Busby Wins Opening Night Of Summer Nationals At Antioch Speedway
Point leader Scott Busby grabbed the $1500 first prize for his victory in the 20 lap IMCA Modified Main Event Friday night at Antioch Speedway. The big event was the opener of the two night Summer Nationals, which boasted a bigger payoff than normal and attracted top name drivers from several other race tracks. The race looked like it would belong to Bobby Hogge IV, who led from the start until spinning in Turn 2 on a lap ten restart. That handed the lead to Busby.
Busby quickly lost that lead to Ryan McDaniel on the restart, but he shadowed McDaniel’s every move in second, waiting for the opportunity. That moment came on a lap 17 restart when McDaniel had picked the outside on the leader’s option. Busby got a good run on the inside and led the pack through Turns 1 and 2. Busby kept his cool from there and collected the nice payday for his win. Ryan McDaniel settled for second ahead of his father, Randy McDaniel.
Fred Ryland won a wild IMCA Sport Mod 20 lap Main Event. Keith Brown Jr. led the first half of the race before Ryland made a contact pass in Turns 1 and 2 to take the lead. The two had an eventful, botched restart that saw track officials swap the first row with the second on the lap 14 restart. Brian Cooper had the lead and spun a lap later. A few laps later, Darren Thomas also spun from the lead. Suddenly, Ryland had the lead and brought it home to victory ahead of Brown and Jeremy Hoff.
David Teves won an eventful 20 lap Dwarf Car Main Event to stretch his point lead. Pat Urdahl led until losing the lead to Adam Teves on a lap 13 restart. David soon moved into second and chased his son Adam down. D. Teves made an outside pass in Turn 4 coming to the white flag and grabbed the lead. D. Teves took the checkered flag in first with A. Teves settling for second. Kevin Miraglio just beat Urdahl back to the line for third.
Larry Damitz led all 20 laps for the Limited Late Model feature win. Damitz got into a sideways Mark Garner in Turn 4 on the opening lap, resulting in Garner doing an easy roll. Garner was not injured, but he was out of the event. Damitz cruised to victory, and Jim Freethy won a mid race duel with Mike Hynes to grab the second spot. Hynes settled for third at the checkered flag.
Chico visitor Todd Cooper made his first appearance ever and led all 20 laps to win the Hobby Stock Main Event. Chris Long won a three car duel through lapped traffic midway through the race to secure the second spot, but he was unable to make a challenge on Cooper for the lead on a late race restart. Point leader Kimo Oreta came from tenth starting to finish third in the race that was slowed by just one caution flag.
Racing continues Saturday night (June 27) with the final round of the Summer Nationals event. IMCA Modifieds and IMCA Sport Modifieds will be joined by the DIRTcar Late Models. NASCAR star Kenny Wallace will be competing in a Late Model and an IMCA Modified.
