Simmons came from the third row to win the Saturday race ahead of Pahrump, Nevada racer Jason Pike, Chris Neiman, Jake Pike and Scott Foreman. Matt Murphy outran Pettit and Shawn LaRocque to win the first of two B Mains. Chris Olexiewicz won the second race ahead of Malen Gonzalez and Santa Maria racer Danny Lauer. There were six eight lap heat races, won by Gene Kay, Olexiewicz, Jimmy Lipke, James Thibodeaix, reigning champion Ryan McDaniel and Simmons.

Pettit not only avoided the B Main on Sunday, he had a front row start and outduled the father and son duo of Jason Pike and Jake Pike to get the win. Jake Pike ended up second ahead of Jason Pike, Zach Cail and Buddy Kniss. Darrell Hughes II came from the fourth row to win the first B Main ahead of polesitter Matt Murphy and Wade Kennemore. Jimmy Lipke won the second race ahead of 2019 State champion Trevor Fitzgibbon and Kathy Sample. The eight lap heat race wins went to Kniss, Simmons, Jason Pike, Bill Pearson, Raymond Lindemann and Jake Pike. While Simmons has a commanding lead in the championship battle, Chris Nieman only has a 17 point advantage over Wade Kenmore in a closer race for second.

Yreka star Ryan Peery showed why he is the point leader at Siskiyou Golden Speedway by winning the Main Events on both Saturday and Sunday night. On Saturday night, Peery started on the front row and held off Antioch star Mark Garner for the victory. Past Nevada State IMCA Modified champion Robert Miller came from the fifth row in brother Randy Miller's car to finish third ahead of Phillip Shelby and Jimmy Ford. Tyler Rogers came from the third row to win the B Main ahead of track point leader Richard Longacre and past Cottage Grove Speedway champion David Schmidt. Kenny Shrader, Peery, Garner, State point leader Trevor Clymens, Craig Nieman and Shelby won the eight lap heat races.

On Sunday, Peery again got the win from the front row in a battle with fellow front row starter Shelby, who settled for second, followed by Miller, Schmidt and Longacre. The eight lap heat race wins went to Peery, Miller, Cole Olexiewicz and Clymens. A look at the standings finds Longacre holding a  six point advantage over Colton Chew in a close battle. Ryan Belli is 41 points out of the lead, but he leads Craig Neiman by three points and Shayna Nieman by four tallies in a closer battle for third.

The Hobby Stocks also had a strong turnout with wins going to Royce Goetz on Saturday and Terry Kennemore on Sunday. Goetz started the Saturday feature on the second row and got the lead relatively quickly. From the 6th row, point leader Randy Boyd battled his way up to second to finish ahead of championship contender Jacob Dias, Bakersfield star Johnny Wood and Tom Haxall. Boyd had to win the B Main to get into the feature race while Richard Italiano and Madison Hood finished second and third, respectively. JT Stack, Royce Goetz, Douglas Weeks, Wood and Jacob Dias won the eight lap heat races.

The Sunday feature found Terry Kennemore starting on the pole and battling second row starter Goetz to pick up the win. Wood finished third ahead of  Joe Conway and Carl Barlow. Kennemore, Haxall, Goetz and Conway picked up the eight lap heat race wins. Boyd holds an 18 point lead over Dias in the championship battle with Don Dieter trailing by 35 markers.

Multi-time Orland Raceway champion Tom Davis once again invaded the Mini Stock division and picked up the wins on both Saturday and Sunday. He now has five feature wins. The Sunday race found Davis starting on the pole and scoring the win ahead of Kate Robertson, Nick Boucher, new point leader Suzie Schmitt and an unidentified driver in the #83 car. Davis and Schmidt won the eight lap heat races.

Davis again had a pole position start on Sunday and outran Boucher for the victory. Bob Kelly ended up third, followed by an unidentified driver in the #5 car and Schmitt. Kate Robertson ended up disqualified on this occasion. Davis, Schmitt and Boucher won the eight lap heat races. The Robertson disqualification put Schmitt into the lead by 15 points ahead of Robertson while Kelly is 81 points out of the lead in third.

Track Promoter Jeff Olschowka got behind the wheel and picked up the Saturday night Tri State Pro Stock Challenge Series Main Event win, while Robert Miller won the race on Sunday. Olschowka had to battle his way from the fourth row and got around track point leader Jay Sears for the lead and victory. Sears settled for second ahead of Miller, Chris Smith and Ryan Smith. Sears and Ryan Smith won the eight lap heat races. The Sunday race found Miller winning from the pole ahead of reigning Western Pro Stock champion Justin Crockett, Kenny Schmitt and Olschowka. Miller won the eight lap heat race. The track now lists Sears as the point leader by two tallies ahead of Crockett, five in front of Ryan Smith and six over Olschowka.

The Nevada based Battleborn Sprint Cars competed on both nights with Nick Purdy winning on Saturday and Larry Tachovsky claiming the victory on Sunday. On Saturday, Purdy started on the second row and battled Bruce Ferrier and Tachovsky. In the end, Purdy claimed the prize ahead of Tachovsky, Ferrier, Grasen Tenora and Jordan Garretson. Tachovsky won the eight lap heat race. Tachovsky had a pole position start on Sunday and battled Garretson for the win as Purdy settled for third ahead of Tenora and Ferrier. Tachovsky also won the eight lap heat race. After six events, the track has released a point list for this group, and Ferrier holds a one point advantage over the tied Tachovsky and Purdy. Ferrier and Tachovsky each have two wins while Purdy is a one-time winner.

Racing resumes this Saturday night with the regular IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sport Modifieds, Hobby Stocks and Mini Stocks sharing the bill. For further information, go to www.dmspeedway.com.

The Editor's Viewpoint

I started writing this column Sunday morning, and it went on and on. I decided to make a second attempt. It's Monday morning after what was a fairly busy weekend of racing. Though some tracks didn't run, others made up for it by having two or even three races for the weekend. With the weather cooling off a little bit here and the internet deciding it wanted to function, I was able to get back into my usual routine. If I'm not going to be at a race track and I'm going to be doing the media effort, I prefer having different scoring apps going as I jot down notes in real time.

The biggest problem with this column as well as this blog is that I don't know when to say enough. I've always had the attitude of wanting to cover as much as possible. I will keep adding to it until it is too much. It was supposed to be an easier blog after this year, but I'm generally covering a dozen races per week. This column just goes on and on, and then I dread going through the editing process. Between this usually lengthy column and all of the review articles I do, editing takes too long. I've grown tired of editing, especially knowing that there's still a deadline involved, even if it's not a rigid deadline.

Obviously, I have no intentions of dropping any of the racing blogs that I have created as long as I have the choice. You never know what the company I'm dealing with will do, but I'll keep it going if I can. However, I need to get more into the nostalgia mode and work on books beyond the one that I hope to release at the end of the year or early next year. The books that follow the next book will be more history related, and I think I have something to offer that people might be interested in. With the busy media effort that I do during the season, it just doesn't work. Can I maintain any kind of a media effort after this year that would be worthy?

What I've been contemplating, in addition to creating a DCRR webpage and possible message board, is getting more into audio and video stuff. There's time involved in creating that stuff, but writing about all of the tracks takes even longer. I'm not only looking to make it easier on myself, I'm also looking at any possibility of generating revenue. Time is money, and I've obviously done a lousy job with my time when you put it next to the money measuring stick. So be it. I am looking to make a change with the audio stuff that we do, in style and where it's hosted.

Not to drag this on too long, but I think I can cover a lot of different stuff using audio, and it's easier for people to digest. They can play the half an hour or hour-long show and get that information without sitting down and reading a bunch of articles. I will never give up writing, because that's what I do. However, blog posts can become special interest stories about whatever topic, Pit Stops columns or whatever and it would be easier to edit. That's what I'm thinking on a Monday morning when it comes to the future of DCRR Racing Media. I want to put the books first. You never know how much time you've got on this planet, and there are certain things I'd like to put out there for people who might be interested in reading them.

The Jefferson State Racing News blog has an article in the pipeline where I look at Mountain Valley Raceway in Hayfork and Orland Raceway. I have a few thoughts and observations from these tracks. The Hayfork track has been around for 10 years. Josh Smith is the current promoter, but I'm not sure how many others have been there before him. The important thing is they've kept the gates open at one of the most unlikely racing venues anywhere on the West Coast. They just had a meeting recently, and it was announced that they will pay $1,500 to win the Hobby Stocks and $1,000 to win the Mini Stocks if they can get 10 cars in those classes this Saturday night.

Without getting too wordy, what I will say is they need to focus on building the community there. They need to get racers who want to be there on any given Saturday night and get the fans wanting to come out to watch. While bigger prize money might attract the guys from Orland or wherever, they need to persuade the locals to want to be out there. Without them, there is no show. The Mini Stocks and Hobby Stocks have a double digit roster in the area, though they're not all showing up. The Enduro class does as well. The question ought to be, how do we make these guys want to come out here and how do we build a nice little show? I can honestly say their show should have developed further along after 10 years, but the revolving door promoter situation has certainly not helped.

The reason classes like Hobby Stocks, Mini Stocks and Enduros are what a new track might use to build up a roster is because these are the more affordable divisions to start with. They don't require a big purse, and you can get them up to double digits relatively quickly. That means a couple of heats, a dash and a Main Event. This should be the priority. Building the infrastructure, building the roster, spreading the word in Hayfork and surrounding towns and turning this into something special. They can get a good roster from the classes they have. Once they do that, they can even entertain bringing in bigger series. I'll write more on the subject in the upcoming article on the Jefferson State Racing News blog.

I've been the biggest critic of the Winged Crate Sprint division, which has been around now for approaching 10 years. I felt like Marysville Raceway and Silver Dollar Speedway had a thriving Wingless SPEC Sprint class, and this division divided the roster and decimated the SPEC Sprints, while not really growing its own ranks. However, they've had five races at Marysville and two at Chico this year, and the car count has never dropped below 10.

This is progress, and I'm going to cautiously praise them. My hope is that I don't jinx them by saying this. I'm a fan of the Limited Winged Sprint class and liked what they had at Merced Speedway back in the 1990s. It was even cooler when they were the Cal Mods in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Chuck Griffin was the one who seemed to kill the momentum every time they had it.

I recognize that there are people who insist on having wings, but I don't necessarily think the Crate Sprint division is needed as a feeder class for Winged 360 Sprints. New drivers are coming into that class anyway, and competing shows at Placerville and Chico on Sunday delivered over 60 cars and B Mains at both tracks. What the Crate Sprints can do is give the budget minded racer a taste a Sprint Car racing. Maybe they get good at this class and over time get the sponsorship needed to move up. You might get Stock Car people into Sprint Cars in the same way that Wingless SPEC Sprints accomplished that.

I would like to see this division grow beyond just getting 10 cars. If they can get up in the high teens, it becomes possible for Marysville to book just a Crate Sprint show now and then without Winged 360 Sprint Cars on the card. First of all, that would give the 360 guys a break or keep Marysville from competing against the bigger show they don't have a chance against. Secondly, you're not talking the same purse money for Crate Sprints. If you've got enough of those cars on the track, only the purists will complain about them not being "real" Sprint Cars. The average fan will see a bunch of cars on the track and be entertained by it. My hope Is that the Crate Sprint's momentum doesn't end here as it did before. 10 cars is nice, but 20 would be better.

This is where I really got wordy in my initial attempt to write this column but not this time. Southern Oregon Speedway sort of laid an egg this week with the Battle Of The Borders $2,500 to win Late Model race. There was $4,500 in money going out to just the Top 3 finishers, and the division only delivered 13 cars. I was apprehensive about them booking this race as I think it would have been wiser to be cautious about too many big events coming a year after the pandemic, but I'll leave it at that. They went for it, and at least that shows that they cared about the class. My biggest concern is that they may abandon Late Models when they start taking a look at the numbers. There's always been a Late Model class in Medford for the taking. It just took former Promoter Mike McCann to start putting it together the right way.

The fact that the car count failed to get where it could have wasn't just management's fault. They had no control over Willamette Speedway booking a $1,500 to win 100 lap show that would pull 15 cars, knowing fully well that they were booking on top of the bigger paying purse down in Southern Oregon. I think the biggest mistake they made in Medford was assuming everybody was just going to be there. There was an outside shot, without Willamette booking what they did, of getting 20 cars. However, they couldn't do that merely by putting up a schedule or even having their announcer/TV guy talk about it on the local news.

It boils down to these guys having to figure out what they're doing, how to book a schedule and all of that. They've done good things with the facility itself, but now it's about putting cars on the track and making people want to be there. The first thing they should be doing is working harder on social media and have somebody on the scene who can write an article. Though I like the fact that they got a TV guy to announce, that's only one piece of the puzzle.

Did anybody down there notice what I was doing for the four years that I was involved there? I'm not trying to brag or any of that. I'm just saying there were articles written all the time, social media, video shares and whatever it took, and it made a difference. I've already pointed out that they could pick up the phone and call Daren Ricks Campbell, and they'd have a guy who could do it right. The people down there know who he is.

Without stretching this too much longer, the cancellation of the race in Yreka due to the fires presented Medford management with the opportunity to add the Southern Oregon Dwarf Cars and Mini Stocks to assure that there would be a car count. As SODCA was scheduled to race at Yreka on Saturday, I don't think the Medford-based group would have had an issue moving the race to their home track. I know the Mini Stock guys would have been there with bells on as several of them were planning to go to Yreka as it was. This is what we call a missed opportunity. They are also finding out that attendance in the grandstands isn't guaranteed. Let's just say, the numbers weren't great, but the social and general media effort that I'm talking about would have helped a little bit at least.

I find it interesting that dueling Winged 360 Sprint Car shows at Chico and Placerville produced a 32 car field at both venues. Yeah, the Winged 360 Sprint Cars are one of the strongest classes in California at the moment. I'm not sure what to make of the previous weekend, where dueling IMCA Modified shows with bigger purses produced nine cars at Antioch and 13 at Bakersfield. Yeah, you've got the IMCA Sport Modifieds nipping at their heels. I will also point out that we're coming out of the other end on the pandemic, and I warned going back to last year that declining numbers in the pits and the grandstands would be a reality.

I'm not sure how management at Madera, Orland, Petaluma and Merced might have felt about running on 4th of July weekend. From what I've seen, the attendance wasn't great at any of these venues. Then again, Orland hasn't been doing much to build an attendance, and their car count is down a bit this year. Madera has struggled for the last couple of Club Races, while the MavTV Series stuff is doing okay. It's just that when you put divisions on the track that can't even reach double digits, and that's all of your divisions, fans have less incentive to come out and watch. I can't say what the attendance was like in Madera, although I doubt it was that good. The car count was less than desired.

Merced and Petaluma are two tracks that stayed away from the 4th of July in recent weeks, but Merced was anxious to get some cars on the track during the County Fair. Management actually booked that show in a smart way. There was nothing with a big purse at the track, and four of the five classes produced double digits. Even the California Sharp Mini Late Models had nine cars.

I was pleased to see 11 Sportsman cars as that division tries to rally back. I was even happier to see 10 IMCA Stock Cars considering they were running against the bigger race at Sunset Speedway in Oregon. All in all, the show was okay from a car count standpoint, but I would guess management will be nervous with the USAC West Coast 360 Sprint Cars around the corner.

Petaluma Speedway had to give up the Winged 360 Sprint Car show they booked so that the drivers could support the SCCT race in Stockton. Management decided to throw the 600 Micro Sprints on the schedule with $500 more in the purse and got a decent 16 car turnout. The Dwarf Cars had around 20, but how would the IMCA Modifieds do with $1,500 to win and a minimum of $200 to start?

The answer was 13 cars, the same as they had at the previous extra money affair two weeks earlier. I don't think it helped them the way they hoped, and attendance wasn't spectacular. The one thing putting the money up for these guys did do is serve notice to the IMCA Modified crowd that the track cares about this class and appreciates what they bring to the table.

I was critical of Sunset Speedway running a $5,000 to win IMCA Stock Car race on Sunday. I know Jerry Schram probably has the money to throw at that deal, and he's certainly invested in this class. Part of it was his attempt to send a message to the rebelling Street Stock class that he didn't need them. That's why IMCA Stock Cars got the foothold they did in Oregon. Furthermore, Jerry is selling cars and competing in one.

My contention is promoters need to be cautious about when and where to put the extra money on the line, especially as we come out of the pandemic and money is tighter than normal. Should the IMCA Stock Cars have a $5,000 to win race is my question? I guess they can if the promoter wants to pay the money, although I'm not sure it's a wise move.

I thought there would be more California participation, but other than the two Gallaher cars, it was mostly Oregonians and some Washington racers. They had enough cars that they had to run a B Main as car count reached the mid-20s. It's kind of interesting that Hanford and Bakersfield have been running this class for how long now, but the first track to reach 20 cars for the IMCA Stock Cars on the West Coast was in Banks, Oregon this past weekend. Granted, it took the big prize money to get them there, but I would classify the two race weekend they just had as successful with solid turnouts for this class, Northwest Dwarf Cars, IMCA Modifieds and 600 Micro Sprints.

Cottage Grove Speedway did the Freedom Cup. This was a three-race weekend series with point fund money on the line and regular purse money for each race. I was critical a few years ago of Heather Boyce when she bucked the trend the other promoters were a part of in adding the IMCA Sport Modifieds to the Wild West Speedweek Series. She didn't feel she needed to do that for whatever reason, but to show that she cared about the Sport Modifieds, she created the Freedom Cup with some initial sponsorship help from Chris Frisbie. This has developed into a special weekend and also includes IMCA Modifieds and Todd's Auto Body Limited Sprint Cars, and I have to give Heather credit for that.

Car count was solid on all three nights, and the Saturday portion delivered B Mains for all three divisions. I'm not so sure about the point system they are using. The point fund champions were Jorddon Braaten in the IMCA Sport Modifieds, Jesse Williamson in the IMCA Modifieds and Johnny Burke in the Todd's Auto Body Limited Sprints. The Top 10 drivers in points got money with $1,000 to the champions and a minimum of $100. I don't know how Nick Trenchard wins two IMCA Modified Main Events and finishes second in the other and somehow loses the title. Too much emphasis on time trials? I think the point system might need some tweaking, which might include passing points in the Main Event. I know that's more of a pain in the butt to calculate, but I also know Nick did quite a bit of passing.

However, I don't see how Heather would be displeased about what just happened at Cottage Grove this weekend. Good racing, a fireworks display on Sunday and everybody seemed to have fun. There was a good turnout in the grandstands as well. It is interesting that there was quite a bit of Medford area driver support across all three divisions, and yet we didn't see much Cottage Grove support in the Medford Late Model show. I wish I could say I was surprised about that, but I saw it coming a mile away. We couldn't get the Cottage Grove guys to come when Mike ran the track. If the new management can change that trend, that would be a good thing.

If I can circle back to the Vintage Valley Sportsman division at Merced Speedway, I was happy to see 11 cars show up. That's the biggest turnout the division has had in a very long time. There were two Bay Area Hardtop guys, and the Junkyard Dog of Doug Braudrick got the win with Joel Hannagan behind the wheel. I'm not surprised in the least by that, and he was by far the fastest car on the track.

Mark Odgers gave a good accounting of himself before the flat tire. They have another race on July 24th, and there's a couple other Sportsman cars I sure hope make it then. It wouldn't take much to get to 16 cars in this class, but the drivers have to have the desire to make it happen. It's possible we could see a few Sportsman cars when the California Hardtops reconvene at Marysville on July 17th, that is unless it gets canceled because the weather is too hot. You never know with the CHA.

The Stockton Dirt Track shook off the disappointing turnout of the Stock Car oriented show by delivering the goods for the Sprint Car Challenge Tour and Hunt Wingless Sprint Series race. Between the two groups, there were 50 cars. More importantly, Tom Sagmiller has done a good job of delivering a smooth racing surface. Stockton had been developing a bit of a reputation as being tough on race cars, and it's obvious Tony Noceti has been trying to smooth things over and give the racers something better to race on. Tom has taken on the challenge and definitely takes a lot of pride in the work he does in track preparation. I would have to say the show last weekend in terms of car count was a success, although I have no idea what the fan attendance was.

I still think it comes back to Tony investing in media. He needs somebody working Facebook, Twitter and whatever other social media. He needs somebody writing articles and putting the message out there. If people are concerned about track conditions, then the message that the track is committed to improving on that and having some success needs to be conveyed. I've said this before and I'll say it again. Stockton's not the only track that's lagging on this. It boggles my mind how little value track management at various venues puts in having a media person, and yet a good media person can make them money.

I'd like to hopefully end this column by circling back to the Bay Area. Ocean Speedway will be racing on July 9th. Much like Antioch Speedway, they took last weekend off for the holiday. Several Antioch area racers participated in the 4th of July parade put on by the city. You have to give an assist to jack of all trades Larry Adams, who is the one who negotiated the track's inclusion in the parade back in 2019. Somebody had burnt a bridge over 20 years ago, but that bridge has been repaired. Antioch Speedway has been using the time to work new clay on to the racing surface, so hopefully that produces a good show when the IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sport Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars and Hobby Stocks return this Saturday night.

Petaluma Speedway has a special occasion coming up this Saturday night, and the NARC/King of the West Winged 410 Sprint Cars will be there. Actually, the series will be having some special shows coming up, including the $5,000 to win Howard Kaeding Classic at Ocean Speedway on July 17th. That race will pay $800 just to take the green flag. Petaluma will be honoring Baylands Raceway this Saturday.  If you look at your history, you'll understand that Baylands Raceway Park was at the table in launching the King of the West Series back in 1985. It was the Golden State Challenge King of California Series back in those days. NARC supported those races, so if you had a 30 car field for one of their shows, the Golden State Challenge Series was even bigger.

Baylands Raceway was a part of many things. Though the facility may not have been state of the art or one of the nicest looking places, they had a killer 3/8 mile clay oval, a quarter-mile drag strip, 1/8 mile track for Karts, Micros and Motorcycles. They had it all. If you could bring two or three cars, they might even make a division for you. Though they had big Sprint Car events with wing and without, they also took care of the Stock Cars.

If you go back to when it was Fremont Speedway in the 1970s, it was about BCRA Midgets and a rip roaring Mini Stock program. We still feel the loss of Baylands Raceway to this day, and it's really cool that Petaluma is honoring the place. I'm thinking Dennis Mattish might even be there to sell some copies of his recently released book on the history of Fremont racing.

I've mentioned how Petaluma Promoter John Pershing Soares was in the right place at the right time when Vallejo Speedway closed, and he gained their remaining Super Stocks and Street Stocks in the 1980s. The show at Petaluma was second to none back then. When Baylands closed at the end of 1988, David Vodden brokered a deal for all of the divisions to be welcomed at Petaluma. The All Pro Series was born in 1989, and 125-150 cars in the pits over the next few years was the norm. You really had to be there to see it. Some might have thought it was too much, but you definitely got your money's worth.

It was always the intention of Vodden to relocate those divisions to a new track, but everything he tried to do didn't quite work out. David is running the show at Willows, which is a road course not far from Orland. There's been talk about a dirt track being added to that venue, although I am unaware of anything proceeding yet. David also writes motorsports columns and is still very much involved in the sport. He's a go-getter and somebody that I definitely respect. What's interesting is there is still a tie in between Petaluma and Baylands to this day, and that lineage actually goes back to the 1970s.

Sadly, the Modified Mini Stocks and American Stocks went away. The Sprint 100s and Outlaw Sprint Buggies thought they could do it without Petaluma and have since faded away. The Winged 360 Sprint Cars and Mini Stocks, however, continue to be a part of Petaluma since joining the roster in 1989. Obviously, Sprint Car racing became a regular thing at Baylands when it opened in 1982. The Mini Stock program in all of its various configurations goes back to the 1970s there. The racing historian will understand that it is the same heritage, although Petaluma just runs one type of Mini Stock, and not three or four as they did back in the days of Fremont Raceway or Baylands.

In any case, I'm thinking the Salute to Baylands this Saturday night at Petaluma Speedway should go over well, and I'm a fan of honoring heritage in the sport. According to the NARC/KWS Series, Vodden will actually be there along with some stars from Sprint Car racing at the old track. I'm not sure who they're talking about, but David's presence at Petaluma alone is pretty cool. I can honestly say that he did good things for that track when he had the authority to do so and gave a really good effort when it came to trying to find another location. It's just hard to put another track anywhere in the Bay Area with what you're up against.

My hope was to leave everything as it was written on Monday and not add anything. It came across my desk that thanks to some sponsorship, Siskiyou Golden Speedway will be offering more money dependent on car count for the IMCA Sport Modifieds this Saturday night. The show should be good as the SODCA Dwarf Cars, Outlaw Pro Stocks and Mini Stocks are also on the card. However, the Medford guys have a race at Southern Oregon Speedway in the Sport Modifieds, so I don't know who might come. What I do know is it's $500 to win if Yreka can at least get 10 cars, which hasn't happened for the past couple of races. It's $800 to win at 15 cars and 20 cars will net them $1,000 to win. I give them credit for trying, although I do wonder if raising the start money a little bit might get the attention of guys who maybe don't feel they have a chance to win.

Tuesday afternoon, Stockton Dirt Track management announced they are dropping the remainder of the Stock Car schedule for this year. The Sprint Car stuff will go on as scheduled, including the Gary Patterson Memorial race in November. I'm not surprised by this decision, although I can say I'm disappointed. They had some of the key ingredients needed to make this happen, but here's the reality. They didn't really have a Stock Car program at this track prior to what they were doing last year, so this thing was going to take time to build. It was also going to require strategic scheduling that made sure they didn't book over certain events happening elsewhere.

The Stockton Dirt Track has had a bit of a reputation as being rough on cars. It's had me wondering at times how safe the place was, but management has fought to make things better. I know Tom Sagmiller has been involved in track preparation this year, and all I've been hearing is that the surface has looked good. I've also heard that Tony Noceti is paying these guys the full purse no matter how many cars. In other words, if they said it was $1,500 to win and only nine cars showed up, the winner got $1,500 to win. This is key to showing the drivers that you will do what you say you will.

Because they will do what they say they will, I think management said they can't afford to pay that kind of purse and not get the car count. I think they are admitting with this list of cancellations that they know they will have a difficult task getting the car count that's needed to justify the show. I don't know if they will go back to the drawing board in 2022 and try something different with these cars, although I hope they do.

I will repeat my comments from above one more time in case anybody missed it. You have to have a good media presence. This includes written articles, videos and audios and social media. You have to put it in people's faces. The beautiful part is that in 2021 there are more options to accomplish the task. Make everybody want to be there. This was not happening. I understand management is busy as it is, because they are also promoting the pavement track. Plus, I believe Tony has other businesses to run. However, they should hire somebody to do that job if they want to do these things on the dirt track.

I hear different rumors regarding Tony and promoting dirt track racing, and I am reluctant to say what I've been hearing. It could damage anything that's being planned, and it may not be true. What I will say is the track should be looking at sanctioning possibilities for the dirt shows. I'm sure you'll hear a call in unison from the Modified and Sport Modified drivers that IMCA should be pursued. If they were to book dates for these two classes away from anything Antioch Speedway does, I don't know that they would get rejected. It's hard to say, because IMCA continues to reject Coos Bay Speedway, but I wouldn't think they'd reject them.

Speaking of Coos Bay, they do have sanctioning there. It's NASCAR sanctioning, and I'll bring this up in context with Stockton. I wonder what the possibility would be to bring NASCAR sanctioning to the dirt track in the future? Since they've shown an interest in booking Late Models and Pro Stocks, you've got Divisions 1 and 2, and the Hobby Stocks and Mini Stocks would make Divisions 3 and 4. Or, you could take Modifieds and put them in there someplace, but the bottom line is you would have a sanctioning body with some nice point fund money being offered. It's just a thought.

Ultimately, Tony has to go back to the drawing board and figure out what he wants to do. There are certain banner Sprint Car races that have been working and should continue to do so. With Tractor Pulls and Monster Truck events, they have other stuff. However, weather has been an interesting thing over the last few years. There are racing possibilities in January, February and March, and they could do that in Stockton on certain occasions and know they had the only game in town.

Sprinkle a few of those types of shows throughout the year, but not too many of them. Then, you could actually have a championship season that people can commit to, knowing that it might only be a half a dozen to eight races. In any case, I hate to see things get canceled this year, but they also can't keep losing money because they're not getting driver support.

I don't think there's anything else I need to add to this column. I have to get started on race review articles and try to see if I can get back on a decent schedule, so I'm going to end this column right where I'm at. Until next time...
