The Editor's Viewpoint

I'm going to be briefer with this column than I usually am. I've been a bit overwhelmed with moving my stuff, and it definitely caught up with me. I haven't really talked a lot about what's going on in my life these days, but I have a new trailer. I'm still located in the same area for now, but what this does is increases the possibility of relocating. I don't want to say too much about that or get my hopes up high. I haven't had a lot of things in my life that give me reason to be optimistic, but you never know.

The trailer gives me a place to stay should I be able to relocate somewhere. There are pros and cons to this, which I'm not going to get into in this racing column. My move into this trailer was necessitated by some changes to the current situation. I might have had a week or two to time this out differently, but I figured why prolong it?

Therefore, I had to plan to move all of my stuff and still be able to keep writing and posting on the blog. For a couple of days, it seemed like it was working out well. I even did the previous post, which was a Friday night racing action recap. I spent Saturday taking my notes as if I would do another post a few days later, but things got overwhelming.

I might have settled in and did the post. I have no workstation at the moment, and it's not particularly comfortable or conducive to me getting writing done. However, if not for the fact that I lacked a stable and reliable internet connection, I might have gone ahead and tried to put something up.

I wasn't going to fight and struggle to make it happen, so I instead focused on moving things around and trying to get a little bit more comfortable while I worked on a solution to my internet issue. I fully intended to cover all of the action from that weekend, which I have managed to do with this big post. This particular post has everything but the kitchen sink in it.

The good news is I'm settling in a little bit. I'm still not particularly comfortable, nor do I have a workstation I feel good about. The internet, however, is reaching me. It still wasn't ideal, and that left covering last Saturday's stuff challenging and a bit problematic. Somehow, I managed to keep it together to take notes.

I am hoping for things to be a bit more comfortable and to be able to settle in to a routine. I must say that if it doesn't get just a little bit better, I could pull the plug on the weekly media effort. I won't pull the plug on the blog, but keeping to a weekly schedule may just go out the window.

The problem with this racing media effort still comes down to lots of time put into each post. I have made an effort to make it a little easier on myself, but it's only been slightly easier in terms of the workload I put on myself in the previous few years. The other issue is complete lack of support. People don't generally do the kind of work I do on this blog without being financially rewarded in some way.

I don't do subscriptions here, I'm not getting paid by any race track and the tip jar has been empty since the very beginning of this year. I have been basically focusing on doing this to keep the hit count up as best I can in the hopes that the monetization I put on this site six years ago will finally pay off. At the current rate, I don't know if I'll see a dime from that before the end of the year.

I go back and forth on whether I want to continue to bother with the racing scene. I have an offer to consider, and I'm discovering a little bit more about that. The problem is, it would require me to jump back into something that I think is a relic of the past. As much as some of us long time racing enthusiasts might like the idea of printed media, I just don't know that it's a feasible thing to consider.

In my mind, there's only one reason for me to consider doing it, and that reason I will keep to myself at this time. It comes down to being happy and putting myself in the best position to be happy. Sometimes that seems like more of a struggle than it should be.

At any rate, I'm not here to rant or cry about anything going on in my life. I feel okay, and I just need to make the best of things. The decisions I make now will go a long way to determining how the future is going to go. Right now, I am going to try to maintain the weekly media effort. It would be very nice to see some sort of financial reward for the effort, because I don't know how long I'll be able to maintain this otherwise.

In the back of my mind, I still think about books. Though the workstation I have right now isn't super comfortable, I could make it work. I wouldn't be under the weekly deadlines I'm under now. You don't want to take too long between posts when you are attempting to cover the weekly news, and I'm pushing it by including racing news from two weeks ago with last week's news.

It's kind of funny that I think about how I could do the printed media and maintain it from home. With reliable internet, I could sit at my desk and gather notes and write several articles, but I don't think that's a feasible plan. If I were to get into doing printed media, I would need to get some help from actual writers who are on the scene at various tracks. They can offer that little bit more color than I'm able to give. Plus, when you're writing 10 or a dozen articles every weekend, getting everything done before print deadline isn't so easy. At best, I'd be somebody writing two or three race review articles every week. I don't know that it would be worth it.

In general, I'm looking around at the numbers at various tracks. Car count hasn't been spectacular this year. We knew the numbers weren't going to be like they were last season, when you'd have a track be the only show in town and you could get a huge field of competitors.

For instance, Antioch Speedway will be having the Big Kahuna Freedom Series race this weekend. This two-day affair produced 150 cars last year, and they might be lucky to get just half of that total. One reason is that Bakersfield Speedway is running this weekend, and they are offering an even bigger purse than Antioch.

I know that promoters aren't realistically expecting to have the kinds of numbers in the pits they had last year. They knew they would take a hit, and they certainly have. There have been a few car counts that I've noticed that have made me wonder if a promoter was questioning whether they should even open the gates. I had a hunch we were going to see numbers drop as people deal with finances and other things caused by what we are trying to come out of this year.

Though things aren't as dire as they looked last year, this is not a normal year. Everybody's hoping that we've laid the groundwork this year to get back to what we think of as normal in 2022. I think we should all be hopeful, but you never know what is around the corner. At least all of the tracks are racing, and every place is able to have at least some fans in attendance, regardless of whatever rules might be put in place by county health officials.

I have to hand it to the team out at Southern Oregon Speedway. They've certainly generated a lot of buzz and excitement ahead of this weekend's grand reopening. There are some things that I wish they would shut up about. There are personal attacks being made that I think are unwarranted against the previous management. I could say more or even go negative in this column, but I'm trying to hold back. I'm certainly going to have plenty to say about some things at the appropriate time, but I think now is the time to watch and hope for the best for racing.

I know people are thinking that all of the big improvements being made to that facility are the magic bullet solution to fix everything. They certainly aren't going to hurt the cause, but whether they give them the kinds of numbers I hear people talking about remains to be seen. It certainly helps that all of the money being spent on these various things isn't coming from just one person.

If you're asking one person to spend tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars on something that they won't see a return on for years, you're going to have a hard time getting that one person to invest. John Skinner certainly wasn't opening his wallet during his last decade in charge of that track.

People have commented on the state of decay at the facility, and I won't say they are wrong. I will say the decay was noticeable long before Skinner exited. I think in John you had somebody who felt he spent a lot of money building the place, which he did. He simply wanted to be able to collect on his investment, which he certainly did in his 20 years at the place. For all the people talking about needing a local person to run that race track as if that's the only way it could possibly happen, where exactly does John Skinner live? Think about that.

With the promoter, you have to understand how business works. In any business designed to generate revenue, you don't want to spend more money than you take in. That's simple mathematics. The strategy the previous management used was to improve the show on the race track as a way to get fans to want to come back and spectate. It was used as a way to get more cars, and guess what?

You can look over the numbers, and anybody but a bold-faced liar will admit that the racing program itself was improved from 2016 until the final checkered flag in 2019. There's every indication that 2020 would have seen more improvement had it not been for the pandemic.

I know there are people going around saying the track should have opened with no fans. It's easy for somebody to suggest that when it's not their money being invested. Most of the tracks lost a bundle running with no fans, and racing simply could not survive if that was the way forward. If it makes people feel good to bash previous management that they didn't open and that the covid-19 situation ultimately led to them departing, then fine. There's your bad guy.

Those Late Models you have on the schedule for the season opener are only there because he added them to the roster. The Sprint Cars that are there now? Same deal. But if it makes you feel good to say that he did everything bad, then lie to yourself and say it. You only have yourself to convince.

I could choose to go negative towards certain people opening their mouths and going negative about the previous management. It's deeply personal to me. I may not have agreed 100% with that management's decisions, but I know the intent was always to improve the place. I think the new management has lofty goals and certainly had a game plan that they put into motion the minute they could get through the gates.

You can't really find anything negative to say about the improvements being made to the facility, and I wouldn't even try. You want to see improvements made to any race track as you're hoping that it will ensure the longevity of the track.

The lie that Southern Oregon Speedway was somehow in danger of closing permanently bothers me. The media is running with it as is the current managerial team. On one level, it's just a lie. The county would have put it out to bid, and somebody would have gone after it. If the current team hadn't won, there were three other people interested in stepping forward.

Therefore, Southern Oregon Speedway was never, and let me repeat, never going to close. It was simply seeing a change in management. The vilification of previous management in the media is just a bunch of BS in my opinion.

The only reason I can think of to perpetuate the lie that's being told is to create an "us against the world" type of mentality. You have to vilify the people who were there before you in order to justify what you're doing now. It gives everybody on the new team something to compare themselves to. If they're creating this sort of ambience around the track, then the racers and the fans can even join in and hate the previous management.

Hey, if that ultimately helps improve the numbers in the stands and the pits and creates a big return on the investment, then good for them. Is that what's going to happen? We need time to see.

Ultimately, Southern Oregon Speedway should be fine. Whether me or anybody agrees 100% with what the new management does is of no importance. If they are going out there and opening the gates and keeping the show going, that's what matters. Whether they are there for a year, 10 years or what have you, they are having their turn to show everybody how it's done.

Whether they do things better than has ever been done there before will remain to be seen, but at the very least I would hope they don't do it so badly that the place closes for good. Given the location, I don't think Southern Oregon Speedway is on the endangered list just yet, so racing will continue.

When you hit Memorial Day weekend, it used to be that tracks figured they would get bigger car counts and fan attendance. However, more and more families are using the weekend to go on vacation. Considering what we've just been through, there could be families taking that option. The other thing is you have tracks that are limited in how many people they can have. I'm not so sure that every track being told to limit attendance is actually following the rules, and I personally don't care.

What we've been through over the last year is bs, but if they can get away with it, we'll be going through it again. Our sport can't keep weathering that sort of storm, and if you think promoters should continually open the race tracks without fans, all I can tell you is it's a recipe for disaster.

I had written an Editor's Viewpoint that was to go in the post that never made it up. I'd like to make a few points from that column in this column if I can do it succinctly. I don't want to add another hour to the editing time as Thursday is going to be spent editing quite a bit. The post will never go up if I go overboard.

I'm watching the Midget racing scene in California with a bit of interest. When they had the BCRA/USAC Midgets show at Petaluma a couple of weeks ago, I will be honest when I say I didn't like the Western Midget Racing group being added to the program with their own show. While the Ecotec Midgets might not be quite as fast as the regular Midgets, I do feel that if they were going to be a part of that program they should have ran them with the other group.

The problem is that instead of having a show that might have had 20 or more Midgets, you had a dozen of the WMR cars and 10 of the BCRA/USAC cars. They diluted the product. The WMR is definitely going to shake things up. If you haven't been paying any attention, they are growing in car count. At the rate we are seeing them grow, it's not out of the realm of possibility that these guys will have 20 cars at some point in 2022. I have to believe that John Prentice at Watsonville and Jim Naylor at Ventura feel pretty good about getting on board with this thing when Mike McCluney pitched the idea a few years ago.

Because BCRA has been diddling around with pavement and dirt, they've diluted their own roster to the point where they have a hard time getting a car count. We've had a couple of BCRA dirt shows, and they are struggling to be able to get 10 cars. I still feel like focusing on dirt could be their best bet when it comes to getting their numbers back up, but is it getting to a point where it's too late to save this deal? I hope not. Having joint shows between the BCRA and USAC is a smart move.

USAC has its own problem right now with the West Coast 360 Sprint Cars. I know Doug Lockwood came on board at the end of last year in the hopes of sparking some life in this deal, but I'm sure he's aware that there are problems. They are having a hard time getting a double digit car count, and it won't last for long if they can't fix this.

I know the Hunt Wingless people are looking at injected 360s as the way to go, but they might want to rethink getting too stupid with their rules. As it is now, they are getting numbers in the 30s, and that makes them a really good option for promoters looking for a big Sprint Car show while not paying injected 360 Sprint Car purse money.

The one thing that bodes well for the future of the different types of Sprint Car and Midget racing is the strength of the current Wingless 600 Micro Sprint class. This division is doing so well that quarter-mile and bigger tracks are even looking at adding the division to their lineup. Orland Raceway is doing something, and Petaluma is able to generate double-digit counts at most of their shows. You tend to get younger drivers getting started in this class, and those drivers are often looking to move up to the bigger stage of Sprint Car and Midget racing.

However, the numbers are doing so well at tracks like Dixon Speedway that the Wingless 600 Micros are a show unto themselves. They don't tend to get less than 30 cars at their regular shows in Dixon these days, and they had 39 last time out. They are doing a special Wingless Nationals event this weekend in memory of Grandma Pam, and the sign up had 50 drivers the last time I checked. One of the biggest reasons why is the $5,000 to win prize. Even second is $3,000 to win, and taking a green flag assures you at least $200 at the pay window. I've been enjoying monitoring the action at Dixon, and these Wingless Micros are certainly enjoyable to watch.

The Stockton Dirt Track canceled a Modified show a few weeks back, and it looks like they are doing the same thing for the show booked on the second weekend of June. I'm not sure what it is Tony is dealing with there, but I know canceling the show had to hurt a little bit. With Antioch and Merced not running the IMCA Modified classes that night, there's every indication that they would have had good numbers in Stockton for the unsanctioned show.

The Memorial Day open will show on the pavement at Stockton 99 Speedway was also canceled, but that's a no-brainer. Other than the Legends of Pacific, you can't get cars to support any of the other open wheel classes.

I know Tony is high on the Tri State Pro Stock Challenge Series, and I can't blame him. Roy Bain has done such an amazing job in creating this deal that he has gotten every promoter that has a similar class to look at his rules. I still think there's a ways to go in figuring out what a Pro Stock truly is in terms of universal rules, but the Tri State idea was the best starting point in my opinion.

I will be curious to see how things go with the Billy Geyer Memorial race in Yreka this weekend. The numbers haven't been as big as I hoped for this year, but they've still been good. I fully expect a car count in the 20s for this one, and I'm happy that Yreka is getting another good show. They haven't done too badly this year all things considered, and I'm glad they are benefiting from the excitement that is the Tri State Pro Stock Challenge Series.

The Tri State Pro Stocks have been affected by schedule adjustments. Antioch Speedway had the opportunity to add a May 22nd Flat Track Bike race, and all indications are that the show went well last week. They took the show that was originally booked on May 22nd and moved it to the empty June 12th date. The track's Super Stock division was included in the move, which unfortunately meant that Antioch was booked on top of the Tri State weekend action at Susanville on June 12th and 13th. One of those dates was originally going to be a Cedarville date, but that has been canceled for this year.

I know Roy would like to see cooperation with these deals, but sometimes things happen. He was able to work out a scheduling conflict on August 14th as Medford had the Rocky Nash Memorial race booked against a Petaluma race that night that the Tri State Series was scheduled for. The Nash race now happens at the end of July, and that means Petaluma and Southern Oregon Speedway both win in that deal. The Tri State Series is all about providing the best Pro Stock racing possible on any night they are booked, and that means delivering good car count as well as racing.

I do wish Chad Chadwick had looked at what was going on the night of June 12th. He has the Hardtops booked, but the California Hardtop Association had long since set a date for Orland Raceway. As that group tends to cancel races that are above 103°, they were hoping that the June 12th date in Orland wouldn't be too hot. That was the reason for the June booking. I've been told that the Sacramento area CHA loyalists will be in Orland that night, and I wholeheartedly endorse them supporting that show. Because of the conflict, I don't know that they'll have more than half-dozen cars there, but that should be fine.

Antioch seems to be the track leading the way in having the Hardtops running together with the Merced Valley Sportsman class, and I'm hearing indications that June 12th should have a double-digit count that night. I couldn't tell you for sure, but it seems like there could be at least one new Hardtop that night from at least a half-dozen of them, plus whatever Sportsman drivers might come in from Merced.

As I've been saying for a few years now, it's up to the Bay Area leadership and the CHA leadership to keep themselves organized. Though the intent might not be to book on top of each other, sometimes it can happen. Therefore, you'd better make sure you can deliver something whenever you're booked.

The only other point I wanted to make here was about the Antioch Speedway Hall of Fame. I don't know that I agree with some of the ways things have been done this year, but I do know I had my turn at the helm. Chris Briggs is doing good things, and he's not sitting idly by. He's getting people involved with this, and there's been plenty of great buzz.

The one concern I had about a certain name missing from this year's inductees list was solved when the seventh person announced turned out to be Scott Busby. Without any thought whatsoever, Scott is the no brain first choice for a person being inducted from the 1990s. How could he not be when you look at his body of work?

The Antioch Speedway Hall of Fame this year will include Marv Wilson, Lonnie Williams, Bobby Hogge III, Steve Hendren, Don Shelton, Debbie Clymens and Busby. I don't think there's anybody on that list who lacks the credentials. They are all worthy. I still would have liked to have seen at least one person known as a behind the scenes factor at the track getting inducted this year. I even advised Chris that as the director he has the right to name somebody. Then again, the goal is to get all seven of these inductees or representatives to Antioch Speedway for the inductions in October, and I don't think there will be an issue with that. Now comes the organizational part and making the third Hall of Fame event special.

I didn't make it a secret that I used Chris's Antioch Speedway Days of Old Facebook page idea in launching a Merced Speedway Days of Old and Petaluma Speedway Days of Old page. The Petaluma page is my more recent creation, and I sparked a very interesting conversation recently by asking people who they would induct into a Petaluma Speedway Hall of Fame if one were created.

It doesn't seem like you hear a lot of talk about the heritage of Petaluma Speedway, but that track has been running weekly for as long as Antioch Speedway. Plus, they had a good go of it in the 1950s. I could come up with a list of 10 people very easily, and there were lots of good suggestions being put out there.

I don't think it would take too much to put a bug in the ear of Promoter Rick Faeth or Ron Lingron to get the ball rolling out there. The big concern I have is the future of Petaluma Speedway itself. I'm hearing some rumors about what Rick might be doing in the future, and I'm also hearing lots of speculation that the final race at the track will happen in October of 2022.

While there is still a chance to save things, I don't think any of us should give up. In fact, I would hope somebody might even be scouting other potential locations in case the track can't be kept alive. This is one of the reasons why I might be reluctant to push for a Hall of Fame night just yet, but it should become a regular part of the schedule if the track can continue beyond 2022.

I could go on and on here, but nothing I'd want to say here needs to be said just yet. I'm pulling for any race track to keep the show going, because I understand it's not a guarantee that you'll have success. All you can really do is have a good game plan, put the right people in place to execute that game plan and do your best.

Even people with money and good people behind them can ultimately fail. Some people can come into a situation completely clueless, but given the location and the love people have for their race track, they sort of succeed by accident. Does it really matter as long as the gates keep opening?

As I said when I began this media effort this year, I'm going to do it week to week. Unless I have a significant change in everything, I don't plan to continue beyond this year. I can just as easily keep an eye on what's going on with the current scene while letting others do the reporting. Doing that, I can get to work on books. I'd like to have something ready for a print on demand release by the end of the year, and I'd like to have at least one other title ready for release next year.

If I weren't focusing on the current media stuff, it would probably take me a good month to get my current book project released. Being as OCD as I can get, I don't like starting a media effort for a year and not seeing it to its conclusion, but it could happen this year.

The wild card in this whole scenario is the offer I'm currently exploring. I want to get a complete understanding of what it entails and if it's something that is feasible. On top of that is the possibility of a location change. If that were to happen and depending on where I went, a weekly media effort might not be possible for me to maintain.

It could even be that I drop completely out of sight for a while, so I don't take anything for granted. I take it one day at a time and do the best I can. If you are somebody who reads these articles, shares the links or tips me for the effort, know that you are appreciated.

On that note, I'm going to end this column. Until next time...
