Sanders, Burke, Prickett, Gallaher Open
Ocean Speedway Season With Wins

Watsonville, CA...March 26...Justin Sanders won the 35 lap Taco Bravo Sprint Car Main Event Friday night at Ocean Speedway. This was the 62nd season opener for the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds race track, and 2015 champion Sanders left little doubt who the winner would be with a dominant performance on the Tom Sagmiller prepared quarter-mile clay oval.

Sanders set the fast time and won the six lap Trophy Dash ahead of Tanner Carrick to secure the pole position for the Main Event. When the green flag waved, he bolted into the lead ahead of Carrick and Justyn Cox. The lead trio remained the same through yellow flags on the third and fourth lap. Sanders was leading Carrick and Cox when the yellow flag waved on Lap 17. By then, B Main winner Colby Copeland had settled into fourth, and he briefly took third from Cox on the restart as Sanders continued to lead the persistent Carrick. Cox moved back around Copeland for third on Lap 19. Though Tanner Carrick kept it close, Sanders wrapped up his flag to flag run with the victory. Cox settled for third ahead of Copeland, James Ringo, Joel Myers Jr, Koen Shaw, Trent Canales, Kurt Nelson and Mark Chaves Jr.

Even with a bigger money event happening further down south, there were still 27 Taco Bravo Sprint Cars for the show, and Sanders set the fast time of 11.536, beating the 11.618 of Tanner Carrick. The three eight lap heat race wins went to Sanders, Kurt Nelson and Jodie Robinson. Copeland had a bad heat race, but he rode his front row start to a 12 lap B Main win ahead of James Ringo, Brett Barney, Jerry Bonnema and Jack Clark.

Reigning champion Cody Burke won the 20 Lap IMCA Modified Main Event. Burke found himself drawing a front row starting spot next to his brother Austin. Cody led Austin through three yellow flags in the first three laps. The Lap 4 restart found Cody Burke leading Austin Burke and Bobby Hogge IV. They only ran four laps before another yellow flag waved. As Cody Burke continued to lead Austin Burke and Hogge on the restart, past Antioch champion Carl Berendsen II began pressuring JC Elrod for fourth. Berendsen made the pass on the 10th lap. The second half of the race went caution free, and Cody Burke pulled away just a little bit on brother Austin Burke for the well-earned victory. Hogge settled for third, followed by Berendsen, Elrod, Jim Pettit II, Anthony Copeland, Freddie Plourde III, Robert Marsh and Rick Diaz. The 16 car field ran two eight lap heat races with the wins going to Hogge and Berendsen.

David Prickett won the 16 lap Master Design and Construction Western Midget Racing Main Event. Prickett won two of the three races for the class held last season at Watsonville and was the champion at the track in 2019. Outside front row starter David Taft set the early pace ahead of Cameron Beard and Prickett. Beard found himself leading Prickett on the fourth lap as a yellow flag flew for Taft. Both Tyler Slay and Shawn Arriaga retired from the race at that point. Blake Bower lead Prickett around Beard on the restart. A lap later, Pickett slipped past Bower to gain the lead as Antonia Boscacci settled into third. The yellow flag flew for recent Arizona winner Darren Brent on Lap 7. Prickett continued to lead Bower and Boscacci on the restart. The final yellow flag waved on the 11th lap for Boscacci, ending her race. Prickett led Bower and Taft on the restart. Bower was giving Prickett plenty of pressure in the waning laps, but Prickett would prevail at the checkered flag. Taft finished third, followed by Beard, Megan Morehead, Steve Durant, Jon Santibanes, Boscacci, Brent and Arriaga. Eight lap heat race wins went to Slay and Boscacci.

Reigning champion Joe Gallaher won the 20 lap Hobby Stock Main Event. Jerry Skelton shared the front row with reigning IMCA Sport Modified champion Adriane Frost and set the early pace. Terry Campion settled into third and took second from Frost on the fourth lap. On Lap 7, Joe Gallaher gained third before Campion brought out a yellow flag. Skelton continued to lead Joe Gallaher and Frost on the restart, but Gallaher was providing plenty of pressure. On the 10th lap, Joe Gallaher motored past Skelton to grab the lead. Skelton's run in second ended for a lap 15 yellow flag. Joe Gallaher led this restart and a final restart on Lap 19 to score the victory. Frost ended up second, followed by Norm Ayers, Ken Winland, Quentin Harris, Bobby Gallaher, Brady Muller, Scott Freeman, Tony Oliveira and Skelton. The eight lap heat race wins went to Campion and Norm Ayers.

Two-time champion Kate Beardsley won the 15 lap Four Banger Main Event. From his pole position start, Roy Iler jumped into the early lead ahead of Ryan McClelland and Kate Beardsley. Iler and McClelland had pulled away from the pack a little bit, and McClelland grabbed the lead on the sixth lap as Iler saw his race come to an end. On the ninth lap, misfortune struck McClelland, putting Kate Beardsley into the lead. Beardsley led the rest of the way to win ahead of Tony Gullo, Travis Van Gilder, Nicole Beardsley, Forest Movrich, Eddie Gallaher, Joseph Marsh, Bill Beardsley, McClelland and Iler. The six lap heat race win went to Iler.

Racing resumes next Friday night with the Taco Bravo Sprint Cars, IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sport Modifieds and Hobby Stocks. For further information, go to www.racepmg.com.

Adams Grabs Second USAC/CRA Sprint Car Win In
Tulare Thunderbowl Event

Tulare, CA...March 26...Max Adams won the 30 lap AMSOIL USAC/CRA Sprint Car Main Event Friday night at Tulare Thunderbowl. This was the second win of the season for the 2020 Gas City Speedway champion, and he was piloting Keith Ford's Cam 2 Blue Blood Racing Oil/Sun Valley Ag Transport Triple X. The win was also worth $3,000 to Adams as he is off to a great start this year.

Chris Gansen had the pole position and led the 20 car field to the green flag. Gansen led just a lap before being passed by Matt Mitchell. Brody Roa settled into second on Lap 3 with Adams gaining third a lap later. The lead trio were engaged in a good battle with Adams slipping past Roa for second on Lap 9. On the 11th lap, Adams took the lead from Mitchell, and a yellow flag waved moments later. Adams continued to lead Mitchell and Roa on the restart with Roa grabbing second on Lap 13. Another yellow flag waved moments later. Adams and Roa re-engaged in their battle from Kern Raceway at the previous Saturday event as they pulled away from the pack a little bit. Austin Liggett moved into third on Lap 15, and the yellow flag waved on Lap 21. Roa was pressuring Adams hard for the lead on the restart and briefly slipped past him on the 23rd lap. However, Adams came roaring back into the lead a lap later. The red flag flew for an AJ Bender flip on Lap 25. The final five laps went caution free, and Adams bolted ahead as the green flag waved. Damion Gardner was running in fourth at that point and took third from Liggett on Lap 28. On the final lap, Gardner found his line and managed to race by Roa for second. At the checkered flag, it was Adams winning ahead of Gardner, Liggett, Mitchell, Cody Williams, Tommy Malcolm, Austin Williams, Austin Grabowski, Gansen and Austin Ervine.

21 competitors timed in during Woodland Auto Display qualifying, and Gardner set the fast time standard of 15.453. Adams was second quick at 15.528. The Factory Wraps 10 lap heat races were won by Mitchell, Danny Faria Jr and Cody Williams.

Dominic Scelzi won the 30 lap King of Thunder Winged 360 Sprint Car Main Event. The special Dalton's Down Under Tour event paid Scelzi $2,000. Scelzi made it into the all-important six lap Trophy Dash, but Chase Majdic surprised him by winning the race. Scelzi's second place finish still gave him an outside front row starting spot for the feature race as Mitchell Faccinto finished third. When the green flag waved in the Main Event, Scelzi charged into the lead ahead of Majdic and Faccinto.  The red flag stopped the pace on Lap 3 as the race ended for Bud Kaeding and Rico Abreu. Scelzi continued to lead Majdic and Faccinto on this restart and Lap 7 and 8 restarts. Reigning King of Thunder champion DJ Netto was fourth on the eighth lap and took third from Faccinto on Lap 10. Following a Lap 15 yellow flag for Majdic, Netto settled into second ahead of Faccinto as Scelzi continued to lead the way. The final half of the race went interruption free, and Dominic Scelzi drove a flawless race to win. Netto was a $1,000 second, followed by Faccinto, Corey Day, Oregon star Tanner Holmes, Zane Blanchard, Keith Day, Kaleb Montgomery, Jake Andreotti and Max Mittry.

There were 27 King of Thunder Sprint Car competitors for the race that had an increased purse. Montgomery set the fast time of 13.709, beating the 13.765 of Holmes. The eight lap heat race wins went to Majdic, Netto and Faccinto. Bud Kaeding had a front row start for the 12 lap B Main and led Stephen Kent all the way for the victory. Rico Abreu, Keith Day and Tucker Worth completed the Top 5.

Brooklyn Holland won the 20 lap IMCA Van De Pol Western RaceSaver 305 Sprint Car Main Event. This was her second win of the season as she scored the victory in Hanford in February. Looking for his second win, Ryan DeLisle set the early pace ahead of Kyle Rasmussen. The yellow flag waved after just one lap, and the race ended for Blaine Fagundes. DeLisle continued to lead Rasmussen on the restart as Holland was now third. She moved by Rasmussen for second on Lap 3 and set her sights on DeLisle. DeLisle was setting a good pace at the front of the pack, but the persistent Holland finally found her opening on the 19th lap and motored by for the lead. Holland went on to victory with DeLisle settling for second ahead of Rasmussen, Ryan Rocha, Lane Taylor, Brandon Stidham, Kevin Barnes Sr, Connor Danell, Phil Heynen and Richard Weddle. Holland was the quickest of 14 qualifiers with a lap of 14.705, beating the 14.894 of Rocha. The eight lap heat race wins went to Holland and DeLisle, making it a clean sweep for Holland.

Siskiyou Golden Speedway Unveils
Modest 2021 Schedule

Yreka, CA...On Friday morning, Promoter Kevin Barba again released the 2021 schedule for Siskiyou Golden Speedway. Barba is in the third year of his three-year deal as promoter of the venue, and he, like every other promoter in the country, was severely impacted by the covid-19 pandemic shutdown of 2020. Despite that, he made several races happen and will be crowning his 2020 champions on May 1st at a pot luck banquet in the pits. The season opener is on April 3rd, weather permitting. The IMCA Sport Modifieds, Mini Stocks and Jefferson State Jalopies will share the bill that night.

For the past few seasons, the two divisions that have done the heavy lifting, so to speak, are the IMCA Sport Modifieds and Mini Stocks. This will again be the case this year as the Sport Modifieds compete on 16 occasions, while Mini Stocks will be there 15 times. This will include three two-race weekends that will include both divisions. When fans are allowed in attendance once again, they will get nine visits from the Southern Oregon Dwarf Cars, eight from the Outlaw Pro Stocks, five from the Jefferson State Jalopies and four from the Limited Sprints. The schedule is subject to change based on covid-19 guidelines and things that come up during the year that may require adjustments.

Fans will notice the absence of the IMCA Modifieds from the current schedule. This marks the first time the speedway will not crown a champion in this class since the division was started back in the early 1990s. Management cited low attendance numbers and a directive from the Siskiyou Golden Fair Board to not book this division as reasons for their absence. Last season, they ran them seven times. Though sometimes the numbers weren't spectacular, they still had more cars showing up last year than in previous seasons.

The Limited Sprints have been given appearances in each of Barba's two seasons as promoter. There has been an interest expressed by some of the Southern Oregon competitors in racing at Yreka. Coupled with the fact that the Winged Crate Sprint division continues to run in Northern California, the track decided to give these racers a bit more of an opportunity. They will compete on April 17th, June 26th and on Labor Day weekend, September 4th and 5th. This is an attempt to still give the fans a taste of something different than the regular fare, while trying to keep things within budget.

Dates have not been announced for the traditional John Arnberg Memorial, Rod Restart Memorial, Bo Hittson Memorial or the Mike Cavaye Jr Memorial, though they could be forthcoming. The track will welcome the Tri State Pro Stock Challenge Series for the annual Billy Geyer Memorial on May 29th and 30th, joined by the IMCA Sport Modifieds and Mini Stocks. On June 19th, the track will host the Rod Barba Memorial, paying tribute to Kevin's father, who was involved in the track's maintenance for several years. The Outlaw Pro Stocks will be there along with the IMCA Sport Modifieds, Mini Stocks and Jefferson State Jalopies.

On July 3rd and 4th, the track will host the IMCA Sport Modifieds, Mini Stocks and Jalopies on both nights with the Southern Oregon Dwarf Cars competing on the 3rd. On Labor Day weekend, September 4th and 5th, the Southern Oregon Dwarf Cars will be there along with the IMCA Sport Modifieds, Mini Stocks and aforementioned Limited Sprints. The track will be running just about every other week through the end of September for championship points. As fan attendance is allowed, you can anticipate special promotion announcements will be forthcoming.

As mentioned above, the track will have the season opener on April 3rd, featuring the IMCA Sport Modifieds, Mini Stocks and Jefferson State Jalopies. On April 17th, it will be Limited Sprints, Southern Oregon Dwarf Cars and IMCA Sport Modifieds. Fans are advised to go to www.sisykiyougoldenspeedway.com for announcements or keep an eye on the Siskiyou Golden Speedway Facebook page.

A Look Back At 2020

Barba struggled to get the gates open for the 2020 season. Eventually, he got the okay for limited attendance practice days. He devised a plan where they would practice in three different segments on whatever particular day to enable everybody who wanted to get out on the track the opportunity to do so. Finally, the track was approved for racing on June 13th. With Southern Oregon Speedway not running, this was an opportunity for the track to shine for the racers. There were some well supported races, and the track always tried to keep the fans included with streaming service, even if it was free on the Facebook page.

The high water mark came on July 3rd and 4th weekend when Travis Hoppes of Hoppes Construction offered big money to have Late Models at the track, while also giving increased purse money to the IMCA Modifieds on Friday and the IMCA Sport Modifieds on Saturday. What resulted was the track's biggest non-Speedweek oriented IMCA Modified race in years at 24 cars. Rookie Justin McCreadie pocketed the $1,500 after Jeffrey Hudson had issues and had to retire from the lead battle. Champion Travis Perry finished second ahead of Jon DeBenedetti. The IMCA Sport Modifieds also delivered a stellar field of 29 competitors with reigning Southern Oregon Speedway champion Jorddon Braaten picking up the $400 win ahead of new Yreka champion Mike Medel and Austin Petray. That was the good news.

The bad news was the track crew had issues that put them far behind the schedule that night. Rather than end things without the drivers having their Main Events, Barba rolled the dice and went well past curfew, knowing he might suffer the wrath of county officials. He was right on that assumption. He was required to pull both the Outlaw Pro Stocks and Southern Oregon Dwarf Cars from Saturday's show, resulting in far less of a driver turnout that night. Braaten might have thought he would win the Sport Modified race on this occasion, but he had to settle for third behind $850 winner Braxton Possinger and Ethan Killingsworth. The Late Model portion of the show delivered 12 cars, which is impressive when you consider they weren't drivers from a Late Model tour and Yreka doesn't have its own program. Reigning Medford champion Trent Elliott picked up the $2,000 win in a close race with Mark Wauge and Coos Bay Speedway champion Preston Luckman.

The track sort of had to go back to the drawing board at that point as they worked on a way forward. This resulted in a few less races than they had hoped, but they still opened for a total of 10 races after that, starting on July 18th. It may not have been the best situation, but at least the racers could get back out on the track and the fans could watch a free live stream on the track's Facebook page on most occasions.

For the IMCA Modifieds, they held a total of seven races with the lowest turnouts of seven and six cars still better than the regular show turnouts in the previous few seasons. Past champion Travis Peery returned to race and also helped with the track preparation. He was the only driver with seven Top 5 finishes, including two wins. With two wins of his own, past Yreka champion Albert Gill only trailed Peery by 11 points by season's end. Another past champion, Duane Orsburn, ranked third with four Top 5 finishes, followed by Jeremy Crebs and two-time winner Jeffrey Hudson. McCreadie was the only other winner, grabbing his victory at the aforementioned Hoppes Motorsports sponsored event.

In the IMCA Sport Modified ranks, they held a total of 12 races during the course of the point season. Reigning Medford champion Jorddon Braaten was head and shoulders above the competition with six wins out of his nine Top 5 finishes. However, Braaten voluntarily vacated the point lead so that he could participate in the Boone, Iowa Nationals. This put the point lead in the hands of past Medford champion Mike Medel as he sought to hold off a late surge by incoming Yreka champion Ethan Killingsworth. Medel had eight Top 5 finishes, which matched the total of Killingsworth, but Killingsworth had two wins. The result was a split championship. Medel beat Killingsworth by 13 points to win the IMCA sanctioned championship, while Killingsworth was listed as 25 points ahead of Medel for the track's separately kept point race.

Despite missing some races, Braaten still only trailed Killingsworth by 17 tallies in the end. Colt Boswell was listed 13 points ahead of rookie Ryan Peery for fourth in the IMCA sanctioned battle, while Peery was listed as 26 points ahead of Boswell in the Yreka track totals. Peery had an impressive season with five Top 5 finishes, including a pair of victories. As mentioned above, Possinger counted the big money win as one of his two triumphs at the speedway.

In the Mini Stock division, there was never much doubt that reigning Medford and past Yreka champion David Steele would reclaim his throne. Steele turned in a dominant performance with eight Top 5 finishes, including seven wins. He beat past track champion Marilyn Yawnick by 105 points. Yawnick had four Top 5 efforts compared to six for her teammate and fellow past Yreka champion Mike Whitaker. Whitaker beat Hunter Magnan by just seven points for the third position. Magnan had four Top 5 finishes. Due to his absence from one Main Event, Ashtin Hedges dropped back to the fifth spot in the standings. However, he was clearly the biggest challenger to Steele with six Top 5 finishes and one feature triumph.

The track welcomed the Outlaw Pro Stocks on six occasions throughout the championship season, and an amazing thing happened. There were no repeat winners among them. Unfortunately, the Billy Geyer Memorial had been canceled due to the pandemic situation and never got rescheduled. Association champion Scott Flowers also won the track title, but he only beat Matt Harlow by two tallies. Harlow recorded his first career win during the season out of his five Top 5 efforts. Flowers matched the totals of Harlow with five Top 5s and one win. Colby Hammond nearly got the win in the season opener and was in contention throughout the year. He had one Top 5 finish to finish 10 points out of the lead in third and one ahead of Johnny Cobb. Cobb had one win out of two Top 5 efforts as did rookie Darek Alford, who settled for fifth in the standings. Jeff Haudenshild was the other feature winner.

The Bernstein/Smith team again fielded their four Jefferson State Jalopies on four occasions. It was JJ Smith picking up three wins to beat incoming champion Marilyn Yawnick by just four tallies. Karl Bernstein ended up third in the standings ahead of Ron Morris and Josh Bernstein. Rick Webber took the wheel of the fourth Jalopy and picked up the win in the final race of the point season.

The Southern Oregon Dwarf Cars did manage to get a pair of visits in the books. On August 29th, multi time champion Josh King bested a 15 car field to win ahead of Kalvin Morton and Brock Peters. On September 19th, Camden Robustelli got the win ahead of Chad Cardoza and Jason Robustelli. Camden Robustelli also got an opportunity to drive the TJ Wnningham Limited Sprint at the Track N Treat finale on October 31st. He made the most of it by scoring the win that night ahead of Cottage Grove star Tyler Thompson and Pat Desbians. They also had a race earlier in the year, won by Desbiens.

With the championship season wrapped up, they did have three events in October. The first one saw Killingsworth winning the IMCA Sport Modified race ahead of Possinger and Tyler Rodgers. Kassidy Wilkinson got the win in the Mini Stocks, which ran with the Jalopies as both fields were down cars. Karl Bernstein was the top Jalopy finisher on that occasion. On October 17th, Braaten came back to win the IMCA Sport Modified race ahead of Ryan Peery and Rodgers. Past Outlaw Pro Stock champion Steve Borror won that division's Main Event ahead of Flowers and Alford.

The final IMCA Sport Modified race of the year went to Matt Sanders ahead of Peery and Keith Foux. Borror again won the Outlaw Pro Stock race ahead of Flowers and Hammond. The two October Pro Stock races counted just for the association's points and not the track points. As mentioned above, Robustelli won the Sprint Car portion of the program ahead of Thompson and Desbiens

Barba and his crew are hoping for better things in 2021 as the state loosens up and allows fans back into the grandstands. It all kicks off on April 3rd with the IMCA Sport Modifieds, Mini Stocks and Jefferson State Jalopies, and it goes on from there. For further information, go to www.siskiyougoldenspeedway.com or the track's Facebook page.

The Editor's Hot Takes

This is just my attempt to offer some observations without writing too much.

Karl Bernstein and JJ Smith have just about completed construction of their fifth Jefferson State Jalopy. This one will feature a pink paint job for the ladies, and it should debut soon. Thus far, Smith and Bernstein are the only ones to build cars for this new class that is unique to Siskiyou Golden Speedway, but hopefully new car builders will emerge. I'm not against the idea of this division, but I think they should seriously consider getting a Hobby Stock class going there, a Hornet division or both.

One interesting possibility for Yreka would be to work out a Limited Sprint series with Medford. With new management at Medford and potentially less dates than some racers might hope for the division, this would be a way to make up the difference.

Cottage Grove Speedway has added some Senior Sprint dates (May 30, June 18, July 31). The drivers would use Limited Sprint Cars and is a way to give the older drivers an opportunity for some track time without having to run with the new drivers. Ventura Raceway has done a similar thing for years, so why not? It's an opportunity for the track to get more pit pass money at least. For information on race dates for this class and how to order grandstand tickets for next Saturday's season opener, go to www.cottagegrovespeedway.com.

Josh Smith has cut an Outlaw Kart track on the infield at Mountain Valley Raceway in Hayfork. At one time, they did have a Kart track at the facility. Smith has been a big advocate of making this happen to bring young drivers into racing. Personally, I think it's a great idea. Hayfork needs to do what they can to get new drivers as they are a little off the beaten past in Northwestern California.

As race tracks all start getting back in business again, you will see more competition to get the cars. Friday night was a perfect example. There were two Winged 360 Sprint Car shows going on. Watsonville had 27 cars, while Tulare Thunderbowl had 28. In fact, Tulare had over 60 Sprint Cars in the pits under three different divisions.

The Western Midget Racing event at Watsonville had 12 cars, which is their biggest turnout in it's young history. You can plainly see the car count is growing.

A few more details have come to light regarding the recent bidding for Southern Oregon Speedway, and I'm not going to get into much here. However, untruths and outright lies were presented as facts pertaining to the previous management that I find problematic.

Bottom line is Mike McCann came in following a steady car count and attendance decline over the previous five or six years and stopped that decline. This is a documentable fact.

There was an upturn in numbers in the pits and the grandstands, Sprint Car and Late Model divisions were established and key racing events were also established. I wish the people who want the track would focus on the future and get over their unhappiness that they didn't get everything they wanted under the the previous management.

Bottom line is I support Southern Oregon Speedway opening as soon as possible. They have a good racing community there and deserve a good race track. I do not endorse or support the group that was initially awarded the track. As I've learned more, the whole process seems suspicious to me, and I'll leave it at that.

In saying that, if they ultimately get the keys to the gates, I wish them luck and success. No bitterness here, but I will correct any lies and misinformation being spread about the past.

Furthermore, there may be an opportunity for people to improve the racing situation in that area. Siskiyou Golden Speedway will come up for bid at the end of this year, and there's plenty of potential to do good things there if the right person comes along. At that point, potential is there to work something out for a series between the two venues.
