Delta Valley Classic Coming To
Antioch and Merced September 26th-27th
When Oval Motorsports took the reigns at Merced Speedway back in 2010, one of the things promoter John M. Soares wanted to do was strengthen the ties between the two tracks. Soares had long established his willingness go pay big purses for special shows, but he took it up a notch with a special weekend show between the two tracks.
This happened in a big way back in late August of 2010 with the first Delta Valley Classic. This came at a time before the IMCA Sport Modified division really broke through, while it was possible to have a big IMCA Modified show and attract a car count in the 50's. Oval Motorsports paid big money for that weekend and a bonus if a driver could win both nights.
Of course, there was a driver who had long since established his ability to win the big money at races up and down the West Coast. Not surprisingly, that driver bagged the big bucks for the weekend and went home with an $8,000 paycheck. That would be Bobby Hogge IV, of course.
This will be the Sixth Delta Valley Classic, and the same four divisions that competed last season at both tracks will do so again this year. That means IMCA Modifieds and Sport Modifieds will headline the show, while Northern All Stars Hobby Stocks and Limited Late Models will also compete. The dates are Saturday, September 26th for Antioch and Sunday, September 27th for Merced.
For this year, Soares has offered up $2000 to win and a minimum $200 to start each IMCA Modified feature. The entry will be $100 for car and driver. The IMCA Sport Mods compete for $500 to win and $100 minimum to start. Entry is $75 for car and driver. There is also a $500 bonus to any driver who can win both Main Events for either division that weekend.
It's an opportunity to close the 2015 season on a high note at both tracks and kick off the "Open Comp" season as some of the best drivers from other tracks make visits to the two Oval Motorsports speedways to see who can take the money. Commitments have not be made yet, but immediately, names like two time NASCAR Regional champion Bobby Hogge IV, four time Antioch champion Troy Foulger and Past Merced and Hanford champion Paul Stone come to mind as drivers to watch for. One can't help but wonder if past Antioch champion Kellen Chadwick might be back in action, or if we could see such Modified stars as Bakersfield's Robby Sawyer, Darrell Hughes II, Petaluma point leader Nick DeCarlo, six time Petaluma champion Michael Paul Jr. or even the Burke brothers (Austin and Cody).
At Antioch top stars like point leader Scott Busby, past Street Stock champion Bobby Motts Jr., 2014 Antioch champion Carl Berendsen II and Shawn DeForest are likely to be seen. There's also two time winner and 2004 champion Aaron Crowell, and rising stars Nick Viscusi III and Josh Combs. At Merced, top stars like point leader Alex Wilson, 2014 State champion Kyle Wilson, three time Street Stock champion Ricky Thatcher and four time champion Ramie Stone will be anticipated. Others to watch out for include three time winner Ryan Porter, Harley Turner, Derek Nance and two time champion Bob Williamson.
The increased purse has a way of bringing out the big name drivers in Sport Mods as 2014 Merced champion Rick Diaz, past Antioch champion Jeremy Hoff, 2014 State champion Nick Spainhoward, Watsonville point leader Matt Hagio and Anthony Giuliani are among those we could see. Of course, State champion Fred Ryland and Keith Brown Jr. are likely to be seen at both tracks, while Antioch will likely see such hard chargers as Patti Ryland, Al Johnson, Paul Mulder, Chuck Golden and Trevor Clymens, Merced can expect local hard chargers like point leader Josh Hensley, past Sportsman champion Mark Odgers, Dwayne Short, past Chowchilla Street Stock champion Gary Tucker, Nick Tucker and three time Street Stock champion Darren Thomas to be in action.
It really comes down to one last chance to write your name onto the winner's list for the 2015 season, which seems to have come and gone in a flash. Last year, the Antioch leg of the Delta Valley Classic saw Bobby Hogge IV, fresh off of his Northern All Stars Modified championship, win the Modified Main Event ahead of past Hanford and Watsonville champion Brian Cass, Shawn DeForest, Mike Salazar and Michael Paul Jr. The Sport Mod money went to 2014 Chowchilla champion Spainhoward ahead of Diaz, Al Johnson, Tim Elias and 2014 Antioch champion Rob Gallaher.
A 16 car Limited Late Model field seemed to give hope for the future as Mike Learn won ahead of two time champion Mike Gustafson and 2014 champion Larry Damitz. Past champion Brad Myers won the Hobby Stock race ahead of 2014 champion Kimo Oreta and Christopher Brown. It was a well rounded show, and all indications are that the 2015 Delta Valley Classic will be just as good, if not better.
Hogge wasn't through winning, however. He loaded up and went to Merced, where he beat Chett Reeves, Cody Burke, Mitch Enos and 2014 Merced champion Paul Stone. Ethan Dotson came in from Bakersfield and won the Sport Mod money ahead of Spainhoward, Darren Thomas, Jordan Hagar and a nice double Top 5 weekend for Elias. Myers made it a two win weekend by beating Kevin Joaquin and Nick Baldwin in the Hobby Stock race. Mark Garner gave a preview of things to come by winning the Limited Late Model race ahead of Buddy Thatcher and John M. Soares. Soares even won a heat race that night.
This is also an effort by Oval Motorsports to end the 2015 season with some momentum to carry into what will hopefully be an even better 2016 season. In recent weeks, Antioch had their seven division "kitchen sink" event with some 90 cars in the pits and one of the biggest attendances of the year., The Outlaws make their final appearance on September 13th and then there is a big six division show after that.
Merced Speedway honored past legends and had one of its best car counts of the year. A week later, the Hobby Stocks produced a point season high car count. Good things are on the horizon, and this event is not just a chance for drivers to win the last race of the season, but to win a little more money and bragging rights as well, Then comes the off season, but Oval Motorsports is already planning a big opener once again for 2016.
Currently pencilled in for 2016 is the West Coast Nationals event that will be another big money race for IMCA Modifieds and Sport Modifieds. Last year, Antioch and Merced paid $2500 to win the Modified race and $1750 for Sport Modifieds. On January 1st, Antioch runs the two divisions along with Limited Late Models. A night later, the two divisions are joined by the always exciting Hobby Stocks at Merced.
Oval Motorsports remains committed to putting on big races during the season and building a stronger weekly racing program at all of its race tracks. The Delta Valley Classic on September 26th and 27th is just the latest example. Who will be the big winners this season? Stay tuned.
