Modifieds Part Of Six Division Show At Antioch Speedway
Antioch, CA...The motors were silenced last Saturday night at Antioch Speedway, which was a rare non weather related occurrence. There was a break in the water line at the Contra Costa County Fairgrounds, and that effected the ability of track management to properly prepare the track. Promoter John M. Soares is known for preparing a hooked up race track with little or no dust, and that wasn't possible last week. It was decided to cancel that show while repairs were being made and come back with a loaded six division program this week.
The schedule was adjusted from the originally scheduled King Of The West Sprint Car program. Soares and Tour leadership came to an agreement due to concerns over being able to offer fans the quality show that the ticket price commands. Soares seized the opportunity to book a show that gave his regular divisions a makeup night for races lost earlier this season due to rain. The six division program will feature All Star Series A Modifieds, Wingless Spec Sprints, B Modifieds, Limited Late Models, Hobby Stocks and Dwarf Cars. If you are a racing fan looking for lots of cars and variety, Saturday night is the night to come to Antioch Speedway.
A Modifieds are seven races into their 28th season with four more races to go. The battle for the championship is between Bobby Motts Jr., Sean O'Gara and Mike Salazar, and the winner will earn their first championship in this division. All three are still looking for their first victory of the season. Motts has been the most consistent with two seconds and two thirds. His lead over second generation racer O'Gara is just 26 points. O'Gara has one second and one third. Just 27 points back is Salazar. His season opening effort is a snapshot into the kind of season he's had. Mike was headed for victory when he blew a motor on the last lap that night. Despite the bad luck he's had this season. Salazar has three Top 5 finishes and is very much in the championship hunt.
Rookie Eric Berendsen knows about bad luck. He's blown a motor and rolled his car, and yet thanks to the support of many people, the long time Hobby Stock and Limited Late Model competitor is still 11 points ahead of speedway legend Scott Busby in the battle for fourth. For Busby, points went out the window after a string of three bad nights following his season opening win. However, he's on the verge of taking sole possession of the All Time win record at the speedway. Busby is tied with J.D. Willis with 72 total wins in his illustrious career. These five racers will lead the charge into Saturday night.
Another good battle is taking place in the 19th Wingless Spec Sprint championship season. On the strength of his two second place finishes out of five Top 4's, Alan Miranda leads division mainstay Rick Panfili by 24 points. While Miranda seems on the verge of his first win, Panfili has been struggling with a bent frame suffered two races ago. In fact, 2014 Watsonville champion Bryan Grier and rookie Robert Floyd, both winners this season, are within ten points of him in the battle for second. Grier missed a race, but his two wins and two third place finishes has put him back into contention. As for handling pressure situations, Grier won his Watsonville championship by one point on the last night in a good battle with Brent Maggi. The red hot Bob Newberry, Brandon Burd, Shannon Newton and Roy Fisher are other fast competitors to keep an eye on this week.
They say consistency wins championships, and right now we have a great battle in the B Modified division. Reigning champion Trevor Clymens has four wins, a second and a third. K.C. Keller has four seconds, a win and two thirds. At the moment, that puts Keller six points ahead of Clymens. Every point counts, and Keller's late race restart move from fourth to second gained him four additional points last time out. These two aren't the only racers on the track, and we have a good battle for third between Chuck Golden and Mark Garner. Golden leads Garner by just six points. While Golden has finished as high as second, Garner recently won his first Main Event. Both of these drivers will be in the mix this week. Doff Cooksey is another driver with a second as he searches for his first win. You also can't count out hard chargers like Randy Brown, Kevin Brown, Tim Hammett and Megan Ponciano.
Another good battle is taking place in the Limited Late Models, and it's anybody's guess who will win it. With two wins and two seconds in the Sun Drop Racing #15 car, Kimo Oreta leads one time winner Mark Garner by just six points. You certainly can't count out 2013 champion Jim Freethy. He is only 12 points back and has yet to finish outside the Top 3. Two time champion Mike Gustafson is 26 points out of the lead. He won the opener and has won about 50 Main Events in this division. With John Evans, Chad Hammer, Jeff Kendrick and Buddy Kniss among the field, it should be a great night of racing.
The Hobby Stock division's championship battle did not change after their most recent race. Three time winner Chris Long was absent with a blown motor, and two time winner Brent Curran was disqualified following a second place feature finish. Curran's lead is still 23 points over Long, and both drivers are anticipated this week. Long, who has never really had the budget, is doing all he can to make it to the end of the season. Curran just recently became a father as he seeks to put a Hobby Stock championship trophy next to his Mini Stock trophy. Chris Bennett lurks nine points behind Long and only 15 points ahead of Chris Sorensen. 23 points behind Bennett in the third place battle is Cameron Swank. Sorensen is now a three time winner this season, while Swank has three career best seconds. Bennett still seeks his first podium finish. The Hobby Stock field may be the most competitive at the track, and other stars to watch for this week include Gene Haney, Billy Garner, Jordan Swank, Michael Cooper and Ricky Foster.
Mike Corsaro is hoping this will be his championship season. He gave it a great effort last year before finishing second, but he has a 51 point lead over the Rosa Racing Team. Corsaro's impressive numbers include two firsts, three seconds and two thirds. David Michael Rosa and his father David Rosa are tied for second. Both are looking for their first win of the season, and David Michael has finished second twice. Ageless veteran Charlie Correia and young rookie Devan Kammermann are tied for fourth, two points out of second. Though Correia has won his share of races through the years, he seeks his first win of the season. Kammermann has four Top 5 finishes. Other stars to keep an eye on this week include Chris Becker, Chuck Conover, David Corsaro and Brandon Anderson. There have been five different winners in the nine races held so far.
Once the first green flag waves on this exciting six division program, it's going to be non stop action. It kicks off an exciting month of weekly racing in August. For further information, go to www.antiochspeedway.com.
