Antioch, CA...October 9...Josh Young won the 20 lap Wingless Spec Sprint Main Event Saturday night at Antioch Speedway. The makeup 20 lap Main Event earlier in the evening was won by past Ocean Speedway champion Jimmy Christian. The occasion was the Donna Soares/Larry Damitz Memorial Hall of Fame night. By virtue of his division leading eighth Top 5 finish of the year, Ryon Siverling secured the division championship.

Josh Young won the regularly scheduled 20 lap feature race. Brent Steck took the early lead with Jimmy Christian and Tony Bernard moving into second and third on a Lap 2 restart. Christian took the lead on Lap 3 with Young following him into second. A lap later, Young slipped past Christian for the lead with Shawn Arriaga up to third. Yellow flags waved on Laps 11 and 12. Dylan Newberry was out at that point, and Young led Christian and Arriaga on the Lap 13 restart. Arriaga got by Christian for second on Lap 17. The battle was close up front in the closing laps. As Young took the checkered flag in victory, Christian made a last lap pass on Arriaga to finish second. Arriaga settled for third ahead of Ryon Siverling, Bernard, Steck, James East, Kevin Box, Richard Panfili and Rick Brophy.

The makeup 20 lap Main Event was held before the Hobby Stock B Main to give the drivers a chance to make repairs for the regular feature, and Jimmy Christian got the win. Brent Steck set the early pace ahead of Christian and Shawn Arriaga. A red flag waved on Lap 4 with Mackenzie Newton out at that point. Christian continued to lead Steck and Arriaga on the restart. A Lap 13 yellow flag was the final slowdown of the race with Roy Fisher retiring at that point. Christian led the rest of the way and beat Steck by about a straightaway for the win. Arriaga settled for third, followed by Bob Newberry, Kevin Box, Marcus Smith, James East, Tony Bernard, Ryon Siverling and Richard Panfili.

There were 21 Wingless Spec Sprints for the show, and 2019 champion Shannon Newton set the fast time of 13.528, beating the 13.842 of Christian and the 13.933 of Smith. The eight lap heat race wins went to Arriaga, Christian and Young.

Front row starter Charlie Bryant took the early lead ahead of Chris Long and Grayson Baca. A yellow flag waved on Lap 7 for Bryant, Long and Baca. Misty Welborn led the restart ahead of Coelho and three-time champion Chris Sorensen. Coello put the moves on Welborn to grab the lead on Lap 10 with a lap 11 yellow flag slowing the action. Another yellow flag waved a lap later with Long, Jewel Crandall and Michael Mates all eliminated. Coelho led the restart ahead of Jeff Bentancourt and Bryant. Bryant and McKinzie found themselves in second and third on lap 18 as Jeff Bentancourt had problems. Coelho went on to victory ahead of Bryant, McKinzie, Jake Bentancourt, Kenneth Robles, Nicholas Zapatero, Aiden Ponciano, Sorensen, Michaela Taylor and Welborn.

There were 26 Hobby Stocks on hand for the show, and the eight lap heat race wins went to Ponciano, Coelho, Sorensen and Welborn. Jeff Bentancourt started on the pole of the 12 lap B Main and proceeded to lead all the way for the win. Gavin Griffiths was an early second before being passed by Anthony Vigna on Lap 3. Bentancourt had a straightaway advantage in victory with Griffiths gaining second on the last lap as Vigna had problems. Angela Brown finished third ahead of Zapatero.

Joel Hannagan won the 15 lap Bay Area Hardtops/Valley Sportsman Main Event. This was the 19th Annual Chet Thomson Memorial race and the sixth time this race has been held at Antioch. Hannagan was once again driving the Junkyard Dog Sedan for car owner Doug Braudrick, and this was the duo's second win in this special race.

Dwayne Short settled into the early lead in his Sportsman, followed by Brad Coelho in the Tommy Thomson Hardtop and Matt Taylor. By the fourth lap, fifth row starter Hannagan had moved into fourth, and he made a low pass in Turn 1 a lap later to take third from Taylor. An inside move in Turn 4 of the seventh lap gained Hannagan second from Coelho, and he got past Short on the inside in Turn 1 to take the lead on Lap 8. As Hannagan pulled away, Short was having a close race with Coelho, while Taylor and Jimmy Perry III battled for fourth. Perry took fourth from Taylor on Lap 12 as Hannagan stretched his advantage. Hannagan won by half a lap ahead of Short. Coelho settled for third, followed by Perry, Rick Elliott, Taylor, Gary Hilderbrand, Ken Retzloff, Mike Friesen and Jerry Cecil. Sanders Overall Point Winner

Hanford, CA...October 9...Dominic Scelzi and Mitchel Moles picked up the 20 lap NARC/King of the West Fujitsu Winged 410 Sprint Car Series Main Event wins Saturday night at Keller Auto Speedway. This was the Morrie Williams Memorial, which pays tribute to the long time car owner. The wins in each race were worth $3200. They also did an overall point series for the night with Justin Sanders getting the $2,000 win in that as the only driver with two Top 5 finishes.

Only the first 20 lap race counted for NARC/KWS points. Scelzi won the six lap Trophy Dash ahead of Rico Abreu and Moles to grab the pole for the race. Moles spun in Turn 2 to force a complete restart. Scelzi led Sanders and Abreu when the green flag waved once again. By the seventh lap, Scelzi was working slower traffic, but Scelzi had a scary moment when Stephen Kent spun right in front of him in Turn 4 for a yellow flag. Scelzi led Sanders and Abreu on the restart. Reigning series champion DJ Netto had moved into fourth, and Kurt Nelson spun in Turn 4 for a Lap 13 yellow flag. Once again, Scelzi led the restart with Netto and Abreu both getting past Sanders. Scelzi went on to win with Netto a $1,500 second ahead of Sanders, Abreu, Willie Croft, Kyle Hirst, Blake Carrick, Tim Kaeding, Sean Becker and Moles.

The format called for a complete invert of all of the lead lap finishers from the first race, and the second race would not count for series points. Jessie Attard set the early pace ahead of Shane Hopkins and Sean Watts. Ryan Bernal and Ryan Robinson both spun in Turn 2 for a Lap 2 yellow flag. Moles took the lead from Attard on the restart with Hopkins running third. Abreu spun in Turn 2 for a Lap 4 yellow flag, and the order remained Moles, Attard and Hopkins when the race resumed. Shane Golobic had worked his way into the Top 5 at that point, and he made an inside pass in Turn 4 on Lap 7 to take second. Austin McCarl followed into third. Moles was working heavy traffic by Lap 15, but he made all the right moves when he needed to and brought home his first NARC/KWS win ahead of Golobic. Tim Kaeding made a last lap move around McCarl to finish third. Sanders ended up fifth, followed by Hopkins, Blake Carrick, Hirst, Attard and Kalib Henry.

Hirst was the quickest of 27 qualifiers with a lap of 14.694, beating the 14.904 of Moles and the 15.043 of Sanders. The eight lap heat race wins went to Scelzi, Moles and Sanders. A look at the point standings at the end of the night found Scelzi leading Tim Kaeding, 1917-1845. Netto was third with 1844. To keep up to date with this series, go to www.narc410.com.

Brody Fuson won the 20 lap USAC/BCRA Midgets Main Event. This was his second win of the season in Rusty Carlile's Race Pa Motorsports W.E. Spike chassis as he remains in contention for the championship.

USAC Midgets point leader Blake Bower took the early lead ahead of past BCRA Midgets champion Matt Streeter and Fuson. A yellow flag waved after just one lap. Bower led Streeter and Fuson on the restart, but a low pass in Turn 2 on Lap 4 gained Fuson second as Chase Johnson followed him into third. Shannon McQueen spun in Turn 1 for a Lap 5 yellow flag. Fuson got a good run on the inside on the restart and took the lead from Bower. Chase Johnson took second from Bower on Lap 7 and took up pursuit of Fuson. An inside pass on the backstretch on Lap 15 gained Jake Andreotti third from Bower with Jade Avedisian moving into fourth on Lap 18. Fuson held off the advances of Chase Johnson for the impressive win. Andreotti settled for third, followed by Avedisian, Bower, Jarrett Soares, Kyle Beilman, Streeter, BCRA point leader Colby Johnson and McQueen.

Chase Johnson was the quickest in Woodland Auto Display qualifying with a lap of 16.594, beating the 16.789 of McQueen and the 16.939 of Colby Johnson. The Extreme Mufflers first eight lap heat race win went to Fuson, and Andreotti won the Competition Suspension/Rod End Supply second heat. Bower maintains a 33 point lead over Fuson in the championship battle with just two races remaining. The USAC Western States Midgets and USAC West Coast 360 Sprint Cars will be at Ventura Raceway this Saturday night. For further information, go to www.usacracing.com.

Kyle Bell won the eight lap Legends of Kearney Bowl Super Modified exhibition race. Curtis Taylor took the lead at the start with Fred Guthmiller and Bell in close pursuit the whole way. On the last lap, Guthmiller made a move around the outside of Taylor down the backstretch to briefly grab the lead. However, the two got together at the end of the straightaway and Guthmiller slowed and Turn 3. Taylor kept going, but Bell made an inside pass in the final turn to take the win. Taylor settled for second ahead of Joe Kirk, Wayne Brabant and John Chrisman. Taylor and Guthmiller won the six lap heat races. Other drivers on hand included Ray Lawson Jr, Sean Delk, Ken Richert and Wayne Kalustian.

The King of Thunder Winged 360 Sprint Car Main Event was canceled. The drivers were on the track and moments away from getting the green flag when the ambulance was called to the pits and a red flag was waved. Legends of Kearney Bowl Super Modified car owner Jack Heinrich Jr suffered a heart attack and died.

There were 32 Winged 360 Sprint Cars, and they qualified in their respective heat race groups. Corey Day was in Group 2 and had the fastest overall time of 14 209, beating the 14.385 of Kyle Hirst, who was also part of the second group. The eight lap heat race wins went to Sean Becker, Hirst, Dominic Scelzi and Mitchell Faccinto. Becker won the four lap Trophy Dash ahead of Scelzi and Faccinto. Everybody who didn't earn a Top 5 finish in one of the eight lap heat races had to run the 12 lap B Main, which was won by Koen Shaw. Shaw jumped into the lead at the start ahead of Ashlyn Rodriguez. Michael Pombo made a last lap pass on Rodriguez to finish second. Rodriguez settled for third ahead of Danny Faria Jr and Ben Worth.

Racing returns on Friday, October 29th. The NARC/KWS Sprint Cars return along with the USAC/BCRA Midgets and the IMCA Stock Cars. For further information, go to www.racekingsspeedway.com.

Scelzi Is Sizzling Hot At Keller Auto Speedway

Hanford, CA...October 8...Dominic Scelzi won the 30 lap Winged 360 Sprint Car Main Event Friday night at Keller Auto Speedway. This was the opening night of the Cotton Classic and the 11th round of the Elk Grove Ford Sprint Car Challenge Tour, Presented by Abreu Vineyards. It was his second win in that series. Scelzi also won the 25 lap King Of Thunder Winged 410 Sprint Car Main Event, putting him up to 20 total wins on the circuit this year aboard SE Incorporated Truck Body Manufacturing/System 1 Pro Ignitions sponsored Sprinter.

Scelzi started on the outside front row and bolted into the lead at the green flag, followed by SCCT point leader Ryan Robinson and reigning NARC/KWS champion DJ Netto. Shane Golobic used a low pass in Turn 2 on Lap 5 to move into third and made an inside pass on the backstretch on Lap 11 to take second from Robinson. Corey Day made a move into third on Lap 12, but he ended up spinning in Turn 4 to avoid a spun Steven Kent and was hit by Kyle Hirst. The race was over for Day. Scelzi continued to lead Golobic and Netto on the restart. By lap 20, Scelzi was working his way through slower traffic, but a yellow flag waved for the final time on Lap 24 for Isaiah Vasquez. That didn't stop Scelzi as he resumed command on the restart with Netto motoring past Golobic on the backstretch for second. Scelzi went on to win ahead of Netto, Golobic, Rico Abreu, Colby Copeland, Justyn Cox, Kalib Henry, Robinson, Sean Becker and Hirst.

A strong turnout of 37 Winged 360 Sprint Car competitors were on hand for the occasion. They ran a different program than usual. The four eight lap heat races were won by Robinson, Netto, Day and Hirst. They had three eight lap qualifiers, which were won by Scelzi, Copeland and Abreu.

They ran two 10 lap B Mains with the first being won by Keith Day Jr. Day started up front and led every lap in victory. Max Mittry ran second for two laps before Tristan Guardino got by. However, Mittry regained second on Lap 7, and Day won ahead of Mittry, Guardino and Grant Champlin. The second B Main was won by Isaiah Vasquez. Vasquez led every lap in victory. Andy Forsberg was second most of the way. Michael Pombo took second on a Lap 6 restart, but Forsberg regained the position on the final lap as Vasquez won ahead of Forsberg, Pombo and Grant Duinkerken.

Earlier in the evening, Dominic Scelzi won the 25 lap King of Thunder Winged 410 Sprint Car Main Event. Justin Sanders earned a pole position start by virtue of his four lap Trophy Dash win ahead of Kyle Hirst and DJ Netto. Sanders piloted the Paul Silva owned entry into the early lead ahead of Hirst and Austin McCarl. Bud Kaeding moved past McCarl for third on Lap 2, but he surrendered the position to Netto a lap later. Netto slipped past Hirst for second on Lap 5, and a yellow flag waved for Hirst moments later. Sanders led Netto and Bud Kaeding on the restart as Scelzi had worked his way into fifth from his fourth row starting spot. It was a close battle for the lead for the next few laps. A bit of contact racing for the lead between Netto and Sanders resulted in Sanders taking a ride off of the turn and Netto slowing for a yellow flag on Lap 15. Sanders was not charged with the yellow as he kept going, and Bud Kaeding led Scelzi and Shane Golobic on the restart. A yellow flag waved for Mitchel Moles on the frontstretch on Lap 19. Scelzi took the lead from Bud Kaeding on the restart as Sanders moved back into third. Scelzi went on to win ahead of Bud Kaeding. Golobic made a late move around Sanders to finish third. Iest led the restart, and Love spun in Turn 4 for the final yellow flag on lap 151. The race didn't get restarted until the final lap, and that's the lap on which Pedroncelli made his move around Iest to grab the lead. Pedroncelli went on to score the victory with Iest driving Mike Naake's AG Center 59/Basilla Ranch Ford to a second place finish. Trevor Huddleston drove the Sunrise Ford/Lucas Oil Ford to a third place finish, followed by Todd Souza, Moore, Stafford Smith, Christian Rose, Drew, Tacuma Koga and Amber Stagle.

With only the November 6th race at Phoenix Raceway remaining, Pedroncelli trails Love by one point, 358-357. Only six points separate the Top 5 as Drew is third with 355 points, followed by Iest (353) and Moore (352).

Dylan Zampa won the 50 lap Berco Redwood Late Model Main Event. This was his sixth win of the season. The night was also the championship point finale for the NASCAR Whelen All American Series, and John Moore ended the evening with a 27 point lead over Thomas Martin as he won the division championship.

Calvin Hegje jumped into the early lead ahead of Michael Mitchell and Zampa. Aidan Daniels brought out a yellow flag on Lap 4. However, Michael Mitchell got back around Hegje for the lead on Lap 11. Zampa took second from Hegje on Lap 19. A final yellow flag waved for Kenna Mitchell on Lap 23. Michael Mitchell continued to lead Zampa and Hegje on the restart, but Junior Late Model champion Kylie Daniels slipped past Hegje for third on Lap 26. On the eighth lap, Nuno took the lead from Anderson, while Brandon White got past Bailey for third. White took second from Anderson on Lap 11, and a Lap 20 yellow flag waved as Anderson and Bailey tangled. Bailey was eliminated in the incident, and Nuno continued to lead White and Philpot on the restart. White briefly took the lead from Nuno on lap 22, but Nuno was back in front a lap later. Meanwhile, Philpot and Tyler Wentworth battled fiercely for third with Philpot grabbing the position on Lap 23. Philpot took second from White on Lap 26, only to see White nudge ahead to grab the position a lap later. The tenacious Philpot got the momentum on the final lap to make the pass for second as Nuno won ahead of Philpot, White, Wentworth, Price, Luke Caper, Anderson, John Yourd, Mike Stahl and Bailey.

Josh Whitfield won the 25 lap Riebe's Auto Parts Super Stock Main Event. This was the 10th win in 12 starts for Whitfield as he wrapped up the championship ahead of Andrew Peeler.

The only yellow flag of the race flew on Lap 15. Whitfield led Wilkins and White on the restart. White was pressuring Wilkins for second before making the pass on Lap 18. Despite some pressure from White in the closing laps, Whitfield prevailed for the impressive win. Wilkins settled for third, followed by Peeler, Smith, Walters, Garry Eisenhour, Terry Thomas Jr, Jeremy Fritts and Larry Thornhill.

Vic Theberge won the 20 lap F4 Main Event. He's the seventh different winner in 10 races. Matthew Fuhs used his second place finish to overtake Ray Molina for the division championship as Molina was unable to start the Main Event.

However, Brandon Frantz slipped past Crook for third on Lap 3. Both Fuhs and Franz got around Sproule on Lap 4, and Frantz put the moves on Fuhs for the lead a lap later. Crook was still maintaining third, but a yellow flag waved on Lap 11 for Crook. Fuhs took the lead from Frantz on the restart, but Frantz had problems as the yellow flag waved a lap later. With Frantz out of the race, Fuhs led Sproule on the restart. Theberge slipped past Sproule for second on Lap 14 as Crook took over third. The battle was close up front with Theberge taking the lead from Fuhs on Lap 18. Trey Daniels started on the pole and led a lap before his race came to an unfortunate end. Anderson took over ahead of Mitchell and Bella Thomsen. Colton Nelson took third from Thomsen on Lap 3. However, it would be a two-car battle for the win between Anderson and Mitchell. It was close for several laps before Mitchell made her winning move on Lap 14. Mitchell went on to victory ahead of Anderson, Nelson, Thomsen and Daniels.

Anthony Bean won the 20 lap Mini Cup/Bandolero Main Event. This was his first win in this division. Colton Nelson used a third place finish to wrap up the division championship ahead of Bella Thomsen.

Nelson took the early lead ahead of Bean and Dayton Broyles. A yellow flag waved on Lap 4. Bean continued to lead the restart ahead of Broyles and Nelson. Broyles took the lead from Bean on Lap 6 with Lucas Burton gaining third. However, Bean regained first on the seventh lap. The Top 4 competitors were running closely with Nelson taking third from Burton on Lap 10. Nelson and Bella Thomsen both got past Broyles on Lap 11, but Broyles moved into third on Lap 12. Bean began to pull away from the pack, leaving Nelson and Broyles to battle for second. Broyles gained that position on Lap 19, but Bean won by half a straightaway ahead a Broyles, Nelson, Thomsen and Burton.

Orland, CA...October the 8-9...Jake Van Tol had a big night at the Sixth Annual Battle Of The Axles  at Orland Raceway Saturday night. Van Tol is a long time Orland Raceway competitor who has won in several divisions. He picked up victories in both the Sport Modified and Winged Crate Sprint classes Saturday night. It was also an emotional night as the Van Tol family is mourning the loss of 10 month old baby Kade Van Tol.

The Editor's Viewpoint

It's Thursday night as I'm doing this. I already wrote quite a bit and decided I'd start over and see if I could be more succinct. The fewer words I use here, the better the chances that something comes out on Friday. Bottom line was I was not intending to put the big blog post up this week and I  didn't think the next post would even have this column in it. I changed my mind for this week, but this is probably it.

It struck me that all of the tracks that we covered championship seasons for on the blog this year finally wrapped up their point seasons last weekend. That's the good news. While I might want to do this blog post and then wrap it up for a while, there are still a few series left that we've been covering this year. That means a few more articles, although I may pick and choose races. Some may fall by the wayside where this blog is concerned. We'll see how I feel.

Antioch Speedway just had Donna Soares/Larry Damitz Memorial Hall of Fame night, which also included the Chet Thomson Memorial Hardtop race. For the most part, I have already offered opinions on certain aspects of this race in the previous two posts, so I'll try to avoid repeating myself. I still think that there's too many big things happening in one night and some of those things could be moved to their own nights. On the other hand, I could see management looking at it as an opportunity to make it big enough that people decide to come. This was a non IMCA night, so it makes sense if they were thinking that.

I'm out of the loop when it comes to ticket prices, and I missed something that could have an impact on why it seems like their attendance in the grandstands is down this year. I knew tracks would be struggling this year after what we went through last year. People are debating what they want to do with their entertainment dollars. That means some people are deciding not to go out for that night at the races, where they may have done it previously. I do think Antioch's media effort is lacking when it comes to hyping up why people should want to be there, but I'll leave it at that.

I've spoken in the last few years about the idea that Antioch Speedway probably could have added a buck to the general admission ticket prices. I think John was tempted to do that at the end of his run. Antioch had a lower price than either Petaluma or Watsonville, and I think the regular Antioch show was as worthy as the regular show at either one of those venues. The biggest factor that led to John not doing it was the fairgrounds deciding they wanted to add $2 to the parking price. Yeah, it's $7 to park, which does have a negative impact on people deciding to come out and watch. John was being blamed for something the fairgrounds was doing.

Antioch Speedway management decided to tack $5 onto the ticket price this year, and I can't help thinking they overreached. Since they are doing the weekly internet pay-per-view via their own service, they might have figured that they were going to get $20 out of people one way or the other. It costs $20 to watch the live pay-per-view at www.antiochepeedway.tv, and I don't know how well that's working. Hopefully they are seeing a return on that investment and building a revenue stream. From what I see from the grandstand pictures, it does seem like attendance is down.

Again, I'm not privy to the actual numbers, just the way the grandstands look on an average night. You are using judgment when you try to guess without seeing the actual numbers. The one positive is they are getting $5 more out of the people there. If the attendance numbers are down, as I suspect they are, there's still more revenue coming in from the people who are paying. If the people start coming back in the next couple of years, the track will be making more money on admission prices if they don't lower them. You go after every dollar you can get, because it ain't cheap promoting a race track. I don't blame management for raising the prices, but it was a gutsy call making it a $5 increase.

Overall, I think they did well with Hall of Fame night. Again, it didn't look like many people came out to watch. It could have been hyped better. Anybody watching from the grandstands or the pay-per-view saw some pretty good races. The Jay's Mobile Welding Service Hobby Stocks delivered 26 competitors, while there were 21 Wingless Spec Sprints. The Spec Sprints got to do a makeup race from the canceled feature two weeks ago, so drivers got plenty of track time for their season finale. Both divisions have done well this year, and I'm pleased to see that the Spec Sprint division that I had a hand in helping create with my friend Don O'Keefe Jr over 20 years ago is doing better this year.

Nobody dominated the Spec Sprints this year, which is something I like to see. I love the idea that you never know who's going to win on any given week. Josh Young and past Watsonville champion Jimmy Christian both got wins, but the champion is Ryon Siverling. I'm happy for Ryon and his family. His grandfather Burt Siverling was as loyal an NCMA Modified supporter as you would see. He never complained and probably had a better attendance record in a five-year span than anybody else in the group. He never worried about any on the track glory, and he never got a feature win. I don't even know if Ryon has one, but now he can add an Antioch championship to the title he won at Petaluma a few years back. I'm sure Burt would be proud of him. It's been a while since I've seen him, so I hope he's doing well.

One thing I can say about Brad Coelho is he has a passion for the sport. He and his father and brother were all good racers, and Brad still has it. He picked up his third Hobby Stock feature win and then drove the Tommy Thomson Hardtop to a podium finish. He's a good racer, and he knows a thing or two about how to make a car go faster. Larry McKinzie Jr has been through adversity this year and lost the point lead on an official call. However, he rebounded and ultimately won the division championship. He did a hell of a job.

I'm saddened to see the Super Stock division apparently on the way out. It doesn't come as a surprise to me as the numbers in this division have never been great. You didn't see double-digit car counts on a regular basis there since the 1990s for a couple of years. Management apparently never reached out to the promoter at Petaluma Speedway to see if there was any way they could do a series between the two tracks. I call that a missed opportunity. They also didn't do anything to make this race special considering it was Larry Damitz Memorial night and the Super Stocks were Larry's division of choice for the last seven seasons of his illustrious career.

I'm a firm believer in also laying some blame at the feet of the racers. There were local drivers who could have been there to support the show, but for whatever reason they didn't. When the numbers reach a certain level, management has to make a move. Given the success of IMCA Stock Cars this year, it's not like the track doesn't have something to replace Super Stocks with. It's just a shame that there will be some race cars that won't be legal for anything Antioch has in 2022 if what I hear is correct. Jim Freethy got the win and is the point leader. If they officially crown him as champion, this would be his second title. For what it was, the race was still entertaining.

I'm still not the biggest fan of mixing Hardtops and Sportsman cars on a regular basis. One race per year would be fine with me, but I don't think it should be a regular occurrence. You're still promoting two unique divisions that have different needs. On the other hand, Sportsman drivers are looking to race more and will go elsewhere if Merced Speedway doesn't want to schedule them enough. With the California Hardtop racers pretty much deciding not to support Antioch on Saturday, with the exception of Ron Ruiz, the Sportsman drivers made sure there were 15 total cars. They are the reason why a double digit car count was achieved.

There's still a serious leadership problem when it comes to Hardtops, because this thing could be doing a lot better with leadership who has an interest in making each race that is scheduled as good as it can possibly be. The Chet Thomson Memorial Hardtop race is the biggest race for this class in California, and it deserves good support. There are probably some things that could be done to make the race more special.

As it was, they ran 15 laps without a yellow flag. The Doug Braudrick owned Junkyard Dog is just so far ahead of everybody else that it's like taking candy from a baby at this point. Driver Joel Hannagan can pick and choose his spots, take his time passing everybody and put a whooping on everybody once he gets the lead. He won his second Chet Thomson Memorial race, and there was some good racing throughout the pack.

As for Hall of Fame night itself, I have to give credit to Chris Briggs and the way he organized things. The community is definitely rallying behind him, and that makes it possible to do new things in the future and really improve on this event. Bobby Hogge III was presented with his award a week earlier. Six inductees were to be honored on this occasion. Scott Busby was unable to attend, and Lonnie Williams has passed away. His family was there to receive his award, and Debbie Clymens, Marv Wilson, Steve Hendren and Don Shelton were there in person.

In addition to the nice awards, Briggs presented some really cool posters for each inductee that had photos from throughout their careers. It was definitely a nice touch. Past drivers were encouraged to come out and see some old faces. I don't know who all showed up, but I did hear that Late Model stars John Silva and Bobby Scott Jr were among them. That definitely added to the coolness factor of this event. Chris is enjoying the moment as he should, but planning is already underway for who should get in next year and how the event should go.

The track finally released information regarding the Hobby Stock event that's coming on October 29th and 30th. I still agree with what Larry Adams was saying when we spoke about this race. It should have only been a one-day show, but management definitely saw dollar signs. Because Larry was working hard behind the scenes to make this into something special, a $1,000 to win race became $5,000 to win and $200 minimum to start. I'd be floored if local support alone didn't deliver 30 cars, but I don't know how much bigger it will be beyond that.

By all rights, this race should attract 60 Hobby Stock drivers from throughout Northern and Central California, but management has decided they are going with Antioch rules. When you're running for points, it makes perfect sense. If you're not running for points, there's no reason why you couldn't open it up a little bit to see about getting people from out of town. There will probably be drivers from Merced and Bakersfield, maybe even Watsonville. However, the rules won't be particularly inviting for the Marysville, Chico and Orland crowd. I hope it goes well, and it should. However, I doubt it will do as well as it could have if the track had been a little bit more open with the rules.

I know Hobby Stock enthusiasts will be hoping to make a big statement, especially in light of the fact that the IMCA Stock Cars have come on so strong this year. Management again restated that IMCA Stock Cars are not a threat to eliminate Hobby Stocks, which should be obvious. They've always been a threat to the Super Stocks along with the fact that the Super Stocks aren't delivering the numbers. However, IMCA Stock Cars are a notch above the Hobby Stocks. When the track makes the announcement that they want to run IMCA Hobby Stocks, then you can start raising concerns that the Hobby Stocks as we know them are on the chopping block. Right now, you can say the IMCA Stock Cars are becoming a full-fledged attraction at Antioch Speedway.

I will put this at the feet of Promoter Chad Chadwick. He saw something here and was unwavering in his commitment to make it happen. Drivers are clamoring to get cars for this division, and recent races have seen the debut of drivers like past Mini Stock champion Jason Jennings, past Street Stock racer Dave Hill and current IMCA Sport Modified title winner Fred Ryland. You could legitimately see B Mains next year with his class. It will rise to the level that the management could even entertain making the division a headliner in the future. As car counts grow in this and other divisions, scheduling will become easier.

The IMCA Stock Cars had the biggest debut of a new division in modern Antioch Speedway history with 16 cars for the Bill Bowers Memorial last year. Granted, this was $1,000 to win and really got a push when it came to promoting. As far as a championship division goes, the Wingless Spec Sprints had the best debut season of any new division in the modern era at the track, never dropping below 12 cars with about 30 active cars. The IMCA Stock Cars had 29 different cars and 10 different winners this year. Yeah, they are a hit and are getting bigger. They will be back this Saturday night along with the IMCA Modifieds and IMCA Sport Modifieds.

After Watsonville and Antioch took their shots at big IMCA Modified/IMCA Sport Modified shows, Bakersfield had their 35th Annual Bud Nationals last weekend. The good news is they had better numbers than Antioch. At about 30 cars in each division, it still didn't match what Watsonville had. However, the Pro Stocks and Hobby Stocks helped get them near 100 cars on Friday, and the addition of the American Stocks on Saturday put it into the 100's.

The racing was good. Even though driver support wasn't nearly as good as it had been a few years ago, they still put on a good show. Ethan Dotson bagged $3,200 by winning both the IMCA Modified and IMCA Sport Modified Main Events. Justin Crockett managed to get a win and a second with the Pro Stocks, giving him $2,100 for the weekend. The night was about as good as management could hope for, so I don't think Scott Schweitzer was too disappointed.

Keller Auto Speedway had the Cotton Classic, which featured both the Winged 410 Sprint Cars and Winged 360 Sprints. Both the Sprint Car Challenge Tour and NARC/King Of The West Series got to headline. I think the Friday show went a little bit better than Saturday. For whatever reason, management really dragged things out on Saturday much longer than they needed to. They also did the sort of program for the NARC Sprint Cars that made it in easier to go a bit longer.

The track conditions were less than desired, but I have to admit that management is doing the best they can to please the racers. The problem is, you're going to have various different opinions coming your way. If you're trying to make every racer happy, you're inevitably going to fail. You have to know how you want the track to be and how you want your program to be and just stick to your guns. Being a past racer himself, I know Peter Murphy is a racer's promoter. This one got away from them and stretched beyond 11:00 pm. I'm not saying the racing wasn't good, because it seemed to go well to me. I think the Legends of Kearney Bowl guys were racing a little too hard given the fact that they are doing an exhibition. I can't imagine the group was happy with the little crash they had at the end of their race.

Despite them running late, they had the Winged 360 Sprint Cars on the track to close things out on Saturday when the red flag waved. The ambulance headed to the pits, and we got the bad news of the passing of Legends of Kearney Bowl car owner Jack Heinrich Jr. At that point, it was decided to end the show without running the Winged 360 Sprint Car Main Event. I know people are going to have negative opinions on what happened. Some things are out of your control, but you definitely have to control the things you know you can. They could have run the show better and got done much sooner, but you can't control when somebody might have a health issue. They'll try again with another NARC/KWS Sprint Car show on October 29th.

I can't help thinking Petaluma Speedway would have been better off to cancel last weekend once they realized they would not be running the USAC West Coast 360 Sprint Cars and Western States Midgets. The Midgets were able to move the race to Hanford that would have been at Placerville. The problem was the Wingless Spec Sprint drivers had a show booked at Antioch, which split the potential car count. 13 drivers came to Petaluma, which was the highest count of the four divisions. Both the WMR Midgets and 600 Micro Sprints had 10 cars, but the IMCA Modifieds only had six.

The show went on, but it wasn't anything particularly special. Yeah, you have nights like this. However, when you're running races beyond the point window, the goal ought to be bigger car counts than you normally get. You could clearly see that they weren't going to do great numbers with what was scheduled, but they have a Sprint Car Challenge Tour race on the horizon for this weekend. It might have been better to focus on that. On the other hand, I'm sure people enjoyed being out there for a night at the races, and there's nothing wrong with that.

I still think the track needs to have somebody else handling the computers and making sure accurate points are posted on the website. That just hasn't been done with any regular consistency for the past few years. The guy they have doing that is just trying to do too much and things suffer because of it. We all saw the IMCA Modified season end with Anthony Slaney the apparent winner. Upon audit, IMCA discovered that Michelle Paul was the actual champion. The web page still lists that as Slaney. It's a pretty big mistake when it affects your point leader, and these are the kinds of mistakes that cause drivers to decide not to support a track. I've witnessed such things through the years.

Shasta Speedway had a big Late Model and North State Modified Series event scheduled for this past weekend. I initially thought I might get a peek at the live statistics since they had a page opened at Race Monitor. However, that malfunctioned. They ran the race, but I couldn't tell you who won or how many cars they actually had. This has been the problem since Dave Twyman took over the place prior to the 2016 season. On one hand, it's great that he did that and kept racing alive. However, you have to promote a track when you're the guy in charge. He's done nothing to create awareness of what they do to make people want to be there.

When Ukiah Speedway had the Super Modifieds as part of their program a couple of weeks ago, Dave was one of the drivers in the field. He was heard in conversation saying that he hopes to sit down with Bill MacAnally and Tony Noceti to create a series between the tracks. Here's the problem with that. What reason would Roseville, Stockton or even Madera have to want to work with Shasta? What sort of support do they get and what series have they built in the years that Dave has been running the place? Maybe they have something, but we wouldn't know it from the word that comes out of that place.

Tracks working together is only effective if each place has something to offer the other. Right now, I think Roseville, Stockton and Madera have something that could help the other track, but those tracks don't work very well together. I think it's wishful thinking for Dave to think that these tracks would suddenly want to put him in their sphere. He should be grateful that he continues to have a relationship with the North State Modifieds, who do deliver a show. If he wants to be taken seriously as a promoter, however, he has to do a lot better than he's currently doing.

When you become a promoter, you have to do a couple of things. First and foremost, you have to pay the bills and keep the gates open. For the most part, Dave does that. However, several races have been canceled during his time as promoter for various reasons. One of the closest dirt tracks to Shasta, Orland Raceway, is another place that has certainly had its struggles. While I'm not happy with the lack of information that comes out of Orland, at least you do hear some things. The track does try to do special things for the various divisions that they offer, and Rich Hood came in to save Orland at the same time Dave came in to do what he did at Shasta.

I know this hasn't been a great year at Orland Raceway, but they've also continued to run the races as scheduled. Friday and Saturday were the annual Battle of the Axles events, and they put a little bit more prize money on the line. They did achieve double-digit car counts last week for the Wingless Spec Sprints, Sport Modifieds and Hobby Stocks, so that's a positive. It was an emotional weekend for Jake Van Tol, who is still mourning the passing of his 10-month-old son Kade. Jake managed to win both the Sport Modified and Winged Crate Sprint races on Saturday night. I don't know that they had spectacular numbers at the track, but they still kept the show going and ended the season on a positive note.

Dixon Speedway wrapped up their Micro Sprint championship season with around 60 total cars for their four division program. Everything had double digits, and the Wingless 600 Micros had enough cars for a B Main. They've been the division with the best support all year long. They have the Lonnie Kaiser Memorial race coming up in November, but Promoter Jeremy Prince is taking another shot at something a little bit different on the one-fifth mile dirt oval. On October 30th, they will be having a Mini Stock 500 lap Enduro race.

It was about seven years ago when the track started flirting with Mini Stock and Dwarf Car races. Size wise, the track compares to the Sacramento Stadium Oval, which has featured all manner of divisions. There is potential in Dixon. With the successful Micro Sprint program that they have, I can see management not jumping in to do other things. In this case, Dixon Speedway supporter Nathan Corn was pushing to try another Enduro. It's basically a stock Mini Stock class, which is comparable somewhat to the Hornet division. A basic car. I don't even know if the Hornet Mini Stocks are legal, but I know some racers are making those inquiries.

It's 500 laps of racing and an opportunity to go out and have fun. A team can build a car and take turns with different drivers running 100 laps each. It depends on what they want to do. They'll get $500 to win, $300 for second and $200 for third at 10 to 15 cars. I suspect they should hit that minimum number. If they can get it up to 16 cars, it becomes $750 to win. On the off chance they get 21 cars, it's now $1,000 to win. If they get 16 or more cars, I can't imagine management not wanting to schedule another one of these deals next year. I wholeheartedly endorse this, so I hope it goes well.

Since it is October 30th, some drivers who might have supported this race are going to be down at Kern County Raceway. That's because the Dan Myrick promoted West Coast Sport Compact Series has a point race. It's not just any race. Dan has been busting his ass increasing the purse from the normal deal. It was just announced today that in addition to $1,000 to win and $800 for second, it's now $650 for third, and drivers receive a minimum of $100 to take the green flag. The B Main winner gets $100 and a heat race win get them $40. If they don't achieve 20 cars minimum for this show, which runs in support of the NARC/KWS Sprint Cars, it just shows that Mini Stock drivers don't want to support big money races. I think they will have a good turnout.

What I've always liked about Dan is how hard he works to promote this group. This division has never had the kind of promoting that he has done on the dirt. He even thought far enough outside the box that he launched the series on the 1/5 mile dirt oval at Lemoore Raceway. I wish they'd come back there at some point, but it becomes less likely when tracks like Kern Raceway, Keller Auto Speedway and Merced Speedway all want the series. It takes the pressure off of Dan, who had to actually promote the track when they had the Lemoore races. That meant risking his own money, and losing more times than he came out ahead. In any case, the WCSC is still going strong, and the October 30th race at Kern Raceway should be a winner.

It seems like Merced Speedway hasn't had that many races this year, but they don't run every week. It's more of a relaxed schedule. None of the regular point divisions have had more than a dozen races total. However, they've had some special Sprint Car stuff and some big events for the IMCA Modifieds and Sport Modifieds. They are getting ready to have some big events to wrap up the year, and I'm sure Promoter Doug Lockwood is looking forward to taking things up a notch next year.

Merced Speedway really didn't get to have much racing last year. They did have a couple of big shows, but Lockwood made a big splash by launching the IMCA California Speedweek Series that year. This year, he took it from six races to eight races, and I know it was a stressful thing to handle at times. However, what he did helped spread some positivity in the sport. I appreciate the efforts Doug made there and what he's trying to do with Merced Speedway.

The fact is, racing fans at Merced have talked for years about how they'd like to see some more open wheel stuff on the schedule. When John M Soares had the track, he did bring the World of Outlaws to town. Doug has them on the schedule once again, along with the Sprint Car Challenge Tour and some USAC stuff. This doesn't mean the regular divisions have been neglected. In fact, the track makes it a point to do big things for the regular classes throughout the year. This was something Ed Parker had been doing before, but it seems like the track has more big shows now.

In fact, a big show has already been announced for 2022, and Doug hasn't even sat down to put the schedule together yet. Al Miller was a car owner and racer at San Jose Speedway. He had a reputation for fast cars and winning, which he definitely instilled in his sons Robert and Randy Miller. After he passed away, the Miller Brothers created the Al Miller Memorial race for Pro Stock racing. They ran one race in Nevada, one at the Stockton Dirt Track and one at Antioch, all featuring the Pro Stocks.

This year, the brothers made it an IMCA Sport Modified race at Merced Speedway, and they raised the stakes to $5,000 to win. Needless to say, it was a successful effort, and all parties left happy with the way it went. The IMCA Sport Modifieds will again have the biggest race for the division on the West Coast in 2022. The Al Miller Memorial race will happen at Merced on April 9, 2022 paying $5,000 to win. In the meantime, Lockwood is getting ready for the John Fore Jr/Bob Smith Memorial race on October 22nd and 23rd.

Both nights have increased purses as they feature IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sport Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars and Hobby Stocks. This includes $2,000 to win for the IMCA Modifieds, $1,500 to win for the IMCA Sport Modifieds and $1,000 to win for both the Hobby Stocks and IMCA Stock Cars on Saturday among the increased payout. This has become the traditional big season ender for the track, but the challenges of running races last year saw Lockwood scheduling some November stuff. That included USAC Midgets and some special races for the regular classes. That will again happen this year.

What drew my attention was the November 26th show. If the weather holds, they are going to be paying tribute to George Steitz. As far as I know, this is the first time George has been given such an honor. I know the track hasn't formerly created a Hall of Fame just yet. However, Legends night also included some special awards for some of the greats. They were presented awards as Legends of Merced Speedway. Perhaps Merced Speedway could do something like that for George on November 26th? I'm sure his family would appreciate that.

They will be paying good money, including $2'000 to win for the IMCA Modifieds, $1,200 to win for the IMCA Sport Modifieds and $750 each to win for the IMCA Stock Cars and Hobby Stocks. At this time, these are the divisions being featured at the two special shows. That's probably more than enough and should produce a good enough car count. I wouldn't rule out the possibility that the Mini Stocks, Mini Late Models or even the Sportsman division got an opportunity to be there on one of those nights, but I also wouldn't expect it. I do expect good racing with what's on the agenda as Merced brings a close to the 2021 season.

The important thing is the tradition lives on in Merced. They were unable to crown any champions last year, which broke a streak going back to the 1950s. I put an asterisk next to that, because it's not like there wasn't intent to crown champions. It was just impossible to open with severe restrictions. When things loosened up just a little bit, that's when Doug added the extra stuff that went into November. As it is, they are crowning champions for all of their regular divisions this year, and the numbers they are maintaining are about as good as we can hope for under the circumstances. The show goes on.

I had a few more thoughts on my mind and could definitely add to this column. However, I want to get this posted on Friday. Therefore, I am going to end it right here. I can't believe our media effort for the year is just about over. It's been an interesting ride for sure. Changes are in store, and we'll see how all of that goes. Until next time...
