$1000 On The Line As A Modifieds Kick Off Season
At Antioch Speedway

Antioch, CA...The popular A Modifieds begin their 27th season of racing at Antioch Speedway this Saturday night, and the winner of the feature will get a $1000 payday.  Also making their first appearance of the season will be the Wingless Spec Sprints as Limited Late Models, B Modifieds and Hobby Stocks round out an exciting five division program on John M. Soares's fast three-eighth mile clay oval.

Buzz has generally been pretty positive in the A Modified community as we head into the season.  In fact, last week saw three drivers test their cars for the season opener, including Late Model racer Chester Kniss, John MacDougall and Clay Twigg.  Kniss spent much of last season getting his Delta Transmission #28 car back together and had an impressive Top 3 performance in last season's finale.  MacDougall ran half a season as the point leader last year and was a feature winner at Merced before a crash at Petaluma ended his season early.  He was Top 5 in two point  races at Antioch in 2014 and intends to run a full season.

The list of names anticipated for the first race is impressive.  Scott Busby is the defending champion, and the lettering on his car was just being completed last week.  As a 68 time winner in his impressive Antioch career, Busby could be the man to beat.  However he can expect stiff competition from Aaron Crowell.  The 2004 champion and a two time winner last year, Crowell looked good in practice back in March.  Practice didn't go so well for veteran Mikey Slaney, but the feature winner in three different divisions at Antioch did find issues with the car that could have hurt him in the opener.

Another day at the office as feature winner David Teves displays of Main Event winning plaque.  Three Nutz Racing Photo

Sean O'Gara had his motor together for practice, and the Top 3 racer from a few seasons ago is anticipated along with 2015 runner up Bobby Motts Jr.  The increased first prize could lure four time champion Troy Foulger or one time champion Kellen Chadwick to the speedway as well.  Plus, other regulars like Mike Salazar, Trent Wentworth and Josh Combs could be there.  With Petaluma dark this week, Nick DeCarlo and Michael Paul Jr., both multi time champions there, could also be in action.  A good turnout is anticipated for this race.

Shifting gears to the Wingless Spec Sprints, much buzz has surrounded this division coming into the season, and two of the big names are past champions Jim Perry Jr. and Jimmy Perry III.  Both drivers have won many times in this class as Perry Jr. ranks first and Perry III is third on the All Time Win List in this division.  Perry III won multiple times last season in his Top 5 point effort.  Two time champion Dan Gonderman is anticipated in the Marcus Smith car.  The 2015 "Rookie Of The Year" Smith got a ride in Richard Basden's #20 car this season, but he took a tumble a few weeks ago in Marysille.  He should be in action this week.

Car count should be solid for this race. There's been no word on the plans of two time champion  Billy Macedo, who won twice last season in his three starts, but he would be a big factor in the battle if he showed.  Others to watch for include two time Top 3 ranked racer Rick Panfili, Alan Miranda, James East, Peter Carlotto and Jeremy Newberry.  There is also the much anticipated division debut of Adam Teves in the #42 Lloyd Beard tribute car.  Adam moved up after his impressive runner up season in Dwarf Cars last year.

Dwarf Car racer Tim Reeder reminds up that safety counts, even when cleaning the trailer.  Reeder Racing Photo.

Limited Late Models still have that familiar face at the front of the pack in Larry Damitz.  The 86 year old veteran of six decades of racing won the season opener two weeks ago as he attempts to win another championship.  "The Sundrop Kid" has won four of the last five championships and is closing in fast on the Top 5 on the track's All Time Win List.  The driver to deny him a championship during this run, 2013 champion Jim Freethy, sort of struggled a bit in the opener as he finished fourth.  He's hoping to have the #99 car dialed in this week.

Lori Brown had her #65 car hooked up last time as she finished a strong second.  Though not really counting points, Lori would very much like to get another win.  It's been a few years for the past division champion.  Meanwhile, three time Hobby Stock champion Kimo Oreta had a strong start to his rookie campaign with his third place finish.  Two who didn't do so well last time were Mark Garner and John Keith, who both had DNF's while competing for a Top 3 finish.  The Calvin Louis Jr. Hobby Stock sighting last week might suggest that the team will finally debut their new Limited Late Model.  A few more cars are anticipated for this race.

Car count dipped last week as Fred Fryland and his wife Patti skipped the B Modified race.  F. Ryland has been winning a lot this year on the circuit, but the defending champion appears to be declining a bid to repeat as champion.  He'll still be fast when he's there.  Speaking of fast, Anthony Giuliani turned things around after a disappointing DNF in the opener.  He picked up a victory ahead of last season's point runner up, Al Johnson.  Johnson is hot on the trail of his first win.  With $400 on the line to the winner this week, this would be the time to do it.

Trevor Clymens had a heat win last week, but his Main Event wasn't what was desired as he settled for fourth behind Brian Pearce.  Trevor could be the driver to beat in the championship race, but it's still too early to talk about things like that.  Other drivers anticipated this week include Danny Jones, Megan Ponciano, K.C. Keller and Tim Hammett.

The Hobby Stocks are wide open this year, and that means we could be looking at a feature winner's list with many names on it.  Last week, rookie Guy Ahlwardt impressed with a feature victory ahead of Michael Cooper.  This comes a week after third place finisher Danny Jones held off Cooper for a win of his own.  With back to back seconds, could Cooper's turn at the top of podium be next?

The competition is close, and the void left by Hobby Stock All Time win leader Oreta's move up has many racers hungry for victory.  Calvin Louis Jr. didn't look too bad last week as he finished fourth ahead of Cameron Swank.  Louis had a string of Top 5 finishes last year, but he sort of fell out of the action after the passing of his sister.  It was great to see him back out there again.  Likewise, C. Swank could be due for a win.  He held off cousin Jordan Swank for a heat win last week.  There are plenty of talented racers in this division, including Natalie Perry, Frank Furtado and Russell Shearer, and you never know who may win this week.

Antioch Speedway will be the place to be this Saturday night for the big money A Modified race, Spec Sprints, Limited Late Models, B Modifieds and Hobby Stocks.  For further information, check out the official track website at www.antiochspeedway.com

Clifford Collects First Hardtop Win At Placerville Speedway

It was a proud night for feature winner Jason Clifford #4, who battled Dennis Armstrong for his first feature win at Placerville.  Clifford Racing Photo

Placerville, CA...The California Hardtop Association made their first appearance of the Season at Placerville Speedway on Saturday night. It was the first race of an ambitious 2016 schedule filled with many races on the dirt and pavement.  When the checkered flag flew, it was Jason Clifford collecting his first ever Hardtop victory.

With a few of the teams not quite ready to go yet, a field of eight Hardtops towed to the fast quarter mile clay oval located at the El Dorado County Fairgrounds. However, the heat race took a heavy toll on the car count and divided it in half.  Driving the John Philbert #57 car, Jason Armstrong was involved in a tangle with Ron Ruiz, who was finally back behind the wheel of his own #12 car. The tangle eliminated both cars for the night. #1 Dave Mackey and "The Iceman" Ken Clifford #27 were also involved in a crash. Driving the #36 for Bill McLaughlin, Ron Waldrop was also involved in an incident, but the team was able to make repairs to get him out for the Main Event.

An interesting fact, "The Ice Man" Ken Clifford runs a motor that came from the pickup truck of country music legend Merle Haggard. Clifford Racing Photo

A miscommunication left Dave Mackey in the pits when the Main Event came out. Ken Clifford attempted to get his car started, but mechanical problems kept him from taking the green flag. This left a four car field for the feature.  The race was a battle between Jason Clifford and the #77 of Dennis Armstrong, who has been racing out at Placerville Speedway for many years in Stock Cars. Clifford had made several appearances last year in his number #4 car, and he was rapidly improving. On Saturday night, he achieved his ultimate goal as he held off D. Armstrong for his first ever victory. John Turner stayed out of trouble all night long and wheeled the #61 car to a well earned third place finish as Waldrop limped to a fourth place finish.

The next event on the California Hardtop Association calendar is the payment of Lakeport Speedway on April 16th. Their next dirt track race is their first of five scheduled appearances at Antioch Speedway on April 30th. It is anticipated that there should be a few more cars on hand for that event.

Racing A Hardtop A Childhood Dream For Mackey

Driving a Hardtop is something Dave Mackey has wanted to do since watching the cars at Vallejo Speedway.  Mackey Racing Photo

One of the CHA Hardtops anticipated for Antioch Speedway on April 30th will be driven by Dave Mackey.  Mackey has worked with the Perry Racing Team in recent years.  It was just a few years ago when he built his car with the help of Antioch Speedway's All Time Wingless Spec Sprint feature winner, Jim Perry Jr.  "I have said it before, I'm the luckiest guy I know, " Dave admitted.  "I along with Jim Perry Jr. and Andrew Howat and a few others, built the coolest Hardtop ever, and I get to drive it."

This is a car he is very proud of, and he enjoyed building it as much as driving it.  The camaraderie in the garage made it special.  "I know he (Perry) helped me build this car because I asked him too, not so much because he wanted to, " Mackey explained.  "We had a great time doing it.  It is a crowd favorite wherever it goes, but it would have never been what it is without Jim's ability."

Perry took his turn behind the wheel and was a feature winner on multiple occasions, including a late season race at Chico in 2013.  But, Perry opted to step out from behind the wheel.  Mackey wanted to live out his long time dream of driving a Hardtop.  He had been a fan at Vallejo Speedway, but he remarked prior to a hot lap session at Antioch last season that it took him 40 years to finally get to drive one of these cars.

What also made it special to Dave was the paint job.  It is a tribute to one of the great families of Vallejo Speedway racing.  Many people will recall the names of Lee Dudley, "The Napa Flyer" Gene Dudley and Darrell Dudley.  Gene was dominant in a Hardtop in the late 1960's and early 1970's before retiring.  Darrell ran Hardtops a bit and would become a champion in Super Modifieds behind the wheel of Jim Berryhill's car.

The colors ran by open wheel leadfooot "Jammin" Jim Perry Jr. when he won some races driving for Dave Mackey.  Mackey Racing Photo
So, Dave painted it red, white and blue and gave it the #1.  Bailey Brothers is painted on the side.  It's not an exact replica of the Dudley car, but more of a tribute.  He made a couple starts last season, but he's still getting used to it.  Placervillle last Saturday was an eye opener for him.  "After watching the video, I guess I'm not quite the race car driver I thought I was, " he joked.  "I looked like a little old lady out for a Sunday drive."

He hopes that more seat time will fix that.  "I will take it to Antioch on the 30th and give it a run, " Dave announced.  "In the meantime, I will take it to Antioch and do some laps to see if I can get more comfortable going into the turns. Coming out is easy, and the car has plenty of power."

The heat race on Saturday was a learning experience.  There was some contact racing between some of the cars, but Dave missed the feature due to a communication issue.  Perhaps it could have gone differently had he started.  "This #1 car has incredible power, " Mackey explained, "unbelievable to race a car like this, and it handles great on this track."

However, Dave isn't worried about setting any track records or winning every race.  It's about fun to him, and he's on a budget.  "I want everyone to know that as much as I want to drive the car to it's potential, it is more important to keep it in one piece, " he explained.  "The Hardtop division is for fun.  No points, money or championship is at stake.  We do not have time or funds to spend to repair it.  If winning every race was so important to me, I would get Jim to drive it."

The #1 car is scheduled to be at Antioch on April 30th.  Win lose or draw, one thing is for sure, Dave Mackey has built one of the nicest Hardtops running with the CHA.  That's saying something, because the group has some gorgeous race cars.

McCarthy Leads Winged 360 Sprint Cars Back For Round #2
At Antioch Speedway On April 23rd

Antioch, CA...The exciting Winged 360 Sprint Cars make their second of 15 scheduled appearances at Antioch Speedway on Saturday night (April 23rd) on the heels of an exciting show last week.  It was veteran Art McCarthy leading the pack for his big season opening victory.

McCarthy brings impressive credentials with him as a two time champion at Petaluma Speedway and a one time champion at Antioch as well.  He was a two time winner last season, but mid season bad luck forced him to settle for a close second in the standings.  The goal this year is to take it up one more notch.  To that end, McCarthy kicked of the 2016 season with a win ahead of Jarrett Soares.

The lead duo had a good battle up front with McCarthy making the right moves in traffic to claim the victory.  Soares, who has raced his beautiful #12 Sprinter at several venues in recent years, was making his first 360 Sprint Car start at Antioch in a while.  It wasn't a bad night for him.  Like McCarthy, he was a heat race winner on the night, and he still ran strong with his second place feature finish.

Billy Aton's #26 Sprinter was a welcome sight back in the pits.  It wasn't too many years ago when he was the Wingless Spec Sprint champion at the track (2009).  Though he ran some of the Winged Sprint Car races during Craig Smith's championship season (2010) and was a feature winner a year later, he stared racing at other venues while Oval Motorsports figured out the next move for the division.  In the latest race, he showed that he still knows the fast way around the race track with his third place feature finish.

Chris Magoon was the 2014 champion and was in the hunt last season when motor issues ultimately sidelined him for the last couple races.  His #77m was back up and running again, and he managed a respectable fourth place finish.  While that's not where he'd like to be, it's something to build on as he tries to get back into championship winning form.  Like Aton, Magoon is also a past Wingless Spec Sprint champion, winning his title in Marysville.

At the last race, Dan Gonderman's night started a bit rough in his heat race, forcing him to start at the back of the pack in the Main Event.  Gonderman made quick moves around Ricky Brophy, Scott Jaquith and Robby McMahan, but he wasn't quite able to move up further than his lead lap fifth place finish.  After his near victory in last season's finale, the two time Spec Sprint champion hopes to get his first win this year.

Speaking of champions, Chico's Economy Sprint Car champion, Brandon Powell, was in the field last race, but it wasn't the best of nights for him,  Hopefully, he'll get it back together and give it another go on Saturday night (April 23rd).  Who might show up is always in question as drivers tend to show up from everywhere on any given week.  Some we might see include 2015 champion Shawn Arriaga, Jake Haulot and Chase Wood Sr.  For more information on the Sprint Cars and other happenings at the track, check the website at www.antiochspeedway.com

Stone Opens Merced Speedway Season With Win,
Diaz Pays Tribute To Fore With Victory

A new era in Merced Speedway racing has begun, and over 60 race cars filled the pits to usher in the era of Promoter Ed Parker and General Manager Doug Williams.  When Doug Laidlaw's checkered flag flew on the IMCA Modified Main Event, it was 2014 champion Paul Stone scoring the impressive victory.  Michael Shearer dazzled the crowd with his flag to flag romp in the 20 lap Hobby Stock feature, while 2014 champion Chris Corder put on another driving clinic in winning the Mini Stock Main Event.

Before winning in the John Fore Jr. tribute car, Rick Diaz had the car on display under the grandstands and met with fans, including Zoe Sandoval.  Sandoval Family Photo.

The night started on a somber note as the track paid tribute to John Fore Jr. during the opening ceremonies.  Fore, a top 5 IMCA Sport Modified competitor just a couple seasons ago, died in a work related accident prior to the start of the racing season.  The track is running nine lap heat races in Fore's honor this year and has added The John Fore Jr. Memorial Sport Modified Race to the schedule on October 8th.  Paying tribute to his fallen friend, 2014 champion Rick Diaz wheeled the #9d car to the season opening victory in the Sport Modified Main Event.

Doug Laidlaw was a welcome sight back on the flag stand at Merced Speedway after being gone for a few years. He poses with his daughter Chelsea for a picture.  Laidlaw Family Photo

Like his brother and cousins, Paul Stone is a champion, and he's won multiple IMCA Modified titles at both Merced and Hanford.  When he put his fast #66p Stone Motorsports entry on the track Saturday night, the fans found out why he's a champion as he dominated the race in collecting the feature win.  This left the battle for second, and that went in favor of 2011 champion Bill Egleston ahead of Randy Brown. "Rookie Of The Year" hopeful Bruce "Bubba" Nelson won a spirited duel with Ricky Thatcher to finish fourth as Thatcher was lapped late by the flying Stone.  Nelson had to head to the hospital afterwards to be with his wife, Shannon, who just gave birth to their baby boy.  Stone and Nelson won the nine lap heat races.

Get there early.  Cars are mud packing and there's a line waiting to get in.  Photo by Zoe Sandoval.
Rick Diaz was definitely fast in the IMCA Sport Modified feature, but he had his hands full with 2000 Chowchilla Street Stock champion Steve Stone.  Stone ran with him, but Diaz was just a little smoother in collecting the satisfying victory.  Defending champion Josh Hensley grabbed the final podium position, while veteran Gary Tucker made a late move to finish fourth.  Tim Elias was fifth. Nine lap heat race wins went to Diaz, Hensley and Welch.

As if the great racing wasn't enough, there was a local band playing under the grandstands before the races.  Photo by Zoe Sandoval

In the Hobby Stock race, Michael Shearer got behind the wheel of the #73 car that his wife Kristie had raced last season, while she moved over to the #32 car. Michael started up front and set the early pace as Kristie worked her way up from deep in the pack.  Kodie Dean gave chase early on ahead of defending champion Kevin Joaquin.  Jennifer Corder was third in the early goings before an off track excursion dropped her back and gave Joaquin his opening.  Ben Lewis II and Andrew Krumm made it a five car a battle up front while K. Shearer worked her way into sixth.  Just past the midway point, Joaquin slipped past Dean for second, but a lap later, Dean and Joaquin made contact with Joaquin hitting the front wall.  Both drovers restarted in the back.  As M. Shearer led the restart, Krumm and Key battled for second.  On lap 18, K. Shearer made a strong outside move in Turn 2 to pass both of them.  It was a 1-2 finish for Shearer Racing as Michael finished ahead of Kristie.  Krumm settled for third ahead of Lewis and George Silva.  Dean, M. Shearer and Joaquin were the heat race winners.

Announcer Dale Falkenberg in the middle is also working to make race night at Merced Speedway an event that fans won't want to miss.  Photo by Zoe Sandoval

In Mini Stock action, Corder Racing was back as 2014 champion Chris Corder returned and brought rookie Destiny Carter with him.  Corder picked up where he left off last season by winning his heat race and then scoring the feature victory.  Heat race winner Jeff Amos was second with Robert Jackson rounding out the Top 3.  Paul Lauretti was fourth in his first start, followed by Dennis Copus.  Amos and Corder were the heat race winners.

Racing resumes at Merced Speedway next week with IMCA Sport Modifieds headlining the show along with Hobby Stocks, Mini Stocks and the first appearance of the Valley Sportsman division.  For further information, go to the official track website at www.racemerced.com.
Sportsman Division Returns To Merced Speedway

Jeff Bistow #14 gets ready for some practice at the first playday.  Photo by Destiny Carter.

Saturday night racing continues at Merced Speedway this week with the IMCA Sport Modifieds, Hobby Stocks and Mini Stocks being joined by the Valley Sportsman division. It is sure to be a great night of racing on the fast quarter mile dirt oval.

It was a sometimes difficult season last year, but the popular vintage Sportsman division somehow made it through. On Legends Night last year, the division's high car count was reached at 6 cars. The win went to hard charger Eric Seely.

A champion was not crowned last season, though points were tallied and Marcus Lung was the uncrowned champion. Lung won most of the Main Events last season, with other wins being recorded by Sealy and Jeff Bristow. However, the plug got pulled on the division for a couple months, and the future looked to be in doubt.

It was largely thanks to the efforts of Kenny Birdsong and Mike Palmberg that the promoter at the time, John Soares, was convinced to put the division back on the schedule for Legends Night. They responded by giving the track 6 cars, and they were given one more race, won by Lung.

You probably won't find a bigger booster for the division then Birdsong, who had his car at every race last season. Birdsong is very excited about the coming season and has done his best to try to recruit new drivers. In fact, he reports that a couple of new cars are being built that could be debuted at some point this season.

Aside from Lung, Birdsong, Bristow, Sealy and Palmberg, who were the top 5 ranked drivers last season, past champions Mark Odgers and Mike Friesen were the only other drivers to field cars last year. Both drivers competed one time, with Friesen being a part of the 6 car field on Legend's Night.

But, the question remained, what could they do to save the division from extinction? At one time, the division posted a car count in the teens during the early years of the revival. Champions in the early years included two time titlist Friesen, three time champion Kevin Freitas and Keith Van Houten. Van Houten drove a beautiful car built by Bill Baker, who also had Sportsman legend Rod Poor driving for him during the first season in 1999.

Luis Miranda was one of the founders of this division as the idea came about because of him.  He played a major role in convincing promoter Chuck Griffin to start it up again in 1999. Griffin himself was a Sportsman driver back in the 1970's and part of the roster when then promoter Jim Soares pulled the plug on the division in 1980. The departure of The Limited Sprint division in 1998 gave Griffin the opportunity to bring back the division he loved.

It was in the early years when the division was at its strongest with racers like Robb Schropp, Ed Marion, Gary Hildebrand, Billy Mattos, Tim Leidich, Mark Jump and Miranda on the roster. When the Sportsman class started to be able to produce car counts in the 10 to 12 car range, Griffin proposed making the division his headline class in 2001. It was at that point when the drivers had decided to form a sort of club and race at Chowchilla with eyes on Antioch and Stockton.

The division really had a lot of people talking in the early days of the revival, but after the club talk began, the momentum seemed to slow down a bit. Still, Griffin remained committed to this division and continued to book dates even when the car count dropped to 4-6 cars. Racers like Dennis Barcellos, Neill Barcellos, Odgers and Rich Altamirano were the champions during that time.

There might have been concern over the division being dropped as car count wasn't good and Soares was taking over, but they need not have worried. Soares, who himself was the 1969 Petaluma Sportsman champion and State champion and ranks third on the Sportsman division All Time win list at Antioch Speedway, liked the division and wanted to see it continue.

For a while, things started to pick up as Mike Hausmann and Shane Hausmann, both champions in the division (with Mike winning it three times), got on board. Other hard chargers like Tim Prothro and Mike Henault helped make the show special to see. In fact, car count again hit double digits for a time. Unfortunately, that momentum went away once again.

As Henault won the 2014 championship, some of the rules had been changed around with bigger motors being allowed into the fray. This began to upset some of the racers, who parked their cars. This led to the low car counts that were seen last year as the top five drivers were basically the ones keeping it propped up.

Birdsong and Palmberg were the two spearheading the movement to get the drivers back out to the track. Reports are that we should see 6-8 cars showing up for the season opener, and Birdsong further asserts that there could be as many as 12 cars showing up at some point this season. Even if a field of 6-8 cars shows up for these races, it will be an improvement over last year and a start towards rebuilding the class.

Tim Prothro #23 brought his car back for a playday and will be back for more this season.  Photo by Vicki Prothro.

Word is that the top five drivers from last year will return, and Odgers should be seen a time or two as well in his Vern Willhoite tribute car. Furthermore, cars fielded by Jeannie Canepa and Mike Hausmann are said to be coming.  We should be seeing the car of 2014 point runner up Tom Prothro, who was at one of the play days a couple weeks ago. Word is that we will be seeing cars we haven't seen in a year or two.

The Sportsman division hearkens back to the "Glory Days" at Merced Speedway in the 1970's when the winged division was the headliner at tracks in Merced, Watsonville, Antioch and other places across the country. As the modern movement for the Hardtop division brings back nostalgia for those old cars, there is a desire to see the Sportsman division grow and thrive and perhaps even find other race tracks on which to compete.

However, the immediate goal will be to reestablish this division at Merced Speedway. Enthusiasm about virtually everything going on at Merced Speedway is at a high not seen in years. The Sportsman drivers are hoping to capture that momentum and build this class back up again. Their first opportunity will be this Saturday night, and they have 8 more race dates set for April 23rd, May 14th, May 21st, June 18th, July 16th, August 6th, August 13th and September 17th.

McCarthy, Ahlwardt Share Antioch Speedway Winner's Circle

The Winged 360 Sprint Cars entertained the crowd Saturday night at Antioch Speedway as last year's point runner up, Art McCarthy, opened their season with a Main Event victory.  Making only his second start, rookie Guy Ahlwardt held off two of last season's biggest stars to notch his first 20 lap Hobby Stock win. In the B Modified 20 lapper, Anthony Giuliani rebounded from last week's nightmare for the win. David Teves was back in championship form with his win in the 20 lap Dwarf Car feature.  Craig Dillard claimed the honors in the 20 lap BCRA Midget Lites Main Event.

Last season, open wheel veteran Art McCarthy ended the Winged 360 Sprint Car season with a Main Event victory.  He picked up right where he left off with a win in their season opener.  The race was destined to go non stop, and it didn't come easy.  The stage was set for this showdown after both McCarthy and Jarrett Soares won heat races.  McCarthy and Soares found themselves in a battle up front for most of the Main Event.  When the checkered flag waved, it was past Antioch champion  McCarthy sending a message to the rest of the competition that he may be the man to beat in this season's championship battle.  McCarthy forced Soares to settle for second, and past Wingless Spec Sprint champion Billy claimed the final podium position.  2014 champion Chris Magoon returned to finish fourth ahead of two time Spec Sprint champion Dan Gonderman.

In the Hobby Stocks, Guy Ahlwardt had a front row start in his beautiful #10 car, and he was ready to make the most of it.  He jumped out to the lead at the waving of Robert Kempf's green flag and kept his foot to the floor.  It wasn't easy with last week's runner up Michael Cooper and Week 1 winner Danny Jones shadowing his every move for the entire race.  However, Ahlwardt was not about to let it slip away as he kept his cool and brought it home to a well earned victory in the non stop race.  Cooper was forced to settle for second ahead of Jones, Calvin Louis Jr. and Cameron Swank.  Cooper was a heat race winner on the night along with C. Swank.

A four time B Modified winner in his visits to the speedway last year, Anthony Guiliani had high hopes coming into this season, but his season opening run was a disappointing effort.  However, he turned things around in a big way Saturday night by holding off last season's point runner up, Al Johnson.  Johnson was hot on the trail of his first win, but he settled for another career best second place finish.  Brian Pearce ran a steady race to finish third.  After winning his heat race, Trevor Clymens was a disappointed fourth as Shane DeVolder rounded out the Top 5 at the checkered flag.

Despite heavy Dwarf Car activity in California this week, 12 cars showed up for the Antioch race.  Defending champion David Teves had a DNF last week, but he rebounded in a big way by charging to an impressive feature victory.  Coming off of his strong winning performance last week, tenth starter Mike Corsaro brought it home second with Kevin Miraglio finishing a strong third for his second consecutive Top 3 performance.  Jack Haverty was fourth and Josh Miller completed the Top five after winning his heat race earlier in the evening.  Miraglio was the other heat winner.

The BCRA Midget Lites were making their first of two scheduled appearances at the speedway, and the battle up front was a crowd pleaser between defending series champion Craig Dllard and Australia native Scott Males.  In the end, Dillard would prevail with Males settling for a strong second.  Dakota Albright grabbed the final podium position as Roy Moody finished fourth.

Next week, the A Modifieds kick off their season with a $1,000 to win Main Event.  Also on the card will be a $400 to win B Modified race, Winged 360 Sprint Cars, Limited Late Models and Hobby Stocks.  It should be a great night of racing.  For further information, check out the official website at www.antiochspeedway.com.

Winged 360 Sprint Cars Back In A Big Way
At Antioch Speedway

Promoter John M. Soares has thrown in with the Winged 360 Sprint Cars in a big way at Antioch Speedway this season. Since expanding the track to a three-eighth mile clay oval in 2009, the goal has always been to establish a Winged Sprint Car class.  Last season was the busiest season yet for the division with eight events.  This year, Soares has doubled that with 16 race dates, and the season kicks off this Saturday night.

One of the things the track has going for it is a tacky, hooked up racing surface most nights, which is something Soares prides himself on.  The track last season was also generally very smooth.  Another strong suit was that Soares paid as advertised last season with a minimum $150 to start and $1200 to win, even when car count dipped to five cars one night.  The bottom line is that Soares and Oval  Motorsports wants Sprint Car racing at Antioch Speedway.

For those who doubt the track's commitment to open wheel racing, the Wingless Spec Sprint division that several tracks currently run started at Antioch Speedway in 1999.  Soares had a vision of Sprint Car racing for the low buck racer, and he put Don O'Keefe Jr. in charge of spear heading the establishing of the class in what was a successful launch back in 1999.  It turns out that Soares was right as that division will enter its 18th season with their opener set for April 9th.

One of the Winged 360 Sprint Car competitors anticipated this week will be third generation racer Shawn Arriaga.  Arriaga was able to win the championship last season on the strength of his second win of the season in the second to last race.  Shawn comes from a long line of competitive racers, starting with his grandfather, Gill Richardson, in Hardtops at Vallejo Speedway.  His mother, Cheri Hill, is a past 360 Sprint Car competitor and feature winner at Antioch.  Has father, Fred Arriaga, raced Super Modifieds at San Jose Speedway.  In fact, Fred will probably see some Sprint Car action this season.

The one driver who has been there for the Oval Motorsports Sprint Car races at Antioch going back to the first races in 1998, Art McCarthy, is anticipated as well.  McCarthy's impressive racing pedigree includes two Petaluma Speedway championships (Arriaga won one there as well) and an Antioch title.  Art opened and closed last season with feature wins, but a couple of tough breaks during the season forced him to settle for second.

Another driver with impressive credentials who is anticipated this week is Dan Gonderman.  The Gonderman family has raced at Antioch for decades.  Dan's father, Ken Gonderman, is the 1970 Sportsman champion, and he continues to pit for him.  Dan has won Main Events and ranked Top 5 in Dirt Modifieds and Hobby Stocks, and he won several features and two championships in Wingless Spec Sprints.  Last season's finale probably would have gone to Gonderman if not for misfortune in lapped traffic while leading half way through the event.  He is coming off of a solid fourth place ranking.

Chris Magoon was the champion in 2014, and he is also a past Spec Sprint champion at Marysville.  Last year was a season that saw the team struggle and fall out of the chase with mechanical issues.  However, the team has regrouped and is ready to come back strong this season.  While these four have been strong supporters of the division these past two years, who else is coming is subject to speculation.

The Haulot Racing Team is likely to see at least some action this year.  Last year, Jake Haulot ranked third in points with two feature wins.  This season, we hear rumblings that Jake's younger brother  might be making his division debut.  Speaking of  young up and comers, Robby McMahon was seen at playday making some laps.  The second generation racer finished last season strong with a second place finish in the season finale.  2015 Chico Winged Economy Sprint Car champion Brandon Powell was also seen at playday and could be on hand for the opener.

One thing is for sure, Antioch Speedway is committed to building this class, and drivers will see a smooth and hooked up racing surface more often than not when they come racing.  This division has produced some exciting and interesting results these past two seasons, and that should continue to be the case this year.

Also On Tap At Antioch Speedway This Week

The BCRA Midget Lites will make their first of two appearances this Saturday, while Hobby Stocks, Sport Mods and Dwarf Cars are also in action.  The Hobby Stock division promises to be a wide open affair this season, which is good news for the fans.

Danny Jones definitely brings the experience over the rest of pack, having raced on and off since the late 1970's.  Danny finally got the monkey off his back last week with an impressive feature win. His 2015 season featured several second place finishes, but that win eluded him. Last week, Michael Cooper shadowed him for most of that race.  Cooper is still searching for his first win, and if he keeps driving like that, he'll get it soon.  Likewise, brother in law Jordan Swank looked good in his third place battle with rookie Guy Ahlwardt,  Guy is hoping to succeed Swank as the division's top rookie this year.

These lead four cars aren't the only ones to watch in the quest for victory this season.  Certainly, 2010 division champion Chris Sorensen has to be considered.  Chris had two wins last season, and he finished fifth last week.  Jason Jennings looked good in preliminaries but his night ended too early.  Steven Rogers also started off well, but his night sort of went down hill.  Both of these drivers should not be counted out in the quest for victory.  It wouldn't be a big surprise to see several drivers win this season.

There are drivers in the Sport Mod division hoping for the same, but they have a problem.  Defending champion Fred Ryland is still in the pack and has notched over 40 feature wins in his Antioch career.  In fact, "Fast Freddy" is tenth on the track's all time win list, having just passed legend Bobby Hogge III.  One driver hoping to thwart Ryland's repeat plans is Trevor Clymens.  When you can't win, finishing second doesn't hurt, and Trevor did just that after his heat race win earlier in the evening.

Patti Ryland normally does pretty well when things are running right, and her season opening effort produced a solid third place finish ahead of Brian Pearce.  Pearce hasn't been seen at the speedway in recent seasons, but he is a past Top 10 driver in Dirt Modifieds.  The Sport Mods fit better with his  budget, and he looked good in his first time back.  K.C. Keller also got it to the line in the Top 5.  Anthony Giuliani had four wins last season, but his opener ended with him on the sidelines.  It will be interesting to see if  F. Ryland's luck continues to hold and if somebody will emerge to challenge him this season.

David Teves entered the first Dwarf Car race as the defending champion and presumptive "Man To Beat" this year.  However, his first race ended too early.  One of the drivers looking to make his mark on the championship battle this year is Mike Corsaro.  Coming off of his Top 5 effort last season, Mike beat the competition handily in the opener.  However, second place finisher Kevin Miraglio had to be heartened by the fact that he just had his best Antioch finish ever.  That win is lurking right around the corner.

Josh Miler was on a mission last week, but the laps wound down before he could make a move on Miraglio.  His late charge still netted him a strong third place finish.  It was Miranda Chappa notching a career best fourth place finish ahead of Brian Gray.  Fifth was one of Gray's best efforts in a Dwarf Car, but Brian has won features in his career in Winged 360 Sprint Cars, Wingless Spec Sprints and Late Models.  He's just out there having fun, but he could still surprise the competition and make a bid for a win on any given night.

Through several racers headed to Marsyville to compete with the Nor Cal Dwarf Cars last week, the Dwarf Cars still had 13 cars.  Charlie Correia was a welcome sight after being sidelined last season  with a separated shoulder from his crash in the Merced Speedway Fairtime race.  Car count is likely to have a slight bounce this week in Dwarf Cars, and if Correia and Teves have their cars running late in the race, it just might be that the #0 and #08 cars are running at the front of the pack.  Whatever the case, the Dwarf Cars put on an exciting show every week.

Corder Racing Is About more Than Winning,
It's About Family

Chris Corder gets a trophy in bis season ending clean sweep last year at Chowchilla.

Down in Modesto, there's a racing team that has quietly emerged as one of the top Mini Stock teams in California.  That would be Corder Racing.  Driving the red #68c car, Chis Corder is already a two time Mini Stock champion.  And, his sister Jennifer has already racked up back to back runner up seasons racing at Merced Speedway.

Rewinding back to 2011 on the pavement of Stockton 99 Speedway, the brother and sister duo ran the Basically 4 Cylinder division, where Jennifer ranked fifth that season.  Chris finished just outside the Top 10 in 12th, but he moved up to 7th a year later while Jennifer repeated her fifth place status.  While Jennifer slipped back just a bit to seventh in 2013, Chris stepped it up and had a strong season in third.  He also ran a Pure Stock that year and was ninth.

But, the two decided it was time to head down Highway 99 to the dirt of Merced Speedway.  The team's shop, C&C Wholesale of Modesto, was adding cars, and these days they have about a half dozen Mini Socks.  In fact, Chris added a yellow Mini Truck earlier this year, which would have been perfect in the division Merced had back in the 1990's.  "Another addition to Corder Racing, " he remarked at the time.  "Should be fun.  I'm thinking I need a 2 story parking garage."

In 2014, Chris and Jennifer hit Merced Speedway like a tidal wave as they ranked first and second in  the Mini Stock class.  In fact, teammate Brian Widdowson made it a Corder Racing sweep of the podium that year.  Things were looking up for the team.  Jennifer went through with her plans to move up to Hobby Stocks for a run at "Rookie Of The Year" honors, while Chris set his sights on a repeat.

Chris Corder ended his season with some big wins in this car.

On January 4th of 2015, Chris grabbed one of the biggest wins of his career in the West Coast Nationals at Chowchilla.  The victory firmly established him as the driver to beat in that track's championship battle.  It was in March of that year when tragedy struck the Corder family with the passing of Chris and Jennifer's father, Chris Corder Sr.

Rather than slow down, the two decided to pay tribute to him by racing hard and going about succeeding in their goals.  Chris got off to a strong start, despite no wins at Merced, and he was the early point leader.  He led at Chowchilla as well.  Jennifer was in command in the Hobby Stock rookie battle, and she soon found herself ranked second in points.  Though the win was eluding her, she managed to pick up some Top 5 finishes and was learning more every week.

But for Chris, he couldn't seem to get that Merced win no matter what he did.  As a staunch supporter of Mini Stocks, he often provided two cars to the cause, and it was Robert Alger picking up a win for the team during the first half of the season.  Chris soon lost the lead to the red hot Darren Miguel, who was winning everything in sight.  He was joined in the pits by another teammate, past champion Alex Odishoo.

Alex Odishoo and Chris Corder both won features in this car last season.

It wasn't all stress over points, however.  Corder supplied a couple of Mini Stocks to a special July 4th weekend, three day Rodeo Arena Figure 8 event at the Alameda County Fair.  He shared driving duties with Widdowson and Mat Schlessinger.  It was a fun experience for the team, and the crowd enjoyed the show.  Even better, Corder Racing took home an $1100 paycheck for their time.

Though Chowchilla seemed to be well in hand for Chris, he wanted a win at Merced.  Odishoo was looking for a win as well in his red, white and blue #48 car, but he was fighting a problem that saw his car run strong, only to misfire with about five laps to go in the Main Event.  Alex did finally get a win at Chowchilla before selling his car and those problems to Corder.  This was a risky move for Chris, who could ill afford to lose points to Miguel if he wanted to win that championship.

Chris was determined to get that car to run right, and he did.  He solved the motor problem and grabbed a win with six races to go in the season.  Then, he grabbed another win, and another.  Suddenly, we had a show down brewing between Corder and Miguel, and he was heading into the last race with a shot.  The car change might have hurt him in the second to last race, but Chris knew he had a winning car.

Meanwhile, Jennifer's goal turned out even better than she had hoped.  She easily won "Rookie Of The Year" honors, but she also finished second in the standings.  Chris dabbled in the Hobby Stock class, but his lone appearance resulted in a blown motor.  Rather than worry about that, he focused his efforts on the Mini Stocks.  This included the beautiful blue #24 car, which was the last car built by his dad.  Jennifer got behind the wheel and took it to a fourth place finish.

Jennifer Corder got to wheel the car her father built a couple times late in the season.

Entering the finale, Chris did all he could.  He collected his fourth win in the last six events.  Miguel was not far behind him, meaning Miguel won the championship, but only by two points.  Chris was the Chowchilla champion, however, and he ended the season at that track by sweeping the heat, main and dash in the final race that year.  Not a bad way to end a season, but he wasn't done.

Chris headed to Porterville in November for the special Turkey Shootout race, and he won the big money race there.  At this point, there truly was no hotter driver on the Mini Stock circuit in California than Chris Corder.  With all of the racing done, Chris got a party bus to make sure he and his friends could go to the awards banquet in Antioch and celebrate in style.

Though he has found his niche, he's not just sticking with Mini Stocks.  He does have a Sport Mod in the works.  Teammate Alex Odishoo also has a rather nice looking Sport Mod, which means that eventually the two friends will be battling for position in another division.

But, Corder Racing has added a new teammate to their ranks.  It's young Destiny Carter.  For years, Destiny and her mother Dawn Carter went to Merced Speedway.  When Dawn lived back east, she had a local track that she grew up at, and she wanted that for her daughter.  From the time before she could even crawl, Destiny has been going to Merced Speedway.  As she grew up, she caught that racing bug.

Destiny Carter gets to live out her dream of racing thanks to Corder Racing.

Destiny has done what she can to help the track through promoting it on social media.  When she could help a team during the week and learn about race cars, she would do it.  On race day, she would help too, and that led her to the Corder Racing pit area.  Knowing Destiny's passion for the sport, and given the strength she has shown in difficult times, which includes maintaining good grades in school, Chris put a car together for her.

Destiny is excited about racing this season.  "I don't know how much more I can ask for, " she admitted.  "This year will be my rookie year of racing.  As much as I'm excited, I am so nervous, but I will be doing it for my mom. I couldn't ever thank these guys enough for welcoming me into the family and giving me this opportunity."

Destiny put a lot of thought into the car number and the colors on the car.  She will run the #82c.  This is not a reference to former Merced and Chowchilla competitor Dennis Clay, who had the same number.  The #8 is her favorite number and #2 is the age in which she became an aunt for the first time.  The c, of course, is for Corder Racing.  The purple on the car is her mother's favorite color, and the blue is Corder Racing blue.

Another shot of Destiny Carter's Mini Stock ride. Fred Baker of BRC Race Cars stepped up big last year to help cover Dawn Carter's funeral cost and with the assist of the guys at PitStopUSA.com pitched in to get Destiny a helmet this season.  Photo by Destiny Carter

Destiny's first practice had some mechanical issues, but she still got to take the car out on the racing surface for the first time.  Last week, she experienced a bit of excitement with some contact on the track, but she still learned quite a bit.  "I'm feeling it today, " she admitted the next day.  "I'm officially a racer. First door slam of my career, but I felt like I did good and my family is proud, so I'm happy."

Destiny eagerly awaits the season opener on Saturday (April 2) which features Mini Stocks along with IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sport Modifieds and Hobby Stocks,  She knows her mother will be looking down from above and still very proud of her, not just because she is living her dream of being a race car driver.  Destiny continues to move forward in life despite the setbacks, and she's giving it 100% effort every day.

As for Chris Corder, there's no bragging coming from him.  He's done some good things in a race car and put other racers behind the wheel, but he's not looking for the accolades.  It's just the kind of guy he is.  "Chris continues to amaze me with his kindness and generosity, " said long time friend Frank Lopez. "I have always told people he is the guy who would give the shirt off his back to someone in need, and he continues to do things like this. I'm sure Destiny is a great young lady, and I'm glad she has this racing community behind her."

So, Corder Racing will be well represented at Merced Speedway this year.  You'll have Jennifer Corder in her blue #13 Hobby Stock as she pursues her first feature victory.  Chris will be back, as will the #48 Sport Mod of Alex Odishoo.  And, there will be Destiny Carter as well.  It really is  people like Chris and Jennifer Corder and the whole team who hep make Merced Speedway such a special place to race.
