, there's Mark Chaves, Howard Fergerson, Ricardo Rivera and Mark Squatritto.  Charlie Correia has been racing the class for over 20 years and fields other cars for his friends to drive.  Shawn Jones, Terre Rothweiler and Matt Sargent are others from the Watsonville Area who made a mark.  John Peters, John Barker and Dave Mosier are three stars of Petaluma.  Danny Wagner is in the midst of an attempted threepeat at Antioch.  What's great is that there are so many talented drivers who have raced Dwarf Cars through the years that I'm sure the omission of names in this article will get Dwarf Car fans talking.

The Dwarf Car craze is over 20 years old now, and recently people hit on a new idea to bring in younger drivers.  The Jr. Dwarf Car classes were started for kids in two different age brackets.  These races are run at several Southern California tracks, including Santa Maria, Ventura, Bakersfield and Porterville.  It's a great way to bring new racers into the sport.

What's interesting is that other variations of this class have been brought in to take them out.  There have been Legend Cars, Slingshots and more recently Mod Lites.  Dwarf Cars are still standing, and that doesn't figure to change any time soon.  There's a reason for that.  Many good people are committed to this class, the racing is still good and the fans still enjoy them.  In the end, that's what really matters.

Defending Champion Vogt Back In Winner's Circle At Chowchilla Speedway

Mastering the dry slick conditions from his pole position start, 2014 Chowchilla Speedway champion Josh Vogt won his second straight IMCA Modified Main Event Sunday afternoon at Chowchilla Speedway.  A good field of Northern All Stars Hobby Stocks saw Kevin Joaquin increase his point lead with his second straight victory.

Vogt won the IMCA Modified heat race ahead of Harley Turner.  Meanwhile, Karl Rose would scratch from the heat and start last in the Main Event.  The track at times got a little bit dusty, and there was a scary incident when past champion Randy Brown crashed hard and rolled without injury.  As Vogt led the way, Rose moved up to battle Turner for second.  Rose would eventually make his move into second, but there was no stopping Vogt from grabbing the victory.  Turner settled for third ahead of Michael Shearer, past Modified Mini Stock champion Daniel Luukkenon, Brown, point leader Billy Wilker, Ray Mayer and 2014 Antioch champion Carl Berendsen II.

The Hobby Stocks had two heat races, and Mason Robishaud started his Chowchilla debut off with a win ahead of Shannon Nelson.  Past Chowchilla Mini Stock champion Robbie Loquaci won his heat ahead of Joaquin.  For the Main Event, Joaquin started right behind pole sitter Loquaci, and that was the early battle as last week's Merced feature winner Gary Hildebrand made a charge from ninth starting.  Joaquin would make his move around Loquaci for the lead and would bring it home to an impressive victory.  Hildebrand also got by for second as Loquaci settled for third.  Kode Dean came from tenth to finish fourth as Kristie Shearer rounded out the Top 5.  Nick Lawrence made a race day decision to show up after completing repairs on his car and arrived just before the feature.  He started 12th and came forward to a sixth place finish as Shannon Nelson, Austin Van Hoff, Darren Miguel and Dexter Long completed the Top 10.

The fourth event of the season at Chowchilla Speedway will be on May 3 as IMCA Modifieds and Sport Mods and Northern All Stars Hobby Stocks and Mini Stocks will again be on the card.  For further information, check out the official Oval Motorsports Website.

Victory At Last For Keith Brown Jr. At Chowchilla

It's been a year of ups and downs for third generation racer Keith Brown Jr. as he attempts to run the circuit.  Despite ranking second in IMCA Sport Mod State points going into the weekend, he had no victories.  However, that changed in a big way on Sunday afternoon as he mastered the dry slick conditions for his first win of the season.  Meanwhile, 2014 Antioch Four Banger champion Brent Curran pulled his car out of mothballs and won the 20 lap Mini Stock Main Event.

A competitive 14 car field of Sport Mods ran two heat races, and K. Brown won his heat race ahead of past Chowchilla Hobby Stock champion Chris Falkenberg.  Coming off of his Merced win a night earlier, Rick Diaz again held off IMCA National point leader Fred Ryland to win his heat race.  Brown actually started on the outside second row behind Diaz while Ryland was back in eighth.  As Brown and Diaz mixed it up in the battle for first, Falkenberg was working on another podium finish when contact from behind left him with damaged rear suspension.  K. Brown finally settled the matter with Diaz to score a well earned victory.  Diaz settled for second with Fred Ryland wrapping up a three Top 3 finishing weekend in third.   Natasha Dodd brought it up from 14th starting to a solid fourth place finish ahead of John Gish, Merced point leader Josh Hensley, Mark Squadrito, Marissa Odgers, D.C Brown and John Fore Jr.

Mini Stocks again produced a seven car field, and point leader Chris Corder won the heat race ahead of Jadon Harrington.  Dennis Copus turned the driving duties of the #48 car over to 2012 Merced Mini Stock champion Alex Odishoo.  Odishoo actually led several laps for the Main Event from sixth starting, but a restart provided Curran with all the opportunity he needed to grab the lead.  Once in front, second generation racer Curran brought it home to a satisfying victory.  Harrington grabbed another second as Odishoo settled for third.  Alicia Caldwell and Corder rounded out the Top 5.

The fourth event of the season at Chowchilla Speedway will be on May 3 as IMCA Modifieds and Sport Mods and Northern All Stars Hobby Stocks and Mini Stocks will again be on the card.  For further information, check out the official Oval Motorsports Website.

Motts Gains IMCA Modified Point Lead With Antioch Victory

Gaining the lead after defending champion Carl Berendsen II spun in the second turn, Bobby Motts Jr. went on to score a victory in the 20 lap IMCA Modified Main Event Saturday night at Antioch Speedway.  The win gave Motts the point lead as he sets his sights on the division championship.  Melissa Myers returned after a week off and scored her third 20 lap Northern All Stars Hobby Stock Main Event win.  Point leader Kyle Bakkie led from flag to flag to win the 20 lap Wingless Spec Sprint Main Event.

The IMCA Modifieds had two heat races, and Jeff Thomas won his heat race ahead of Sean O'Gara, suffering a night ending mechanical failure in the process.  Mike Salazar won the other heat race ahead of Chris Elby.  O'Gara and Berendesen shared the front row for the Main Event with Motts starting third and Scott Busby fifth.  Berendsen raced into the lead at the start as O'Gara settled into second ahead of Motts.  Danny Dozier retired early, and Anthony Copeland brought out a yellow flag on lap nine.  Berendsen chose the outside for the restart, and Busby rode the high line into second.  Working lap 11, Berendsen spun in Turn 2 for a yellow flag, and track officials penalized Busby to the rear of the field.  The slightly smoking O'Gara had the lead for the restart, but Motts moved past him when the race resumed.  Salazar settled into third, and O'Gara's night ended as he stalled for a lap 18 caution flag.  Berendsen was fourth for the restart, and an attempt to ride the high line into second was blocked by Salazar.  Motts went on to score the victory ahead of Salazar, Berendsen, Elby and Dustin Himes.

Danny Jones won the first of two Hobby Stock heat races ahead of Myers, but in the process he suffered mechanical issues to end his night early.  Kimo Oreta won the other heat race ahead of Calvin Louis Jr.  Myers had a front row start for the Main Event with Oreta in the second row.  Not surprisingly, Myers raced into the lead at the drop of the green flag ahead of Oreta and Jason Jennings.  Jennings won the previous Main Event after Brian Zachary was later disqualified in tech.  Oreta remained glued to the back bumper of Myers, leaving Jennings all alone in third as Natalie Perry, Michael Cooper and Louis battled for fourth.  Cooper would eventually win that battle, though he was lapped late by the lead duo.  Myers drove a flawless race to score the victory ahead of Oreta and Jennings, the final lead lap finisher.  Cooper grabbed a checkered flag in fourth ahead of Louis, Perry and Frank Furtado.

Bakkie won the lone Wingless Spec Sprint heat race ahead of Ryon Siverling.  Bakkie led the Main Event from the start ahead of Jeremy Newberry and Siverling.  Siverling was challenging Newberry for second, but Marcus Smith and Rick Panfili were right behind him.  On lap 11, Siverling lost third to Smith.  Bakkie held command the rest of the way for the victory ahead of Newberry, Smith, Siverling and Panfili.

Racing continues next week with DIRTcar Late Models and Winged 360 Sprints headlining a program that also includes IMCA Sport Modifieds, Dwarf Cars and Wingless Spec Sprints.  Be sure to check the official Oval Motorsports Website for the latest information.

Wagner, Gustafson Impress With Antioch Victories

Holding off a late attempt by Mike Corsaro to get by, point leader Danny Wagner collected his third Northern All Stars Dwarf Car Main Event win of the season Saturday night at Antioch Speedway.  Two time division champion Mike Gustafson held off point leader Larry Damitz to win the 20 lap Limited Late Model Main Event.

The Dwarf Cars ran three heat races, and Wagner won the first one ahead of Kevin Miraglio.  Jerry Doty won the second heat ahead of Jack Haverty.  The third heat saw young Adam Teves hold off his father, David Teves.  D. Teves was debuting a new car built by the team.  Wagner and Doty shared the front row for the Main Event with Corsro starting fourth.  Wagner raced into the lead at the drop of the green ahead of Doty and Miraglio.  Toby Brown spun in Turn 2 for a lap seven caution flag.  Wagner chose the inside on the restart and continued to lead Doty as D. Teves settled into third.  Teves gained second on lap ten before Miraglio and A. Teves suffered a race ending crash in Turn 4.  Wagner chose the inside again, and D Teves had enough momentum up high to race by for the lead on the back stretch.  However, Wagner prevailed on the inside line through Turns 3 and 4 to regain the lead before the lap concluded.  Robert Coe, Haverty and Miranda Chappa tangled in Turn 4 for a lap 13 yellow flag.  Haverty suffered heavy front end damage in the incident to end his night.  Wagner stayed ahead of D. Teves and Corsaro on the restart, and Corsaro finally managed to get by D. Teves for second on lap 18.  Wagner led a final restart and brought it home to an impressive victory ahead of Corsaro, D. Teves, Doty, Charlie Correia, Chappa, Randy Jahoda and Brian Gray.

The Limited Late Models ran two heat races, and Mark Garner won his heat race in impressive fashion ahead of Jim Freethy.  Mike Hynes won the other heat race ahead of Lori Brown.  Gustafson had the pole for the Main Event with Damitz starting back in eighth.  Gustafson raced into the early lead ahead of Brown and Freethy.  A yellow flag became a red flag when contact sent Garner hard into the Turn 2 wall.  Hynes was black flagged for his part in the incident.  Garner was not injured, but his car sustained heavy front end damage.  Gustafson chose the outside for the restart, and Damitz rode the high line to follow him into second.  Brown maintained third just ahead of Freethy.  Despite heavy pressure, Gustafson drove a flawless race to score his 47th career victory at the track.  Damitz settled for second ahead of Brown and Freethy.  Ryan Chezerian and John Evans were both a lap down in fifth and sixth, respectively.

Racing continues next week with DIRTcar Late Models and Winged 360 Sprints headlining a program that also includes IMCA Sport Modifieds, Dwarf Cars and Wingless Spec Sprints.  Be sure to check the official Oval Motorsports Website for the latest information.

Diaz Impressive In Merced Speedway Sport Mod Victory

Making a charge from the back of the pack, 2014 Merced IMCA Sport Mod champion Rick Diaz scored an impressive victory in their 20 lap Main Event Saturday night.  Marc Key returned to action in the Hobby Stocks and became the seventh different feature winner in eight races.  Robert Alger made his first Mini Stock start of the season a winning one in the 20 lap Main Event.  Jeff Bristow ended up with the Sportsman feature victory after apparent winner Eric Seale was disqualified.

The IMCA Sport Mods had two heat races, and Diaz collected the win in his heat in front of Bruce Nelson.  Jeremy Hoff won the second heat ahead of current IMCA National point leader Fred Ryland.  For the Main Event, Diaz started deep in the 11 car field while Hoff shared the front row with Dwayne Short.  Hoff charged into the early lead as third starter Keith Brown Jr. settled into second.  Diaz was already in fourth by lap three, and a two car crash at the start of the back stretch forced a lap four caution flag.  Hoff chose the outside on the restart and continued to lead Brown as Diaz and Ryland took over third and fourth.  An outside pass on the back stretch of the seventh lap gained Diaz second from Brown.  A stalled car in Turn 4 caused a lap ten caution.  Hoff stayed with the outside for the restart, but Diaz charged past him to take the lead.  Ryland had gained third from Brown and then made a low pass in Turn 2 of the 14th lap to take second from Hoff.  Once in front, Diaz would not be denied as he brought it home to a well earned victory.  Ryland settled for second ahead of Hoff, Nelson, Brown and Short, the final lead lap finisher.

The Hobby Stocks ran two heat races, and Key won the first heat ahead of Kristie Shearer.  George Silva held off point leader Kevin Joaquin to get the win in the second heat race.  Key had the pole for the Main Event, and that was not a position he would give up as he drove a flawless race for the victory.  Joaquin added to his point lead over rookie Jennifer Corder with a sold second place finish ahead of Kristie Shearer.  Two time Hobby Stock champion Andrew Krumm made a surprise visit and finished fourth ahead of past IMCA Modified champion Marshall Weaver, who was piloting the same Josh Hensley car that Darren Miguel won his Main Event with earlier this season.  Shannon Nelson was sixth ahead of Silva, Corder and Dexter Long.  Don Shearer and Steve Rodgers were feature scratches.

Darren Miguel won his Mini Stock heat race ahead of R. Alger.  Kevin Lockerby broke a clutch in his heat and was a Main Event scratch.  Point leader Chris Corder won the other heat ahead of past Watsonville Mini Stock champion Dan McCabe.  Miguel probably thought he might have a shot at winning as he and Corder shared the front row for the feature, but he ended up in seventh in the end.  In fact, Corder couldn't even use the good starting spot for a win .  R. Alger would score the victory with McCabe grabbing a second place finish.  Corder settled for third ahead of Mike Germait and Alicia Caldwell, both of whom were making their first starts.  Joy Alger finished sixth to move into third in the standings.

Point leader Marcus Lung won the Sportsman heat race over Eric Seale.  Seale started on the front row and appeared to collect the feature win, only be be disqualified by officials after the race.  That gave the win to past division point runner up Jeff Bristow.  Lung ended up second ahead of Mike Palmberg and Chris Birdsong.

IMCA Modifieds return next week along with IMCA Sport Mods, Northern All Stars Hobby Stocks and Mini Stocks.  It is also Youth Baseball Night at the races.  That means free admission to one uniformed baseball player with the purchase of one adult ticket.  For more information, check the official Oval Motorsports Website.

Chowchilla, Merced, Antioch and Orland Gear Up For Weekend Of Racing

Orland Race Track Returns As Sacramento Valley Speedway

The newly renamed Sacramento Valley Speedway in Orland is getting ready to open its gates for the 2015 season.  New promoter Adam Zachary threw his hat in the ring late last year to try and keep the racing program alive at the Glenn County Fairgrounds race track.

I'm a little disappointed that Mike McCann's effort from 2013-2014 didn't pay off, because I felt he was trying to do some good things for the track.  A year and a half into the deal, he hit a road block that he couldn't overcome at the fairgrounds.  It's really a shame when people don't even try to work with what you are doing when the goal is to make money for that fairgrounds.

This just happened to be on the night that was to be one of McCann's biggest races, and after that happened, Mike walked away.  Funds were running low, but Mike felt he was nearly turning the corner.  Car count was growing and he'd found himself somebody who could write articles and announce.  He just couldn't overcome obstacles presented by certain people, and he had to walk away.

Mike says that he really felt that this season would have been a good one for the track had he been able to make it happen.  As I said, things were in place, and Mike felt that year three would have been the year it would have been profitable.  As his own car count began to grow, Mike had plans to entertain any cooperation between tracks that would have been beneficial to all tracks involved, and I really feel that he would have been every bit as successful as Paul & Carol Turner were in the long run.

Now, it falls on the new management to try and rebuild things in their core classes.  Hobby Stock and Mini Stock drivers now have a Friday night option in Chico they didn't have a few years ago, and some would be Orland racers run there.  The Mini Trucks are still there, and the Wingless Sprints opened up the rules just a bit under McCann's leadership in an effort to try and attract new drivers.  They continued to be supported pretty much by guys you'd expect.

So, the challenge now is to win the hearts and minds of racers who have been a bit skeptical of the way things have gone since the Turner family walked away from a successful ten year run at the track.  For his part, Zachary held meetings with the racers in December of last year to try and keep everybody on the same page, revealed his plans and announced that the core divisions would be back.  To the Street Stock drivers, he said to bring the cars and maybe something could happen.

Next came a pair of playdays to put the one-fifth mile dirt oval through it's paces and make sure the crew was on the same page.  The dress rehearsals are over, and it's time to go racing on Saturday night.  I'm not sure it was successful, but I did attempt to put something in the paper up there to make sure fans knew racing was back.  My hope is for a good start in all classes and a good season.  It may start out slowly, but if people hang in there, it can get much better.

On this week's card will be Mini Stocks, Mini Trucks, Hobby Stocks and Wingless Sprints.  As I understand it, they will again keep points, which I think is important to establishing a racing program that drivers want to support.  I'm not hearing anything bad so far, and that is a good sign.  Here's a look at the Top 5's in points last year after the six races that were held.

Orland Points 2014

Mini Stocks:  Tom Davis 207, Kenny Brit 160, R. Hunt 141, John Kirkpatrick 94, T. Kirkpatrick 78.

Racing Returns To Chowchilla Speedway On Sunday

It's a little over a month since Chowchilla Speedway held the second of their scheduled ten races this season under Oval Motorsports management, but Sunday will be Round #3 for the fast three-eighths mile dirt oval.  IMCA Modfieds headline a show that also includes IMCA Sport Mods and the Northern All Stars Hobby Stocks and Mini Stocks.  Figuring out who will be in the field is the big mystery.

The record will show that Ryan McDaniel won the big money in January, though there has been no indication that he will be in Chowchilla on Sunday.  2014 Chowchilla and Ventura champion Josh Vogt was the winner of the most recent race and would seem more likely to be there, but even that may not be a guarantee.  Bakersfield area racer Billy Wilker is listed as the point leader by 25 points over McDaniel and Vogt as the only driver to make both races.  Does that mean Billy is gunning for this championship?

It's a good possibility that a double digit car count can be achieved, and also a possibility that the field of cars for this one will include a different roster than what was seen last time.  We know that Antioch is running IMCA Modifieds on Saturday, but Merced has given the division a week off.  However, Santa Maria and Hanford run the class, as does Watsonville and Petaluma.  Jeff Streeter is a local, finished Top 3 last time and could be there on Sunday.

The Wilson's, Alex and Kyle, could be there. Alex is the current IMCA State point leader and Kyle won at Merced last week.  Randy Brown is another local and past track champion, and Jim DiGiovanni, John DiGiovanni and Michael Shearer could also be there.  The key word is could.  On Sunday, the show will go on at Chowchilla, and it should be interesting.  This is a track that has always seen differences in it's rosters from week to week in this division.

With Sport Mods, we know Fred Ryland is coming.  Fred won the big money and trophy in January, which had an influence on him going for the IMCA National championship this season.  He came back in March and won again, and his shadow, Keith Brown Jr., ranks second in points to him at Chowchilla, Antioch and in the State.  Brown, like Ryland, will be attempting a three race weekend that will include Watsonville and Merced.

The hope of Chowchilla really isn't based merely on Merced divers supporting the show or even Antioch drivers.  It's hoped that some local drivers come as well as visitors from other tracks, but since it's Sunday, there's at least a bit of hope of some racers from Hanford, Bakersfield and Watsonville coming out.  Nick Spainhoward finished second in the opener, but he skipped the last race.  Temptation got the better of him, and he came to Merced a couple weeks ago to remind Ryland of who the defending State champion is.  Might he come back on Sunday to try to do it again? A Ryland-Spainhoward shoot out would be entertaining.

Rick Diaz stepped out of the picture at Merced after winning that track's championship in 2014, but he was also a Top 3 driver at Chowchilla last year and is from the area.  Has he been saving his equipment for Chowchilla?  Long time multi division racer Tim Elias is fourth in points and another driver who could be there.  Chris Falkenberg and Marissa Odgers have both said they are coming, and Merced point leader Josh Hensley, Anthony Guiliani, John Gish and John Fore Jr. are others to keep an eye out for.  Car count could at least be in the low double digits for this race.

The Mini Stocks surprised everybody when the drivers braved the cold of January with a 14 car field to run for trophies.  Chris Corder opened the season with a feature win and is now the point leader.  Darren Miguel missed that race, but he won in March, a race that saw track officials run the race in the opposite diction.  While Miguel will have to work his way up the points ladder, Mike Congdon is listed as 18 points back in second, two ahead of the tied Joy Alger and Jennifer Corder.  Corder has made her Hobby Stock the priority this year and parked her Mini Stock a few weeks back.  It's hard to make a guess on car count as 14 cars were there in January and seven in March.  A good estimation is 6-10 cars.

Likewise, the Hobby Stocks didn't exactly shoot out of the gate with four cars on opening day.  One driver not there on opening day, Nick Lawrence, has already said he's coming, and it's a good bet that Kevin Joaquin will be there to try to back up his March victory.  Top 3 2014 competitor Austin Van Hoff is second in points ahead of Dexter Long and J. Corder, and this trio could be on hand.  Beyond that, it's speculation.  Could Shearer Racing have one of their cars out there?  Last year's champion, Shane Hausmann, hasn't been racing this year, and we haven't seen local racer Kode Dean in a Hobby Stock since last year.  A good guess would be 6-10 cars, but rules were adjusted in the hopes of getting cars from Bakersfield and Watsonville.

Plenty Of Excitement At Merced Speedway

Sixteen miles north and on Saturday night, Merced Speedway is having a four division show with IMCA Sport Mods and Northern All Stars Hobby Stocks, Mini Stocks and Valley Sportsman cars.  In recent weeks, we've seen the debut of several cars in all divisions, but keeping them coming back has presented a bit of a challenge.  The potential is there for a noticeable increase in car count, and last week was one of the better car counts of the season.

Points have been a bit of a mystery, and even after the recent release of the point standings, there are some questions about accuracy.  Josh Hensley is listed as the point leader in Sport Mods, and that shouldn't be in dispute.  The rookie is the one with the best attendance.  Despite his terrible recent luck, Josh is well in command of the point lead at this stage of the game.  The order behind him is still in question as Mark Odgers and past Sport Mod champion Neill Barcellos are listed as second and third.  Odgers wasn't planning to be there anyway, but the team will field a car in Chowchlla.  Barcellos is a possibility, though he hasn't confirmed that.

Again, Fred Ryland and Keith Brown Jr. are planning to come in from Antioch to continue their battle, if you can call it that.  "Fast Freddy" has nine victories so far this season, while Brown is still looking for his first of the year.  He did have a strong third place finish at Antioch last week in a car he put a new body on.  Antioch rookie Tim Hammett is another possibility for this show, and it's anticipated that Dwayne Short will be there after his Top 5 run last week.  Short also finished third in his Hobby Stock.

With the revolving door of drivers in this class, we really don't know who else night be there, though we're guessing D.C. Brown can't wait to come back after an impressive drive from the back to second last week behind equally impressive winner Gary Tucker.  If we are fortunate enough to see Bruce "Bubba" Nelson or Jeremy Hoff in action, we know the competition level just went up.  What is interesting to note is that over 40 drivers have competed at Merced this season as of this week, and we still feel a turnout in the 8-12 car range is a reasonable estimation.

The list of feature winners in Hobby Stocks continues to grow with the addition of Gary Hildenrand to the list last week.  To date, only point leader Kevin Joaquin has two wins, and yet he has to wonder why he can't build up a bigger lead over the rookie Jennifer Corder.  At this point, Corder is still looking for her first win, but she has beat Joaquin to the line for two straight weeks.  Kevin DNF'ed two weeks ago and was fifth behind Corder last week.  It's only a a matter of time before that #97 car is back up front again.

The list of Hobby Stock drivers to race at least once this year is as impressive as Sport Mods as over 40 drivers have competed after seven races, and yet we've yet to see more than ten cars at any of the point season events.  However, the potential is there for that to change in a big way.  Last week, Austin Van Hoff had a good night with a heat win and second in the feature to inch his way into tenth in the standings behind Darren Miguel.  Miguel does have a feature win, but it's unknown if he will race a Hobby Stock when he's already likely to be there in his Mini Stock to go for three straight wins.

Dexter Long and George Silva were both in action last week and are currently fourth and fifth, respectively, in the standings.  If Ty Shelton skips another race, then one or both of these drivers could move by the third place competitor.  As for what car count may look like this week, we're thinking 8-12 cars is a good bet.  They're gonna get more than ten cars some time.  The question is, when?  Past Antioch champion Brad Myers dropped a hint that may suggest that he will be at Merced on Saturday, which would make things all the more interesting as he is definitely a fast competitor at Antioch.

Chris Corder has to be asking himself where Darren Miguel came from.  Miguel has hit the Mini Stocks like a tidal wave and has proven himself to be fast no matter what direction they run these cars.  Miguel is four points behind the defending champion and closing fast.  Corder was second last week, however, and people should know that he can strike for another victory at any given race.  Saturday night could be his night to shine.

Kevin Lockerby finished third again last week, but he has revealed that funds are getting low and he could disappear this week.  We've heard that Dennis Copus is also looking for sponsorship, so Lockerby and Copus are two good racers who would do a sponsor proud if given a chance.  Kevin is also the 1999 Little Truck champion at Merced and has been determined to put that #54 car into the winner's circle this year.  He also has the steady Joy Alger running just ten points behind him, so he'll have to be on his game to hold onto third in points.

The Mini Stocks have been known to have the big car count this season, and they had 12 cars last week, including a few surprises.  Dennis Keldsen came in from the Watsonville area, but he ended up last behind Petaluma visitor Kelly Campanile.  Again, Campanile's night started off well with a second place heat race finish, but it went down hill from there.  Rapidly improving Natalie Waldrop was seventh in the Main Event and is within striking distance of Copus for fifth in the standings now.  As far as what car count may be, it could be in the 8-12 range once again.  Mini Stocks have had slightly more loyal support than the other classes so far this season.

The question remains, where are the Sportsman cars?  For the first time this year, points have been added for all attempts to race this year.  It's not a big surprise to find that Marcus Lung is the point leader, though it's a bit closer than expected at four points ahead of Eric Seely.  Since Kenny Birdsong and Chris Birdsong have split duties in their car, Kenny is third in the points, and Jeff Bristow should be listed in fourth, 22 points out of the lead.  Only five cars have competed so far, which is only a fraction of the cars that are actually out there.  So, a prediction on car count for this race would probably be in the 2-4 car range.  Hopefully, they surprise us with more.

Five Divisions Come To Antioch Speedway

Back at Antioch Speedway, IMCA Modifieds are headlining a show that also features the Northern All Stars Limited Late Models, Hobby Stocks, Wingless Spec Sprints and Dwarf Cars.  The track seems to be hovering right at the 12 car per division mark when you average out the total cars every week, and it should be near that again for this Saturday's action packed show.

The question about Nick DeCarlo will be answered on Saturday.  He won the Petaluma IMCA Modified title last year, and that track will run the division.  Will Nick stay at Antioch and fight to hold onto his lead, or head to Petaluma?  Terry DeCarlo has already revealed that Nick could opt to race elsewhere if the purse is big enough.  If not, he'll be at his chosen home track.  Only two people are right there with the second generation racer.  That would be Scott Busby, who is nine points back, and Bobby Motts Jr., who is trailing by 12 points.

Busby hasn't seriously competed for an Antioch championship since he won the final NASCAR sanctioned championship in 1997, though he has ranked second since then despite missing races.  Nobody has won more Main Events in this division's 25 year history than Busby, and he added another win two races ago.  Busby himself hasn't really declared an intent to race or points, though he has said he plans to make most of the races.  For now, all we can do is watch from week to week and see what develops, but this three car battle would be very entertaining if it continues to the end of the season.

Terry Kaiser is a bit of a surprise running fourth in points in his "General Lee" #01 car.  Behind him would be four time champion Troy Foulger.  Though Troy could probably claw his way back into contention after skipping a race, it seems more likely that he'll run when he feels like it and focus on the Late Model.  Last time out, he won the Main Event, and there's no reason not to expect the Bowers Racing #49 car at Antioch this week.

"The Superstar" Mike Salazar just made it known that the #29 car is ready for action this week, which is good news for the fans but bad news for the competitors.  A past Top 3 point runner, Mike will be near the front if the car is running right.  Another past Top 3 driver, Sean O'Gara, is a Top 10 competitor this year and should also be in action.  A field of 10-14 cars is anticipated, and others to watch for include, Chris Elby, Carl Berendsen II, Josh Combs and Clay Twigg.

Last week, Melissa Myers did what was rumored to be coming and skipped a race.  At the time, she was second in Hobby Stock points behind two time defending champion Kimo Oreta.  Oreta managed a sixth place finish last week, while rival Nick Baldwin was third.  Now, Oreta leads Baldwin by just two points in the standings.  These two drivers have proven to be very fast this year and have both won Main Events.  What has hurt them both is that the previous winner must start in the back of the pack a week later, and frequently this division has had no yellow flags this season.

That was the case last week as Jason Jennings and Brian Zachary battled fiercely for that feature win.  If not for motor issues that were slowly developing in his smoking #42j car, Jennings might have won the race.  As it was, Zachary passed him on lap 19, and Jason's engine caught fire after the checkered flag.  No word on whether he'll be ready for this race, but Zachary may be chomping at the bit to go for a second straight win aboard Jim Freethy's fast #99 car.

For several laps, young Jordan Swank impressed with a third place run in the blue #73 car.  The track was hooked up, if still a bit wet, and Swank lost third with a contact pass that dropped him to the back of the pack.  Still, his effort to that point shows that the second generation racer is getting more confidence and getting comfortable in his Hobby Stock.  Given that he was second in Four Banger points last season, that's not really a surprise.

When Swank fell back, Baldwin was able to claim third, while Jeremy Jennings and Calvin Louis Jr. rounded out the Top 5.  Jennings is now seventh in points with Louis and Zachary just two points behind him.  Further up front, Danny Jones moved into a tie with Swank for fifth in points after his heat win and seventh place feature finish.  The duo are both just 16 points behind Michael Cooper in the battle for fourth.  Estimations are for a 10-12 car field again this week, which could be more depending on whether certain drivers decide to come out.

Car count was down for the last Limited Late Model show, and now we have two regulars, John Keith and Peggy Sue Jarred, who have been dealing with motor problems.  No word on whether either of them will have things together for Saturday night.  It seems you can't keep Larry Damitz away from the track.  While one of his rivals was off in Merced winning again, Larry was crewing for the man who won the Late Model race at Antioch, Paul Guglielmoni.  Larry was proud of Paul's effort and has offered help to him through the years.

The rest of the pack may need help catching that orange and blue #15 car as Damitz has won two of the three races so far.  Despite that, Mike Hynes is only two points behind the defending champion going into Saturday.  Consistency is the key as Hynes has two seconds and a third so far.  Last week, Mike finally got to run a full Late Model feature after two scratches, and he ended up taking a checkered flag in sixth.  He'll be out to see if he can do anything about getting a Limited Late Model win this week.

Now that he knows he has a pretty good grip on the Merced point lead, Mark Garner wants to see if he can do anything about the Antioch point standings.  His last Antioch start is something he'd rather forget, but Mark is still just 14 points out of the lead.  Garner is a four time feature winner on the circuit.  Only six points behind him is two time division champion Mike Gustafson.  The division's all time winner pitted during the last race with mechanical woes but should be back to try again this week.  It wasn't a good week for 2013 champion Jim Freethy either.  After two spins in the Main Event, Jim was done, but he'll be back to try and set things right this week.   Estimations are for an 8-10 car turn out this week.

Dwarf Cars seem to be good for 12-14 cars per race, and one of the cars you'll usually find near the front of the pack is the #11d of two time defending champion Danny Wagner.  Danny didn't win last week, but he did chase the winner, Adam Teves, to the checkered flag and that gave him an eight point lead over David Teves, who had spun out of the lead about halfway through the last race.  Having won last week, young A. Teves gets to try and make a move from deep in the pack this week.  It will be interesting to see what he can do.

Mike Corsaro is still trying to make up for some bad luck a couple races ago, but the 2014 point runner up is only 12 points behind A. Teves for third.  In fact, Thomas Leiby and one time winner Jack Haverty are both within 20 points of A. Teves for third.  What's interesting is that this division seems to have the most loyal support of regulars at the track so far, and the roster increased by two last week with the addition of rookie Toby Brown and Dillon Hume.

Dwarf Cars have been racing at Antioch Speedway for over 20 seasons now, and they usually put on a good show for the fans.  There are drivers making their first move into racing in this class, which can ultimately lead them to other divisions.  Last week, Miranda Chappa made some good laps and grabbed a lead lap checkered flag in tenth place.  Tim Reeder was running in the Top 10 until a crash entering Turn 3 ended that.  That was still better than David Rosa could manage.  Mechanical problems in hot laps ended David's night in disappointment.

There was plenty of disappointment to go around in Wingless Spec Sprints last week.  No less than four cars were caught up in an early crash, and the night ended for three of them.  Alan Miranda ended up flipping after getting together with Kyle Bakkie, and James East was also out after that.  Bakkie and Miranda were first and fourth, respectively, in the standings.  Though that hasn't changed, Bakkie is now feeling the pressure up front.  Rick Panfili got a flat tire in the melee, but he managed a fifth place finish to stay within ten points of Bakkie.

Panfili may be Bakkie's chief challenger this season as Roy Fisher has indicated that he will probably miss some races this year.  Prior to winning his second feature of the season, Roy indicated that being in the Top 5 would be enough for him, and that he also intends to break out his Winged 360 Sprint Car for some racing in the weeks ahead.  The point race could get very interesting, though Bakkie might seem to have the advantage as last year's point runner up.

Panfili has never won a Main Event in his career, but he's coming off of a third place season in 2014.  There's every indication that Rick could win this year, but Miranda, who sits 26 points back, is also looking fast enough to win.  Not to be forgotten in the mix is rookie Marcus Smith, who is 30 points back.  You might have gotten the impression that he's out there just making his laps, but Smith surprised everybody by finishing third in the Main Event last week.

That spot belonged to third generation racer Jimmy Perry III, but motor issues left the #21p car stalled on the back stretch.  The team has had a few bugs to work out in their two appearances, but there's no doubt they are up to the challenge.  Jimmy's not a past champion for nothing.  As it was, Perry and then Smith were chasing another surprise runner, Ryon Siverling.  Siverling drove an outstanding race from start to finish and was rewarded with a career best second place finish.  Ryon is 36 points behind Smith in the battle for fifth.

The return of Chase Wood Jr., James East and a surprise visit from former 49ers and Raiders offensive lineman Jeremy Newberry helped give the Spec Sprints ten cars.  Newberry impressed with a heat race win and ran a close fourth in the feature.  Wood made it to the checkered flag for a sixth place finish as he continues to learn the ropes in a Spec Sprint.  Estimations are that car count could be in the 8-10 car range again.

With Antioch, Merced and Chowchilla Speedways all in action, it's sure to be an exciting weekend of racing.  Chowchilla offers the Sunday option for the Saturday night racers who didn't get enough racing.  For more information on these three tracks, check the official Oval Motorsports Website.

And Furthermore...

A Figure 8 race will happen in California in July.  Actually, three Figure 8 races, and they will happen in Alameda County at the annual Alameda County Fair on July 3-5.  Sunnyside Promotions is offering perks.  They are paying drivers to come compete, and the offer includes $400 and also $225 in six pit passes, good for fair admission.  The value comes to $625 in total.

The promoter wants 6-7 cars and it's open to anything from Mini Stocks to Hobby Stocks.  It's basically an exhibition before the main attraction Destruction Derby. They're not even looking for hard contact in the X, but rather just a show for the fans.  The flier went up on Tuesday night on the Sunnyside Promotions page and can be viewed HERE.   If you are wondering what a Figure 8 like this looks like, do a YouTube search for Hoagland Figure 8.

Earlier this year, Placerville Speedway was making a big announcement about their four race  Placerville POSSE 360 Sprint Car series.  The sponsor for the series actually put money up for the Limited Late Model and Pure Stock winners on those nights as well, meaning all three divisions are racing for extra money.  The track has reaffirmed its commitment to all three regular divisions, including $2000 championships for the Pure Stock and Limited Late Model divisions this year.

It's no surprise that the season opener had so many cars in the Pure Stock division that they needed a B Main.  The Sprints did well as usual, and the Limited Late Models have a few more competitors this year.  The first Placerville POSSE race was last Saturday, and next week is the next race.  The three divisions are joined by the NorCal Dwarf Cars this week.  By the way, for those curious, Colby Weisz (360 Sprint Cars), Ryan McDaniel (Limited Late Models) and Dan Jinkerson (Pure Stocks) were the feature winners on Placerville POSSE Night last week.  The increased prize money for the three winners paid $2000, $750 and $500, respectively

Not to be outdone, Petaluma Speedway just announced a partnership with PitStopUSA.Com for the Pit Stop USA Shootout for the 360 Sprint Cars.  This four race series will pay $2000 to win each race and has a $1000 championship for the series.  The winners get to compete in a Ten Lap Dash For Cash on October 18th.  The four races will be on June 6th, July 25th, August 15th and September 12th.

In the meantime, the 360 Sprints are back this week.  The first race was won by Andy Forsburg ahead of Bradley Terrell and Brett Rollag.  Terry Schank Jr. led Joe Stornetta and Klint Simpson for the Top 3 finish in the season opener for the Spec Sprints, which are back this week.  IMCA Modifieds make their season debut this week as Mini Stocks and Dwarf Cars are also on the card.  It should be an exciting and action packed show.

Sprint Cars are not on the card at Ocean Speedway in Watsonville this Friday night, but the IMCA Modifieds are in town to headline a show that includes IMCA Sport Modifieds, American Stocks, Four Bangers and Dwarf Cars. The season opener was interesting.  Bobby Hogge IV won, which is not a surprise.  It was a bit of a surprise that 2014 champion Kenny Nott and Jim Pettit II were absent.  The American Stocks are coming back strong and had about 18 cars last time.  Joe Joe Willoughby won that race, but this competitive field is sure to have several different winners this season.  Terre Rothweiler will be going for his second straight win in Dwarf Cars on Friday and Four Bangers are also on the card.

Late Models are back at Bakersfield Speedway on Saturday.  Enough said...

Seriously, the Late Models headline a show that includes the Hobby Stocks, American Stocks, CDCRA Dwarf Cars and NMRA TQ Midgets.  The Late Models make monthly appearances at Bakersfield throughout the season.  The first visit by the class saw Bobby Hogge IV win.  Will he return for more, and can he win?  It should be a good show.  The Hobby Stocks and American Stocks have proven to be entertaining this season as well, and this is sure to be a crowd pleasing event.

Porterville's Rocky Hill Speedway continues their bi-weekly schedule with Mini Stocks, Super 4's, Hobby Stocks, American Stocks, Central Valley Tanks and Go Karts on the card.  Central Valley Tank is actually just the title sponsor on what is actually the IMCA Stock Car division, which brought a half dozen cars last time as the track joins Bakersfield and Kings Speedway in hosting this division.  Mini Stocks have been the big car count and a crowd pleaser, but there has also been enough Super 4's and Hobby Stocks so far to make things interesting.  Jarred Plumlee sets his sites on three straight Mini Stock wins this week, but Roy Atchison, Zak Westlake, Clinton Massey and the rest of the pack will have something to say about that.
