Jones A Double Winner In Antioch Speedway Season Opener

Antioch, CA...March 13...Shawn Jones likes winning so much he did it twice Saturday night at Antioch Speedway as the curtain came up on the 60th Anniversary Season on the quarter-mile clay oval. Jones, who is a past Hunt Wingless Sprint Series champion, won the 30 lap Wingless Spec Sprint Main Event. He also claimed the victory in the 20 lap Delta Dwarf Car feature race.

In the Spec Sprint Main Event, Jones lined up in the fourth row inside as past Petaluma champion Ryon Siverling and Boy Moniz shared the front row. Moniz won the Main Event at Marysville recently and made his first visit to Antioch Speedway at the season finale four years ago with a surprising victory. As Moniz and Siverling battled out front, Jones methodically worked his way forward. He would overtake the duo for the lead and bring it home to victory. Siverling enjoyed his best ever Antioch finish in second, followed by Boy Moniz, Braidon Moniz, Cameron Martin, two-time Antioch champion Bob Newberry, Roy Fisher, Tony Bernard, Jacob Williams and Sheldon Moniz. The 16 competitors ran three eight lap heat races with victories earned by Jimmy Christian, Marcus Smith and Siverling.

Earlier in the evening, Jones won the Delta Dwarf Car Main Event. This race turned out to be a podium sweep for the rival NorCal Dwarf Car competitors. Recent Marysville winners Michael "Spanky" Grenert and Ryan Winter battled Jones, but in the end Jones would triumph. Winter settled for second ahead of Grenert. 2016 Antioch champion Kevin Miraglio finished fourth, followed by Dennis Gilcrease, Jack Haverty, Devan Kammermann, David Michael Rosa, Travis Day and Sean Catucci. They had 20 competitors for this event, and the eight lap heat race wins were earned by Jones, Grenert and Miraglio.

In Hobby Stock competition, Larry McKinzie Jr picked up his first career 30 lap Main Event win. McKinzie shared the front row with fellow heat race winner Kenneth Robles. Unfortunately for Robles, his race came to an early end as he was scored 14th. While McKinzie was able to pick up his first win, Jeff Bentancourt enjoyed one of his better finishes in second, followed by George Silva, Anthony Vigna, James Graessle, Logan Fernandez, Gene Haney, Bryan Lloyd, Michaela Taylor and Maddie Motts. There were 26 competitors on hand, and reiging champion James Thomson and Jeff Bentancourt joined McKinzie and Robles as eight lap heat race winners. Adam Kujala and Gene Haney shared the front row of the 14 lap B Main and finished 1-2. Gavin Griffiths finished third ahead of Jake Bentancourt and Misty Welborn.

The IMCA Sport Modifieds were added to the program during the week for a non-track point earning event. Past Antioch and two-time reigning Merced champion Fred Ryland prevailed in the 25 lap Main Event. Recent Stockton winner Andrew Pearce shared the front row with Ryland and provided him with some stiff competition. Ultimately, Ryland prevailed ahead of Pearce and past Limited Late Model champion Mark Garner. Tommy Clymens Jr enjoyed one of his better finishes in fourth, followed by Kevin Brown, three-time reigning champion Trevor Clymens, Scott Foster, rookie Breanna Troen, Dwayne Short and Tyler Browne. The eight lap heat races were won by Pearce, Tommy Clymens Jr and Browne as 16 drivers came to compete in the hastily scheduled event.

2013 Super Stock champion Jim Freethy won their 15 lap Main Event and the eight lap heat race. His feature win came ahead of Ryan Cherezian. Both Brian Pearce and Devin Vaughn competed in IMCA Stock Cars.

Racing returns this Saturday night with IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sport Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars and Delta Dwarf Cars. The track has also announced that they will be able to have a limited number of spectator attendance starting on April 3rd. Adams Bests USAC/CRA Sprint Car field At Kern Raceway

Bakersfield, CA...March 13...Max Adams won the 30 lap AMSOIL USAC/CRA Sprint Car Main Event at the Kern County Raceway Dirt Track Saturday night. Adams won the Sprint Car championship at Gas City Speedway last season while most of the Wingless 410 Sprint Car racing activity in California was shut down. His win was worth $3,000 aboard Keith Ford's Blue Blood Racing Oil/Sun Valley Ag Transport Triple X Sprinter.

Charles Davis Jr and Troy Rutherford shared the front row and led the 22 car field to the green flag. However, second row inside starter Brody Roa moved past Davis to lead the opening lap. Rutherford made his way past Davis for second on the second lap as Adams was challenging Davis for third. Contact between Damion Gardner and Cody Williams on the backstretch saw Williams spin for a Lap 6 yellow flag. Roa continued to lead the restart with Davis moving past Rutherford in Turn 4 to regain second. Austin Williams made an inside pass in Turn 4 of the eighth lap to take second from Davis, and Davis surrendered third to Adams in Turn 1 two laps later. A Lap 10 yellow flag flew for Jake Hodges in Turn 4. Roa continued to lead Austin Williams and Adams on the restart, but an outside pass on the frontstretch of the 12th lap gained Adams second. Roa quickly built a half-straightaway lead over Adams, but slower traffic enabled Adams to close the gap by the 15th lap. Adams was giving Roa plenty of pressure before making a low pass in Turn 3 of the 22nd lap to gain the lead. Matt McCarthy spun on the backstretch to bring out the final yellow flag on Lap 24. Moments before that, Gardner managed to wrestle third away from Williams. Adams led Roa and Gardner on the restart. Despite some pressure from Roa, Adams kept his cool and scored the well-earned victory. Gardner settled for third, followed by Austin Williams, Matt Mitchell, Chris Gansen, Danny Faria Jr, Tommy Malcolm, Davis and AJ Bender. Friday night winner Ryan Timmons flipped on the back straightaway moments after the checkered flag flew.

Gardner bested a 32 car field in Woodland Auto Display qualifying with a lap of 14.571, beating the 14.780 of Austin Williams. Mitchell, Davey Ray, Austin Liggett and Davis won their respective 10 lap Factory Wraps heat races. Hodges won the 12 lap B Main ahead of Timmons, Tanner Boul, Joel Rayborne and Austin Grabowski.

Ryan Rocha won the 25 lap Van De Pol IMCA Western RaceSaver Sprint Car Main Event. From his front row start, Rocha led the opening lap before Orry Stevens spun in Turn 2 for a yellow flag. Rocha continued to lead Richard Weddle and Friday night winner Ryan DeLisle on the restart. A high pass in Turn 2 on the third lap gained DeLisle second with Lane Taylor slipping past Weddle for third a lap later. Brandon Emmett stalled with a right rear flat tire for a Lap 6 yellow flag. As Rocha continued to lead the restart, a low pass in Turn 2 gained Taylor second from DeLisle. Stevens spun in Turn 2 and Kevin Barnes spun and Turn 4 for a Lap 10 yellow flag. Rocha continued to lead the restart with DeLisle making an inside pass on the backstretch to regain second from Taylor. Over the next dozen laps, Delisle made a strong effort on the outside to begin to pressure Rocha for the lead. Rocha took the white flag in first as they were working heavy traffic. Just as DeLisle was making a pass for the lead on the backstretch, a yellow flag waved as Taylor spun from third. This put Rocha back into the lead for the two lap shootout to the finish. Rocha led the final two laps to win with DeLisle settling for second ahead of Weddle, Taylor, Barnes, Phil Heynen, Brandon Stidham, Tyler Gray, Stevens and Emmett. Rocha set the fast time of 10 competitors at 14.215, beating the 14.297 of Weddle. The eight lap heat race wins went to DeLisle and Heynen.

Timmons Scores Surprising First Career CRA/USAC Sprint Car
 Win At Kern Raceway

Bakersfield, CA...March 12...Ryan Timmons scored a surprising victory in the 30 lap AMSOIL USAC/CRA 410 Sprint Car Main Event Friday night at the Kern County Raceway Dirt Track. The win came as a bit of a surprise to Timmons, who was piloting the family's Timmons Auto and Truck Repair/Evergood Fine Goods sponsored Sprinter and he was running with a 360 ci motor. The win paid $3,000 to the jubilant Timmons.

Timmons might have been lucky that his race went beyond the first lap after past series champion Damion Gardner made contact with him and flipped hard into the Turn 1 wall. Fortunately, Gardner was okay. Brody Roa led the opening lap ahead of Matt Mitchell and Austin Williams. The race had a difficult time getting going as Roa led one more lap before a yellow for a stalled car on the backstretch. Another lap went into the books before a yellow flag flew for Tommy Malcolm on the backstretch. Roa led the Lap 4 restart ahead of Mitchell and Williams. By the 10th circuit, Roa held a straightaway advantage over Mitchell and seemed well in control of the event. Williams moved past Mitchell on the 12th lap, and a Lap 13 yellow flag flew for Troy Rutherford in Turn 4. Roa continued to lead Williams on the restart as Danny Faria Jr had climbed from 14th to third. Jeff Dyer brought out a Lap 17 yellow flag, but Roa continued to lead Williams and Faria on the restart. Unfortunately for Faria, his run in third came to an end in Turn 3 for a Lap 22 yellow flag. On the restart, Timmons pressured Roa hard and beat him to the line for the lead. Roa was back in front a lap later before a final yellow flag waved for a disappointed Roa, who had run out of gas. Timmons found himself in the lead again and led Davey Ray to the green flag. Ray began working the outside in the final laps to try to find a way past Timmons. However, Timmons was cool under pressure and scored the satisfying win ahead of Ray, Chris Gansen, Austin Williams, Charles Davis Jr, Verne Sweeney, Brody Roa, Rick Hendrix, Austin Grabowski and Nathan Schank. The "In Memory of Jim and Chet Gardner Hard Charger Award" went to Ray, who started back in 15th before working his way to the second place finish.

The 30 car field got an opportunity to qualify on the smoothly prepared dirt oval, and the 14.106 of Gardner was the new track record as this was the first visit for the group. Williams was second quick at 14.116. They ran four 10 lap heat races. Wins in those races went to Gardner, Rutherford, Austin Liggett and Max Adams. Sweeney led from start to finish to win the 12 lap B Main ahead of Timmons, Hendrix, Grabowski and Tyler Hatzikian.

Ryan DeLisle scored his first career IMCA Van De Pol Western RaceSaver 305 Sprint Car Main Event win. This was the first ever sanctioned event for this group at Kern Raceway. Most of the race appeared to be in the control of Ryan Rocha. Rocha set the pace from the start ahead of DeLisle and Phil Heynen. The first yellow flag of the race flew for Kevin Barnes on Lap 11. Rocha continued to lead DeLisle and Heynen on the restart. USAC Midget star Brody Fuson slipped past Heynen for third on the backstretch on lap 14. Rocha was working traffic by then, and he went just a bit too high entering Turn 1 on Lap 19 and hit the wall. This ended the race for Rocha and put DeLisle into the lead. Fuson saw his race and at the same time as Rocha in Turn 4. DeLisle led Lane Taylor on the restart, and that's the way they finished with DeLisle getting his first win ahead of Taylor, Richard Weddle, Heynen, Brandon Emmett, Orry Stevens, Tyler Gray, Rocha, Fuson and Barnes. The eight lap heat race wins went to Rocha and Taylor.

Hickle Scores Thrilling King of Thunder Sprint Car Victory
At Keller Auto Speedway

Hanford, CA...March 12...JJ Hickle scored the win in the 30 lap King of Thunder Winged 360 Sprint Car Main Event Friday night at Keller Auto Speedway. This was to be an ASCS National Sprint Car show, but the organization canceled their West Coast swing due to the covid-19 restrictions on fan attendance. Promoter Peter Murphy hastily scheduled a two-race weekend for the Sprint Cars and other classes. Hickle's win came aboard the Worden Racing Sprint Car.

Hickle put himself in a good position to win as he held off impressive young charger Joel Myers Jr to win the six lap Trophy Dash. With a pole position start for the feature race, Hickle charged into the lead at the start ahead of Myers and Shane Golobic. By the seventh lap, Hickle found himself in traffic with Myers and Golobic in close pursuit. A low pass and Turn 2 of the 12th lap gained Myers the lead with Golobic following closely into second. The yellow flag flew on Lap 17 for Corey Day in Turn 4. Myers led Golobic and Hickle on the restart. By the 24th lap, Myers was working heavy traffic as Golobic stalked him. Hickle got a good run on the outside of the lead duo exiting Turn 4 of the 28th lap and passed Myers at the line for the lead. Golobic made Turn 4 pass on Myers on lap 29, but Myers moved back around him as they entered Turn 1 on the final lap. However, nobody was stopping Hickle from scoring the well-earned victory. Myers settled for a career best second, followed by Golobic, Daryn Pittman, Austin McCarl, DJ Netto, Rico Abreu, Blake Carrick, Tucker Worth and Keith Day Jr.

The King of Thunder Sprint Cars had a stellar turnout of 54 competitors. They qualified in their five different heat race groups. Representing the fifth group, Golobic had the quickest lap of 13.324, beating the 13.491 of Kaleb Montgomery in the fourth group. They ran five seven lap heat races with wins going to Worth, Devon Borden, Pittman, Myers and McCarl. The first 12 lap B Main went non-stop with Corey Day getting the win ahead of Justyn Cox, Stephen Kent, Bud Kaeding and Mitchel Moles. The second B Main had one yellow flag slow down, but Tanner Carrick led all the way to win ahead of Jake Andreotti, Chase Johnson, Robbie Price and Jason Solwold.

Jeff Streeter won the 20 lap IMCA Stock Car Main Event. A Cody Johnson scratch left just 10 starters for the race, and Renn Bane led the opening lap. Nick Johnson made a backstretch pass on Bane to grab the lead a lap later, and Streeter settled into third on Lap 3. Larry Thompson stalled in Turn 4 to bring out a Lap 4 yellow flag. Johnson continued to lead Bane and Streeter on the restart, but Streeter got past Bane for second on Lap 6. Nick Johnson and Streeter pulled away from the pack as Garrett Corn went underneath Bane to grab third in Turn 2 of the seventh lap. An outside pass on the frontstretch on Lap 9 put Streeter into the lead, and Brandon Whitten brought out a yellow flag moments later. Streeter continued to lead Nick Johnson on the restart. However, there wasn't too much of a battle for first as Streeter pulled away for the impressive win. Nick Johnson was a solid second. Brock Hamilton made a low pass in Turn 2 on the 19th lap to steal third from Corn, who settled for fourth ahead of Thompson, Troy Patee, Michael Shearer, Bane, Mark Morton and Whitten. Nick Johnson and Streeter won their respective seven lap heat races.

Vieira Captures $5,000 Prize In Pro Late Model Opener
At Madera Speedway

Madera, CA...March 13...Carlos Vieira won the 100 lap Nut Up Pro Late Model Main Event Saturday night at Madera Speedway. This was the season opener for the track and the MavTV Series. The win paid Vieira $5,000 and came after an exciting late race battle with Matt Erickson.

Despite the fact that another big money race in Stockton pulled several top competitors from the field, there were still 24 drivers on hand to do battle on Madera's 1/3 mile paved oval. Vieira set the fast time standard of 15.030, beating the 15.082 of Seth Wise and the 15.115 of Austin Herzog. With his front row start, Vieira charged into the early lead ahead of Bubba Nascimento and Jason Aguirre. A Turn 4 tangle involving Wise, Tyler Herzog and Cody Kiemele brought out the first yellow flag on Lap 10 with both Wise and Kiemele out of the race. Vieira continued to lead Nascimento and Aguirre on the restart. Aguirre slipped past Nascimento for second on Lap 16 and made an inside pass on the backstretch on Lap 19 to take the lead from Vieira. Olivia Manke spun in Turn 4 for a Lap 21 yellow flag. Aguirre led Nascimento and Austin Herzog on the restart. Pete Soto spun in Turn 2 for a Lap 30 yellow flag, and Aguirre continued to lead Nascimento and Austin Herzog on the ensuing restart. Austin Herzog moved by Nascimento for second on Lap 43. A yellow flag waved for both Colby Potts and Soto on Lap 44. This was used as a halfway break with Aguirre leading Austin Herzog, Nascimento, Vieira and Matt Erickson.

Aguirre led Austin Herzog and Vieira on the restart, and the lead trio battled fiercely for several laps. Aguirre was running strong on the high side with both Herzog and Vieira running the bottom. Vieira finally got around Austin Herzog for second on Lap 73 and continued to pressure Aguirre. Brian Collins and Manke tangled for a Lap 77 yellow flag. Vieira got a strong run on the outside on the restart and took the lead from Aguirre. Working the outside, Matt Erickson went past Aguirre in Turn 4 on Lap 80 to claim second. Herzog was running third when a lap 89 yellow flag waved for a Soto spin in Turn 3. Vieira led Matt Erickson and Austin Herzog on the next restart. Manke spun for the final yellow flag on lap 95. On the restart, Matt Erickson got a strong run on the outside and passed Vieira on the backstretch to take the lead. However, Vieira went by Erickson on the inside in Turn 2 on Lap 97 to reclaim the lead. Austin Herzog spun in Turn 3 on Lap 99, and Tyler Herzog got around Matt Erickson for second. Vieira won ahead of Tyler Herzog, Matt Erickson, Aguirre, Kabe McClenny, Glenn Cook, Potts, Jason Gilbert, Kyle Keller and Howard Holden.

Kale McClenny won the 70 lap Jr Late Model Main Event. With some of the drivers graduating to the Pro Late Models and several newcomers joining the class, this race was just a bit rough and tumble. There were a total of 13 yellow flags. Ethan Nascimento set the early pace ahead of Jacob Smith and championship hopeful Kercie Jung. The complexion of the race was seriously affected on Lap 6 when contact from Smith sent Nascimento spinning. Jung made contact with Nascimento, and there were several other cars involved in the red flag incident. Nascimento made a lengthy pit stop, but he was able to return for the restart. The race was over for Jung. Cody Kiemele led Brody Armtrout and Kasey Kleyn on the restart. Kylie Ith spun in Turn 2 for Lap 9 yellow flag. Kiemele continued to lead the restart, and a low pass in Turn 4 on Lap 11 gained Kleyn second from Armtrout. Barrett Polhemus quickly settled into third. Polhemus gained second on a Lap 17 restart with McClenny moving into third. Kenna Mitchell spun in Turn 3 for a Lap 31 yellow flag. McClenny took the lead from Kiemele on the restart, but a yellow flag waved once again. Because there were two lengthy red flag periods, track officials elected to call this the halfway break with McClenny leading Kiemele and Kleyn at that point.

McClenny led Kiemele and Kleyn when racing resumed. Tyler Berry hit the front wall for a Lap 35 yellow flag, and Smith was black flagged from the race for his part in the incident. McClenny continued to lead Kiemele and Kleyn through four restarts in the next half dozen laps. Brody Moore gained third on Lap 43. Polhemus slipped past Moore for third on lap 56, and a Lap 65 yellow flag flew for a Holly Clark spin. McClenny continued to do a great job on the restarts as he led Pohemus with Nascimento making a charge back into third. Not even a Lap 68 yellow flag could stop McClenny as he won ahead of Polhemus. Moore moved back around Nascimento on Lap 69 and would finish there as Nascimento settled for fourth. Armtrout was fifth, followed by Clark, Kleyn, Jeffrey Erickson, Mitchell and Ith. Jung was the quickest qualifier of 16 with a lap of 15.152, beating the 15.263 of Nascimento and Smith.

Logan Chambers won his first ever 30 lap Bandolero/Mini Cup Main Event. This was his first win in the class. One of the top drivers from last season, Caden Cordova set the early pace ahead of Chambers. Newcomer Kellen Keller spun on the backstretch but gathered it up without need for yellow flag. Contact between Chambers and Cordova entering Turn 1 on Lap 12 sent Cordova spinning, but he kept going without a yellow as Chambers led the Mini Cup of Sam Wedehase. Despite being at a bit of a disadvantage in a Mini Cup, Wedehase actually had the fastest lap of the race as he was closing in on Chambers. A yellow flag waved on Lap 19 after Cordova spun in Turn 4. During the caution period, a penalty was assessed on Chambers for the earlier Turn 1 incident with Cordova. Konner Karsten spun in Turn 2 on Lap 21, and Keller spun in Turn 4 on Lap 23 for a yellow flag. Cordova lead Chambers on the restart as Karsten was back in third. Wedehase spun in Turn 4 for a lap 24 yellow with Cordova spinning in the same turn moments later. Cordova led the Lap 25 restart over Chambers. Wedehase spun once again in Turn 4 on Lap 26. Chambers would get the lead and held off Karsten for the win. Cordova settled for third ahead of the Mini Cup cars of Keller and Wedehase. Joey Kennealy was a Main Event scratch. Chambers set the fast time of the Bandoleros at 18.182, while Wedehase set the Mini Cup fast time at 18.517. Chambers outran Cordova to win the eight lap heat race.

Racing resumes with a regular Madera Club event this Saturday night. The Madera Late Models will be there along with the Hobby Stocks, MST/Toyota Sedans, the Challenge Cup Series, a Junior Late Model exhibition race, the Big Truck Arm Cars and the Southwest Tour Truck Series. Promoter Kenny Shepherd just announced that thanks to great sponsorship from companies such as Nut Up Industries, Mission Foods and 5150 Energy Drink, the track will continue to offer a free live stream on their YouTube page even when fans are expected to be able to return in April. For further information, go to www.racemadera.com

Forsberg Back In Winner's Circle At Marysville Raceway

Marysville, CA...March 13...Andy Forsberg won the 25 lap Winged 360 Sprint Car Main Event Saturday night at Marysville Raceway. Forsberg is the reigning track champion, and this was the championship season opener.

Past Petaluma Speedway champion Jake Haulot had a front row start and charged into the early lead ahead of Billy Wallace and multi time Chico champion Sean Becker. RJ Baker and Bobby Butler tangled in Turn 2 for a Lap 2 yellow flag. Haulot continued to lead Becker and Forsberg on the restart. Forsberg put the moves on Becker for second on Lap 4, and a Lap 9 yellow flag waved for Steven Ingraham. Only one lap would get recorded before another yellow flag waved for Koa Crane. Haulot led Forsberg and Becker on the restart. Forsberg was giving Haulot plenty of pressure before making what proved to be his winning pass on Lap 18. Becker also got around Haulot for second. Forsberg went on to win ahead of Becker, Haulot, 15-year-old rookie Dylan Bloomfield, Wallace, Nick Larsen, Burt Foland Jr, Josh Wiesz, Kevin Lovell and Pat Harvey Jr.  Becker had the fast time on the quarter-mile clay oval of 13.038, beating the 13.106 of Forsberg. The eight lap heat race wins went to Wiesz and Forsberg.

Orland Raceway star Keith Ross won the 20 lap Hobby Stock Main Event. Ross had a front row start and charged into the early lead ahead of past Marysville IMCA Sport Modified champion Howard Law and David Cooper. Tim McHenry, Joe Gillock and Cody Rickard tangled in Turn 1 for a yellow flag after just one lap with both Rickard and McHenry out of the action. Ross continued to lead Law and Cooper on the restart. Despite back-to-back yellows on Lap 6 and 7, Ross continued to lead Law. Zach Lindgren settled into third on the Lap 8 restart, and a Lap 10 yellow flag waved for Gillock and Toby Merrifield in Turn 2, ending the race for Gillock. Ross continued to lead Law and Lindgren on the restart, and Ross began to build a big lead. That lead was erased when B Main winner Shannon Collins suffered mechanical issues and brought out a Lap 15 yellow flag. Nobody was going to stop Ross as he led the restart and the remaining laps to win impressively ahead of Law, Lindgren, Cooper, reigning champion Jesse Van Roekel, Maurice Merrill, Devin Koranda, Hollis Thackery, Jason Clayton and Chris Van Roekel.

There were 27 cars in action with the eight lap heat race wins going to Ross, Law, Lindgren and Kyle Cheney. Collins won the 12 lap B Main. Merrill led a lap before being passed by Jason Clayton, who led until the eighth circuit. At that point, Collins went racing by and scored the win ahead of Merrill, Merrifield, Trevor DeArmond and Mario Davis.

Brett Youngman won the 20 lap Crate Sprint Main Event. Youngman is the defending division champion, and his win came aboard the James Smith III owned Sprinter. After winning their respective eight lap heat races, Jason Ballantine and Mike Ballantine shared the front row for the feature race, and Jason charged into the early lead. Youngman and David Sims shuffled Mike Ballantine back to fourth on the second lap. The only yellow flag of the race flew on the third lap for a Turn 2 tangle involving Mike Ballantine and Dusty Barton. Jason Ballantine continued to lead Youngman and Sims on the restart. With about five laps remaining, Youngman was pressuring Jason Ballantine for the lead until making what proved to be his winning pass on Lap 19. Youngman went on to victory with Jason Ballantine settling for second ahead of Sims, Cameron Haney Jr, Mike Ballantine, Chad Thompson, Wyatt Van Lare, Doug Froehlich, Barton and Spencer Slocum.

Dan Brown Jr won the 20 lap Limited Late Model Main Event. The race ran without a yellow flag. Rod Oliver raced into the early lead ahead of Brown and Jay Norton. It was a close battle up front until Brown moved by Oliver to grab the lead on Lap 12. Brown stretched his lead to about a straightaway over Oliver in victory. Norton settled for third, followed by Jimmy Ford, Michael Hynes and multi time Street Stock champion George Magenheimer. Oliver won the eight lap heat race.

Racing resumes next Saturday night with the first appearance of the year for the Pepsi IMCA Sport Modifieds. The Winged 360 Sprint Cars and Hobby Stocks make up the balance of what should be an exciting program. For further information, go to www.marysvilleraceway.com.

Scelzi Wins Spanky Matthews Memorial
At Keller Auto Speedway

Hanford, CA...March 13...Dominic Scelzi won the 30 lap King of Thunder Winged 360 Sprint Car Main Event Saturday night at Keller Auto Speedway. This was the Spanky Matthews Memorial race, and It produced a stellar field of 56 Sprint Cars.

Following his impressive drive to victory in the eight lap Trophy Dash, Joel Myers Jr had the pole for the feature race and charged into the early lead ahead of Austin McCarl and Friday night winner JJ Hickle. Max Mittry spun on the backstretch for a Lap 2 yellow flag. Myers continued to lead McCarl and Mitchell Faccinto on the restart. An inside pass on the frontstretch on Lap 10 put McCarl into the lead. Myers spun from second in Turn 2 for a Lap 13 yellow flag. Scelzi raced into second behind McCarl on the restart as Daryn Pittman was third. A low pass in Turn 3 of the 23rd lap gained Scelzi the lead. In the final seven laps, Scelzi kept his cool and scored the victory. McCarl settled for second, followed by Pittman, Shane Golobic, Hickle, Bud Kaeding, Rico Abreu, DJ Netto, Blake Carrick and Faccinto.

The 56 competitors were spread through five seven lap heat races with wins going to Faccinto, Abreu, Scelzi, Mittry and Grant Duinkerken. Only two drivers would make the cut from each of the two 12 lap B Mains. Craig Stidham won the first one ahead of Jodie Robinson and Brock Lemley. Zane Blanchard won the second B Main ahead of Tucker Worth and Colby Thornhill.

Grass Valley Sprint Car veteran Richard Brace Jr picked up from where he left off last year with the 20 lap Tri State Pro Stock Challenge Series Main Event win. It wasn't as easy as it might sound as Brace led just one lap before Perris Auto Speedway star Billy Griffin drove by on the inside in Turn 2 to grab the lead. Susanville Promoter Jeff Olschowka settled into second on Lap 3 and made an inside pass in Turn 2 on Lap 4 to take the lead from Griffin. Olschowka was running strong, but he began smoking heavily on Lap 9 and headed into the infield off the frontstretch with Brace now leading Griffin. Donny Richardson spun in Turn 2 for the only slow down on Lap 10. Brace continued to lead Griffin as Enduro specialist Rich Denman made an inside pass in Turn 4 to take third from Devin Crockett. Griffin was only able to keep it close for a few laps, but Brace would pull away for the victory. Denman made a late pass on Griffin to finish second as Griffin settled for third, followed by Crockett, Chris Smith, Ryan Smith, Jesse Gonzalez, Brady Bell, Phil Marino and Richardson. The seven lap heat race wins went to Crockett and Olschowka.

Greg Baronian won the 20 lap West Coast Sport Compact Main Event. Baronian is a past champion with the group. Sponsorship from Little Caesars, Lemoore Tire & Auto, S-15 Tee's, TJPerformance, HandleitGrips, ASP Tuning Dynamics and House of JuJu increased the group's Main Event purse and enabled cash prizes for the heat race winners.

Baronian chased Steve Porter for just one lap before a three-wide pass in Turn 2 put Baronian into the lead. Reigning series champion Clinton Massey settled into second. Past champion Dan Myrick made a backstretch pass on Porter for third, only to surrender the position to a low pass in Turn 4 on Lap 4 by Shawn DePriest. Following his impressive two-win weekend at Kern Raceway, David Wolford Jr settled into fourth and took third from DePriest on Lap 8. Wolford quickly reeled in Massey and made a pass on the backstretch on Lap 11 to claim second. The battle between Wolford, Massey and DePriest for second went on for several laps as Baronian pulled away. Massey made a high pass in Turn 4 on Lap 13 to reclaim second, but an inside pass on the frontstretch on Lap 14 regained Wilford the position. Massey again went by on the inside in Turn 2 on Lap 15 to regain the runner-up spot, but Wolford made an inside pass on the backstretch on the final lap to regain second for good. However, nobody was stopping Baronian as he won impressively ahead of Wolford, Massey, DePriest, Myrick, Porter, Joe Robinson, Scott Glenn, Joe Rogers Jr and Gene Glover. The seven lap heat race wins went to Baronian, Rogers and Glover.

Racing returns to Hanford on April 10th with the King of Thunder Winged 410 Sprint Cars being joined by the USAC West Coast 360 Sprint Cars and USAC Western Midgets. For further information, go to www.racekingsspeedway.com.

Where: Placerville Speedway www.placervillespeedway.com

When: Saturday night

Who: Winged 360 Sprint Cars, Limited Late Models, Pure Stocks, Mini Trucks

What: Running a limited schedule last year, Ryan Robinson was the point leader in the Winged 360 Sprint Cars, Dan Jinkerson was the point leader in the Limited Late Models, Nick Baldwin was the Pure Stock point leader and Mike Miller led the Mini Truck points.

Why: There were six different winners in point competition in the Sprint Cars last year, but Robinson wasn't one of them. Jinkerson won two of his four starts in what was his rookie year in Limited Late Models. Baldwin had six Top 5 finishes in six starts but no wins in Pure Stock competition. Miller won three of four Mini Truck Main Events.

Where: The Stockton Dirt Track www.stocktondirttrack.com

When: Saturday night

Who: NARC King of the West Sprint Cars, NorCal Dwarf Cars

What: Only five races were run for the NARC Sprint Cars last year. Kyle Hirst was a double winner, while Spencer Bayston, Justin Sanders and Dominic Scelzi each won once. Reigning NorCal Champion Michael "Spanky" Grenert and Ryan Winter were the winners at their most recent Dwarf Car event in Chico. Winter also won the Stockton race in February.

Why: Before there was the legend of Brent Kaeding, there was multi-time NARC champion Leroy Van Conett. This race honors him. The Sprint Car Challenge Tour got this race at Stockton in 2019, and it was won by Shane Golobic. This is the fifth annual running of this race.

When: Saturday night

Who: IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sport Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars, Delta Dwarf Cars.

What: Troy Foulger was the IMCA Modified champion last season, while Trevor Clymens won the IMCA Sport Modified championship. Travis Day is the reigning Delta Dwarf Car champion. This is the first scheduled season for IMCA Stock Cars after Foulger was impressive in winning $2,000 for his pair of victories in last season's Bill Bowers Memorial West Coast Nationals race for the class.

Why: On New Year's day, Jim Pettit II won the IMCA Modified Main Event, and Todd Gomez was the IMCA Sport Modified winner. Bakersfield's Cody Johnson bested a six car field to win the first IMCA Stock Car point race. Shawn Jones won the Delta Dwarf Car Main Event last week. Though the Stock Cars might have low numbers, the other three classes should be solid.

Where: Marysville Raceway www.marysvilleraceway.com

When: Saturday night

What: Winged 360 Sprint Cars, Pepsi IMCA Sport Modifieds, Hobby Stocks

What: Andy Forsberg left little doubt who the reigning champion is in Sprint Car competition with his impressive win last week over Sean Becker. Jesse Van Roekel may be the reigning champion, but with 28 cars showing up for the Hobby Stocks last week, he knows repeating won't be easy. He was fifth last week as Keith Ross won. Reigning State champion Timothy Allerdings won a close championship battle in Sport Modifieds by just two points over two-time Mini Stock champion Jimmy Ford last year.

Why: There were five winners in seven Sport Modified races last year with past champion Phillip Shelby and Todd Cooper each scoring two wins. 2015 Sport Modified champion Howard Law had a second place finish in last week's Hobby Stock race, while father of Brian and Todd Cooper, David Cooper, was notable in finishing fourth. Don't look now, but after finishing second in Wingless Spec Sprint points in Antioch last year, 15 year old Dylan Bloomfield made his Winged 360 Sprint Car debut at Marysville last week in fourth.

The Editor's Viewpoint

If you're reading this column, it means I have once again decided to put up a blog post. It's a week to week deal for me, but I was in the mood to monitor a few different races. When I think I'm taking on too much on race night, I'll just drop a track and either go back to it the next day or not cover it for the week. When it gets even more stressful, I might not post at all. One of the things I'm looking to do to lessen the burden is to not do weekend preview articles as much as I have done in the past unless I feel it's necessary. Another thing I'm doing is trying to do is a shorter Viewpoint column to save on editing time, so I guess I'd better get to it.

I've said this before, but I'm a bit frustrated with the tracks that are using the MyLaps scoring unit. They've already paid for the system, and MyLaps provides a place to upload the data via their Speed Hive site. A few tracks have decided not to use the Race Monitor app live during a race, which is frustrating enough for me. Since I'm at the news desk on the laptop, I can actually watch the scoring live. It's about 90% effective, but sometimes it gets glitchy. In fact, that happened on Friday for Hanford. I prefer tracks use Race Monitor, but a few buck the trend and go to My Race Pass instead.

I'll spare you the rant that I have over my concerns of where My Race Pass is headed. Suffice it to say, I'm a bit concerned with that. What I don't like is not only are tracks going through them for live scoring, they now are not uploading the MyLaps finishes to Speed Hive at all. To get those numbers, you actually have to pay My Race Pass, when it would be there for everybody to see for free on Speed Hive. My frustration is that it's bad enough that some tracks aren't using Race Monitor when the program goes live. They aren't even uploading it to Speed Hive afterwards, where you can look deeper into the numbers and still get an understanding on how each race went.

It boils down to this. If I'm going to offer a free service when it comes to covering racing programs, I refuse to pay to do it. I'm already volunteering my time to cover the shows. I don't want to make a pay site that I'm sure wouldn't get enough support anyway. I'm trying to rely on ad revenue that hasn't come since I monetized this site, or people tipping me via The Tip Jar. Most weeks, I get nothing for what I do, and I put hours into this. I'm not going to pay to do my racing media for free. If it becomes too difficult for me to get enough information to write an adequate story, I'm done. There won't be a debate from week to week. I'll pull the plug. One of the things that has helped me is Merced Speedway General Manager Doug Lockwood did sponsor a year's subscription to Flo Racing, because I sure don't have the money in my budget to pay for that. What I do regarding racing has always been a labor of love, not money.

I'm not complaining. Just giving an update. Actually, it might make things easier for me if I did stop doing the weekly racing coverage and could focus more on the nostalgia stuff. I have so much editing to do and so many ideas. I mentioned on the audio show last week that we hope to cover the weekly action from Antioch, Merced, Watsonville and Petaluma, although Antioch is presenting a bit of a problem when it comes to information. Beyond that, we like that Marysville and Chico use Race Monitor and want to continue covering them. There are a few others we'd like to cover, but it all depends on how easy it is to do it. I'm not looking to stress myself out trying to get information this year.

At any rate, it looks like the state of Washington and the state of California are both offering a road map by which tracks will be able to get fans back up in the grandstands again. In both states, it sounds like we could be seeing some fans in the grandstands starting next week or by April. This is going to vary depending on what county you're in. It might be a couple hundred people, it might be a percentage of maximum occupancy or whatever. I made the projection that by June or July, most tracks should be able to have enough of an attendance to make it profitable to keep opening the gates, and I see the dams breaking fast.

Petaluma Speedway announced on Monday that they should be able to have 500 fans in April, but they retracted the post within a day. For some tracks, 500 fans is about what they get for an average weekly attendance. I'm not talking special events, but the weekly shows. This isn't the 1970s or early 1980s, and you're not getting 2000 fans in the stands at most of these venues. Tracks are going to take what they can get. I'm not sure how viable it will be to open the gates at Petaluma with 500 fans for the NARC/King of the West Series or the Sprint Car Challenge Tour, but we'll see what they are dealing with when those dates come.

This is just a general report on the road map to get fans in the stands. I really don't want to break down the entire struggle every week in this column as it I've grown tired of it. I see the bigger picture of what's going on in the world, and I would like to see the people of this country wake up to what's really going on. It alarms me how quick so many people are to accept restrictions over a situation that isn't as bad as the media hypes it up to be, but that's all I will say about that here.

There could always be bad news around the corner with this situation, and people should be ready to hear that. However, I think the path to getting fans back in the stands should open up even more in the days ahead until everybody who wants to be at the races will be there. Then, we just brace for the economic impact of what everybody's been through over the past year and how that affects the numbers.

In Oregon, everybody has been waiting for what Governor Kate Brown will announce regarding opening the race tracks with fans. In fact, the information we know just came across the desk within the last few hours. Sunset Speedway made a basic announcement on Wednesday night that they would be able to have fans with no further details. Cottage Grove Speedway made the announcement this morning that they will be able to have 25% capacity of fans in the grandstands and will thusly be adjusting their schedule. Promoter Heather Boyce had schedules out where the track would open with fans or without fans, and now obviously this good news means the schedule with fans will probably be the way forward. Keep an eye on their website.

Upon looking at the numbers, the state has decided to open things up where there can be at least some gatherings at sporting events outdoors. What they decided was to keep the color tiers of red, orange, yellow and green. If you're at red, you're only getting 50 people. That obviously doesn't work, but most counties are beyond that anyway. Orange level means 15% capacity. Currently, I noticed that Douglas County Speedway, Southern Oregon Speedway and Coos Bay Speedway all sit in Orange Tier. If you take a 2000 seating capacity at 15%, that means you get about 300 fans.

What I am unclear of is if 15% pertains to the entire facility or just the grandstands. I'm going to assume that tracks would have whatever they usually get in the pits with social distancing measures put in place, while also adhering to 15% allowance in the grandstands with whatever else that entails. The good news for Cottage Grove and Sunset Speedway is that they are in Yellow Tier. They get 25%. I don't know what the seating capacities are at either venue, but they should do okay at 25%. I do know Cottage Grove tends to be the most attended race track in Oregon, so they may still take a slight hit. Green Tier gives you 50% capacity. That's the Oregon news, hot off the press.

One bit of information everybody is waiting on is Willamette Speedway. While the people in Medford have been worried about the future of their venue, we've heard almost nothing about the house that Claire Arnold built. We've heard rumors of a new general manager coming in to run things or even that the track is finally being sold, but nothing official. We don't even know what things that were considered not up to code have been improved over the last year. The grandstands were an issue, and if that's not resolved, they can't have fan attendance. We expect we're going to hear lots of Oregon news in the days ahead.

By the end of this month, there will be an announcement regarding who the new promoter is at Southern Oregon Speedway. There have been several inquiries, although over half of the ones who requested the RFP's aren't likely to place a bid. We have Travis Hoppes, whom I believe is representing the new racing association in Medford. We have longtime racer Jon DeBenedetti. We also have David Hibbard. Though I'm not thrilled to say this, I believe the association may have the inside track. I'm getting a vibe that this is where it's going. I don't like association run tracks necessarily unless that's the only way to get the gates open. The business model is the thing, and association run tracks tend to just keep things afloat without really growing the program.

The building blocks were put into place already, and the 2000 shutdown killed the momentum. However, Southern Oregon Speedway has a Late Model division and a Sprint Car division now, where they didn't at the end of 2015. These are facts. I know some people believe the IMCA Modifieds are going to roar back with huge car counts. Forgive me for being skeptical about that, but we'll see. Overbooking that class won't be a smart move. I've had this feeling that the Sprint Car division might get kicked to the curb depending on who wins this deal, and I've heard that this could pretty much be the case if a certain entity gets it. I've heard that at least one schedule has already been created, though I doubt anybody will put anything out unless they win the bid.

Two legitimate promoters took a look at the track. Not surprisingly, Cottage Grove Speedway Promoter Heather Boyce was one of them. There were rumors that she was going to look, but I believe it's unlikely she will actually submit the bid as she has her hands full where she is. However, sources maintain she is seriously interested. The other was long time Antioch Speedway Promoter John Michael Soares. John has the ways and means, certainly the money, to do good things at this track. I don't know if he will ultimately put in a bid, but I suspect not. What I've heard is a bit of skepticism concerning the fairness of the process of awarding the next contract.

I'm not going to make any grand predictions other than to say that the track will open. One of the things in the contract is the possibility that they may only award the track for one year. This was something being trumpeted by the association people when they were proclaiming that the sky was falling and making a big scene on social media. They just wanted to get the track open for a year, and then maybe a promoter comes in next year. It's possible that the board may just give it to somebody for a year, so I wouldn't rule that out. The danger of an association being formed, in my opinion, is they can be a big pain in the ass to a promoter should the board go another way for 2022.

History is full of situations where the drivers thought they were getting screwed over by a promoter and decided to call a boycott. Though I wouldn't say the demise of Vallejo Speedway or the old Tully Road San Jose Speedway was entirely because of racers boycotting the evil promoter, you would have to give them an assist. These are just two examples. I understand everybody wanting a say, but sometimes everybody doesn't need a say. You don't need to chime in on every little decision made by a promoter. There's a fine line, and the good promoters take into advisory what the racers are saying before doing what they think is best. In any case, I suspect racing will return to Medford in May of 2021.

I neglected to mention that Cory Penfold of Moxie Media and Promotions took out an RFP. I know Cory has had it in his mind that he wants to promote a big track since the deal he was working on fell through to take over Willamette Speedway a couple of years ago. I suspect that he will submit a bid, but I think he might be a long shot to win it. What I would hope Cory would do is go on a fact-finding mission and look at some of the potential opportunities in Oregon. This could be a fairgrounds or what have you. Just a fact-finding mission that could produce an opportunity down the line. In the meantime, I'm sure he and his wife Sandra will be busy at their property promoting Marion Creek Speedway, which will have Flat Kart action this year.

Not that far away from them is the Albany MX track. The Leach family has made that place go like gangbusters. Though it's all about the bikes there, they've carved out an oval track or two on that property through the years. In fact, there is an oval track on the property that has run select Outlaw Kart programs. With the recent passing of Bob Leach, Sunset Speedway Promoter Jeremy Means will be promoting the Leach Memorial race on September 24th. He has gathered over a dozen sponsors for this race, which will pay $2,500 to win the 500 Open class and $500 to win the 250 Kart class, among other divisions and prize money. This one should be huge.

I admit that in the back of my mind, I wondered if the Siskiyou County Motorsports Association might take a look at Southern Oregon Speedway. I'm aware that they have equipment, or they did at last report. The more I thought about it, the more I lowered my expectations around them. First of all, they are in the process of building an RC Car facility in Montague, California. Secondly, they are waiting in the wings for the prize they really want, Siskiyou Golden Speedway. To that I say, don't rule them out.

I've been speculating about Oregon getting a 10th track, which is something I think needs to happen when racing gets back into full swing. I understand that Carl Tresser has sold Worden Speedway. I have no other information as far as who is getting the place and what they intend to do, but I hope the possibility of racing happening there again is at least explored. I have gotten some information on Baker City Speedway, which is for sale. Honestly, there are so many rules and regulations regarding that site that it's amazing they even opened for as long as they did. I would say racing happening there is doubtful. It is interesting that the site of the old Clatsop Speedway still sits with nothing built on it. I wonder if anybody's explored the possibilities there? With Eugene Speedway being a wetlands now, that's not going to happen.

Then there's the case of Oak Ridge Speedway at the Old Mill site. The city actually spent $10,000 in funds to build that up as a lawnmower track. They may have ran it for a couple of years before it closed. In its current configuration, it's probably nothing more than a lawn mower track or maybe Karts or something of that nature. However, there is a lot of property there and things could be rebuilt. I know a couple of years ago there were people looking at doing something, but I don't think the process went much further than that. I'm just intrigued by the possibility there. It's a little bit out of the way, but not so far out of the way that something couldn't be attempted.

It's like Kern Raceway. They needed a pavement track after the loss of Mesa Marin Raceway, so the site was built with that in mind. However, they also added a dirt track. It's just sort of gone along with a Friday night race every month or so, sharing many of the same divisions with neighboring Bakersfield Speedway. They've also done some unsanctioned Sprint Car shows. They've always said it's about the pavement track there and the dirt track is just something they're playing around with. However, I don't think they're playing around anymore.

The promoting team there has recently used the infield track for Flat Track Bikes. We've seen the Mini Dwarf Cars there in recent years, but the Flat Track Bike show was a big success. I'm sure we'll be seeing more of that at Kern. I'm also sure we'll see some more Sprint Car shows after the success of the AMSOIL USAC/CRA Sprint Car event last weekend. There were 30 cars for both nights and some very exciting racing. I know the Sprint Car group is excited about the possibility of more dates. I know the track has booked other Sprint Car shows this year. Kern Raceway Dirt Track isn't just going to be a secondary track for much longer. The numbers aren't spectacular on the pavement, so this is a business decision.

I recall the debate about IMCA sanctioning at Chowchilla Speedway when they were 16 miles down the road from Merced Speedway. The Merced promoter clearly did not want Chowchilla to be invited and held sway with the IMCA brass. I don't know if there might be a similar situation where Scott Schweitzer at Bakersfield Speedway is concerned, but I do know this. If you could throw in a Friday night show or two every month for the IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sport Modifieds and the other classes at Kern Raceway, the Bakersfield area would become a huge player in IMCA sanctioned racing.

Undoubtedly, the Kern Raceway promoter will be featuring various open wheel shows throughout the year, but they also have an interest in doing Modified racing. Seeing as how the Western RaceSaver IMCA Sprint Cars had their first ever sanctioned event there this last weekend, I'm sure this is at least being talked about. I believe Bakersfield Speedway is the longest continuously sanctioned IMCA track in the state of California, so if Schweitzer were to say no to the idea, the sanctioning body would probably listen to him. On the other hand, the idea of these two tracks uniting under the sanctioning body and running where they could share the cars would be huge. The other cool thing is that both are privately owned tracks.

If the Kern Raceway team had a mind to do it, they could have a big sanctioning body for their stock car program on their dirt track. If it gets this far and they aren't accepted by IMCA, there's always NASCAR. The pavement track is sanctioned by the most well known sanctioning body in the country. They are actually one of four paved tracks in California to be involved in the NASCAR weekly racing program, which includes State and Regional points. This is all speculation, but I know one thing. The program that we just witnessed at Kern Raceway last week shows that they are a player on the dirt now.

On the surface, I was a little bit disappointed when I saw the Asparagus Cup at Stockton 99 Speedway going head to head with a Nut Up Pro Late Model program at Madera Speedway. It felt like a little bit of stepping on toes, but maybe I'm being a bit harsh. The Southwest Tour was at Stockton. They have a long history, but this is their first foray into the Pro Late Model division that is similar to what they run in Madera. There was $7,000 on the line for the winner in Stockton, so that pulled drivers out of both the Madera and Irwindale fields. However, it looks like both Stockton and Madera ended up with 24 cars each, and I don't think either Pro Late Model show disappointed. Stockton will turn its attention to the dirt for the next couple of weeks, starting with the big NARC/King of the West race this week.

Madera Promoter Kenny Shepard has certainly worked hard to make a good presentation online, and he made a very surprising announcement after Saturday's successful MavTV Series opener. What he said was they will continue to offer the free live streams for people to enjoy even when the fans are allowed to come back to watch in person. I don't know how long that will last and I'm a bit surprised he's doing this when he could be affected financially. This is definitely about exposure and publicity for his stock car program, which I would put up next to any pavement effort for Late Models on the West Coast. Certainly, Nut Up Industries, 5150 Energy Drink and Mission Foods and their great sponsorship has helped Kenny do this.

We were speculating as we went to press last week regarding who would be promoting Lakeport Speedway, but the answer came right at the time we made the post. It's David Furia of Furia Motorsports. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't happy to hear this. I have a great deal of respect for David and the Furia family and wasn't happy when he was removed from Lakeport a couple of years ago by the NCRA Association. Lakeport has stagnated just a little bit, which is one of the reasons why I was an advocate for throwing dirt on the track and trying something new. Clearly, the fairgrounds wasn't hip to the idea when you look at the RFP. They just want the track open for so many dates, and they aren't looking for big changes with the track itself.

I think Ukiah Speedway has started to grow a little bit under Furia's guidance. They have a good Limited Modified and Bomber program, and I am enjoying the Jalopies on the infield track. Ukiah and Lakeport can now work together and run on alternating weeks or maybe share a weekend where one track runs on Friday and the other on Saturday. I think the fairgrounds might have looked at the job Furia Motorsports has done with the Lakeport Indoor Kart and Flat Track Bike oval and decided this was the way to go. Depending on how things go for me with the media effort this year, I'd like to continue to cover Ukiah and Lakeport this year on the blog or at least Ukiah.

I cover Keller Auto Speedway in this blog post, so I don't want to get too into racing details here. 56 King of Thunder Sprint Cars was damn impressive, and they pulled a few cars from Marysville, where 16 Sprint Cars were present. One thing I will say about Marysville is I'm pleased to see they've had 11 and 10 Crate Sprints so far, though I'm not going to declare momentum for that class based on two shows. It is a good start. It's obvious that the Hobby Stocks are enthusiastically supported with 27 cars showing up for the Marysville opener. It wasn't too many years ago when that class was on life support, so to see the numbers coming back as strong as they have in the last couple of years is very impressive indeed.

I was pleased to see they had 20 cars in both the West Coast Sport Compact and Tri State Pro Stock Series at Hanford. I have to get used to the name change that Dan Myrick put on the Sport Compact class as I've written an awful lot about the Central Valley Mini Stocks. I felt like they had a good CVMS brand going there, but I do understand the vibe that they are shooting for with this name change. It really is about providing some of the best Mini Stock racing you're going to find on the West Coast anywhere on the dirt and building up universal rules. They went 20 laps without a yellow flag and provided some good racing Saturday night.

Roy Bain certainly has the pressure of keeping the numbers up, so he had to make a decision with the Pro Stocks to not overbook. I'm not privy to this information as it's been a while since I've really interacted with Roy, but I'm thinking he turned down some dates this year in order to make sure he had good support at the dates that were booked. Going down to Hanford was a good idea as it gave the Bakersfield guys that tow up north a place closer to home. Speaking of Bakersfield, Scott Schweitzer did a really cool thing on Saturday night, even though it might have negatively impacted the show he put on the track in Bakersfield.

Let me just say that one of the reasons I think Scott would be open to working with Kern Raceway is the fact that he did the same for Rocky Hill Speedway in Porterville the last year that track opened. Scott and Roy had a phone call in which he graciously pulled the Pro Stocks from Saturday's show so the guys could go to Hanford. In return, the Tri State Series has been invited to the Bud Nationals in October. How cool is that? Racers like going to that big event in Bakersfield, and I could see the Pro Stock count pushing into the 30s if the Tri State Series is a part of it. As for Hanford, it was a good race with multiple lead changes once again.

I'll restate the obvious. One of the things I like about the Pro Stocks is they carry on a Late Model style of racing. Late Models have almost completely disappeared in California. You do have Limited Late Models at Marysville and Placerville and four Late Model dates at Stockton. These cars resemble Late Models and can actually produce fields in the 20s. Not everybody is enamored with Modified racing. That's not a shot at the class, which is very popular. People just have differing tastes, and some people want to see a Late Model style. Therefore, it's in the best interest of the class to build up and get a car count that makes it worthy of people's attention. Roy has been doing that, and I give him credit for all his hard work.

Roy would also point out that it's a team effort with other good people involved. That's the thing about a traveling association is you get people feeling like they are part of something special. To further harbor that sort of attitude, Roy has stepped up his game on Facebook with not just live updates from the track, but his shows during the week where he interviews various racers. We are at a time right now where social media plays such a big part in promoting the sport and getting people excited. Roy figured that out early on, but he also figured out in the last year that he needed better equipment to do it properly. Again, I salute him.

I have a bad feeling about the future of the Super Stock division at Antioch Speedway. Other than the Tri State visits that occurred last year, the numbers were dismal. It's not looking any better so far as only two cars showed up for the opener last week. They also allowed two IMCA Stock Cars to run with the field. I know there are enough cars out there to reach double digits, but if the drivers don't get their cars together and get out there, you'll see the Super Stocks ending soon at Antioch. I don't really want to see that happen, but I do think the situation with this division was a factor in Promoter Chad Chadwick making the decision to add IMCA Stock Cars to the lineup.

Probably in part due to the fact that Chadwick knew his Super Stock turnout wasn't going to be good, he made the decision leading up to that race to add the IMCA Sport Modifieds at the last minute. This decision produced a 16 car field, which matched what the Wingless Spec Sprints had. With 20 Dwarf Cars and 26 Hobby Stocks on hand, it was a nice season opener for the track. As I mentioned above, I just wish I had more details to go on as it's frustrating how much I have to struggle to get detailed information on Antioch. As they are now using the MyLaps system, I do hope they will decide to upload that stuff to the Speed Hive site.

It's time to go back into IMCA mode again at Antioch this week with the Modifieds, Sport Modifieds and Stock Cars all in action along with the Delta Dwarf Cars. I'm not sure what the Stock Car turnout will be, although I don't anticipate more than a half-dozen or so. The other three classes should be solid. They have tickets on sale online for April 3rd, but they are going fast. Otherwise, they will use antiochspeedway.tv for online broadcasting purposes.

Placerville Speedway has a limited amount of fans welcome this Saturday night for the regular show. Hopefully, these races will happen as rain is in the forecast on Thursday. It doesn't look very good for the second attempt to get the season kicked off at Ocean Speedway. As I'm writing this, no decision has been made, but it won't surprise me if it doesn't happen. I will be at the news desk watching whatever I select, and we'll see what we decide to do with that information.

I just noticed that Bay Area racing historian and photographer Dennis Mattish has announced he intends to be at Watsonville this Friday. It is significant in that he will be setting up a table and offering his Baylands Raceway history book there for the first time. I haven't seen it yet, but I have no doubt it's going to be a winner. I count his Watsonville book as one of my treasured possessions. I actually nearly got the San Jose book for a fantastic deal on eBay last week, but a laptop malfunction prevented what I think would have won me the book at an obscenely low price. By the way, Dennis isn't through with these books. He's working on an Altamont book at the moment.

This kind of fires me up a little bit. I know that I need to get to work on the books I have in mind. I struggle with the motivation and the drive to really get my ass in gear. The information is there for multiple books that I don't think will ever get done properly unless I get my ass in gear and do them. I'm actually leaning towards the nostalgia movement with some online stuff, although I haven't pulled the trigger on anything yet. The Hardtop and Sportsman divisions figure prominently in what I would like to do. I don't see anything being done to my liking at the moment, but I also wonder if I can do it up to my own standards. The debate continues.

The California Hardtop Association put out a rather nice schedule that will see them at multiple venues. Antioch enthusiasts can take note of the five dates there, including the Chet Thomson Memorial race in October. The Placerville dates are there as well, and I think it would be rather cool if they had a Dennis Armstrong Memorial race there. The Armstrong family was certainly a factor in why the Hardtops got dates there. Marysville, Chico and Petaluma are also in on the deal, and they kick it off at Marysville on April 17th. I may actually do a season preview article for these guys as I really do enjoy what they do.

Did I mention Orland Raceway is on the Hardtop schedule as well? Here is a cool thing to note. It looks like they are the only visiting group at the moment that Rich Hood has included on the schedule. He's sticking with the local offerings, including the Wingless Spec Sprints, Hobby Stocks, Mini Stocks, Mini Trucks and the Micro Sprint classes. There aren't even any special traditional races announced as of yet, but I think this has to do with the fact that they're not certain how the county will let them proceed in regards to having fans. I do know Hood will put some races on the track, as he did last year. I've been told they have a MyLaps scoring unit there, and if they put that information out in a place at which I can access it, Orland will be included in my media efforts for sure.

I'm pretty sure I wrote more than I really wanted to, but it is what it is. At this point, I'm going to end this column. Until next time...
