Papenhausen Returns To Winner's Circle At Antioch Speedway

Antioch, CA...August 12...Reigning DIRTcar Late Model champion Richard Papenhausen turned in a dominant performance in winning the 20 lap Main Event Saturday night at Antioch Speedway.  This was the second win of the season for Papenhausen, who started his night off with an eight lap heat race win.  From the drop of the green flag, Papenhausen set a blistering pace and pulled ahead by a wide margin.  He was never seriously challenged on his way to the victory.  Shawn DeForest led a close three car battle for second for most of the race.  As they raced to the checkered flag, ninth starter Clay Daly pulled even with DeForest is a photo finish.  Official scorers ruled that DeForest finished second ahead of Daly, point leader Jeff Decker and David Newquist.

Point leader Bryan Grier won the 20 lap All Star Series Wingless Spec Sprint Main Event.  This was the third win of the season for Grier, and it came after a good battle with Robert Floyd.  The race only had one yellow flag, and Grier raced into the lead at the start ahead of Floyd and Shannon Newton.  Floyd closed in on Grier after they completed the 16th lap, and he made an outside pass on the back stretch to gain the lead on lap 17.  As they exited Turn 2, Newton spun for the only yellow flag.  Scoring reverted back a lap, and Grier was put back into the lead.  Floyd gave it a valiant effort on the final lap, but Grier kept his cool for the win.  Previous winner Bob Newberry came from tenth starting to finish third, followed by Alan Miranda and Rick Panfili.

Jim Freethy won the 20 lap Limited Late Model Main Event.  This was the first win of the season for the 2013 champion, and it should move him into second in the standings.  Freethy has been consistent all year with five Top 3 finishes.  On this occasion, he had to hold off point leader Kimo Oreta for the win.  Heat race winner Mike Gustafson finished third ahead of Mark Garner and a season best fifth for Chad Hammer.

After the Limited Late Model race, Mark Garner jumped into his B Modified and won that 20 lap Main Event.  This was Garner's second win, and it came after contact sent him spinning in the late stages of the race.  Heat winner Chuck Golden set the pace for four laps before Garner's inside pass in Turn 3 moved him ahead.  On a lap 14 restart, point leader K.C. Keller gained the lead from Garner, and contact sent Garner spinning in Turn 2 for a yellow flag.  Garner was quickly back into second on the restart, and he gained the lead with Keller's solo spin in Turn 4 on lap 16.  Keller made a last ditch attempt at the winning pass in the final turn, but he spun for the second time as Garner won ahead of Nick Caughman Jr.  Keller settled for third ahead of Golden and Kevin Brown.

Michael Cooper won the 20 lap Hobby Stock Main Event.  This was Cooper's first win since opening day.  Fellow heat winner Melissa Myers ran second for the first 12 laps.  After contact put Jordan Swank into the front wall for a lap 12 yellow flag, both Myers and fourth place Chris Long pitted with flat tires.  Cooper led Cameron Swank on the restart.  Despite late pressure from C. Swank, Cooper brought it home to victory.  C. Swank settled for his fourth runnerup finish of the season as Myers, Chris Sorensen and Gene Haney rounded out the Top 5.

Kevin Miraglio won the 20 lap Dwarf Car Main Event.  This was the first win for the defending champion since the season opener, and he also won his heat race.  The race had heavy attrition as David Rosa hit the Turn 4 wall early.  A stuck throttle in point leader Mike Corsaro's car resulted in a crash with Devan Kammermann that ended the race for both.  Miraglio avoided the tangles and took the checkered flag ahead of Mike Reeder.  However, Reeder was disqualified in post race tech.  Brian Gray had his best night of the year with a heat race win and a second place feature finish, followed by Mario Marquez and Chris Becker.

Racing resumes next Saturday night with another six division All Star Series program that will feature Winged 360 Sprint Cars, BCRA Midget Lights, B Modifieds, Limited Late Models, Hobby Stocks and Hardtops.  For further information, go to www.antiochspeedway.com.

Porter, DeVolder, Nelson, Birdsong Win On
Legends Night At Merced Speedway

Merced, CA...August 12...Ryan Porter won the 20 lap IMCA Modified Main Event Saturday night at Merced Speedway.  Other wins went to Shane DeVolder in IMCA Sport Modifieds, Bruce "Bubba" Nelson in Hobby Stocks and Chris Birdsong in the Valley Sportsman division.  It was Legends night, and several of the track's stars of the past were on hand.  Longtime racer and promoter Chuck Griffin and Johnny Sass, known as The Voice Of Merced Speedway, were both honored as Legends Of Merced Speedway.

Ryan Porter won his first 20 lap IMCA Modified Main Event of the season.  Justin Villanueva set the early pace ahead of brothers Ramie Stone and Troy Stone.  R. Stone was working the outside groove and made several attempts to get around Villanueva.  Darrell Hughes II and Porter ran close in this five car battle up front.  Hughes managed to grab third on lap seven before a caution flag flew.  Porter was working the inside groove on the restart, and he took third from Hughes with a low pass in Turn 4 of the tenth lap.  Porter made a similar move on lap 13 to grab second from R. Stone.  Porter moved past Villanueva with an inside pass in Turn 2 of the 14th lap to grab the lead.  Once he had the lead, Porter went on to score the impressive victory.  J. Villanueva was a season best second as Jeff Streeter won a late race duel with R. Stone for third.  Hughes settled for fifth, followed by T. Stone, Ryan Larimer, Bill Egleston, Mitch Enos and Josh Gish.  Larimer and Porter won eight lap heat races.

IMCA Sport Modified State point leader Shane DeVolder won their 20 lap Main Event.  DeVolder and Chase Thomas started the night with eight lap heat race wins, but Cody Parker was the early star of the Main Event as he raced out front at the drop of the green flag.  A low move in Turn 4 of the third lap gained Josh Hensley second from Dwayne Short, and Tanner Thomas passed Short at the line to grab third on lap five.  Tim Ragsdale and DeVolder quickly moved into fourth and fifth.  DeVolder made a strong outside move on the back stretch to take second from Hensley on lap nine and took the lead from Porter with a similar move on lap ten.  T. Thomas made an inside pass in Turn 4 of the 14th lap to take second from Parker.  As DeVolder pulled away, Ragsdale and Parker had a good battle for third.  Ragsdale went by Parker on the outside down the back stretch to take over third on lap 18.  Short spun on the back stretch on lap 18, but didn't draw a yellow flag.  The leaders received a white flag, and Short got going right in front of the leaders.  This caused Parker to lose a few spots in the final turn as DeVolder won ahead of T. Thomas, Ragsdale, Hensley, C. Thomas, Parker, Chuck Weir and Gary Tucker.

Bruce "Bubba" Nelson followed up his big Mike Cecil Memorial win at Watsonville with a 20 lap Hobby Stock victory at his home track.  Eight lap heat race wins put Dexter Long, Austin Van Hoff and Nelson in the first three starting positions, and Van Hoff led the first two laps.  Nelson raced by Van Hoff in Turn 4 to take the lead on lap three.  A low move in Turn 4 of the fifth lap gained Kodie Dean second from Van Hoff as Michael Shearer moved in to battle Van Hoff for third.  Dean set his sights on Nelson and made a high pass in turn 4 of the ninth lap to grab the lead.  Nelson went by on the inside in Turn 3 of the tenth lap to reclaim first.  M. Shearer had taken over third as Garrett Corn and Kevin Joaquin ran ran closely in the Top 5.  A yellow flag waved after 17 laps when Nelson spun, got clipped in the front end by Van Hoff and veered high and into the path of Corn in Turn 2.  Nelson continued to lead Dean and Joaquin on the restart.  As Nelson brought it home to victory, Joaquin just beat Dean back to the line for second.  Long finished fourth, followed by Tony Peffer, John Hensley, M. Shearer, Van Hoff, Kristie Shearer and Mike Germait.

Chris Birdsong scored an emotional win in the 15 lap Valley Sportsman Main Event.  Chris' father, Kenny Birdsong, recently lost his battle with Cancer, and Chris was driving his dad's Rod Poor Tribute car.  Birdsong won a close battle with Mark Odgers in the six lap heat race.  Odgers was piloting his Vern Willhoite Tribute car.  Birdsong and Odgers ran 1-2 at the start of the Main Event.  Jeff Bristow was an early third, but he spun in Turn 1 for a lap four caution flag.  Birdsong continued to lead Odgers and Mike Friesen on the restart.  A low move in Turn 4 of the sixth lap gained Jesse James Burks third from Friesen.  Friesen went by Burks on the inside in Turn 4 to regain third on lap eight.  Odgers was giving Birdsong a good battle for the lead and beat him back to the line on lap 13.  However, Birdsong raced underneath in Turn 2 of the 14th lap to regain the lead.  Birdsong held off Odgers for the the win.  Burks won his battle with Friesen for third as Bristow, Rick Elliot and Jeff West completed the finishing order.

Racing resumes next Saturday with IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sport Modifieds, Hobby Stocks and Mini Stocks all in action.  For further information, go to www.racemerced.com.

Collins, Ross, Davis Win Orland Raceway Main Events

Orland, CA...August 12...Saturday night was the Thomas Schmitke "Race For A Cure" event at Orland Raceway.  In addition to raising money for St. Jude's Children's Hospital, there was a full program of racing on the one-fifth mile clay oval.  There were six Main Event winner's sharing the winner's circle at the end of the evening.

Shannon Collins gained valuable ground in the Pure Stock championship battle with his second straight 20 lap Main Event victory.  Collins started back in the sixth row and worked his way up as Jason Armstrong set the early pace ahead of reigning champion Steve Martin.  Nick Vidivich and Collins settled into second and third on a lap five restart, and a yellow flag for a crash involving Amanda Koop gave Vidovich his opportunity to take the lead from Armstrong on the restart.  Collins finally pulled ahead of Armstrong with an inside pass on lap 12 and began to pressure Vidovich for the lead.  Collins made an inside pass in Turn 2 to take the lead from Vidovich on lap 18, and it was Collins winning ahead of Vidovich, 2015 champion Paul Stevens, Armstrong and Brad Ray.

Point leader Tom Davis won the 20 lap Mini Stock Main Event.  Two time winner Donovan Chilton rebounded from his disappointing outing two weeks ago by racing into the lead at the start.  Sean Perry settled into second, and seventh starter Davis was third by lap seven.  On lap 12, Chilton got sideways exiting Turn 2, and Perry made contact with him.  Davis raced past both of them down the back stretch as Perry recovered in second.  Davis was smooth during the final eight laps and won his fifth Main Event with Perry chasing him in second.  Hunter Merritt spun in the final turn, handing third to Chilton ahead of Olin Crane and John Kirkpatrick.

Point leader Keith Ross won the 20 lap Mini Truck Main Event.  Reigning champion Dan Webster led three laps before surrendering the point to Ross.  Olin Crane slipped past Webster for second on lap five, and the battle was on for the lead.  Crane ran closely behind Ross, looking for him to make any mistake.  However, Ross drove a flawless race and won ahead of Crane, Webster and William Fogle.

Jason Armstrong did double duty as he won the 20 lap California Hardtops Main Event.  A half dozen vintage Chevy and Ford Coupes and Sedans competed, and Ken Clifford led the first two laps before Ron Ruiz went by on the front stretch for the lead.  A lap three caution flag flew for a two car crash in Turn 3.  J. Armstrong raced into the lead on the restart and set a blistering pace in winning the race.  Ruiz was a strong second, and K. Clifford beat Jason's father Dennis Armstrong back to the line in a close race for third.

James Barnes snapped point leader Jackie Whitson Jr's seven race win streak in the 250 Micro Sprint feature as Whitson settled for second ahead of Seth Libbee.  Rowdy McClennon won the 20 lap 600 Micro Sprint race.

Racing continues this Saturday night with CASA Introduction And Awareness Night.  Pure Stocks will be back along with Mini Stocks, Mini Trucks, Winged Micro 250's, Micro 600's and Wingless Gas Sprints.  For further information, go to www.orlandraceway.org.

Watsonville, CA...August 12...Michael "Buddy" Kofoid won the Johnny Key Classic Saturday night at Ocean Speedway.  Kofoid won a big $5,000 payday for his win in the 50 lap race.  It followed up his King Of The West Series win in the Howard Kaeding Classic at Watsonville a month earlier.  The Civil War Series event drew 25 competitors.  Kofoid had to work for this one as nine time Civil War Series champion Andy Forsberg and D.J. Netto started up front with him.  Kofoid just beat Foreberg back to the line for the win as Netto was a close third    Justin Sanders won another close battle with reigning King Of The West Series champion Kyle Hirst for fourth.  Mitchell Faccinto finished sixth, followed by Zane Blanchard, Bud Kaeding, Geoff Ensign and Koen Shaw.  Ensign earned his Main Event start by winning the 12 lap B Main ahead of Collin Markle and Jarrett Soares.  Kofoid earned his pole position start for the Main Event by holding off Netto to win the six lap Trophy Dash.  Forsberg, Colby Copeland and Gio Scelzi won ten lap heat races.  Faccinto set the fast time of 11.801 as Sanders was second quick with a lap of 11.851.
