Five New Antioch Speedway Hall Of Fame Inductees
Have Been Named
Antioch,
CA...In a live Facebook broadcast on Friday evening, Antioch Speedway
Hall of Fame Director Chris Briggs made a big announcement. His
committee has voted and selected the first five inductees into the Hall
of Fame for 2021. The first inductees include Bobby Hogge III, Marv
Wilson, Lonnie Williams, Steve Hendren and Don Shelton.
Members
of the committee include longtime racers and speedway supporters Ron
Brown, Debbie Clymens, Jimmy Robbins and Steve Perry. Briggs and his
committee went over the list of nominations compiled by themselves and
various other members of the Antioch racing community. They based their
decisions on several criteria, including on the track accomplishments,
longevity and impact of career.
Marv Wilson and
Lonnie Williams are Sportsman division champions. Williams raced in the
60s and 70s, winning 15 Main Events along with the 1967 division
championship. He was also a front runner at Petaluma Speedway and the
1970 champion there. Wilson began racing in the 1970s. He didn't race
for too many years, but he amassed 12 Main Event victories along with
the 1978 championship. He finished third the year before and second the
year after. In 1979, he won the Petaluma Speedway title and sold his car
and retired after winning the final 50 lap Main Event there.
Bobby
Hogge IV is a name that everybody knows. He has won just about
everything imaginable. For fans at Antioch Speedway in the 1980s, they
know just how good his father, Bobby Hogge III, was. Bobby's patented
"thread the needle" move was used many times to pass two drivers at
once, and he won 40 Late Model Main Events in his career at Antioch,
second only to Jim Pettit II. He won championships at other places as
well as the 1989 Pacific Coast Regional title. He also won track
championships in the Late Models at Antioch in 1985 and 1989 before
going on to crew chief for his son.
Steve Hendren
was perhaps the top Late Model star at the end of the NASCAR Regional
point era of the early 1990s. Hendren won 38 Main Events at Antioch
Speedway as well as the 1992 Regional championship. He won the final two
NASCAR Late Model championships in 1992 and 1993 and was Top 3 ranked
for four years in a row.
Don Shelton started
racing in Antioch in a Street Stock in 1985 and won his very first Main
Event that year. He became a top contender for the championship in the
class and a division runner-up twice before moving up to the Dirt
Modified division. In Modifieds, he won championships in 1998, 2000 and
2005 along with 24 Main Events. Counting his Street Stock and Figure 8
wins, Shelton won 38 Main Events.
Hall of Fame
night will take place at the Donna Soares/Larry Damitz Memorial race on
October 9th. These five people will be inducted in a special ceremony.
Briggs will put the next induction up for a fan vote, and the next three
people on the list are Dave Byrd, Ed Sans Jr and Debbie Clymens. After
the fans make a selection, the committee will come together and make one
more choice to come up with a list of seven total inductees.
This
year's class includes a heavy dose of 1980s stars. Sans and Byrd both
became well known names in the '80s. Byrd won two classic showdown
battles with JD Willis and Jim Pettit II for the 1982 and 1983
championships. He beat Willis by a combined total of 10 points for his
two titles along with 18 wins and the 1983 NASCAR Regional championship
before moving up to the Southwest Tour and pavement Late Model racing.
Sans
won three consecutive Late Model championships at San Jose before
deciding he wanted to run for Regional points. He got off to a late
start and missed races in 1985, but he nearly overtook Bobby Hogge III
to win the title that year after winning the season finale. A year
later, Sans did win the Antioch championship along with the 1988 Pacific
Coast Regional championship. He went on to win multiple championships
at Petaluma and a total of 35 Main Events in Antioch.
Clymens
is known as the lady who kicked open the door for other women to follow
in the sport at Antioch Speedway. She wasn't the first woman to race
with the guys, but she's the best known. She had a lengthy career of two
decades driving Street Stocks, Figure 8 cars, Late Models and
Modifieds, winning Main Events in the Figure 8, Street Stocks and the
Modified division as well as being a runner-up in points in both Figure 8
and Street Stock competition. She was also a Top 10 Dirt Modified racer
and a Top 10 Late Model driver on multiple occasions.
A
fan vote will take place on the Antioch Speedway Days of Old Facebook
page to determine who the third inductee will be, and the results of
that vote will be announced a week after the vote begins. After that is
done, the committee will make another selection and then preparations
will begin for the Hall of Fame ceremonies that will take place at
Antioch Speedway on October 9th. For further information, check into the
Antioch Speedway Days of Old page on Facebook or www.antiochspeedway.com.
Sanders Returns For Fourth Win At Ocean Speedway
Watsonville,
CA...May 7...Justin Sanders won the 25 lap Taco Bravo Sprint Car Main
event Friday night at Ocean Speedway. Sanders skipped last week to
compete in a big money show, but he returned to action in a big way by
scoring his fourth win of the season as he continues his drive towards
his first track championship since 2015. His win came aboard the North
County Plastering sponsored Sprinter.
Tristan
Guardino won the six lap Trophy Dash ahead of Dominic Scelzi to grab the
front row for the Main Event. Scelzi raced into the lead at the start
ahead of Guardino and Joey Ancona. A yellow flag waved on Lap 2, and
Sanders settled into second behind Scelzi on the restart. Scelzi and
Sanders started battling for the lead, and Sanders motored ahead on Lap
13 before a yellow flag waved. Sanders led Scelzi and Corey Day on this
restart and a Lap 16 restart. Though Scelzi kept it close, Sanders
continued to keep his cool at the front of the pack. A final yellow flag
waved on Lap 23, but Sanders again motored ahead on the restart. Corey
Day was third at that point and put the moves on Scelzi for second on
Lap 29. Sanders scored the win ahead of Corey Day, Scelzi, Bud Kaeding,
Guardino, Ancona, Kurt Nelson, Keith Day Jr, Travis Labat and Koen Shaw.
Kaeding
was the quickest of 19 Sprint Cars with a lap of 11.432 on the Tom
Sagmiller prepared quarter-mile clay oval. Sanders was second quick at
11.436 with Ancona clocking a lap of 11.455. Eight lap race wins went to
Guardino, Shaw and Scelzi.
Joe Gallaher won
the 20 lap Hobby Stock Main Event. This was the third win of the season
for the reigning division champion. Gallaher moved into the lead at the
start ahead of Quentin Harris and Jerry Skelton. Skelton took the second
position from Harris on Lap 9 with many-time champion Sam Kennedy
settling into third. Gallaher held a big lead when a Lap 16 yellow flag
bunched the field. Kennedy moved past Skelton for second on the restart.
However, nobody was stopping Gallaher as he won ahead of Kennedy,
Skelton, Harris, Brady Muller and Scott Freeman. Norm Ayers, Tony
Oliveira and Steve Remde were Main Event scratches, and the eight lap
heat race wins went to Skelton and Joe Gallaher.
Kate
Beardsley won her second 15 lap Four Banger Main Event of the season.
The two-time champion had the pole and settled into the lead at the
start ahead of Travis Van Gilder and Nicole Beardsley. Reigning champion
Ryan McClelland gained third on Lap 2 and took second from Van Gilder a
lap later. Unfortunately, McClelland had problems on the fourth lap as
Van Gilder was back in the runner-up spot ahead of Richard Mitchell.
Kate Beardsley set a good pace out front all the way to the checkered
flag with Van Gilder not too far behind in second. Mitchell crossed the
line in third but was later disqualified, handing third to Nicole
Beardsley, followed by Bill Beardsley, McClelland and Eddie Gallaher.
Kate Beardsley also won the six lap heat race.
Roy
Iler won the 15 lap Police N Pursuit Main Event. This was the second
win of the season for the point leader, who represents the San Benito
Sheriff's Office. Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office representative AJ
Waltrip raced into the early lead ahead of Scotts Valley Police
Department Officer John Hohmann. Iler moved into second on the fifth lap
and began challenging Waltrip for the lead. On the 12th lap, Iler
motored past Waltrip for the lead and then began to pull away from
there. Iler won with Jackie Yeung of the Capitola Police Department
making a late move to finish second. Waltrip settled for third, followed
by Hohmann, Fernando Tellez, Pat Sullivan, Nate Graham and Tony Weir.
Ryan Luke was a Main Event scratch, and Waltrip and Iler were the six
lap heat race winners.
Modified Madness is what it's all about next Friday night when the
IMCA Modifieds return to action along with the IMCA Sport Modifieds,
Western Midgets, Hobby Stocks and Four Bangers. For further information,

Carrick Brothers Steal The Show At Silver Dollar Speedway
Chico,
CA...May 7...Tanner Carrick won the 25 lap Winged 360 Sprint Car Main
Event Friday night at Silver Dollar Speedway. Carrick led most of the
way before being overtaken by Shane Golobic. When misfortune struck
Golobic in traffic, Tanner Carrick was able to regain the lead and bring
it home to victory. Meanwhile, his brother Blake Carrick was making an
epic charge from the C Main all the way to a third place feature finish.
Tanner
Carrick took the early lead ahead of John Michael Bunch and reigning
champion Sean Becker. They ran 12 laps before the first yellow flag flew
for Ben Worth in Turn 2. On the restart, Golobic took third from
Becker, and a Lap 15 yellow flag waved for Steven Ingraham and Brett
Barney in Turn 2. Ingraham retired. On the restart, Golobic moved into
second behind Carrick, and another yellow flag waved moments later for
Jake Andreotti. Carrick continued to lead Golobic on the restart, but
Golobic moved ahead on the 17th lap. Golobic set of rapid pace as he led
the way with Tanner Carrick in pursuit. However, misfortune struck
Golobic when he tangled with the lapped car of Ron LaPlant for a red
flag causing crash on Lap 23. At that point, Blake Carrick had worked
his way all the way into fourth. Tanner Carrick regained the lead ahead
of Sean Becker and Blake Carrick, and they finished in that order. Bunch
settled for fourth, followed by Justyn Cox, Andy Forsberg, Michael Ing,
Billy Aton, Willie Croft and Worth.
There were
43 Winged 360 Sprint Cars for this show, and the drivers qualified in
their respective heat race groups. Oregon's Tyler Thompson was in the
first group and set the overall fast time of 11.937 on the quarter-mile
clay oval, beating the 12.026 of Forsberg from the same group. Eight lap
heat race wins went to Thompson, Tanner Carrick, Becker and Cox.
A
bad heat race put Blake Carrick in the C Main, but he managed to win
that 10 lap race. RJ Baker moved into the lead on the second lap and
held the spot until being overtaken by Carrick on the sixth lap. Carrick
won ahead of Baker and Angelo Cornet. As Carrick worked his way up from
the fifth row in 12 lap the B Main, Worth led early from the pole ahead
of Ashlyn Rodriguez. Geoff Ensign gained second on the sixth lap before
the yellow flag waved and Ensign pitted with mechanical issues. Worth
led just one more lap before Carrick motored by for the lead that he
would bring home to victory. Worth settled for second, followed by Nick
Larsen, Korey Lovell and Drake Standley.
Ken
Micheli won the 20 lap Street Stock Main Event. This was the
second-straight win for the reigning track champion. Richard Vander
Ploeg had a front row start and moved into the early lead ahead of
Micheli and Richard Workman. However, a yellow flag flew for Workman on
Lap 2. Vander Ploeg continued to lead as Phil Marino moved around
Micheli for second on the restart. Vander Ploeg and Marino ran closely
at the front of the pack with Marino making the move into the lead on
Lap 6. As Marino led, Micheli moved in to battle Vander Ploeg for the
second position, and a Lap 12 yellow flag waved for Terry Lawrence in
Turn 4. Marino led Vander Ploeg and Micheli on the restart, but Vander
Ploeg saw his race come to an end in Turn 4 for a Lap 16 yellow flag.
The restart saw a crash eliminate Marino and Top 5 running Gary Newman.
Micheli found himself leading the next restart ahead of Bill Hall and
Lawrence, and they finished in that order at the checkered flag. Workman
placed fourth, followed by Fritz Zanker, Vander Ploeg, Marino, Newman,
Lyle Hopper and Wes Brown. The eight lap heat race wins went to Marino
and Hall.
Keith Ross won the 20 lap Hobby Stock
Main Event. Ross was a Main Event winner earlier this year at
Marysville, and he got this win after a late race duel with Kyle Cheney.
Cheney had the pole and moved into the early lead ahead of Jeremiah
Creedon and reigning champion Kyle Allen. Allen gained second on Lap 2.
Kevin Lesch settled into third on Lap 6 before the fourth yellow flag of
the race waved for Paul Stephens in Turn 4. Stephens retired from the
race, and Shannon Collins settled into third behind Cheney and Allen on
the restart. Chaney and Allen had a good race going at the front of the
pack, and a Lap 10 yellow flag flew for Jim Brookshire in Turn 3. Ross
moved into second on the restart, and Collins took third from Allen on a
Lap 12 restart. The lead three drivers were running closely at the
front of the pack during the final laps. Ross moved past Cheney for the
lead on Lap 18, but Cheney came back strong to grab the lead a lap
later. However, Ross made a last lap move and brought it home to
victory. Cheney settled for second, followed by Collins, Lesch, Jacob
Johnson, Allen, John Williams, Trevor Deadmond, Zach Lindgren and Robert
Warf. The 19 car field ran three eight lap heat races with wins going
to Ross, Brookshire and Lindgren.
The track has
added a May 30th race during the Fair that will feature the Crate
Sprints and the Hobby Stocks. For further information, go to www.silverdollarspeedway.com.
Alberding Wins The Interstate Sprint Car Series Opener
At Cottage Grove Speedway
Cottage
Grove, Oregon...May 7...Kyle Alberding won the 25 lap Interstate Sprint
Car Series Main Event Friday night at Cottage Grove Speedway. This was
the first race this season for the series that was relaunched back in
2018.
Southern Oregon Dwarf Car star Camden
Robustelli got behind the wheel of the TJ Winningham car and moved into
the early lead ahead of Jordi Meese and past champion Shane Forte. Third
row starter Alberding slipped past Forte for third on Lap 6 and
overtook Meese for second on the 12th lap. Alberding closed in on
Robustelli and made his winning pass on Lap 15. From there, Alberding
went on to win with Robustelli still not too far behind in second. Meese
was a solid third, followed by Brian Boswell, Steven Snawder, RJ
McGahuey, Forte, Brody Sim, Brett McGhie and Carley Holmes.
The
21 drivers qualified in their respective heat race groups. Forte set
the fast time in the second group at 13.004 with the overall second
quick time also coming in the second heat group at 13.014 for McGhie.
Eight lap heat race wins went to Pat Desbiens, Enrique Jaime and Meese.
Three-time
reigning Southern Oregon Speedway champion Jorddon Braaten won the 20
lap Royalty Core IMCA Sport Modified Main Event. Braaten didn't have a
point average coming into the night and was stuck back in the sixth row
at the start. Trevor Points had the pole and led the first seven laps.
Aaron Bloom ran second until being passed briefly by Matt Brown on the
fourth lap. Braaten made the move into second a lap later and stalked
Points until moving into the lead on the eighth lap. Points surrendered
second to Dustin Comer on the 10th lap. However, Braaten quickly built a
straightaway advantage over Dustin Comer by the checkered flag. Aaron
Bloom was about a straightaway behind Comer in third, but that became a
second place finish after Comer was disqualified. Points settled for
third, followed by reigning champion Doug Coffman, Steve Hopkins, Dalton
Bloom, Ray Comer, Travis Pruitt, KC Scott and Ray Bloom.
Braaten
was the quickest of 20 drivers in qualifying with the only 14 second
lap of 14.985, beating the 15.191 of Dalton Bloom. The eight lap heat
race wins went to Coffman, Braaten and Dustin Comer, and Coffman was
also the four lap Trophy Dash winner. They ran a 12 lap B Main with the
win going to Ray Comer. Comer led every lap in victory with Aaron
Trissell a race-long second ahead of Jeff Cluff.
Craig
Osborne won the 20 lap Street Stock Main Event. This was the third win
of the season for the current point leader. Osborne had the pole
position and led every lap of the race. Kersey Ferrando moved into an
early second ahead of Troy Chamberlain. Chamberlain surrendered third to
last starter Daniel Ray on the eighth lap. Ray moved past Fernando for
second on Lap 10 and took up pursuit of Osborne. However, Osborne would
go on to score the victory ahead of Ray. Ferrando was disqualified from
third, moving Chamberlain into the position ahead of Anthony Prather,
Bob Bloom, Mike Swaim, Robert Hughes and Taunton Swaim. Bloom set the
fast time of 16.029, barely beating the 16.047 of Osborne. The eight lap
heat race wins went to Ray and Taunton Swaim, and Osborne picked up the
four lap Trophy Dash win.
Burnie Bryant won
his second 20 lap IMCA Sport Compact Main Event. Mike Cockerline led
early from the pole. Andrew Langan held second for two laps before Brad
Martin grabbed the spot, and Martin moved into the lead on the sixth
lap. Cockerline retired two laps later, and Bryant settled into second
on the ninth lap ahead of Rex Eckley. Adam Keggan gained third on Lap 13
and took second from Bryant on Lap 16. Bryant regained the position a
lap later and began pressuring Martin for first. On the 19th lap, Bryant
put the moves on Martin and took the lead that he would bring to the
checkered flag. Martin settled for second, followed by Keggan, Kerry
Cooper, Langan, Barry Cannon, Tiffany Towns, Eckley, Cockerline and
Jason Loucks. Bryant was the quickest of 13 qualifiers with a lap of
16.901, beating the 17.173 of Martin. Bryant and Martin picked up the
eight lap heat race wins, and Keggan was the four lap Trophy Dash
winner.
