Find Victory Lane on NASCAR Opening Night
Article Credit: DRC Motorsports Media
Coos Bay, OR (4/10/2022) With rainouts across the region, Coos Bay stood alone as the only track in the Pacific Northwest running this past Saturday Night, with many visiting drivers eager to get their first laps of 2022 under their belts.
A young man who has had as much success as anyone in a Super Late Model in Coos Bay, Preston Luckman broke in a new motor with a dominant display en route to another feature win.
Devon Brown, who looked to be Luckman's closest competitor, had his night end early with a scary crash into the pit exit and turn 1 wall. Brown was debuting a brand new car that the team had just finished, and showed plenty of speed including an impressive heat race win.
With Luckman out front and Brown out of the running, Jordan Wright and Bj Donofrio found themselves in a tight battle for 2nd. Wright would outlast Donofrio in the end, taking 2nd ahead of Donofrio, Wayne Butler and Brown.
The Street Stocks looked to be an all McIntyre show up front for the majority of the main event. It was the returning Kelly McIntyre taking the lead on the start, with Loren McIntyre following close behind in 2nd. Toby Mcintyre quickly moved into 3rd but a near spin dropped him back to 5th behind Graig Osborne and Justin Krossman.
Kelly McIntyre would lead the opening 13 circuits, before one slip up on a Lap 24 restart allowed Loren McIntyre to move into the top spot and Toby to slide through into 2nd.
While the McIntyre clan controlled the Top 3 spots, Krossman, Dyllan Siewell and Shannon Collins were all in a heated battle for 5th-7th respectively.
Loren McIntyre would go on to claim the caution marred feature, with Toby Mcintyre coming in 2nd. Osborne and Kelly McIntyre would make contact on the final lap moving Osborne to 3rd, with Krossman and Kelly rounding out the Top 5. Heat races went to Kelly and Toby Mcintyre.
Despite being a late arrival, Ryan Emry was once again untouchable in the Sportsman Late Models. Josh Kralicek gave him a good run for his money in the opening few laps, but a few slipups allowed Emry to open up a massive lead. While Ryan Emry continued to lead, his son Jacob was patiently and carefully picking his spots, climbing from 5th to 2nd over the course of the 20 lap race. When it was all said and done, it was an Emry family 1-2 as Ryan Emry won with Jacob in 2nd. Kralicek, Dustin Hitner and Neil Dubisar completed the Top 5.
The Mini Outlaws provided some of the closest racing we saw on opening night. In a feature that saw just one lone caution Mike Beaudoin led all but one lap in a heavily contested tilt.
While Beaudoin led most of the race, Jeff Thurman was there to keep him honest, racing door to door with the 57 lap after lap, even grabbing the lead briefly on lap 14. Thurman's night would end prematurely however, as he pulled off with 2 to go.
This would leave the door open for Hornet winner Don Briggs Sr to take a stab at Beaudoin. Though he was able to get to his bumper, he just didn't have enough to make the pass, as Beaudoin won ahead of Briggs, Jim Van Loon, Nicole Emry and Jamie Daniels. The Van Loons, Jim and Bid, swept the earlier heat races.
The Hornets provided a solid 17 cars for opening night, with Washington's Don Briggs Sr leading the 20 Lap feature wire to wire.
Briggs once again found himself in a battle with a Beaudoin, with Dan this time applying pressure for the top spot. Though Beaudoin stayed glued to Briggs for most of the race, he never found a way past, with Briggs going on to win the Main Event. Beaudoin, Hannah Robison, Alex Butler and Ken Fox rounded out the Top 5. Beaudoin and Fox won the division's respective heat races.
With Griff Smith graduated from the Jr Stingers, a new Era began for the class this Saturday Night.
It was Tucker Dubisar who found himself out front early, with Max Haga and DJ Nelson following close behind.
As the laps clicked off, 2 drivers made their way from the back of the field to the front, Drake Vincent and Cameron Metzgus.
Vincent would go from 8th to eventually the lead on a wild lap 14, with Metzgus close behind. For the remainder of the race, Vincent would hold off multiple challenges from Metzgus to win his first Main Event. Metzgus, Eli Luckman, Tucker Dubisar and Nelson completed the Top 5.
Coos Bay Speedway will weather permitting be back in action this Saturday Night with a 6 division show, including the America's Mattress Super Late Models, Sportsman Late Models, Three Rivers Casino Street Stocks, Mini Outlaws, Hornets and Jr Stingers. This event will also mark the first Lucky Rides for the Kids this season, as children will get the chance to ride around the track in a racecar.
DeCarlo Gets It Done At Antioch Speedway,
Smith, Welborn, Foulger Also Win
Point leader Nick DeCarlo #17 won his second IMCA Modified Main Event Saturday night at Antioch Speedway. Photo by Katrina Kniss
Antioch,
CA...April 9...Nick DeCarlo won the 20 lap IMCA Modified Main Event
Saturday night at Antioch Speedway. It was the second win of the season
for the current point leader, and he overtook rookie Trevor Clymens to
get the job done.
Clymens raced into the early
lead ahead of Sean Wilson and Kenneth Robles. DeCarlo started deeper in
the field, and Clymens had a straightaway advantage wiped out by a Lap 7
yellow flag. Clymens continued to lead Robles on the restart with
DeCarlo already up to third. DeCarlo went around Robles on the
frontstretch to take second on the ninth lap. DeCarlo was working the
outside groove very well and made an outside pass on the backstretch on
the 12th lap to take the lead from Clymens. A late yellow flag bunched
the field on Lap 17, but it didn't stop DeCarlo. As DeCarlo charged on
ahead of everybody else, Aaron Crowell made an outside pass in Turn 4 to
take second from Clymens. DeCarlo got the win ahead of Crowell, and
Bobby Motts Jr beat Clymens back to the checkered flag in a drag race
for third. Robles settled for fifth.
Bakersfield visitor Ryan Smith #250 won the Super Stock Main Event. Photo by Katrina Kniss
Ryan Smith
won an eventful 20 lap Super Stock Main Event. The division got a major
boost when a race down south got canceled due to the weather, sending
several drivers to Antioch Speedway. For the first 12 laps, Tri State
Pro Stock Series star Richard Brace Jr led as Ryan.Smith and.Chris Smith
battled with Jay Sears for the second position. A backstretch pass on
Lap 13 gained Ryan Smith the lead. Sears and Brace battled fiercely for
second until Sears headed pitside on Lap 17. Ryan Smith went on to win
ahead of Brace, Jim Freethy, Jimmy Robbins and Chad Hammer.
Misty
Welborn won the 20 lap Pacific Coast General Engineering Hobby Stock
Main Event. On this occasion, she started on the front row and proceeded
to lead all 20 laps in victory. Michaela Taylor gave chase early on
before surrendering to Larry McKinzie Jr. When McKinzie had problems and
stalled in Turn 1, he was clobbered in the rear end by Jewell Crandall
for a Lap 9 yellow flag. Welborn led Taylor on the restart, leaving the
battle for third. Aiden Ponciano held that position until being passed
by Chris Long on Lap 18. Welborn won by a straightaway ahead of Taylor,
Long, Taylor DeCarlo and Ponciano.
Troy Foulger
won the 20 lap IMCA Stock Car Main Event. He started in the back as
Anthony Giuliani took the early lead ahead of reigning champion Travis
Dutra. Foulger got up to third very quickly and made an inside pass in
Turn 4 on Lap 4 to take second. Foulger worked on reeling in Giuliani.
The duo ran a couple of side by side laps before Foulger went low in
Turn 2 on Lap 12 to take the lead. Giuliani had a mechanical issue on
Lap 16 for a yellow flag. Foulger led Dutra and Jason Robles on the
restart, and they would finish in that order as Jason Jennings and Joe
Gallaher completed the Top 5.
Racing continues
next Saturday night with a visit from the WMR Midgets and the season
debut for the Wingless Spec Sprints. Also competing will be the Delta
Dwarf Cars and Mini Stocks. For further information, go to

Open Wheel Racing On The Schedule
For Antioch Speedway Saturday Night
"Rockin" Richard Panfili #44 is the last remaining Wingless Spec Sprint driver from 1999 who is still racing with the division. Photo by Katrina Kniss
Antioch,
CA...Racing fans will be treated to something a little bit different
when action resumes at Antioch Speedway this Saturday night. The Contra
Costa County Fairgrounds facility will see the season debut of the
popular Wingless Spec Sprint division along with Delta Dwarf Cars, Mini
Stocks and an appearance by the WMR Midgets. There will also be an
Easter Egg Hunt for the kids during intermission.
It
was 23 years ago when Antioch Speedway debuted a brand new Sprint Car
class that was geared towards making this division more affordable to
drivers on a tighter budget. The man who wrote the rules, Don O'Keefe
Jr, labeled them SPEC Sprints, which stood for Sprint Parts Economy
Class at the time. No other track in the state had this division.
They
never fielded less than 12 cars throughout the entire season, making it
the most successful launching of a division at Antioch Speedway in the
modern era. Several tracks followed Antioch Speedway's lead in starting
their own classes, and the popular Hunt Wingless Sprint Series also took
its cue from Antioch.
Two of the drivers on
that original roster still compete at the speedway these days.
Second-generation racer Dan Gonderman is racing with the IMCA Stock Cars
these days, although he still has a Sprint Car at his disposal. Rick
Panfili was also there for the first race and has competed every season
since. Other drivers might be better known and get more of the glory,
but it's dependable racers like Rick that the track counts on. Panfili
has logged quite a bit of seat time and is respected among his peers.
He
started racing with the NCMA 30 years ago. He decided to get involved
with Spec Sprint racing at Antioch to cut down on some of the traveling
he had to do and race closer to home. He's been Top 3 ranked in the
standings on multiple occasions and finished as high as second. Second
is also his high mark in Main Event competition, which he's done
multiple times. Budget always dictates how much Rick will get to race,
but we will see him compete on the dirt oval this Saturday night.
Bob
Newberry has garnered a bit more of the glory. He's fourth ranked on
the Wingless Spec Sprint win list with a pair of championships at
Antioch. He's also a champion at Chico and nearly got the job done at
Petaluma as well. Wherever he goes, he's fast. He was at Antioch last
Saturday night giving his car a shake down run. The reigning champion is
Ryon Siverling. His grandfather Burt ran with the NCMA in the 1990s.
Some of the drivers to watch for include ageless veteran Roy Fisher,
Kevin Box, Jeff Scotto, Tony Bernard, James East and Steve Maionchi.
The
WMR Midgets were introduced by Mike McCluny back in 2019. McCluney has
been involved in this sport for many years, and he saw the need to
create an open wheel division that could bring drivers up from the Micro
Sprint ranks.
Midget racing needed a shot in
the arm, and the Ecotec rules package provided by the WMR Midgets was
just the ticket. The WMR has seen some talented racers, such as Sage
Boardenave, Nate Wait and reigning champion Blake Bower come up from the
600 Micros. Bower also won the USAC Western States Midget championship
last season.
Perhaps the hardest driver to beat
on the track is David Prickett. Prickett was the champion a year
earlier and is seen as the barometer for the division. If you can beat
him, you're beating somebody who is very fast. Prickett recently got the
win at Marysville. He also fields multiple cars in an effort to get
other drivers involved. Some of the stars to watch for this week include
Kyle Hawse, Todd Hawse, Megan Moorhead, Bryant Bell and Shawn Arriaga.
The
Delta Dwarf Cars have proven to be very entertaining. The man with the
target on his back will be two-time champion Danny Wagner. Wagner has
kicked off the season with back-to-back victories. This leaves Devan
Kammermann in hot pursuit of his very first win, while others such as
Ellie Russo, Jack Haverty, Sean Catucci, Travis Day and Chance Russell
are also in the thick of the battle.
There is
also the father and son team of David Rosa and his son, David Michael
Rosa. The family has been involved in racing at the speedway for several
years, going back to David's older brother Anthony Rosa, who raced
Stock Cars in the late 1970s. David's other brother Frank Rosa raced
Street Stocks and Mini Trucks as well.
David
has earned the accolades as a two-time Street Stock champion and the
driver who has more wins in that class than anybody else in speedway
history. He's also had some success in Super Stocks and the Figure 8,
but he's added some wins in Dwarf Cars as well.
What
makes Dwarf Car racing more enjoyable for the elder Rosa is the fact
that he gets to compete with his son. Daughter Victoria Rosa competed
with David in the Super Hobby Stock class with some success.
However,
David Michael Rosa has picked up several wins in the Dwarf Car ranks.
The two Rosa's race very hard when they're on the track together. It's
not just everybody else they want to beat. They want to beat each other.
More importantly, a night at the race track is a good bonding
experience for the father and son.
The Mini
Stocks round out what is sure to be an exciting program. Management
introduced the division prior to the 2020 season as a way to give new
racers an entry point. Hobby Stock star Jess Paladino and Tom Brown are
the previous two champions. Brown actually competed at the speedway in
Mini Trucks several years earlier, and he's a two-time champion at
Petaluma Speedway as well. Brown ran strong at opener, but he ended up
settling for second behind Randy Miramontez.
The
Speedway has added several new local drivers. This includes Laina
Bales, Dana Gardner, Dan Abitz and Ryan Graham. The latter two are
competing in Ford Pintos, which is the same model as Brown.
Unfortunately, Abitz saw his race end early last time out when he
tangled with Gardner in Turn 4 during their heat race. He and Graham
will be hoping to give it a good run this Saturday night.
Grandstands will open at 4:00 pm with the first race starting at 6:00 pm.

Johnson Outduels Carrick For Win,
Frazier, Campion, McClelland Other Ocean Speedway Winners
Chase Johnson #28 emerged triumphantly after his Ocean Sprint Car Main Event win at Ocean Speedway. Photo by Tom Sagmiller
Watsonville,
CA...April 8...Chase Johnson won the 30 lap Ocean Sprint Car, presented
by Taco Bravo, Main Event Friday night at Ocean Speedway. Johnson was
piloting the pitstopusa.com sponsored Sprinter, owned by Sean Quinn.
Johnson had picked up a win a week earlier at Tulare Thunderbowl.
Bud
Kaeding raced into the early lead ahead of Rickey Sanders. Tanner
Carrick settled into third on Lap 2 and slipped past Sanders for second
on Lap 5. However, Carrick did a complete 360 in Turn 2 for a Lap 7
yellow flag. Despite the fact that he kept going, track rules dictate
that he had to go to the back of the pack. Kaeding led Sanders on the
restart, but Blake Carrick made a low pass in Turn 2 of the ninth lap to
take second from Sanders. An outside pass on the frontstretch of the
16th lap gained Blake Carrick the lead from Kaeding. Johnson made an
outside pass on the backstretch on Lap 20 to grab second from Kaeding,
and he went low in Turn 2 on the 26th lap to grab the lead from Blake
Carrick. Johnson went on to victory from there with Blake Carrick
settling for second ahead of Kaeding, Sanders, Jake Haulot, Jake
Andreotti, JJ Ringo, Kurt Nelson, Tanner Carrick and Ashlyn Rodriguez.
Blake
Carrick was the quickest of 20 qualifiers with a lap of 11.487, beating
the 11.595 of Tanner Carrick. The three eight lap heat race wins went
to Blake Carrick, Johnson and Haulot. Kaeding won the six lap Trophy
Dash ahead of Sanders.
Marcus Frazier won the
20 lap IMCA Sport Modified Main Event. Igor Gradzuk set the early pace
ahead of Frazier and past champion Jim DiGiovanni. Frazier took the lead
on the fifth lap, and Gradzuk brought out a yellow flag on Lap 7.
Frasier led DiGiovanni and Orion Messina on the restart, but Messina saw
his race come to an end on the ninth lap. Frazier continued to lead
DiGiovanni and 2020 champion Adriane Frost, and they finished in that
order. Gradzuk settled for fourth, followed by Charlie Hunter, Gavin
Espino, Aaron Farrell, Max Baggett, Jonathan Hagio and Duane Bieser. The
eight lap heat race wins went to Frazier and Hagio.
Terry Campion #83 won the Hobby Stock Main Event. Photo by Tom Sagmiller
Terry
Campion won the 20 lap Hobby Stock Main Event. The two-time champion
jumped into the lead from the start ahead of Ryan Muller and defending
champion Joe Gallaher. Mueller had problems on the opening lap. Campion
led Gallaher and Jerry Skelton on the restart. They finished in that
order with Brady Muller ending up fourth, followed by Ryan Muller, Steve
Remde and Dan Fassler. Campion also won the eight lap heat race.
2020
champion Ryan McClelland won the 15 lap Four Banger Main Event. Kenny
Stragalinos led three laps before he encountered problems with Nicole
Beardsley gaining the lead ahead of Dylan Chairez. However, McClelland
quickly moved into second and took the lead from Beardsley on Lap 6.
Troy Moore moved by Beardsley for second on Lap 8, and McClelland went
on to victory ahead of Moore, Nicole Beardsley, Travis Van Gilder, Nick
Scentani, TJ Santos, Bill Beardsley, Charlie Hernandez, Peter Vennerus
and Chairez. Stragalinos and Moore won the six lap heat races.
Roy Iler won the Police N Pursuit Main Event. Photo by Tom Sagmiller
Roy
Iler won the 15 lap Police N Pursuit Main Event. Iler is the reigning
champion, and he represents the San Benito County Sheriff's Office. Iler
would lead from start to finish with Scott's Valley Police Department
representative John Hohmann a race long second, followed by Kyle Wowack,
Kevin Elliott, Jackie Yeung, Pat Sullivan, Neal Carter and AJ Waltrip.
Iler also won the six lap heat race.
Racing
resumes next Friday night with the Ocean Sprint Cars back in action
along with the Hobby Stocks, Mini Stocks and South Bay Dwarf Cars. For

Peery, Flowers, King Open Season
At Siskiyou Golden Speedway
Yreka,
CA...April 8...Ryan Perry won the 25 lap IMCA Sport Modified Main Event
Friday night at Siskiyou Golden Speedway. Peery is the reigning track
champion, and he had to hold off reigning Southern Oregon Speedway
champion Matt Sanders to get the win. This was the season opener for the
Yreka Fairgrounds track.
Peery had the lead
from the start with Trevor Points an early second. An outside pass on
the frontstretch on Lap 4 gained Sanders second, but Points kept the
battle close. The leaders were in traffic within seven laps as Sanders
and Points battled for second. Steven Sanders found his way into fourth
by the 15th lap. Peery drove a flawless race and earned the victory
ahead of Matt Sanders, Points, Steven Sanders, Cory Biggs, Isaac
Sanders, Chad Wormington, Gary Foster, Gabriel Armstrong and Dennis
Jorgensen. Past champion Ethan Killingsworth and Points were the eight
lap heat race winners.
Three-time reigning
champion Scott Flowers kicked off his title defense by winning the 30
lap Outlaw Pro Stock Association Main Event. 2021 championship runnerup
Johnny Cobb set the early pace ahead of Flowers and Colby Hammond. A low
move in Turn 4 of the third lap gained Jeff Haudenshild third. Cobb and
Flowers soon found themselves in a thrilling, side by side battle with
Cobb on the low side and Flowers on the high side. Flowers finally made a
high pass exiting Turn 4 of the 10th circuit to grab the lead.
Haudenshild was running a close third, but he brushed the wall exiting
Turn 4 as Flowers and Cobb pulled away. Haudenshild ended up
surrendering third to Darek Alford with Matt Harlow soon moving into
fourth. That was the battle as Scott Flowers pulled away a little bit to
win ahead of Cobb, Alford, Harlow, Haudenshild, Hammond, James Flowers,
Robert Day, Denny Burtenhouse and Rick Lukens.
Haudenshild
set the fast time of 15.412, beating the 16.020 of James Flowers.
Haudenshild and Burtenhouse picked up the eight lap heat race wins.
Multi
time Southern Oregon Dwarf Car Association champion Josh King got the
win in the 25 lap Dwarf Car Main Event. King bolted into the lead at the
start ahead of Northwest Dwarf Car competitor Shane Youngren, but
Youngren surrendered second to Camden Robustelli's outside pass on
backstretch on Lap 4. Youngren came back strong to regain second two
laps later, but the intense battle found Robustelli moving back into the
position in traffic on Lap 10. A yellow flag waved on Lap 12 as Chris
Kress had just taken third from Youngren. King led Kress and Youngren on
the restart. King drove a flawless race and went on to victory ahead of
Kress. Robustelli got back around Youngren for third as Youngren
settled for fourth, followed by Cardoza, Cody Peters, Fred Hay, Dave
Brune, Brett James and RC Levin.
Robustelli was
the quickest of 22 drivers in qualifying with a lap of 15.024, beating
the 15.109 of King and the 15.160 of James. The eight lap heat race wins
went to Robustelli, Kress and Youngren. King won the four lap A Dash
with Kress picking up the victory in the four lap B Dash. James won the
10 lap B Main ahead of Trevor Davis, Brune, Cadyn Smith and Paul
Haselow.
Racing continues this Friday night
with the IMCA Sport Modifieds back in action along with the Southern
Oregon Dwarf Cars, Mini Stocks and the Sport Compacts. For further
information, go to www.siskiyougoldenspeedway.com.

Sanders skipped out on the race in Watsonville as his car was driven by
brother Rickey Sanders. Justin Sanders was driving the Paul Silva owned
entry.
Justin Sanders jumped into the lead at
the start ahead of Shane Golobic and Dominic Scelzi. Gollobic put the
moves on Sanders to grab the lead on the seventh lap. However, Sanders
stayed in the hunt until finally overtaking Golobic for good on the 26th
circuit. Scelzi got by Golobic for second on Lap 29, and Sanders won
ahead of Scelzi, Golobic, Corey Day, Joel Myers Jr, DJ Netto, Tanner
Holmes, Mitchell Faccinto, Caeden Steele and Joey Ancona.
Steele
bested a field of 24 competitors with the fast time of 14.710, barely
