First Career Win For Bloomfield At Marysville,
Shelby, Slaney, Cooper Also Victorious

Marysville, CA...July 31...Dylan Bloomfield won the 25 lap Winged 360 Sprint Car Main Event Saturday night at Marysville Raceway. This was the first career win for the 15 year old in this division, and he becomes the 12th different winner in 13 races at the track this year. Bloomfield was the runnerup in the Wingless Spec Sprint championship race at Antioch Speedway last year. The win came aboard the Dave Johnson Racing owned Red Line Oil sponsored Sprinter.

Bloomfield started on the pole and proceeded to lead from the start ahead of Brian McGahan and point leader Billy Wallace. Drake Stanley fell out on Lap 13 with Darren Johnson retiring a lap later. The only yellow flag of the race waved on Lap 14 for a tangle between Ron LaPlant and Korey Lovell that eliminated Lovell. Bloomfield maintained command on the restart and would lead the rest of the way with McGahan second ahead of Wallace, Brent Bjork, Kevin Lovell, William Fielding, RJ Baker, Jayce Steinberg, LaPlant and Pat Harvey Jr. There were 14 drivers in action with Bjork setting the fast time a 13.377, beating the 13.469 of McGahan and the 13.472 of Fielding. The eight lap heat wins went to Bloomfield and Kevin Lovell.

Philip Shelby won the 20 lap Pepsi IMCA Sport Modified Main Event. This was the third win of the season for the past champion in what turned out to be an eventful race. With a pole position start, Dwarf Car star Buddy Olschowka set the early pace ahead of Cole Fear and Donnie Fortney. Damian Merritt moved past Fear for second on Lap 2. Mike Merritt slipped past Fear for third on Lap 7, and the first yellow flag didn't fall until Lap 10 when there was debris on the track. On the restart lap, Damian Merritt took the lead from Olschowka, but he tangled with Todd Cooper in Turn 4 for a yellow flag a lap later. Olschowka was back in the lead at that point ahead of Mike Merritt and Phillip Shelby. A lap 12 yellow flag waved for Fear and Willie Horn Jr in Turn 3, and Fear joined Fortney and Damian Merritt on the sidelines at that point. Shelby took second from Mike Merritt on the restart, and the final yellow flag waved on Lap 15 for Scott Savell in Turn 4. Olschowka led the restart, but Shelby made his winning move a lap later. Point leader Jimmy Ford settled into third at that point, and Shelby went on to victory ahead of Olschowka, Ford, Todd Cooper, Mike Merritt, Savell, Horn, Fear, Fortney and Damian Merritt. Eight lap heat race wins went to Olschowka and Ford.

Anthony Slaney won the 20 lap Limited Late Model Main Event. This was just his second start in the class. Slaney is the reigning Petaluma Speedway IMCA Modified champion. He started on the pole and bolted into the lead ahead of Dan Brown Jr and Ray Trimble. Trimble took second from Brown on Lap 3. The race ran for 11 laps before a yellow flag flew for Richard Shafer in Turn 3. Brown ended up retiring from second as Slaney led Trimble and incoming point leader Jay Norton on the restart. A lap 16 yellow flag flew for Eddie Gardner in Turn 1. On the restart, Slaney continued to lead as Norton took second from Trimble. Slaney went on to victory, and Norton crossed the line in second, only to be disqualified in post race tech. Trimble was elevated to second ahead of Kiely Ricardo, Gardner, Brown, Shafer and past track champion George Magenheimer. The six lap heat race wins went to Slaney and Trimble. With the disqualification of Norton, Brown gained the point lead. Rod Oliver was in a position to get the point lead, but he was absent from the race.

Brian Cooper won the 20 lap Hobby Stock Main Event. The IMCA Sport Modified star got behind the wheel of his father Dave Cooper's car for the occasion and became the sixth different winner in eight races. Cooper started on the pole and motored into the early lead ahead of past Marysville Stock Car champion Jerry Bartlett and Kyle Cheney. Unlike recent weeks where the race has been a bit rough, it was pretty much smooth sailing this time. Chaney slipped past Bartlett for second on Lap 9, and point leader Jacob Johnson took fourth from Devin Koranda at that point. However, Brian Cooper held a commanding straightaway advantage over Cheney when the checkered flag flew. Unfortunately, Cheney was disqualified from what would have been a season best second, moving Bartlett into that position ahead of Johnson, Toby Merrifield, Koranda, Robert Warf, Zach Lindgren, Joe Gillock, Trevor Deadmond and Mario Davis. Bartlett and Brian Cooper won the eight lap heat races.

The Winged 360 Sprint Cars return this Saturday night along with the Pepsi IMCA Sport Modifieds and Hobby Stocks. For further information, go to www.marysvilleraceway.com.

Williamson Wins Mark Howard Memorial
At Cottage Grove Speedway

Cottage Grove, Oregon...July 31...Jesse Williamson wrapped up an impressive weekend with the victory in the 52 lap IMCA Modified Main Event Saturday night at Cottage Grove Speedway. The occasion was the annual Mark Howard Memorial race, and the win was worth $2,600 to Williamson, who also won the preliminary feature on Friday night.

Williamson outran Curtis Towns to win the Scramble and earn the pole for the feature race. Williamson sprinted into the lead at the start ahead of John Campos and Grey Ferrando.  Nick Trenchard started back in the fifth row and had maneuvered his way forward and into the fourth position by the eighth lap. That was the order until Campos had problems on Lap 40. As Williamson continued to lead the way, Collen Winebarger and Trenchard settled in the second and third. The battle was for fourth in the later stages of the race. B Main winner and point leader Jake Mayden took over fourth on Lap 41, but Ferrando came back to grab the spot with five laps to go. Williamson built about a half-straightaway advantage over Winebarger by the checkered flag with Trenchard a solid third, followed by Ferrando, Mayden, Campos, Bricen James, Eaton Whistler, Curtis Towns and Derick Young.

The Top 10 finishers from Friday night ran a 10 lap Scramble to set the first five rows of the Main Event. In that race, Towns had the pole and led two laps before second row starter Williamson went motoring by to take the lead. Williamson went on to win ahead of Towns and Campos. The rest of the drivers ran one of the eight lap heat races with the wins going to Matthew Drager, Jeffrey Hudson and James Welshonse. Mayden won the 12 lap B Main to earn his way into the feature. He started on the pole and led every lap in victory. Ryan Baker moved into second on Lap 2 and ended up finishing a close second ahead of Eric Ashley. Paul Rea and Craig Cassell had a spirited duel in the last few laps to finish fourth as Cassell made the last lap pass to grab the position.

Kyle Alberding won the 25 lap Todd's Auto Body Limited Sprint Main Event. This was the second win for Aberding, who currently ranks third in the standings. Tyler Thompson had the pole and moved into the early lead ahead of Alberding and Pat Desbiens. Desbiens surrendered third to Camden Robustelli on Lap 8. Robustelli took second from Alberding on Lap 12, just as Thompson's race came to an end. Alberding maneuvered into the lead on the restart ahead of Robustelli and point leader Shane Forte. Forte moved into second on Lap 17 with Robustelli retiring moments later. This moved Justin McConvilllle into third. Alnerding won with Forte a close second ahead of McConvilllle, Justin Lemon, Robustelli, Thompson, Desbiens, Mike Griffith and Tim Minter.

Thompson set the fast time of 13.422, beating the 14.170 of Desbiens. The eight lap heat race wins went to McConnville and Robustelli. The track has been trying to start up a Senior Sprint class for drivers over 45 years old, and Desbiens won that 15 lap race ahead of Nate Ellertson and Kevin Journey.

Anthony Pope took a break from running with the Dwarf Cars to win the 25 lap Royalty Core IMCA Sport Modified Main Event. Shawn Hand had the pole and moved into the early lead ahead of Aaron Bloom and Jordan Henry. However, Skylar Winebarger charged into third on Lap 2 and slipped past Bloom for second a lap later. Hand had problems on Lap 5 with Winebarger briefly gaining the lead on Lap 6, only to surrender the spot to Pope on a Lap 7 restart. Henry quickly settled into second, and Matt Sanders moved by Aaron Bloom for third on Lap 10. The battle continued between Bloom and Sanders with Bloom grabbing third on Lap 16, only to surrender it back to Sanders on Lap 18. A lap later, Bloom regained the spot for good, and Sanders lost fourth to point leader Dustin Comer on Lap 22. Pope held off Henry for the win with Aaron Bloom a close third, followed by Dustin Comer, Sanders, Dalton Bloom, Trevor Points, Winebarger, Hand and Chuck Carson.

Henry was the quickest of 17 qualifiers with a lap of 16.080, beating the 16.254 of Ray Bloom and the 16.265 of Points. The eight lap heat race wins went to Hand and Ray Comer, and Dustin Comer won the four lap Trophy Dash.

Brian Smith won the 25 lap PRA Hardtop Main Event. He started back in the fourth row and drew heavily on his dirt track experience to come to the front of the pack. Troy Gasner led early from the pole ahead of Friday night winners Zach Toll. Steve Smith was an early third, and Toll took the lead from Gasner on the third lap. Brian Smith took second from Gasner on Lap 5 and put the moves on Toll to grab the lead on the 10th lap. Reigning PRA Hardtop champion Kyran Greene found his way into third by Lap 9 and took second from Toll on the 15th circuit. Toll briefly regained second on Lap 21 before Greene grabbed the spot for good with Jimmy Smith following into third. However, Brian Smith held a straightaway advantage over Greene that he would take to the checkered flag. Jimmy Smith ended up third, followed by Toll, Chuck Jacobs, Gasner, Brian Lenihan and Steve Smith. Brian Smith set the fast time of 17.725, beating the 17483 of Toll. Brian Smith won the eight lap heat race with Jimmy Smith claiming four lap Trophy Dash honors.

Racing continues this weekend with another special event. It's the annual Marvin Smith Memorial for the Winged 360 Sprint Cars. Steve Borror Wins Rocky Nash Memorial
At Southern Oregon Speedway

White City, Oregon...July 31...Steve Borror won the 30 lap Tri State Pro Stock Challenge Series Main Event Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway. This was the first ever Rocky Nash Memorial race, and Borror collected $1,000 for his effort. The 2016 Outlaw Pro Stock champion was coming off of a big victory in the Outlaw Pro Stock/Sportsman Late Model Shootout race at Coos Bay Speedway a week earlier.

18 drivers representing Oregon, California and Nevada made the trip for this occasion, but attrition took a toll with Michael Burch, Lloyd Speer and Jesse Gonzalez scratching before the Main Event. Nash's nephew, Dan Randall, led the memorial lap just before the Main Event, but then he suffered mechanical problems and was unable to take the green flag.

The green flag waved, but a yellow flag soon followed for Chance Trout on the back straightaway. From his outside front row starting spot, Tri State Series point leader Richard Brace Jr motored into the lead in the Bill Hall III car, followed by Scott Lenz, who was piloting the Lyle Hopper owned entry. Blaine Hill was an early third, but he was passed by reigning Outlaw Pro Stock champion Scott Flowers on Lap 3. Borror started in the fourth row and had worked his way into fourth by Lap 4. Borror took third from Flowers on Lap 9, and the lead trio ran in close formation. Borror slipped past Lenz for second on Lap 16 and put the moves on Brace to grab the lead a lap later. Borror hit the afterburners and pulled away from Brace during the second half of the race, taking the checkered flag a straightaway ahead of Brace. Lenz was a solid third, followed by Scott Flowers, James Flowers, Colby Hammond, Cory Biggs, Ken Irving, Matt Harlow and Taylor Buckley.

Gonzalez set the fast time in qualifying with a lap of 16.236, beating the 16.418 of Borror and the 16.613 of Biggs. Gonzalez, Borror and Scott Flowers picked up the eight lap heat race wins. They ran an eight lap Crack The Whip Challenge race that sees the last place car on each lap receive a black flag until only one car remains. It was Colby Hammond scoring the win in that race.

David Steele scored the victory in the 25 lap Mini Stock Main Event. Steele is the two-time reigning champion of the division and also the division's all-time Main Event win leader.

Yreka racer Logan McKnight jumped into the early lead ahead of Kristopher Mix and Andrew Hall. Hunter Magnan slipped past Hall for third on Lap 2, and a Lap 4 yellow flag waved for a Turn 4 tangle involving Mix and Connor Franklin. On the restart, Ashtin Hedges and Steele raced past McKnight for first and second. A close battle ensued between the lead duo, and Steve Goetz took third from McKnight on Lap 8. A yellow flag flew on Lap 11 for Hall, and McKnight spun on the first restart attempt. Hedges continued to lead Steele and Goetz when the race resumed. Steele began pressuring Hedges hard before taking the lead on Lap 13. Mix had worked his way back up to fourth, but he spun for a Lap 14 yellow flag as his race came to an end. Steele continued to lead Hedges on the restart as Quintyn Ericks moved into third. Steele begin to pull away from Hedges and had a straightaway advantage over him by the end. Ericks settled for third, followed by Franklin, McKnight, Goetz, Dylan Irving, Hall, Marilyn Yawnick and Mix.

The 16 car field for the division on this occasion was their highest car count since 2016. Hedges set the fast time of 17.992, barely beating the 17.996 of Goetz with Steele third quick at 18.117. Hedges won both his eight lap heat race and the four lap Trophy Dash with the other heat wins going to Goetz and Steele.

Dustin Knight won the 15 lap Rapp Racing Late Model Lites Main Event. The past IMCA Modified and Pro Stock champion becomes the third different winner in as many races. Knight started last in the four car field and quickly worked his way past four lap Trophy Dash winner Chris Salyer. Once in front, Knight went on to win ahead of Salyer, point leader Charlie Eaton and David Marble. Ricky Lynn Knight was a Main Event scratch and Dustin Knight won the six lap heat race. Dustin Knight also set the fast time of 15.429, beating the 15.915 of Salyer

The CD Architects Late Model Main Event ended up being canceled. Point leader Joey Tanner had set the fast time with the group at 14.829. Second quick Brian Bowman (15.673) scratched prior to the eight lap heat race, which was won by Tanner. Tanner also won the four lap Trophy Dash ahead of Bob Dees. The track paid the drivers the normal purse despite not running the Main Event.

The track hosts the two-day Nitro Monster Truck event this Friday and Saturday night before returning with the ISCS Sprint Cars on August 14th. Also competing that night will be the Sweet Tea Express IMCA Modifieds, Outlaw Pro Stocks, Rapp Racing Late Model Lites and Mini Stocks. Miller Scores Thrilling Win At Shasta Speedway,
White, Krupa, Cyphers, Martin Other Winners

Eureka, CA..July 31...David Miller won the 50 lap Late Model Main Event Saturday night at Redwood Acres Raceway. This was fan appreciation night, which included a meet and greet for the racers and the fans before the show. Miller is the point leader, and he got the win with a last lap pass on Luke Hall, who spun moments later. This was the third win of the season for Miller.

Luke Hall jumped into the lead at the start ahead of Dane Nissen and Miller. Miller made a backstretch pass on Nissan on Lap 2 to grab second. The close battle at the front continued for most of the race, but Miller appeared to slow just a little bit lapping a slower car as Hall pulled away on Lap 40. Hall had nearly a straightaway advantage when a yellow flag waved on Lap 46 for Scott Baker. Hall led Miller and Walters on the restart. Miller got a run on Hall as they took the white flag and put it up on the outside to Turns 1 and 2. He exited Turn 2 with the lead, and Hall spun moments later. Miller brought it home a happy winner ahead of Walters, Nissen, Hall, Nick Ford, Baker and Eddie Klein.  Hall set the fast time of 15.893, beating the 15.932 of Miller. The 10 lap heat race win went to Miller.

Brandon White won the 25 lap Legend Car Main Event. This was his fourth win in five starts. His absence from one race is what is preventing him from leading the standings at this point. There was a surprisingly big turnout of competitors for this race.

Scott Taylor led early ahead of Andy Thorton and Tyler Krupa. Thorton took the lead from Taylor on Lap 2, but Taylor came back strong to regain the lead a lap later with Carlee Austin following into second. However, Lap 6 saw Jordan Paiment and Cameron Austin move into first and second. A Lap 10 crash brought out a red flag as Paiment broke heading into Turn 3, hit the wall and flipped. Fortunately, he was not injured. Cody Winchell and Justin Johnson were also eliminated at that point. Chris Lawrence moved into the lead on the restart ahead of White, but White slipped past Lawrence for the lead on Lap 12. Cameron Austin settled into third and took second from Lawrence on lap 18. The tenacious Lawrence was able to regain second on Lap 23. However, White prevailed ahead of Lawrence, Cameron Austin, Brett Murrell, Dane Nissen, Tyler Krupa, Carlee Austin, Tyler Avelar, David Dunlap and Thorton.

Despite a big show happening elsewhere, there were 23 Legend Cars for this occasion. White set the fast time of 17.859, besting the 17.912 of Winchell. The 10 lap heat race wins went to Rick Estes, Taylor and Winchell. Only 16 drivers would get to start the Main Event, so they ran a 25 lap B Main to determine the final four starting positions. There were numerous yellows in this race, but David Dunlap was able to lead all the way in victory. Dylan Hagman was an early second ahead of Justin Johnson, but Johnson took second on a Lap 11 restart. Estes was able to get past Hagman for third on Lap 22, and Dunlap won by nearly a straightaway ahead of Johnson, Estes, Hagman and Nico Caldeira.

Jordan Krupa won the 25 lap Bombers Main Event. He becomes the fifth different winner in six races and remains in the championship chase along with his brother and point leader Tyler Krupa and sister Raquel Krupa, who currently ranks second.

Steve Kimberling jumped into the early lead ahead of Jordan Krupa, but an inside pass on the backstretch on Lap 3 put Jordan Krupa into first. Ed Rasmussen made a Turn 4 pass to gain second, and Tyler Krupa took third from Kimberling on Lap 4. A Lap later, Tyler Krupa used a Turn 4 pass to take second from Rasmussen. Raquel Krupa settled into third on Lap 9. A lap 14 yellow flag waved for Brandon Katri. Jordan Krupa continued to lead the restart with Raquel Krupa making a backstretch pass to briefly grab second from Tyler Krupa. Unfortunately, Raquel Krupa fell back a few spots on Lap 19 with Tyler Krupa back in second ahead of Kimberling. Despite the pressure from his brother, Jordan Krupa scored the well-earned victory. Tyler Krupa settled for second ahead of Kimberling, Rasmussen, Chris Naughton, Raquel Krupa, Katri, Bridget Steeves and Doug Way.

Katri set the fast time of 18.537, beating the 18.607 of Tyler Krupa and the 18 647 of Raquel Krupa. Kimberling won the 15 lap heat race.

Gannon Cyphers won the 20 lap Mini Stock Main Event. This was just his second appearance of the season, and he won in his earlier start as well. Sam Brown jumped into the early lead ahead of Cole Peterson. Cyphers made a Turn 4 pass on Peterson for second on Lap 5 and put the moves on Brown in Turn 2 to two laps later to grab the lead. Point leader Eric O'Ferrall was able to take third from Peterson at that point, and he made a Turn 2 pass on Brown for second on Lap 10. Jarrett Mayo settled into third on Lap 13 and made an outside pass on the back stretch on Lap 19 to take second from O'Ferrall. However, Cyphers held a straightaway advantage over Mayo by the time the race ended. O'Ferrall was a solid third, followed by Brian Murrell Jr, Brown, Peterson, Colton Kinsey, Joe Boromini, James Nichols and Allison McCarty.

Cyphers was the fastest of 11 qualifiers with a lap of 18.868, beating the 18.909 of Mayo. The eight lap heat race wins went to Brown and Cyphers.

Point leader Jeremiah Martin won the 25 lap Roadrunner Main Event. This was the fourth win in six races for the current point leader. Riley Honzik jumped into the early lead ahead of Dylan Ford and Bob Ratzlaff. The lead three cars ran closely with Bob Ratzlaff moving into second on Lap 7. A lap later, Ratzlaff slipped past Honzik for the lead. Jeremiah Martin quickly moved into second. Honzik saw his good run end with mechanical issues on Lap 16 as Martin was pressuring Ratzlaff for the lead. Ratzlaff ended up spinning in Turn 4 on Lap 18 with Martin grabbing the lead at that point ahead of Dylan Ford. As Martin went on to the satisfying win, Tanisha Ratzlaff made a last lap maneuver to claim second. Dylan Ford settled for third, followed by Bob Ratzlaff, Shawn Wildman, Brian Hopkins, Nick Ford, Ryan David, Ty Rose and Wayne Marsh.

Bob Ratzlaff set the fast time of out of 11 competitors with a lap of 20.390 , beating the 20.528 of Tanisha Ratzlaff. The 10 lap heat wins went to Ryan David and Bob Ratzlaff.

The Editor's Viewpoint

There came a time on Monday when mentally I hit a roadblock and I stopped writing. On Tuesday, I gave myself permission to take as long as I needed to do this deal. I've decided that I'm not going to stress myself out and push myself too hard when I'm essentially doing what I'm doing right now for free. Nobody is helping me, and I'm not out there demanding it. It would be nice if a track would throw something my way or I got a tip, but I didn't start doing what I was doing this year with any expectations.

As I was sitting here on Wednesday, trying to figure out how hard I wanted to push myself, I received news that the racing community lost another one of its own. Brian Gray has passed away. People at Antioch Speedway or Baylands Raceway might know who he is. I know that long time Antioch Promoter John Soares considered Brian family and like a son to him. Brian is an unsung hero in Bay Area auto racing that people may not realize. Because of people like him, we have Winged 360 Sprint Cars and Wingless Spec Sprints.

When any division gets started, it's the drivers who initially get on board who generate the interest that gets other people out there. Baylands Raceway was at the center of the Winged 360 Sprint Car movement when it began in 1985. A lost bit of trivia is that the late Jim Booth, long time NCMA President, was the 1985 champion. In 1986, that division was actually running their own races. Interestingly enough, both Brian Gray and Keith Shipherd were on the initial roster, and I believe both of them were Main Event winners that year. They were working towards double digit car counts and it was racers like these two who generated the interest that helped get the Winged 360 Sprint Cars from where they were then to where they are now.

Of course, many of the drivers on the 1986 roster at Baylands were priced out of the class as they didn't expect that it was going to become so much more expensive. When the Wingless Spec Sprint division got started in 1999, we needed 12 commitments to get the approval of Promoter John Soares. Like Shipherd, Gray was one of them. Because of people like Brian, this division had the fighting chance that helped get them from where they were then to where they are now.

A lot I can say about Brian. He was one of the nicest people you would want to know, and I certainly had some good interactions with him when I returned to the sport in 2015. He was somebody that Soares could rely on at Antioch, and his electrician skills helped keep Antioch Speedway and Merced Speedway operational. He had fun running a Dwarf Car for a few years there. He won some races, but it was never really about that for him. I called him "The Easy Rider" when I announced him at the beginning of the Spec Sprint movement, because he was just so laid back and had a fun approach to things.

It hurts anytime we lose somebody in our community. As I get older, I feel these losses even more. Even if you don't see these people for years, you still remember the times when you did see them. You can run into them again and it will be like you were never apart. I had been away from Antioch Speedway for over a decade, and that's the way Brian treated me. It was almost a ritual for me that I would go sit on his trailer before the races and have a few words with him. My condolences go out to his family.

I guess I'm aiming to put this post up before a green flag waves on the races on Friday night, but I clicked on Up On The Bar discussion for a moment. I heard Willamette Speedway Late Model champion Joey Tanner talking about what he sees as the problem with his division in Oregon. As bad as he may think it is for the class in Oregon, I can assure you that California wishes they had even the Late Model division Oregon has. The numbers are down, and people are starting to ask why. I'm dumbfounded that some people don't get it, but maybe I can help them.

I'm not going to let race tracks completely off the hook for contributing to the problem, but let's be honest. 2020 was the crappy year of the covid-19 shut down. As tracks were opening and paying in some cases ridiculous purses with no fans in the grandstands, I was issuing a warning. I said that even as the grandstands would be open in 2021, we were going to start feeling the economic pinch of what we'd been through. This would be felt on the pit side and the grandstand side, and I think I've seen evidence of that. In short, one of the issues that might be contributing to the downturn in Late Model car count in Oregon is the economical situation. We should all be hoping we don't have another shutdown around the corner.

I can see Tanner being concerned. He made the decision to go from the Willamette area to compete for the championship at Southern Oregon Speedway this year. He skipped a race at Willamette last Saturday in order to keep his point effort going in Medford, only to find that there were three Late Models in attendance. While I'm very proud that we were able to build the Late Model and Sprint Car divisions under Mike McCann in the 4 years that he promoted the track, I've been concerned that these divisions were still works in progress. Both divisions still needed TLC and a strong message that the track stands behind them.

When all the stuff was going on behind the scenes and all the drama was taking place in Medford, my concern was that the momentum had been killed. It wasn't merely because of the shutdown. Some of the drivers in the class had sold their cars. Therefore, my concern was that double digits might be a challenge, and that has turned out to be the case.

I think the question will come down to this. Is management committed enough to this division to fight for it for a couple of years, and will the racers who can support it meet them halfway? In my mind, there's no reason there can't be six or eight cars at the next race. If the drivers can't fight at least that hard, maybe this movement to build the class up has come to an end. I hate to say that, but I also have a hunch that IMCA Stock Cars will be in the Medford track's future.

Saturday's show was more about the Rocky Nash Memorial Tri State Pro Stock Challenge Series. This was a race that I had been lobbying for, and Roy Bain took up the mantle and got with the Nash family. They made it happen. They delivered 18 race cars, though the numbers were a little lower than I thought they should have been. That's the downside, which I will get into in a moment. The upside was these guys really did put on one hell of a race that went 30 straight laps all green, so the division lived up to its billing as the headliner. Steve Borror proved to be money once again with his $1,000 win.

Last year, Roy was able to negotiate through the pandemic situation and booked 12 races. Most of those races did pretty darn well, but he had one thing on his side. Some key tracks that had Pro Stock divisions were not really able to open, so those drivers were traveling to the series. On Saturday night, Santa Maria Raceway had nine Western Pro Stocks for $650 to win. Santa Maria and Bakersfield both want this class, so I expect the managements at both places to fight harder. There were at least three drivers down in Santa Maria that could have been in Medford, but they went to Santa Maria.

This is the challenge that Roy faces in fighting for Pro Stock racing. In California, we've watched the Late Model division fall by the wayside. There seems to be a movement to fire up Crate Late Models, but otherwise it's the Pro Stocks who are rallying. Roy has the daunting task of trying to meet the demand of race tracks wanting dates, drivers suggesting certain race tracks and not overbooking.

The schedule is basically a work in progress that can be adjusted during the season as needed. Hence, there's an added race coming up on Labor Day weekend at Bakersfield Speedway as the series goes there for the first time. I view this as a necessary move to keep drivers happy in that area, who have been supportive of the Tri State Series. Next up will be Petaluma Speedway on August 14th.

I could easily go into the Pro Stock discussion even more, but I'll just go with the point I've made and keep the column moving. I wanted to give a salute to the Mini Stock division for the 16 cars they delivered to Medford. This is the biggest car count for the division since 2016. Management somehow managed not to book the class until July this year, but I think the drivers are reminding them that they still have the cars and should be scheduled more often. I know management was trying to fight for the Hornet class, which is not something I disagree with. However, that division imploded on us in 2019 and will take time to rebuild. The Mini Stocks have more drivers to work with, as indicated on Saturday night. Not everybody who could have been there was there either.

I find it interesting that Coos Bay Speedway has the Tidal Wave 50 for the Late Models this Saturday night. It's the 5th annual race, but I've watched this race go from $3,000 to win to $1,000 to win. The way Drake Nelsen is going, this may be a regular $500 to win race before you know it. At $2,000 to win, I could see more drivers taking a look, but I'm going to be very curious to see who comes for the money being offered. Right now, they know the four people who have been supporting the last few races will be there. Beyond that is anybody's guess. I think Late Mode racing will continue in Oregon as I don't see Cottage Grove Speedway, Willamette or Coos Bay giving up on the class anytime soon.

Jerry Schram severely altered the Wild West IMCA Modified Speedweek Series, and it kicks off with three races this weekend at Willamette Speedway. The decision was made prior to 2020, but that season was lost due to the virus shutdown. Siskiyou Golden Speedway, Southern Oregon Speedway and Coos Bay Speedway were all unceremoniously evicted from the series. Jerry decided three races at Willamette, two at Cottage Grove, two at Sunset Speedway and a closer at Grays Harbor in Elma, Washington was the way to go. Was it the right call? I don't think so, but the numbers will bear out the reality. Adding the IMCA Sport Modifieds in support of all races needed to happen, and it finally has. I believe this one will be broadcast on IMCA TV.

Petaluma Speedway hosted a USAC West Coast 360 Sprint Car/USAC Western States Midgets double bill. Once again, the numbers were less than desired. They were unable to get double digits in the Midgets. I'd be a little bit concerned about Merced this weekend for the class, but I do think the Midgets will turn up for $2,000 to win in memory of Kevin Triplett. The West Coast 360 Sprint Cars had 15 cars, but the series is in need of an overhaul. You don't have enough drivers who are willing to support the full tour. If enough drivers from the area don't come out and support, the Wingless 360s fall flat on their face.

Obviously, Doug Lockwood has a love for this type of racing and an idea for how to right the ship here. This is really his first year of promoting it, and it's all about diagnosing the situation and making adjustments for next year and beyond. I do wonder if something more Northern California oriented would be more effective as drivers south of Merced don't tend to want to go up north. Either that or a USAC South and a USAC West with only the occasional shootout race. I don't know, but I do support injected Wingless 360 Sprints. I'd rather have this thing thrive than have the Hunt Wingless Series turned into an injected series.

One cool thing that came out of Petaluma Speedway on Saturday night was a double win for Shawn Arriaga. The third-generation racer piloted the Cameron Beard WMR Midget to victory and then scored another win in his Wingless Spec Sprint. Yeah, a Wingless Spec Sprint beating a field that had some injected 360 Sprints in it.

The Western Midgets were able to bring 10 cars to Petaluma a night after bringing the same to Watsonville. It's been a good year for that movement, and I expect that the numbers could be in the teens on average in 2022. I'm sure the USAC Western States and BCRA Midget groups are taking notes on what's happening here. Well, maybe USAC is. I have no idea what BCRA is doing.

Santa Maria Raceway management has been criticized lately for everything from the way the track is being promoted to track conditions. On the heels of the successful open wheel show they just had, they put up money for the five division show they just had. None of the divisions were running for less than $500 to win. It led to increases in car counts. The Pro Stocks were the lowest, but the nine cars they had was still an improvement. There were 24 cars each in the Dwarf Cars and the Sport Modifieds, and I think management had to feel pretty darn good about what just happened there.

I could say the same thing for what Merced Speedway just had with 32 Elk Grove Ford Sprint Car Challenge Tour Presented by Abreu Vineyards competitors. When I think about how many years I heard people in Merced say they wanted injected Sprint Cars, you've got a promoter now who is dedicated to giving them as much of that as possible. He's even intent on bringing the World of Outlaws back, which is something former Promoter John Soares did on multiple occasions. In any case, Merced's show, which also included IMCA Sport Modifieds and California Sharp Mini Late Models, was a success. It's on to the Kevin Triplett Memorial this week.

Since I mentioned the Crate Limited Late Model thing that seems to have something happening behind the scenes, I can point out that eight drivers went to Marysville this past weekend. Mike Slaney is the chief instigator in trying to possibly create a series for this class at a few tracks in 2022, and son Anthony Slaney got the win that night. I'm sure there were some conversations about what can be for this class in the future. The Winged 360 Sprint Car show there continues to be interesting as they had their 12th different winner in 13 races. They had a full field of Hobby Stocks, though they didn't need a B Main this time, and the IMCA Sport Modifieds also delivered double digits for a race that was added after the initial schedule was released.

Orland Raceway originally picked that night to run Sport Modifieds in anticipation of getting Marysville support, but the Marysville drivers had to go where they are getting their points. I thought they'd have nothing in Orland, but the fans at least got a small taste with four cars. I don't have time to do a mini report in this post, so that will have to wait. I do want to point out that four Sport Modifieds went to Orland with second-generation racer Tod Alonzo getting the win. There were also 13 Hobby Stocks in a race won by point leader Keith Ross, while Mini Truck point leader Dan Webster bested a six car truck field and Tom Davis beat a three car field of Mini Stocks. The numbers have been down there this year, but at least the show goes on.

I don't want to drone on and on here as I need to start editing, but I would like to acknowledge the pavement racing that happened at Ukiah Speedway, Redwood Acres Raceway and Madera Speedway. Kenny Shepherd gave the fans in Madera a nice MavTV Series event that had about 20 Pro Late Models for $5,000 to win. The Junior Late Models were a little light, but the kids running up front did a heck of a job. Throw in some Bandoleros and the Legends of the Pacific, which delivered 18 cars, and you had a nice show that was available for free viewing on YouTube. The polished version will be broadcast on MavTV at a later date.

I made the mistake of thinking that Redwood Acres Raceway in Eureka would not have a great turnout. They were also giving away the broadcast for free on YouTube. They have a nice Legend Car show that generally brings them a dozen cars. Imagine my surprise when there were about 24 of them. There was plenty of excitement just in that division alone, but there was more drama to be had with a last lap pass for the victory in Late Models and good racing in the Bombers, Mini Stocks and Roadrunners. I'm very happy to see them do so well, and it was also Fan Appreciation Night. There was a meet and greet with the fans and drivers.

For Ukiah Speedway, they kind of run a little bit of this and a little bit of that. Somehow, they managed to get somewhere in the 50 car range, and there was some excitement and drama in all of the classes on this occasion. I think it's been steady as she goes for Furia Motorsports in maintaining the programs at Ukiah and Lakeport. You're not having to choose between the two venues. If they do run on the same weekend, they're running on different nights. The next race will take place at Lakeport Speedway, and the action will take place between these two tracks all the way into October. I like the program they have there, and Ukiah is certainly a nice race track in my opinion.

We've reached August, and it's also when you start hearing a lot more about fires. That was actually starting in July, when we had our first two fire cancellations at Chico and Quincy. Susanville just canceled for this weekend. I understand racing fans in Chico are a bit nervous with the Louie Vermeil Memorial coming up on Labor Day weekend. This race has already been moved from Calistoga to Chico, so hopefully it will go off without a hitch. I have a hunch that it will, but I won't be surprised if something gets canceled before that race. There's a lot of dry areas right now, and that ought to make everybody nervous. Even if you're not in a place that's at high risk for fire, the smoke in the air can become problematic. Yet another challenge promoters have when trying to get cars and fans at their tracks.

Just as I was wrapping up this column, I saw that Friday night at Ocean Speedway is Hall of Fame night. I was delighted when I saw them adding this to their schedule this year, but then it sort of disappeared from the radar. I was wondering if it was even happening, and track prep guru Tom Sagmilller didn't know anything about it when I asked him a couple months ago. The ceremony is being done right around the time of the National Anthem, so somebody is getting inducted into the Hall of Fame. I don't have any details that I can mention at this time, so I'm anxious to see what happens. I will say I'm disappointed that the track sort of blundered this whole deal and didn't make more information available in the weeks leading up to it, but I guess I should be happy that at least something is finally happening there again.

Also moments ago, The Outlaw Pro Stock Association announced that they worked out the conflict on August 28th. They were initially booked at Siskiyou Golden Speedway and later booked at Southern Oregon Speedway. They have chosen the Medford track, which is good news for the track. The night wasn't looking so good if they somehow weren't able to keep the Pro Stocks on the schedule. I don't know what the Limited Sprint count would be that night and Hornets and Late Models don't look good. The Mini Stocks might deliver, but they definitely needed the Pro Stocks to give the fans a decent enough car count to see. Medford has hurt themselves a little bit in working with the Yreka track this year.

The August 28th race is when Yreka comes back from a month off due to the Siskiyou Golden Fair. It's the John Arnberg Memorial and they have the bigger money IMCA Modified race there along with IMCA Sport Modifieds and Southern Oregon Dwarf Cars. It definitely would have been a major bonanza for them if the Pro Stocks were there, but they can certainly afford to lose the Pro Stocks, especially if the IMCA Modified drivers do support the show as I think they might.

Plus, Yreka is making out like a bandit the following week with the Medford track not running the IMCA Sport Modifieds on the second night of the R Charles Snyder Salute in order for Yreka to have their big show that night. If the drivers don't come out for $7,007 to win and $707 minimum to start race for the Modifieds that weekend in Medford, it will be a disaster for them. If you look at what they have booked there now for September 4th, they need another division that can deliver a car count in support of the Modifieds that night.

A lot more I could say, but then I'd be taking that much longer to edit. I salute every promoter who makes it happen. Whether I'm critical of the effort here or there doesn't matter. If you are keeping the gates open, you get a thumbs up in my book. There won't be a book or a post if I don't get to editing, so I'm going to end this column and get it ready for posting. Until next time...
